Abstract:Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the in vivo performance, including bone regeneration and biomaterial degradation, of three hydroxyapatite-based bone substitutes at surgically created defects in the cranium of rabbits. Materials and Methods: A bovine-derived hydroxyapatite (BHA), a synthetic hydroxyapatite (SHA), and a nano-hydroxyapatite with collagen I (nHAC) composite were characterized and then placed in calvarial defects in rabbits. After surgery at 6 weeks and 12 weeks, the animals were sacrificed for further microcomputed tomography, histologic, and histomorphometric analyses. The amounts of newly formed bone, residual grafting materials, connective tissues, and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase staining positive multinucleate cells were evaluated. Results: The three hydroxyapatite-based bone substitutes displayed different surface topography. BHA had the highest amount of newly formed bone at both 6 weeks and 12 weeks, yet no significant difference was found between the three groups at 6 weeks. The amount of residual materials was significantly higher in the SHA group than the other groups at both time points. The amount of connective tissue was highest in BHA. More multinucleated cells were observed in the nHAC group. Conclusion: The three tested bone substitutes are suitable for grafting defects related to early bone healing. BHA had a better impact on bone formation with the prolongation of time. An integration of collagen type I and nano-hydroxyapatite may not improve bone regeneration of pure synthetic hydroxyapatite but helps to modify the degradation rate of pure hydroxyapatite.
Experimental onlay implantation study on the cranium and face of rabbits: membranous versus endochondral bone

Abstract:Objective To study the absorption mechanism of free bone autograft and compare the advantages of the membranous and endocbondral bone autografts in rabbits. Methods Thirty adult male New Zealand white rabbits were randomly divided into two groups of fifteen each. Cranium graft or rib graft was implanted on each side of the snouts of the animal. The onlay grafts were harvested at 12th and 24th week. Then gross observation, volume measurement, histological study and scanning electron microscopical observation were performed.Results Cranium graft underwent less resorption than rib graft and the cortical bone underwent more resorption than cancellous bone. The number and arrangement of collagen fibrils at 24 weeks was more and better than that of 12 weeks. The collagen fibrils of the cranium graft were more numerous and regular than those of the rib graft at 12 weeks, but they were similar at 24 weeks. Although the grafts survived, their volume continued to decrease due to stress. Conclusions Membranous bone implanted on cranium of the rabbit is better than endochondral bone. Remodeling time of a cranium graft is shorter than a rib graft. The graft volume is also relating to stress.

Abstract:Ear, Nose &Throat Journal, Ahead of Print. Objective: Nasal osteotomy is a crucial step in rhinoplasty, explicitly addressing the open roof deformity in nasal bones. This study aimed to assess and compare the recovery patterns associated with 4 distinct osteotomy techniques in a rabbit model. Materials and Methods: Twenty white New Zealand rabbits weighing 2.5 to 3.0 kg were included in the study. Median osteotomies were performed on the left side using piezosurgery and on the right side using an oscillating micro-saw. Additionally, internal osteotomy was executed on the right side and external osteotomy on the left side, both performed with a chisel across all rabbits. Ten rabbits were sacrificed on the 7th day, while the remaining 10 were sacrificed on the 15th day for subsequent histological examination. The granulation tissue formation (GTF), vascularization, inflammation, collagen fibril content, osteotomy gap width, and new bone formation were evaluated in hematoxylin and eosin and Masson's trichrome-stained sections. Results: On the 7th day, piezosurgery demonstrated statistically-significant advantages in terms of GTF, neovascularization, and collagen fibril quantity when compared to the oscillating micro-saw (P < .05). Furthermore, a statistically-significant difference was observed among the groups concerning the distribution of connective tissue organization between the 7th and 15th days (P < .05). Conclusions: This study's findings unequivocally establish that bone healing after osteotomy with piezosurgery surpasses that achieved with an oscillating micro-saw in this rabbit model.

Abstract:Objective To investigates the growth,amplification and moulding of the rabbit's autologous auricular cartilage grafting by using an experimental way and to explore it clinical significance.Methods Seven immature New Zealand rabbit were selected for the experiment.The diced auricular cartilages got from the radix of the rabbits' ears were autochthonous grafted in the back subcutaneously using an absorbable medical gelatin sponge as the carrier.The specimens were harvested after 8 weeks,using general observation and histologic staining to inspect the situation of growth,amplification and moulding of the autografts.Three autologous groups were designed,a small quantity of diced cartilages without perichondrium(group a),a great quantity of diced cartilages without perichondrium(group b),a great quantity of diced cartilages with perichondrium(group c),and a great quantity of diced cartilages with perichondrium plus a silicone tooting for moulding.The differences of development were compared among the different groups.Result The diced autologous auricular cartilage grafts were survived and got a general amplification result.The efficiencies among three groups were not significantly differing(P>0.05).By the silicone's moulding in vivo,the grafts got an expectant shape after the transplantation.Conclusions A general amplification can be achieved by autologous grafting of diced auricular cartilages,and histologic staining shows the survival of the transplanted cartilages and a potential tendency of newly cartilaginous tissue forming,It means that there is the possibility to fix the chondric deficiency using mild autologous materials by expansion.At the same time,the moulding effect by the silicone also shows the possibility of the autograft plasty by using some tooting in vivo or in vitro clinically to achieve the esthetic purpose.
Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction in a Rabbit Model Using Silk-Collagen Scaffold and Comparison with Autograft.

Abstract:The objective of the present study was to perform an in vivo assessment of a novel silk-collagen scaffold for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. First, a silk-collagen scaffold was fabricated by combining sericin-extracted knitted silk fibroin mesh and type I collagen to mimic the components of the ligament. Scaffolds were electron-beam sterilized and rolled up to replace the ACL in 20 rabbits in the scaffold group, and autologous semitendinosus tendons were used to reconstruct the ACL in the autograft control group. At 4 and 16 weeks after surgery, grafts were retrieved and analyzed for neoligament regeneration and tendon-bone healing. To evaluate neoligament regeneration, H&E and immunohistochemical staining was performed, and to assess tendon-bone healing, micro-CT, biomechanical test, H&E and Russell-Movat pentachrome staining were performed. Cell infiltration increased over time in the scaffold group, and abundant fibroblast-like cells were found in the core of the scaffold graft at 16 weeks postoperatively. Tenascin-C was strongly positive in newly regenerated tissue at 4 and 16 weeks postoperatively in the scaffold group, similar to observations in the autograft group. Compared with the autograft group, tendon-bone healing was better in the scaffold group with trabecular bone growth into the scaffold. The results indicate that the silk-collagen scaffold has considerable potential for clinical application.
A Preliminary Study Comparing Microfracture and Local Adherent Transplantation of Autologous Adipose-Derived Stem Cells Followed by Intraarticular Injection of Platelet-Rich Plasma for the Treatment of Chondral Defects in Rabbits

Abstract:Objective This study aimed to compare microfracture and application of adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) by local adherent technique enhanced by platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to provide a new approach for the repair of cartilage defect. Design Full-thickness cylindrical defects were created in the medial femoral condyle in 9 New Zealand White rabbits (5 months old, 4.65 ± 0.20 kg). Two groups of rabbits ( n = 3) were either treated with ADSCs (Group 1) or the microfracture technique (Group 2) following intraarticular injection of PRP 3 times in weekly intervals. Rabbits in control group ( n = 3) remained untreated. The outcome was assessed macroscopically, histologically, and immunohistochemically. Results At the end of week 12, Group 1 showed better defect filling compared with Group 2. Specimens treated with the combination of ADSCs and PRP exhibited significant differences from the other groups in all criteria of International Cartilage Repair Society macroscopic scoring system. Conclusions Intraarticular injection of autologous PRP in combination with transplantation of autologous ADSCs by local adherent technique enhances the quality of cartilage defect repair with better results in comparison with microfracture surgery in a rabbit model.

Abstract:Background This study aimed to compare the degree of scar contracture following artificial dermis grafting after excision of basal cell carcinoma on the nose categorized by defect location into three nasal subunits. Methods Anthropometric analysis was conducted on seven parameters using patients' photographs to compare changes between preoperative and postoperative measurements based on nasal subunits. Defect locations were classified as: (1) dorsum and sidewalls (D zone), (2) tip (T zone), and (3) alar lobule (A zone). Results The greatest change in alar height asymmetry was observed in zone A. Changes in nasal tip projection ratio and nasofrontal angle were the most significant in zone T. No other measurements showed statistically significant differences among the three zones. Conclusions Careful consideration is recommended when applying artificial dermis grafting in zones A and T. Conversely, zone D appears to be the most suitable for artificial dermis grafting.

Abstract:Background: Autologous costal cartilage (ACC) and irradiated homologous costal cartilage (IHCC) are commonly used in septorhinoplasty when there is insufficient septal cartilage for grafting. Objective: To assess the surgical outcomes of patients who underwent septorhinoplasty with either ACC or IHCC as measured by rates of infection, resorption, warping, and revision rate. Methods: A retrospective analysis of patients who underwent rhinoplasty with ACC or IHCC at a single academic institution was performed. Demographic data, surgical details, antibiotic use, and outcomes, including surgical duration, infection, resorption, warping, and revision rate, were analyzed using Fisher's exact test, chi-squared test, and logistic regression. Results: One hundred forty-three patients were identified. The median age was 48 years (interquartile range: 35-57.5) and 62.2% (n = 89) were female, 61 patients (42.7%) underwent ACC, and 82 (57.3%) IHCC. Revision rate in both groups was similar (ACC = 14.8%, IHCC = 14.6%; p = 0.98). There was no difference in infection rate (ACC = 4.9%, IHCC = 3.7%; p = 0.71). Postoperative deformity and nasal obstruction were the most common indications for revision surgery. Surgical time was shorter with IHCC (p < 0.01). Mean follow-up time was 26.5 months (±25) for ACC, and 16 months (±12) for IHCC. Conclusions: ACC and IHCC are similar in terms of effectiveness and safety in septorhinoplasty.

Abstract:Supplemental Digital Content is available in the text Abstract Irradiated cadaveric costal cartilage (CC) has been utilized as an alternative to autologous cartilage (AC) in functional and aesthetic nasal surgery. The impact of graft choice between AC and CC on functional outcomes in rhinoplasty has yet to be studied. A systematic review was performed in PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines to identify comparative studies evaluating the efficacy and safety of CC in nasal surgery. Functional and aesthetic outcomes and complications were reviewed and compared between AC and CC. Meta-analytic comparisons were performed when appropriate using data from comparative studies using a random-effects model. Four studies met inclusion criteria. The indication for surgery was functional in the majority of cases, and 34.6% of cases were revision rhino- or septorhinoplasties. Disparate data across studies prevented meta-analysis on functional outcomes; however, qualitative review of function outcomes demonstrated comparable outcomes between the CC and AC groups. No differences in graft infection, warping, and resorption rates were detected. Analysis of all graft-related complications was higher in the CC group (P = 0.02); however, when AC donor site-related complications were included, no significance between the two groups was observed. In conclusion, limited, high quality data was available for analysis. Of the available studies, this systematic review suggest that the use of AC or CC may lead to comparable results in terms of functional outcomes. More long-term studies directly comparing AC and CC functional outcomes would be welcomed.

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of polydioxanone (PDS) plate and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) on the regeneration of cartilage grafts, which are frequently used in nasal and septal surgery. Methods: Fifteen white New Zealand Albino-type female rabbits were used in the study. Our study was carried out on 4 different applications on each animal: cartilage only, cartilage+PRP, cartilage+PDS plate, and cartilage+PRP+PDS plate, and in 3 different periods: the first month, the second month, and the third month. Results: A significant difference was obtained between the groups using cartilage+PRP and cartilage+PRP+PDS only in the first month. When both application types were compared, a statistically significant decrease was found in the histopathological cartilage viability score after PDS use. In examining peripheral chondrocyte proliferation, a statistically significant difference was found only in the third-month comparison. When the group using only cartilage was compared with the group using cartilage+PDS, it was determined that peripheral chondrocyte proliferation was significantly reduced at the end of the third month with PDS. In evaluating fibrosis and foreign body reaction, a statistically significant increase was detected using a PDS plate. In histopathological cartilage viability score statistical analysis, a significant difference was obtained between the groups using cartilage+PRP and cartilage+PRP+PDS only in the first month. Degeneration in the cartilage structure was observed macroscopically in the specimens where the PDS plate was used. Shape change and cartilage deformation were observed in the PDS plate specimens. Conclusions: When the results were examined, this observation coincided with the statistically significant increase in foreign body reaction and fibrosis in the PDS plate groups. However, these results contradicted our hypothesis before the study and the information in the literature. Our results will help provide preliminary information and guidance for future studies and offer a different perspective.

Implanted cartilaginous grafts following rhinoplasty: A retrospective histopathological study

Abstract:To describe histopathological features of rhinoplasty-related implanted cartilages, 83 cartilages surgically removed from 42 patients (2 men and 40 women) with a median age of 28.0 years (range, 21-47 years) following correction/revision rhinoplasty were examined. These cartilages included 16 autologous costal cartilages (ACCs), 14 irradiated homologous costal cartilages (IHCCs), 24 autologous nasal cartilages (ANCs), 2 irradiated homologous nasal cartilages (IHNCs), 14 autologous ear cartilages (ECs) and 13 combined cartilaginous grafts. The median chondrocytic viability in ACCs (35.9%) was higher than that of IHCCs (0.0%) and ECs (21.4%) (both, P<0.001), and showed no significant differences compared with the viability in ANCs (41.3%) (P=0.455). The median organized rate of chondroid matrix in ACCs, IHCCs, ANCs and ECs was 2.5, 1.4, 0.9 and 2.0%, respectively, and there were no significant differences among them (P=0.909). The present study revealed not only enlarged chondrocytic lacunae, chondrocytic cloning and binucleated/trinucleated chondrocytes, but also a possible transition between chondrocytes and fibroblasts in 6 ACCs, 3 ANCs and 1 EC, lipomembranous fat necrosis (LFN)-like bodies in 15 ACCs, 14 IHCCs, 3 ANCs and 5 ECs, and chondrocytic vacuolar changes in 15 ACCs, 22 ANCs, 2 IHNCs and 16 ECs. A histological transition between LFN-like bodies and chondrocytic vacuoles was focally observed in 2 ACCs and 1 ANC. The present findings suggested that the stability of implanted cartilage did not depend on chondrocytic viability only. Viable chondrocytes preserve implanted chondroid matrix, but also may, in part, induce organization through their transformation into fibroblasts. LFN-like bodies are considered to be an underrecognized form of vacuolar change-related chondrocytic necrosis.

Abstract:Objective To further understand the ultrastructures of autogenous cartilage grafts in expanded skin.Methods The ultrastructures of autogenous cartilage grafts in expanded skin were examined by using scanning andtransmission electromicroscopy. Results Under transmission electromicroscope in young rabbits group, the abnormalchondrocytes showed thinning of surface bulging; within the cytoplasm the number of rough endoplasmic reticulum decreased with absence of Golgi complex, and variable round-sized lipid droplets were seen occupying about one-fourth ofthe total number of chondrocytes. In adult rabbit group, most chondrocytes enlarged significantly with irregular cellshape, and more lipid droplets within the cytoplasm, they even fused into larger ones and occupied the whole cytoplasm., then the peripheral organelles atrophied gradually and disappeared finally. Under scanning electromicroscope,the surface of the autogenous cartilage grafts bing covered by fibrous tissue, beneath which there was no evidence of degeneration. Conclusion It is suggested that the lipid droplets within the cytoplasm are the stored form of lipids, whichprovides the energy requirement for metabolism and plays important role during chondrocytic growth, concomitently, itis also a marker of cellular degeneration. Comparison of different chondrocytes for use in tissue engineering of cartilage model structures

Abstract:This study compares bovine chondrocytes harvested from four different animal locations--nasoseptal, articular, costal, and auricular--for tissue-engineered cartilage modeling. While the work serves as a preliminary investigation for fabricating a human ear model, the results are important to tissue- engineered cartilage in general. Chondrocytes were cultured and examined to determine relative cell proliferation rates, type II collagen and aggrecan gene expression, and extracellular matrix production. Respective chondrocytes were then seeded onto biodegradable poly(L-lactide-epsilon-caprolactone) disc-shaped scaffolds. Cell-copolymer constructs were cultured and subsequently implanted in the subcutaneous space of athymic mice for up to 20 weeks. Neocartilage development in harvested constructs was assessed by molecular and histological means. Cell culture followed over periods of up to 4 weeks showed chondrocyte proliferation from the tissue sources varied, as did levels of type II collagen and aggrecan gene expression. For both genes, highest expression was found for costal chondrocytes, followed by nasoseptal, articular, and auricular cells. Retrieval of 20-week discs from mice revealed changes in construct dimensions with different chondrocytes. Greatest disc diameter was found for scaffolds seeded with auricular chondrocytes, followed by those with costal, nasoseptal, and articular cells. Greatest disc thickness was measured for scaffolds containing costal chondrocytes, followed by those with nasoseptal, auricular, and articular cells. Retrieved copolymer alone was smallest in diameter and thickness. Only auricular scaffolds developed elastic fibers after 20 weeks of implantation. Type II collagen and aggrecan were detected with differing expression levels on quantitative RT-PCR of discs implanted for 20 weeks. These data demonstrate that bovine chondrocytes obtained from different cartilaginous sites in an animal may elicit distinct responses during their respective development of a tissue-engineered neocartilage. Thus, each chondrocyte type establishes or maintains its particular developmental characteristics, and this observation is critical in the design and elaboration of any tissue-engineered cartilage model.

Abstract:This study aimed to compare the histological, biochemical, and mechanical characteristics of hyaline cartilage in different regions and evaluate the potential of chondrocytes extracted from each region as donor sources for articular cartilage repair. The cartilage tissues of the femoral head and knee joint, ribs, nasal septum, thyroid, and xiphoid process of adult Bama pigs were isolated for histological, biochemical, and mechanical evaluation and analysis. The corresponding chondrocytes were isolated and evaluated for proliferation and redifferentiation capacity, using biochemical and histological analysis and RT-PCR experiments. Compared with articular cartilage, non-articular hyaline cartilage matrix stained more intensely in Safranin-O staining. Glycosaminoglycan and total collagen content were similar among all groups, while the highest content was measured in nasal septal cartilage. Regarding biomechanics, non-articular cartilage is similar to articular cartilage, but the elastic modulus and hardness are significantly higher in the middle region of costal cartilage. The chondrocytes extracted from different regions had no significant difference in morphology. Hyaline cartilage-like pellets were formed in each group after redifferentiation. The RT-PCR results revealed similar expressions of cartilage-related genes across the groups, albeit with lower expression of Col2 in the xiphoid chondrocytes. Conversely, higher expression of Col10 was observed in the chondrocytes from the rib, thyroid, and xiphoid cartilage. This study provides valuable preclinical data for evaluating heterotopic hyaline cartilage and chondrocytes for articular cartilage regeneration. The findings contribute to the selection of chondrocyte origins and advance the clinical translation of technology for cartilage regeneration.

Bioengineering Autologous Cartilage Grafts for Functional Posterior Lamellar Eyelid Reconstruction: A Preliminary Study in Rabbits

Abstract:The reconstruction of posterior lamellar eyelid defects remains a significant challenge in clinical practice due to anatomical complexity, specialized function, and aesthetic concerns. The ideal substitute for the posterior lamellar should replicate the native tarsoconjunctival tissue, providing both mechanical support for the eyelids and a smooth surface for the globe after implantation. In this study, we present an innovative approach utilizing tissue-engineered cartilage (TEC) grafts generated from rabbit auricular chondrocytes and a commercialized type I collagen sponge to reconstruct critical-sized posterior lamellar defects in rabbits. The TEC grafts demonstrated remarkable mechanical strength and maintained a stable cartilaginous phenotype both in vitro and at 6 months post-implantation in immunodeficient mice. When employed as autografts to reconstruct tarsal plate defects in rabbits' upper eyelids, these TEC grafts successfully restored normal eyelid morphology, facilitated smooth eyelid movement, and preserved the histological structure of the conjunctival epithelium. When applied in bilayered tarsoconjunctival defect reconstruction, these TEC grafts not only maintained the normal contour of the upper eyelid but also supported conjunctival epithelial cell migration and growth from the defect margin towards the centre. These findings highlight that auricular chondrocyte-based TEC grafts hold great promise as potential candidates for clinical posterior lamellar reconstruction. Statement of significance The complex structure and function of the posterior lamellar eyelid continue to be significant challenges for clinical reconstructive surgeries. In this study, we utilized autologous auricular chondrocyte-based TEC grafts for posterior lamellar eyelid reconstruction in a preclinical rabbit model. The TEC grafts exhibited native cartilaginous histomorphology and comparable mechanical strength to those of the native human tarsal plate. In rabbit models with either tarsal plate defects alone or bilayered tarsoconjunctival defects, TEC grafts successfully restored the normal eyelid contour and movement, as well as supported preservation and growth of conjunctival epithelium. This is the first study to demonstrate autologous TEC grafts can be employed for repairing tarsal plate defects, thereby offering an alternative therapeutic approach for treating posterior lamellar defects in clinic settings.

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the possibility of formation of subcutaneously implanted tissue-engineered cartilage using allograft chondrocytes mixed with xenogenic cartilage microparticle acellular matrix(CMACM) and fibrin glue(FG)as scaffold.Methods Chondrocytes were isolated from ears of adult New Zealand white rabbits.CMACM from porcine auricle was established and combined with FG and exoteric amplified chondrocytes.The compound was transplanted into the back of rabbits subcutaneously.The experiment was divided into three groups according to compound components。Group A,allograft chondrocytes mixed with CMACM and FG;Group B,autograft chondrocytes mixed with CMACM and FG;Group C with CMACM and FG.Five adult rabbits were used,and six regions were divided on the back of every rabbit.Each rabbit was injected compound of group A,B and C in two regions.Specimens were evaluated macroscopically,then harvested and detected histologically at 8 and 12 weeks after operation.Results In group A and C compounds could not form subcutaneous cartilage tissues.While cartilage tissues formed with group B mixtures at 8 weeks;At 12 weeks,new-formed cartilage tissues seemed even more stabilized without inflammatory around it.The size of new-formed cartilage was obviously shrinked with small vessels growing into it and the thickness of new-formed cartilages was only 1 mm.Conclusion The autogenic chondrocytes combining CMACM and FG matrix is a potential material to the cartilage tissue engineering.The volume and thickness of new-formed cartilage tissue is limited and micro-vessles growing into cartilage may contribute to longer survival for new tissues.
Comparison of allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells therapeutic potentials in rabbits' cartilage defects: Μacroscopic and histological outcomes

Abstract:Mesenchymal stem cells are safe and effective for treating joint injuries. However, the most suitable cell source remains controversial. This randomized controlled, double-blind study aimed to evaluate the potentials of rabbit allogeneic bone marrow- (BMSCs), adipose- (ASCs) and synovial membrane- (SDSCs) derived stem cells encapsulated in fibrin glue (FG) in vivo. The therapeutic properties of fibrin glue in critical-sized osteochondral defects (ODs) were also investigated. A 3 × 3 mm-sized OD was created in the femoral patellar groove on both knees of New Zealand rabbits, except from the left knees of the control group in which the OD was 2 × 3mm. The rabbits were randomly divided into four groups (right/left knee): 3 × 3 mm / 2 × 3 mm-sized OD control group, FG/FG with ASCs group, FG/FG with BMSCs group, FG/FG with SDSCs group. The International Cartilage Repair Society (ICRS) and the O'Driscoll scales were used to evaluate tissue characteristics after 12 weeks. FG promoted the production of reparative tissue with superior macroscopic features. Allogeneic MSCs combined with FG improved the macroscopic and histological scores more than the FG groups. The tissue in the SDSCs group was macroscopically and histologically better than the ASCs and BMSCs groups. The ICRS score differed among the SDSCs and the ASCs groups, while the empty critical-sized ODs were filled with inferior tissue compared to smaller ones. The preclinical feasibility of stem cells for OD regeneration in rabbits and the osteochondrogenic superiority of SDSCs was demonstrated. Additional tests and extended studies are required to reassure the long-term safety of these findings.
Comparing the effects of Bone+B® xenograft and InterOss® xenograft bone material on rabbit calvaria bone defect regeneration

Abstract:Background: The bone regeneration therapy is often used in patients with inadequate bone support for implants, particularly following tooth extractions. Xenografts derived from animal tissues are effective bone reconstructive options that resist resorption and pose a low risk of transmitting disease. Therefore, these implants may be a good option for enhancing and stabilizing maxillary sinuses. The purpose of this study was to compare two xenografts, Bone+B® and InterOss®, for the reconstruction of rabbit calvaria defects. Methods and materials: The study involved seven male New Zealand white rabbits. In the surgical procedure, 21 spots were created on both sides of the midline calvarium by creating three 8-millimeter defects. A control group was used, as well as two treatment groups utilizing Bone+B® Grafts and InterOss® Grafts. After 3 months, the rabbits were euthanized, followed by pathological evaluation. Analysis of these samples focused on bone formation, xenograft remaining material, and inflammation levels, using Adobe Photoshop CS 8.0 and SPSS version 24. Results: With the application of Bone+B® graft, bone formation ranged from 32% to 45%, with a mean of 37.80% (±5.63), and the remaining material ranged from 28% to 37%, with a mean of 32.60% (±3.65). Using InterOss® grafts, bone formation was 61% to 75%, the mean was 65.83% (±4.75), and the remaining material was 9% to 18%, with a mean of 13.17% (±3.06). The bone formation in the control group ranged from 10% to 25%, with a mean of 17.17% (±6.11). InterOss® had lower inflammation levels than other groups, but the difference was not statistically significant (p > .05). Conclusion: InterOss® bone powder is the best option for maxillofacial surgery and bone reconstruction. This is due to more bone formation, less remaining material, and a lower inflammation level. Compared to the control group, Bone+B® improves healing and bone quality, thus making it an alternative to InterOss®.

Abstract:Objective:To investigate the chondrogenic potential of the fibroblast in rabbit dermis. Methods:Twenty autogenous island flaps were transplanted onto the surface of femoral head in 20 adult rabbits respectively, where full-thickness cartilage defects had been created. Twenty autogenous free flaps served as controls on the contralateral femoral head in every animal. They were sacrificed postoperatively at the end of 8 and 16 weeks. Transplanted tissue were examined histologically and ultrastructurally. Results:We found that island flap and femoral head joined together, epidermis degenerated gradually, dermal collagen fiber proliferated. Plenty of chondroblast and fibroblast were found on the interface of flap and bone. Whereas free flaps slipped or degenerated. Conclusion:This results indicate that rabbit dermal fibroblast can transform into chondroblast in the articulation with cartilage defects.
