Abstract:van der Waals (vdW) heterojunctions formed by two-dimensional (2D) materials have attracted tremendous attention due to their excellent electrical/optical properties and device applications. However, current 2D heterojunctions are largely limited to atomic crystals, and hybrid organic/inorganic structures are rarely explored. Here, we fabricate hybrid 2D heterostructures with p-type dioctylbenzothienobenzothiophene (C8-BTBT) and n-type MoS2. We find that few-layer C8-BTBT molecular crystals can be grown on monolayer MoS2 by vdW epitaxy, with pristine interface and controllable thickness down to monolayer. The operation of the C8-BTBT/MoS2 vertical heterojunction devices is highly tunable by bias and gate voltages between three different regimes: interfacial recombination, tunneling and blocking. The pn junction shows diode-like behavior with rectifying ratio up to 105 at the room temperature. Our devices also exhibit photovoltaic responses with power conversion efficiency of 0.31% and photoresponsivity of 22mA/W. With wide material combinations, such hybrid 2D structures will offer possibilities for opto-electronic devices that are not possible from individual constituents.

Abstract:The responses of MIL-122(Al, Ga, In) to pressure or temperature have been investigated. The findings suggest that the a-axis in the lattice exhibits minimal compressibility, particularly with zero linear compressibility (ZLC) behavior observed in MIL-122(In), consistent with experimental reports. Additionally, as the radius of metal atoms increases, the compressibility of the b-axis and c-axis gradually strengthens. There is a notable compositional dependence on volume thermal expansion in MIL-122(Al, Ga, In) where an increase in metal atom radius leads to gradually weakening volume thermal expansion. In particular, MIL-122(In) demonstrates pronounced volume negative thermal expansion (NTE) property, with the a-axis displaying the zero thermal expansion (ZTE) behavior, and both the b-axis and c-axis exhibiting NTE behavior. The temperature-dependent relative change in bulk modulus of MIL-122(Al, Ga, In) has also been explored, revealing abnormal thermal hardening specifically within MIL-122(Ga, In). We attribute these unique uniaxial ZTE and ZLC behaviors in MIL-122(In) to its distinctive wine-rack topology, anomalous phonons (negative Grüneisen parameters), and internal structural flexibility.

Uniaxial zero thermal expansion in low-cost Mn2OBO3 from 3.5 to 1250 K

Abstract:Unique zero thermal expansion (ZTE) materials are valuable for use in precision instruments, including electronics, aerospace parts, and engines. However, most ZTE materials have a temperature range less than 1000 K under which they do not expand. In this study, we present a uniaxial ZTE in the low-cost Mn2OBO3 with a thermal expansion coefficient of $\alpha$= -1.7$\times$10^(-7) K-1 along the [h00] direction from 3.5 to 1250 K. The monoclinic structure of Mn2OBO3 remains stable over the entire temperature range in ambient conditions. Considerable thermal contraction on the BO3 trigonal planar and thermal expansion on the MnO6 octahedra combine to produce uniaxial ZTE. No charge order-disorder transition, which could cause thermal contraction, was observed up to 1250 K.

Abstract:Negative thermal expansion (NTE) materials can compensate high thermal expansion of metal materials, showing great potential use in precision instruments and microelectronics field. We developed a near-zero thermal expansion ZrW2O8/Al–Si composites with three dimensional mutually interpenetrated structure. Pressure infiltration ensured dense structure and mild interface reaction. The resulting composite has ultra-low thermal expansion (1.09 × 10−6 K−1) in a broad temperature range of −50 to 120 °C (ΔT = 170 °C). The content of high pressure phase (γ-ZrW2O8) drops dramatically from 71.4% for the particle reinforced composite to 18.7% for the interpenetrating composite. Raman tests and numerical computational results indicated that the residual stress can be effectively released in the interpenetrating composites. This low dense and ultralow thermal expansion results in ideal materials for precision instruments and microelectronics component such as optical communication and gyroscope.

Abstract:Abstract Materials with zero-linear compression (ZLC) and zero-area compression (ZAC) hold great promises for specific applications retaining constant in specific directions or planes under external impaction. Up to now, no more than ten ZLC/ZAC materials have been reported, most of which are of very limited working pressure ranges (< 10 GPa). Herein, we report the observation of concurrent ZLC and ZAC in Li 2 Ti(IO 3 ) 6 with a “ Gear-Spring ” type structure over an ultra-wide pressure range (0 ~ 40 GPa). Structure analysis reveals that the rotatable metal coordination polyhedra (gears) and extremely compressible metal chains (springs) work together to form an exquisite mechanical unloading device with intrinsic ZLC and ZAC behavior. Moreover, Li 2 Ti(IO 3 ) 6 sets a record-wide ZLC/ZAC working pressure range (up to 40 GPa) among anisotropic compression materials. The demonstration of intrinsic and long-lasting ZLC/ZAC with a “ Gear-Spring ” mechanism paves the way to shock-resistant precision optics applied under extreme conditions.

Abstract:Metallic materials that exhibit negligible thermal expansion or zero thermal expansion (ZTE) have great merit for practical applications, but these materials are rare and their thermal expansions are difficult to control. Here, we successfully tailored the thermal expansion behaviors from strongly but abruptly negative to zero over wide temperature ranges in a series of (Gd,R)(Co,Fe)2 (R = Dy, Ho, Er) intermetallic compounds by tuning the composition to bring the first-order magnetic phase transition to second-order. Interestingly, an unusual isotropic ZTE property with a coefficient of thermal expansion of α l = 0.16(0) × 10-6 K-1 was achieved in cubic Gd0.25Dy0.75Co1.93Fe0.07 (GDCF) in the temperature range of 10-275 K. The short-wavelength neutron powder diffraction, synchrotron X-ray diffraction, and magnetic measurement studies evidence that this ZTE behavior was ascribed to the rare-earth-moment-dominated spontaneous volume magnetostriction, which can be controlled by an adjustable magnetic phase transition. The present work extends the scope of the ZTE family and provides an effective approach to exploring ZTE materials, such as by adjusting the magnetism or ferroelectricity-related phase transition in the family of functional materials.

Abstract:Exploring new abnormal thermal expansion materials is important to understand the nature of thermal expansion. Metal–organic framework (MOF) with unique structure flexibility is an ideal material to study the thermal expansion. This work adopts the high-resolution variable-temperature powder x-ray diffraction to investigate the structure and intrinsic thermal expansion in Sr-MOF ([Sr(DMPhH 2 IDC) 2 ] n ). It has the unique honeycomb structure with one-dimensional (1D) channels along the c -axis direction, the a – b plane displays layer structure. The thermal expansion behavior has strong relationship with the structure, ZTE appears in the a – b plane and large PTE along the c -axis direction. The possible mechanism is that the a / b layers have enough space for the transverse thermal vibration of polydentate ligands, while along the c -axis direction is not. This work not only reports one interesting zero thermal expansion material, but also provides new understanding for thermal expansion mechanism from the perspective of the structural model.

Abstract:Abstract Zero thermal expansion (ZTE) alloys possess unique dimensional stability, high thermal and electrical conductivities. Their practical application under heat and stress is however limited by their inherent brittleness because ZTE and plasticity are generally exclusive in a single-phase material. Besides, the performance of ZTE alloys is highly sensitive to change of compositions, so conventional synthesis methods such as alloying or the design of multiphase to improve its thermal and mechanical properties are usually inapplicable. In this study, by adopting a one-step eutectic reaction method, we overcome this challenge. A natural dual-phase composite with ZTE and plasticity was synthesized by melting 4 atom% holmium with pure iron. The dual-phase alloy shows moderate plasticity and strength, axial zero thermal expansion, and stable thermal cycling performance as well as low cost. By using synchrotron X-ray diffraction, in-situ neutron diffraction and microscopy, the critical mechanism of dual-phase synergy on both thermal expansion regulation and mechanical property enhancement is revealed. These results demonstrate that eutectic reaction is likely to be a universal and effective method for the design of high-performance intermetallic-compound-based ZTE alloys.

Abstract:Origin and composition dependence of the anisotropic thermomechanical properties are elucidated for Ba1-xSrxZn2Si2O7 (BZS) solid solutions. The high-temperature phase of BZS shows negative thermal expansion (NTE) along one crystallographic axis and highly anisotropic elastic properties characterized by X-ray diffraction experiments and simulations at the density functional theory level. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations provide accurate predictions of the anisotropic thermal expansion in excellent agreement with experimental observations. The NTE considerably decreases with increasing Sr content x. This is connected with the composition dependence of the vibrational density of states (VDOS) and the anisotropic Grüneisen parameters. The VDOS shifts to higher frequencies between 0-5 THz due to substitution of Ba with Sr. In the same frequency range, vibrational modes contributing most to the NTE are found. In addition, phonon calculations using the quasi-harmonic approximation revealed that the NTE is mainly connected with deformation of four-membered rings formed by SiO4 and ZnO4 tetrahedra. The thermomechanical and vibrational properties obtained in this work provide the basis for future studies facilitating the targeted design of BZS solid solutions as zero or negative thermal expansion material.

Abstract:Negative thermal expansion particles can compensate metal matrix composites to achieve near-zero thermal expansion materials. However, there are huge thermal residual mismatch stresses in the particles due to the thermal expansion mismatch between matrix and reinforcement. The use of hybrid reinforcement is required to solve the stress concentration problem. In this study, the hybrid Al matrix composites reinforced with ZrW2O8 and SiC reinforcements (SiCp, SiCnw) were fabricated by the pressure infiltration process. The effect of SiC content on microstructure, phase composition, thermal expansion and mechanical properties were examined by a combination of XRD, SEM, thermal dilatometer and bending tests. The results showed that the high-pressure phase (γ-ZrW2O8) content of hybrid metal matrix composites decreased with increasing SiC fraction. Among them, the composites containing 61.7 vol%ZrW2O8 and 3.3vol%SiCnw achieved the best performance with a bending strength of 100–150 MPa and a near-zero thermal expansion (2.0–3.0 ×10–6K−1) in a wide range of − 50–120 °C, which was attributed to the synergetic hybrid effects of SiCnw and ZrW2O8. This work opens up a new frontier for the design and preparation of lightweight zero-thermal expansion materials.

Abstract:Zero thermal expansion (ZTE) materials show excellent dimensionally stability under temperature fluctuations, which are urgently demanded in high-precision devices. However, most ZTE materials display high density and narrow operating temperature. This study presents a lightweight ZrW2O8/Al–Si composite that not only exhibits ZTE of 0.79 × 10−6 K−1 between 113 and 423 K, but also possesses an excellent high thermal conductivity of ∼33 W/(mK), which is nearly two orders of magnitude higher than that of ZrW2O8. Furthermore, the continuous aluminum in the ZTE composite contributes to its good electrical conducting property (3.0 × 104 (Ω cm)−1), surpassing that of titanium (2.3 × 104 (Ω cm)−1). Simulated and calculated results confirmed that the in-situ nanoparticles at the interface play a crucial role in dispersing thermal stress, resulting in minimal susceptibility to thermal cycling-induced changes in thermal expansion and strength. The present study opens a new frontier for the development of high-performance ZTE materials.

Abstract:Knowledge of controllable thermal expansion is a fundamental issue in the field of materials science and engineering. Direct blocking of the thermal expansions in positive thermal expansion materials is a challenging but fascinating task. Here we report a near zero thermal expansion (ZTE) of SnO2 achieved from twin crystal nanowires, which is highly correlated to the twin boundaries. Local structural evolutions followed by pair distribution function revealed a remarkable thermal local distortion along the twin boundary. Lattice dynamics investigated by Raman scattering evidenced the hardening of phonon frequency induced by the twin crystal compressing, giving rise to the ZTE of SnO2 nanowires. Further DFT calculation of Grüneisen parameters confirms the key role of compressive stress on ZTE. Our results provide an insight into the thermal expansion behavior regarding to twin crystal boundaries, which could be beneficial to the applications.

Abstract:Zero thermal expansion (ZTE) is one of the most fascinating phenomena in condensed-matter physics due to its strong correlation essence and great application prospect. However, the origin of ZTE remains elusive and it becomes an overwhelming challenge to realize the controllable design for which magnetic interaction plays a key role. In this work, with the help of neutron powder diffraction analysis, a noncoplanar [21, 12, 12 ] antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase is experimentally obtained in the antiperovskite system Mn3Sn0.5Zn0.5Cx. It shows ZTE behavior in a particularly wide temperature range from 10 to 162 K with linear thermal expansion coefficient 9.3 x 10-7 K-1. Herein, the theoretical spin model is combined with the experimental results to well understand the strong spin-lattice correlation between AFM ordering and ZTE behavior. The ZTE in the noncoplanar antiferromagnetic ordered system is attributed to the fierce competition between the nearest AFM direct exchange and ferromagnetic superexchange interaction, which is effectively tuned by C occupation. Our work not only paves the way toward understanding the physical origin of ZTE, but it also provides a feasible strategy for the ZTE design, which is also of great significance for promoting the study of a strong correlation system.
Two-dimensional zero thermal expansion in low-cost MnxFe5−xSi3 alloys via integrating crystallographic texture and magneto-volume effect

Abstract:Zero thermal expansion (ZTE) alloys have unique aspects in the application of the engineering of precise dimensional control. However, the harsh conditions to realize ZTE, i.e., appropriate coupling among spin, lattice, and charge upon heating, have limited the ZTE alloys by very few numbers of species. In this work, we report a route to achieving two-dimensional (2D) ZTE behavior by regulating crystallographic texture and magneto-volume effects (MVEs) in volumetric positive thermal expansion alloys. This is illustrated in a series of MnxFe5−xSi3 compounds by those earth-abundant elements. As a result, a 2D ZTE performance with a coefficient of thermal expansion αl = 0.45 × 10−7 K−1 over a broad temperature window of 10–310 K was observed in MnFe4Si3. The experimental results by synchrotron X-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, microscopy, and magnetization measurements reveal that such a ZTE behavior is strongly coupled with fiber crystallographic texture and magnetic moment at the crystallographic 6g site that dominates MVEs in the a-b plane. The competition between ferromagnetic Fe4d-Fe6g (JFM) and antiferromagnetic Mn4d-Mn6g (JAFM) interactions makes the Mn1.5Fe3.5Si3 and Mn2Fe3Si3 compounds show mixed magnetism and negative thermal expansion (NTE). The integral approach presented here can be used to extend the scope of ZTE/NTE species in other magnetic or ferroelectric materials.

Abstract:Zero thermal expansion (ZTE) with a negligible coefficient of thermal expansion av of 2.4 ppm K−1 in a broad temperature range is achieved owing to the significant contribution of interstitial C into a Hf–Ta–Fe magnet. The corresponding mechanism of tuning normal positive thermal expansion into intriguingly ZTE via enhanced magnetoelastic coupling during magnetic transition is clarified by comprehensive property measurements, direct observation of magnetic transition, and theoretical calculations. Zero‐thermal‐expansion (ZTE) alloys, as dimensionally stable materials, are urgently required in many fields, particularly in highly advanced modern industries. In this study, high‐performance ZTE with a negligible coefficient of thermal expansion av as small as 2.4 ppm K−1 in a broad temperature range of 85–245 K is discovered in Hf0.85Ta0.15Fe2C0.01 magnet. It is demonstrated that the addition of trace interstitial atom C into Ta‐substituted Hf0.85Ta0.15Fe2 exhibits significant capability to tune the normal positive thermal expansion into high‐performance ZTE via enhanced magnetoelastic coupling in stabilized ferromagnetic structure. Moreover, direct observation of the magnetic transition between ferromagnetic and triangular antiferromagnetic states via Lorentz transmission electron microscopy, along with corresponding theoretical calculations, further uncovers the manipulation mechanism of ZTE and negative thermal expansion. A convenient and effective method to optimize thermal expansion and achieve ZTE with interstitial C addition may result in broadened applications based on the strong correlation between the magnetic properties and crystal structure.

Abstract:The lattice metamaterials with zero, large positive or negative coefficients of thermal expansions (CTEs) have attracted much attention because of urgent demands in practical engineering structure. Due to the porosity of the above lattice metamaterials, most of structures made of them are also porous and are unsuitable to the outermost need to seal, for example, the skin of supersonic vehicles. In this paper, a new design concept of dual-constituent sandwich panel with in-plane zero thermal expansion is proposed. Different from the structures made of porous metamaterial with zero CTE, the upper and lower face-sheets of sandwich panels are all solid and not porous. The counterintuitive properties come from the special design of face-sheets, which are comprised of bi-layer materials with different positive CTEs. Abstract:A superior piezoelectric coefcient and diminutive lattice thermal conductivity are advantageous for the application of a two-dimensional semiconductor in piezoelectric and thermoelectric devices, whereas an imperfect piezoelectric coefcient and large lattice thermal conductivity limit the practical application of the material. In this paper, we investigate how the equibiaxial strain regulates the electric band, mechanic property, piezoelectric, and thermal transport properties. The tensile strain can deduce the bandgap of the monolayer CrX 2 (X=S, Se, Te), whereas the compressive strain has the opposite effect. Additionally, the transition from semiconductor to metal and the transition between direct and indirect band gaps will occur at appropriate strain values, so the electronic band can be effectively regulated. The reason is the different sensitivity of the energy corresponding to K and Γ on the valence band to the strain due to the changes of different orbital overlaps. The tensile strain can effectively improve the flexibility of monolayers CrX 2 , which provides a possibility for the application of flexible electronic devices. Furthermore, the tensile strain can improve the piezoelectric strain coefcient of monolayers CrX 2 . Using Slack's formulation, we calculate the lattice thermal conductivity, and the tensile biaxial strain can reduce the lattice thermal conductivity. Our research provides a strategy to enhance the piezoelectric and flexible electronic application and decrease the lattice thermal conductivity, which can beneft the thermoelectric application.

Abstract:This paper proposes that it will be an effective way to discover and explore organic negative thermal expansion (NTE) materials based on the specific topologies in inorganic NTE materials. Various NTE behaviors from the uniaxial, area, and volume-NTE can be achieved by adjusting the topology, for instance, quartz-like and diamond-like. Zn(ISN) 2 and InH(BDC) metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with quartz-like topology have been studied by first principles calculations. The calculated area-NTE of Zn(ISN) 2 and uniaxial-NTE of InH(BDC) within quasi-harmonic approximation (QHA) agree well with the experimental data. Through the calculation of Grüneisen parameters, it is shown that low-frequency optical phonons appear dominant resulting in their NTE, but the coupling to high-frequency phonons is of greater ultimate importance. The lattice vibrational modes of great contribution to area-NTE of Zn(ISN) 2 and uniaxial-NTE of InH(BDC) are analyzed in detail. Also, four MOFs with diamond-like topology are predicted to exhibit volume-NTE behavior. Moreover, it is found that there is a bulk modulus anomaly in some studied MOFs with the quartz-like and diamond-like framework, where the temperature dependence of bulk modulus does not follow the inverse dependence on that of volume. These specific topologies provide key geometric frameworks for various NTE behaviors of MOFs, and meanwhile, the local structure and bond environment in MOFs can lead to abnormal interatomic force, i.e. , bulk modulus anomaly. This abnormal elastic property also deserves more attention.
