Abstract:Hollow Gaussian beams (HGBs) with annular intensity distributions but uniform phase and polarization distributions have aroused enormous interest due to their advantages in optical trapping, optical limiting, etc. Although extensive HGB generation methods have been performed previously, there are still existing limitations in polarization independence and broadband response, which hinder the application of HGBs. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate an HGB generation method by restoring structured light with a pair of cascaded dielectric metasurface q-plates. The metasurface q-plates are based on Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) phase and work as elements of optical spin-to-orbital angular momentum conversion. The first metasurface q-plate is used to introduce orbital angular momentum to an incident circularly polarized beam, and the output light field possesses both annular intensity distribution and spiral phase with reversed circular polarization. Since the phase retardation of the metasurface q-plates is pi, the reversed circularly polarized beam output from the first metasurface q-plate will obtain opposite spiral phase after the second metasurface q-plate. Then, the spiral phase of the output light field is counteracted, but its annular intensity distribution is retained as a new HGB. Arbitrarily polarized Gaussian beams are available for incident beams because they can be decomposed into orthogonal circularly polarized components. Furthermore, this method is applicable to a broad spectrum of visible light owing to the dispersion-free characteristic of the PB phase. This work suggests a polarization-independent and broadband HGB generation method, which may benefit HGB-based fundamental research.

Abstract:Dark hollow beams (DHBs) have great potential in the applications of optical manipulation, and the generation of DHBs is still a challenging and rewarding issue. In this paper, we present a beam shaping system for generating DHBs. The proposed system is composed of a freeform lens array and a non-classical room system which has a constant focal length but various image locations. The DHBs with a well-controlled intensity profile generated by the proposed system is not sensitive to the change of the intensity distribution of the incident beam, which allows flexible choices of light sources. Moreover, the annular pattern produced by the DHB remains unchanged when the image plane is moved a long distance of 17mm, and the energy efficiency of the beam shaping system is greater than 90% when Fresnel loss is considered. The proposed beam shaping system endows the generated DHBs with new properties and may have great potential in the field of optical tweezers and atom guides. Abstract:Cylindrical vector beam is one of the polarized beams whose states of polarization are spatially various and cylindrical symmetric. Owing to their peculiar focusing property, cylindrical vector beam has attracted more and more attentions. In this paper, we propose a method to generate cylindrical vector beam with rotatable polarization in free space. Two spatially homogeneous polarized beams are modified properly into spatially varied polarized beam by the vortex phase plate respectively. Then two phase-coded beams are combined together to generate a cylindrical vector beam. In addition, the polarization directions of cylindrical beams can be rotated continuously to a desired direction. The polarization states of the cylindrical vector beam are calculated by Johns matrix. The focusing properties are simulated by MATLAB.

Abstract:White-light non-diffraction beams such as Airy beam and Bessel beam have potential applications in multispectral imaging and micromanipulation. Generation of white-light Airy beam and Bessel beam with high quality and high efficiency still remains challenging for conventional diffractive or refractive optics which suffers from significant chromatic dispersion. In this paper, both high-quality white-light Airy beam and Bessel beam are generated using a deformable mirror by modulating the incident LED beam with tunable cubic and conical wavefronts. The main lobe of the generated white-light non-diffraction beams does not suffer from chromatic dispersion along the propagation. The results also show that the generation of the white-light Bessel beam has higher requirements for spatial coherence than white-light Airy beams. Our work expands the understanding of the white-light non-diffraction beams and paves the way for the applications.

Abstract:Previous methods for the generation of accelerating beams are mostly based on bulky phase-only spatial light modulator. Here we propose an experimental scheme for the generation of accelerating beams by fabricating a quartz plate capable of realizing both phase and amplitude modulation. The phase modulation is implemented by aligned 16-level etching into the quartz plate, while the amplitude modulation is realized by controlling the duty ratio of the partial metal coverage locally. Based on this approach, a sinusoidal accelerating beam with multiple bending is generated for demonstration and propagates along a sinusoidal trajectory as expected.

Abstract:Recently, accelerating beam is becoming a hotspot in optics research. In this paper, we studied the evolving phases of accelerating generalized polygon beams (AGPBs) and proposed a novel method to generate this beam family. An important discovery has been made about reconstructing AGPBs only by evolving low-frequency phases in high power region, which confirms the dominant role of phase terms in the AGPBs' evolution. We also succeeded controlling the size and quantity of AGPB's intensity peaks in an easy and direct manner by manipulating the evolving phases in low frequency. This result not only explains the self-healing property of AGPBs but also confirms that AGPBs can be a great candidate to function as an optical tweezer to trap and free microparticles and microcreatures for certain purpose. Abstract:We present a design of the diffractive phase elements (DPE's) that produce nondiffracting beams according to the beam-shaping scheme, in which the incident Gaussian-profile beam is converted into a Bessel-function J(0) beam. An optimization method is applied to solving this special beam-shaping problem. Numerical investigation of the generating J(0) Bessel beam shows that the designed DPE can satisfactorily produce the J(0) Bessel beam. (C) 1998 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:Non-diffracting beams, notable for their self-healing properties, high-localized intensity profiles over extended propagation distances, and resistance to diffraction, present significant utility across various fields. In this letter, we present a versatile and highly efficient non-diffracting beams (NDBs) generator predicated on the Fourier transformation of the focal plane field produced through the free lens modulation. We demonstrate the experimental generation of high-quality Bessel beams, polymorphic generalized NDBs, tilted NDBs, asymmetric NDBs, NDBs array and specially structured beams formed by the superposition of co-propagating beams. The versatile generalized NDBs generator is anticipated to find applications in laser processing, optical manipulation, and other fields.

Abstract:Geometric phases have attracted considerable attention in recent years, due to their capability of arbitrary beam shaping in a most efficient and compact way, while traditional geometric phases are usually limited to handling single-structured beams and lack the capability of parallel manipulation. Here, we propose a digitalized geometric phase enabling parallel optical spin and orbital angular momentum encoding. The concept is demonstrated in inhomogeneous anisotropic media by imprinting a particularly designed binary phase into a space-variant geometric phase. We theoretically analyze its spin orbit interaction of light and experimentally created higher-order Poincare sphere beam lattices, the order number and symmetry of which can be flexibly manipulated. Special lattices of cylindrical vector beams and orbital angular momentum modes with square and hexagonal symmetry are presented. This work discloses a new insight in programming geometric phases for tailoring the optical field and inspires various photonics applications.

Abstract:In this paper, partially coherent radially polarized vortex circular Airy beams (PCRPVCABs) are theoretically and experimentally studied for the first time. Comparing with partially coherent radially polarized circular Airy beam, the autofocusing ability of PCRPVCAB can be controlled or even enhanced by the topological charge of the vortex phase. Besides, we show a unique distribution of the degree of polarization, vortex-phase induced polarization transition, and the phenomenon of beam spot rotation after the PCRPVCAB passing through a polarizer. Our results make the PCRPVCAB a good candidate for optical micro-manipulation, free-space communications, formation of disordered optical lattices, etc.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a new, to the best of our knowledge, kind of partially coherent vector beam called the partially coherent radially polarized circular Airy beam (PCRPCAB). The PCRPCAB inherits the autofocusing ability of the radially polarized circular Airy beam (RPCAB) and can create an optical potential well at the center of the beam, whose depth can be adjusted by changing the coherent width. We find that, as coherent width decreases, the intensity becomes higher in the dark notch caused by the polarization singularity, and the singularity of the degree of polarization (DOP) remains along propagation, with its waist controllable by the coherent width. Our results make the PCRPCAB a good candidate for optical micromanipulation, disordered optical lattices, etc. (C) 22020 Optical Society of America

In our constructed optical setup, the SLM is used to produce a computer-generated holographic grating that diffracts a linearly polarized incident light into the +1st and -1st diffraction orders with desired wavefronts. After the two diffraction beams pass through two quarter wave-plates, the left- and right-handed circularly polarizations are yielded, respectively. Then a Rochi grating is utilized to recombine the two beams into single one such that any desired polarization configuration is achieved. We demonstrate the versatility of our method through optical experiment, in which a variety of polarization beams are realized. By making use of the incident wave with helical phase, our technique can produce both cylindrically symmetric and asymmetric polarizations. To the best of our knowledge, the experimental realization of cylindrically asymmetric polarization is reported for first time. We also study the focal properties of vector beam through a high numerical aperture lens. Starting from Richards-Wolf vectorial diffraction theory we calculate the focal field distribution and obtain some interesting focal volume structures, such as flat-topped focus, doughnut focus with special dark volume structure.

Abstract:Abstract Self-accelerating polygon beams have drawn growing emphasis in optics owing to their exceptional characteristics of multiple self-accelerating channels and needle-like field distributions. Various approaches have been proposed to generate polygon beams, such as using spatial light modulators (SLMs) or plasmonic metasurfaces. However, SLMs impede the miniaturization of the optical system and both approaches are subject to low efficiencies and demand an extra physical lens with a long focal length for Fourier transform, which limits the quality and the diverse variability of polygon beams. In this article, we demonstrate the generation of high-quality accelerating polygon beams in broadband spectra of 500–850 nm by utilizing dielectric metasurfaces. These metasurfaces integrate the functionality of the Fourier transform lens to enable the resulting beams with a large curvature ratio for the self-accelerating channels and a relatively small size for the autofocus region. The curvature ratio of the beam at λ = 633 nm is 31 times higher than the previously reported plasmonic-based method. While the size of the focused spot is 2.35 μm, which is reduced by nearly 15 times. The proposed beam generator provides ample opportunities for applications such as particle micromanipulation, beam shaping, laser fabrication, and biomedical imaging.

Abstract:We propose a method based on a 4-f system that mainly consists of a spatial light modulator (SLM) and a Wollaston prism, to generate arbitrary vector beams with specifically designed amplitude, phase, and polarization. The incident beam is divided by a computer-generated hologram written on the SLM into two beams, each of which is encoded with a prescribed complex field and then are combined efficiently into a single beam by the Wollaston prism. Combining capability of the Wollaston prism can be tuned through the prism’s rotation. We achieve a conversion efficiency that is three-fold higher than that of using a Ronchi grating for the beam combination.

Abstract:As a continuous transition between the Hermite-Gaussian and Laguerre-Gaussian beams, the Ince-Gaussian beams form a family of exact orthogonal solutions of the free-space paraxial wave equation in elliptic coordinates. Ince-Gaussian beams have multiple transverse mode patterns, which make them unique in terms of application in the fields of bioengineering, particle manipulation, and quantum entanglement. Here, based on binary nonlinear computer-generated holograms with a domain structure (realized via electric field poling at room temperature), we generate a second-harmonic Ince-Gaussian beam pumped with a fundamental Gaussian beam. In this process, the transverse part of the phase-matching condition is satisfied, which is called the Raman–Nath-type nonlinear diffraction. Both frequency conversion and beam shaping can be realized simultaneously, thereby offering the advantage of integration of both functions into a single device.

Abstract:Nondiffracting light beams receive substantial attention in various areas due to their properties of diffractionless propagation and achievable subwavelength beam size. Extending the propagation distance and compressing the beam size of nondiffracting beams are crucial to their practical applications. However, it remains challenging to achieve nondiffracting light beams with a subwavelength subdiffracting transverse size and a long propagation distance with controllable intensity profiles in both transverse and longitudinal directions. Here, we propose an optimization method to generate an ultralong-superoscillation nondiffracting light beam with full control of the beam intensity profile. A 45 λ -long-superoscillation nondiffracting light beam, the transverse sizes of which are within the range of 0.37 λ –0.4 λ along the propagation axis, is experimentally demonstrated by a metalens based on continuous phase modulation using geometrical phase metasurfaces. Our method provides an attractive way to controllably generate ultralong-superoscillation nondiffracting beams on a subwavelength scale and might find fascinating applications in optical manipulation, materials processing, data storage, microscopy, and spectroscopy. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevApplied.19.014041 © 2023 American Physical Society
