Abstract:We propose a simple structure of a metamaterial (MM) to achieve near-perfect narrowband absorption. This MM utilizes both a plasmonic antenna and its complimentary structure for trapping electromagnetic fields, without the use of a complete ground plate compared to conventional designs. The simple design opens a new possibility of engineering perfect absorbers that can be easily fabricated, and thus many potential applications in mid-infrared include thermal imaging, energy harvesting, localized biological sensing, optical tweezers, and laser beam shaping.
Design of a Far-Infrared Broadband Metamaterial Absorber with High Absorption and Ultra-Broadband

Abstract:We designed a metamaterial far-infrared absorber based on an MDM (metal–dielectric–metal) structure. We made a hollow crossed Ti microstructure at the top of the absorber. It is known that the coupling effect of equipartitional exciton resonance and intrinsic absorption at the surface of the depleting material has a strong influence on the absorber. Based on this, we investigated the absorption characteristics of the absorber using the Finite Difference in Time Domain (FDTD) theory. The results show that the absorber absorbed more than 90% of the light within a bandwidth of 12.01 μm. The absorber has an average absorption of 94.08% in the longwave infrared (LWIR) to ultra-longwave infrared (UWIR) bands (10.90–22.91 μm). The polarization insensitivity of the designed absorber is demonstrated by analyzing the absorption spectra of the absorber at different polarization angles. By adjusting the relevant geometric parameters, the absorption spectrum can be independently adjusted. Furthermore, the absorber exhibits good incidence angle insensitivity in both transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes. The absorbers are simple and easy to configure for applications such as optical cloaking, infrared heat emitters, and photodetectors. These advantages will greatly benefit the application of absorbers in practice.

Abstract:A triple-band perfect plasmonic metamaterial absorber based on a metal/insulator/metal (MIM) structure is designed. A new freedom through tuning the thicknesses of each ring structures is introduced to realize a quasi-three-dimensional perfect absorber at three extinction wavelengths by using the finite difference time domain method. The physical machine is explained by the time domain field analyses and the coupled mode theory. The characteristics of the absorber make our proposed strategy applicable for the design of more general multiband and broadband perfect absorbers. In addition, these perfect absorbing metamaterials are found to exhibit excellent performance in refractive index sensing.

Abstract:We demonstrate that the metamaterial perfect absorber behaves as a meta-cavity bounded between a resonant metasurface and a metallic thin-film reflector. The perfect absorption is achieved by the Fabry-Perot cavity resonance via multiple reflections between the "quasi-open" boundary of resonator and the "closed" boundary of reflector. The characteristic features including angle independence, ultra-thin thickness and strong field localization can be well explained by this model. With this model, metamaterial perfect absorber can be redefined as a meta-cavity exhibiting high Q-factor, strong field enhancement and extremely high photonic density of states, thereby promising novel applications for high performance sensor, infrared photodetector and cavity quantum electrodynamics devices.

Abstract:Metamaterial perfect absorbers from microwaves to optical part of the electromagnetic spectrum has been intensely studied for its ability to absorb electromagnetic radiation. Perfect absorption of light by metamaterials have opened up new opportunities for application oriented functionalities such as efficient sensors and emitters. We present an absorber based sensing scheme at the terahertz frequencies and discuss optimized designs to achieve high frequency and amplitude sensitivities. The major advantage of a perfect metamaterial absorber as a sensor is the sensitive shift in the absorber resonance frequency along with the sharp change in the amplitude of the resonance due to strong interaction of the analyte with the electric and the magnetic fields at resonant perfect absorption frequency. We compare the sensing performance of the perfect metamaterial absorber with its complementary structural design and planar metasurface with identical structure. The best FoM values obtained for the absorber sensor here is 2.67 which we found to be significantly higher than the identical planar metamaterial resonator design. We further show that the sensitivity of the sensor depends on the analyte thickness with the best sensitivity values obtained for thicknesses approaching {\lambda}/4n, with {\lambda} being the free space resonance wavelength and n being the refractive index of the analyte. Application of metamaterial absorbers as sensors in the terahertz spectral domain would be of tremendous significance due to several materials having unique spectral signature at the terahertz frequencies.

Abstract:This paper proposes a perfect metamaterial absorber based on a dielectric−dielectric−metal structure, which realizes ultra-narrowband dual-band absorption in the near-infrared band. The maximum Q factor is 484. The physical mechanism that causes resonance is hybrid coupling between magnetic polaritons resonance and plasmon resonance. At the same time, the research results show that the intensity of magnetic polaritons resonance is much greater than the intensity of the plasmon resonance. By changing the structural parameters and the incident angle of the light source, it is proven that the absorber is tunable, and the working angle tolerance is 15°. In addition, the sensitivity and figure of merit when used as a refractive index sensor are also analyzed. This design provides a new idea for the design of high-Q optical devices, which can be applied to photon detection, spectral sensing, and other high-Q multispectral fields.

Abstract:Metasurfaces have emerged as a unique group of two-dimensional ultra-compact subwavelength devices for perfect wave absorption due to their exceptional capabilities of light modulation. Nonetheless, achieving high absorption, particularly with multi-band broadband scalability for specialized scenarios, remains a challenge. As an example, the presence of atmospheric windows, as dictated by special gas molecules in different infrared regions, highly demands such scalable modulation abilities for multi-band absorption and filtration. Herein, by leveraging the hybrid effect of Fabry-Perot resonance, magnetic dipole resonance and electric dipole resonance, we achieved multi-broadband absorptivity in three prominent infrared atmospheric windows concurrently, with an average absorptivity of 87.6% in the short-wave infrared region (1.4-1.7 μm), 92.7% in the mid-wave infrared region (3.2-5 μm) and 92.4% in the long-wave infrared region (8-13 μm), respectively. The well-confirmed absorption spectra along with its adaptation to varied incident angles and polarization angles of radiations reveal great potential for fields like infrared imaging, photodetection and communication.

Abstract:Metamaterials are frequently employed as sensors in a wide range of applications because of their special qualities that are not present in nature. This study focus on the design, fabrication and measurement of a novel shape metamaterial absorber for moisture-sensing applications. The proposed metamaterial absorber consists of modified cross along with split square resonator shape conductor on top of a 0.6 mm thick substrate. Parametric studies are also performed on the different design parameters, such as the thickness of the substrate and split square resonator etc. to figure out the optimal value of design variables. The simulated results of the proposed absorber illustrate the maximum reflection coefficient at 9.9 GHz. The obtained reflection coefficient value is − 30.5 dB at the resonant frequency The measured results of the absorber also show good agreement with the simulated results. Furthermore, the proposed metamaterial-based absorber utilize as a sensor. The proposed sensor design demonstrates excellent results in terms of resonance shift, sensitivity, linearity, Q factor, and figure of merit, making it a good candidate for moisture-sensing applications.

Abstract:Mid-infrared perfect absorbers (PAs) based on metamaterials have many applications in material analysis and spectral detection thanks to the associated strong light–matter interaction. Most of the PAs are built as ‘metal nanostructure’-insulator-metals (MIM). In this paper, we propose an ultra-narrow band absorber based on dielectric metasurface with a metal film substrate. The absorptance comes from the plasmonic absorption in the metal film, where the absorption is enhanced (while the band of that is compressed) by the super cavity effect of the dielectric metasurface. Based on our numerical calculation, the full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) can reach 67 nm at 8 μm (8‰), which is more than two orders of magnitude smaller than the resonance wavelength and much narrower than the theoretical FWHMs of MIM absorbers. Moreover, we studied their application in infrared thermal imaging, which also has more benefits than MIM absorbers. This kind of hybrid dielectric metasurface provides a new route to achieve ultra-narrow band perfect absorbers in the mid-infrared regime and can be broadly applied in detectors, thermal emitters and bio-spectroscopy.

Abstract:We present the design for an absorbing metamaterial element with near unity absorbance. Our structure consists of two metamaterial resonators that couple separately to electric and magnetic fields so as to absorb all incident radiation within a single unit cell layer. We fabricate, characterize, and analyze a metamaterial absorber with a slightly lower predicted absorbance of 96%. This achieves a simulated full width at half maximum (FWHM) absorbance of 4% thus making this material ideal for imaging purposes. Unlike conventional absorbers, our metamaterial consists solely of metallic elements. The underlying substrate can therefore be chosen independently of the substrate's absorptive qualities and optimized for other parameters of interest. We detail the design and simulation process that led to our metamaterial, and our experiments demonstrate a peak absorbance greater than 88% at 11.5 GHz.

Narrowband perfect metasurface absorber based on impedance matching

Abstract:We presented a numerical investigation of a metamaterial narrowband perfect absorber conducted via a finite element method based on commercially available COMSOL software. The periodic array of silicon meta-atoms (MAs) are placed on 80 nm thick gold layer. The broadband light at normal incidence is blocked by the gold layer and silicon MAs are used to excite the surface plasmon by scattering light through it. Maximum absorption of 95.7 % is obtained at the resonance wavelength of 1137.5 nm due to the perfect impedance matching of the electric and magnetic dipoles. The absorption is insensitive to the wide-angle of incidence ranging from 0 to 80 degrees. Abstract:Abstract Herein, we have presented a computation study of a metasurface (MS) narrowband perfect absorber performed utilizing the three-dimensional finite element method. In the first part of the paper, the periodic sequence of silicon meta-atoms (MAs) is positioned on a ∼100 nm gold thin-film. The gold thin-film obstructs a broadband light at normal incidence, and silicon MAs are utilized to stimulate the surface plasmon by scattering light through it. The highest absorption of 96% is procured at 930.26 nm in the air medium which can be further enhanced by using a layered structure of MAs deposited on gold. The MAs are composed of Si/SiO 2 /Si with an optimized layers height. Consequently, the perfect impedance matching of the electric and magnetic dipoles takes place providing a 99% of absorption insensitive to the incidence angle of light and almost negligible reflection at a resonating wavelength of 889.4 nm. This feature allows us to utilize this device as a plasmonic sensor. That is why, in the second part of the paper, the proposed device design is studied for the detection of the refractive index of the surrounding medium. The sensitivity and figure of merits of the MS device are in the range of 460–492 nm RIU −1 and 76.7–82 RIU −1 , respectively. We claim that the anticipated MS element can be employed in solar photovoltaic and biomedical sensing purposes.

Abstract:Metamaterials integrated with graphene exhibit tremendous freedom in tailoring their optical properties, particularly in the infrared region, and are desired for a wide range of applications, such as thermal imaging, cloaking, and biosensing. In this article, we numerically and experimentally demonstrate an ultrathin (total thickness < λ 0 / 15 ) and electrically tunable mid-infrared perfect absorber based on metal–insulator–metal (MIM) structured metamaterials. The Q-values of the absorber can be tuned through two rather independent parameters, with geometrical structures of metamaterials tuning radiation loss (Qr) of the system and the material loss (tanδ) to further change mainly the intrinsic loss (Qa). This concise mapping of the structural and material properties to resonant mode loss channels enables a two-stage optimization for real applications: geometrical design before fabrication and then electrical tuning as a post-fabrication and fine adjustment knob. As an example, our device demonstrates an electrical and on-site tuning of ~5 dB change in absorption near the perfect absorption region. Our work provides a general guideline for designing and realizing tunable infrared devices and may expand the applications of perfect absorbers for mid-infrared sensors, absorbers, and detectors in extreme spatial-limited circumstances.
Wideband Close Perfect Meta Surface Absorber for Solar Photovoltaic and Optical Spectrum Applications

Abstract:The leading research challenge is to develop a meta-surface absorber design for optimal performance across ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared wavelengths. In ongoing research, a meta-surface absorber is being introduced, designed to achieve near-perfect absorption of 99% across the 250-2500 nm UV-Vis-NIR spectrum for both Transverse electric (TE) and Transverse magnetic (TM) polarized waves. The aimed design features a symmetrical resonator pattern, resulting in a polarization-insensitive absorption response. Additionally, the absorption response demonstrates robustness when altering the geometric parameters of the meta-surface unit cell. Precise simulation and modelling of the proposed meta-surface absorber are achieved by Employing a Finite Difference Frequency Domain (FDFD) solver, coupled with the Finite Integration Technique (FIT) and a tetrahedral mesh component. Verification of absorption characteristics is conducted through three frameworks: impedance matching, interference, and an equivalent circuit model. The suggested meta-structure design exhibits a uniform absorption response, as determined through considerations of impedance matching, interference theory, and the equivalent circuit theory. The PCR value is significantly lower than recent studies, reinforcing that the proposed meta-surface primarily serves as an absorber, not a polarization converter. The absorption response of the suggested meta-structure design remains consistent across the range of electromagnetic wave polarization angles from 0 to 90 degrees for both TE and TM waves. Furthermore, the absorption response of the proposed design demonstrates stability up to an incident angle of 70 degrees for electromagnetic waves. The distribution of electric and magnetic fields, along with surface current density on the proposed design, validates the existence of localized, propagating, and cavity surface plasmon resonance. These collectively create anti-parallel current flow, leading to the absorption of incident EM waves. Furthermore, the suggested design achieves a solar energy thermal conversion efficiency of 99% across the operational spectrum at a working temperature of 573 K, substantiating its potential for use as a solar absorber. Thus, this study presents a meta-structure unit cell that addresses the challenge with near-perfect absorption, polarization independence, and angle robustness. Applications include photodetection, thermal mapping, solar harvesting, and photo-trapping.

Abstract:A broadband, high‐absorption metamaterial absorber based on a metallic–dielectric disc structure is proposed, achieving over 90% absorbance in the 1500 to 4000 nm range with a bandwidth of 2500 nm. The absorber is polarization‐insensitive and capable of wide‐angle absorption, making it potentially valuable for infrared detection and imaging applications. A metamaterial absorber with broadband and high absorption based on a metal–dielectric disc–ring structure is proposed. The finite difference time domain (FDTD) method is used to analyze the absorption performance of the absorber. The results show that the absorption of the proposed absorber is more than 90% in the band range from 1500 to 4000 nm with an absorption bandwidth of 2500 nm. The absorber has polarization‐insensitive properties due to the high symmetry of the structure. In addition, the absorber has large angle absorption characteristics with average absorptions of 92% and 82% at an incidence angle of 60° in TM and TE modes. The surface plasmon resonance (SPR), localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) at the metal interface, and cavity resonance between the circular slits work in synergy to enhance the absorption and broaden the absorption bandwidth. The proposed absorber has a simple structure, easily accessible material, and excellent performance with potential applications in infrared detection, imaging, and other fields.

Abstract:Metamaterials are widely studied in bio-photonics because of their flexible and tunable resonance wavelengths in the near-infrared region and their particular relevance to biological tissues. In this paper, we propose for the first time a perfect absorber that is switchable between triple-band and dual-band absorption. The narrowband metamaterial perfect absorber has a conventional metal–dielectric–metal structure, which consists of an array of silver disks, a silica dielectric layer and a gold substrate. Its working performance is mainly determined by the height, radius and period of the top silver disks. By adjusting these parameters, the perfect absorber can be switched between triple-band and dual-band absorption with the peaks showing close to 100% absorbance.
