Abstract:Carbon-atom extrusion from the ipso-position of a halobenzene ring (C6H5X; X=F, Cl, Br, I) and its coupling with a methylene ligand to produce acetylene is not confined to [LaCH2](+); also, the third-row transition-metal complexes [MCH2](+), M=Hf, Ta, W, Re, and Os, bring about this unusual transformation. However, substrates with substituents X=CN, NO2, OCH3, and CF3 are either not reactive at all or give rise to different products when reacted with [LaCH2](+). In the thermal gas-phase processes of atomic Ln(+) with C7H7Cl substrates, only those lanthanides with a promotion energy small enough to attain a 4f(n)5d(1)6s(1) configuration are reactive and form both [LnCl](+) and [LnC(5)H(5)Cl](+). Branching ratios and the reaction efficiencies of the various processes seem to correlate with molecular properties, like the bond-dissociation energies of the C-X or M+-X bonds or the promotion energies of lanthanides.
Methane Activation by [lno] + : the 4 F Orbital Matters

Abstract:Gas-phase reactions of [LnO] + with methane have been studied by using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer (ICPMS) combined with quantum chemical calculations. Experiments indicate that the [LnO] + (Ln=Sm-Lu) ions are able to activate methane to generate methyl radicals. In particular, [EuO] + and [YbO] + exhibit the highest reactivity. Interestingly, ab initio computations reveal a novel HAT process operating in the absence of a terminal oxygen radical, as mediated by [EuO] + and [YbO] + . Such a process diverges from previous findings on the methane activation by metal oxide clusters, not only on the electronic pattern during the course of hydrogen transfer, but also on the important role that 4f electrons play. The associated electronic origins have been discussed, and the well-designed 4 f electron occupation may turn to be a promising approach in constructing lanthanide involved catalysts.

Abstract:Reactions of laser-ablated late lanthanide atoms (Th, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu) with dilute carbon monoxide molecules in solid argon have been investigated using matrix-isolation infrared spectroscopy. The Ln(2)[eta(2)(mu(2)-C, O)](x) (Ln = Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Lu; x = 1, 2) molecules are observed upon sample annealing, whereas no product is observed for Tm and Yb. The C-O stretching frequencies in these dilanthanide carbonyls range from 1100 to 1300 cm(-1), far below the value of free CO in the gas phase (2143.5 cm(-1)), implying that the C-O bonds are highly activated. Density functional theory calculations have been performed on these products. These Ln(2)[eta(2)(mu(2)-C, O)], molecules are predicted to have planar structures, which carry asymmetrically bridging CO moieties that are tilted to the side.

Abstract:The reactions of Group-3 metal atoms with carbon monoxide in solid argon have been studied using matrix isolation infrared absorption spectroscopy. The lanthanide monocarbonyls LnCO were produced spontaneously on annealing. The observations on LnCO, Ln Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Tb, Dy, Ho, and Er are new. We also theoretically study the structure, bonding, and C-O stretch infrared frequencies. The covalent M-C bonding contains both M <- C sigma donation from the carbon lone pair, and M 5d -> CO 2 pi* back donation contributions. In addition to the open 4f(n) shells, the total spin, as found earlier, may have contributions from an M 'sigma doughnut' and the M-C pi bond, in a sigma(1)pi(1), sigma(1)pi(2) high-spin, or sigma(2)pi(1) low-spin configuration. They form at least a single-bond, and those with the sigma(1)pi(2) configuration approach a double bond in length. The weakening of the C-O bonding is related to the back donation to the antibonding C-O 2 pi* orbital.

Abstract:The reactions of early lanthanide metal atoms (Ce, Pr, and Nd) with carbon monoxide and nitric oxide mixtures are studied by infrared absorption spectroscopy in solid argon. The reaction intermediates and products are identified via isotopic substitution as well as theoretical frequency calculations. The results show that the reactions proceed with the initial formation of inserted NLnO molecules, which subsequently react with CO to form the NLnO(CO) complexes on annealing. The NLnO(CO) complexes further isomerize to the more stable isocyanate OLnNCO species under UV light excitation.

Abstract:The reactions of alkaline-earth metal atoms (Ca, Sr, and Ba) with carbon dioxide are investigated using matrix isolation infrared spectroscopy in solid neon. The ground-state metal atoms react with two carbon dioxide molecules to produce the oxalate complexes MC2O4 and the carbonate-carbonyl complexes OCMCO3 (M = Ca, Sr, Ba) spontaneously on annealing. The species are identified by the effects of isotopic substitution on their infrared spectra as well as density functional calculations. Bonding analyses reveal that the attractive forces between M2+ and (CO3)2- or (C2O4)2- in the OCMCO3 and MC2O4 complexes come mainly from electrostatic attraction, but covalent orbital interactions also play an important role, which are dominated by the ligand-to-metal donation bonding. The calcium, strontium, and barium metal centers in these complexes use their ns and predominately (n - 1)d atomic orbitals for covalent bonding that mimic transition metals.
Molecular O 2 Activation over Cu(I)-Mediated C≡N Bond for Low-Temperature CO Oxidation.

Abstract:The activation of molecular oxygen (O) is extremely crucial in heterogeneous oxidations for various industrial applications. Here, a charge-transfer complex CuTCNQ nanowires array (CuTCNQ NWs) grown on the copper foam was first reported to show CO catalytic oxidation activity at temperature below 200°C with the activated O as an oxidant. The molecular O was energetically activated over the Cu (I) mediated C≡N bond with a lower energy of -1.167 eV, and preferentially reduced to •O through one-electron transfer during the activation process by density functional theory (DFT) calculations and Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). The theoretical calculations indicated that CO molecule was oxidized by the activated O on the CuTCNQ NWs surface via the Eley-Rideal (ER) mechanism, which had been further confirmed by in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectra (DRIFTS). These results indicated that the local C≡N bond electron state engineering could effectively improve the molecular O activation efficiency, which facilitate the low-temperature CO catalytic oxidation. The findings reported here enhance our understanding on molecular oxygen activation pathway over metal-organic nanocatalysts and provide a new avenue for rational design of novel low-cost, organic based heterogeneous catalysts.
Insights into the Metal–CO Bond in O 2 M(η 1 -CO) (M = Cr, Mo, W, Nd, and U) Complexes

Abstract:Investigations on the structures and bonding properties of metal carbonyl compounds provide fundamental understandings on the origin of small-molecule activations. Herein, the geometry and bonding trends of a series of isovalent metal oxocarbonyl complexes O2M(η1-CO) (M = Cr, Mo, W, Nd, and U) were studied by combined matrix-isolation infrared spectroscopy and advanced quantum chemical calculations. The title complexes present red shift of C-O stretching bands in the range from 122 to 244 cm-1, indicating the difference of CO activation ability for the series of isovalent metal dioxides. Density functional theory calculations predict T-shaped structures with a C2v symmetry for all the title molecules. O2Nd(η1-CO) bears little resemblance to the other complexes in bonding characters because of the weak interactions between the NdO2 and CO moiety. For the other complexes, natural localized molecular orbital analysis reveals a gradual increase of covalent character in M-CO bonds along the metal series Cr → Mo → W→ U. Energy decomposition analysis with natural orbitals for chemical valence calculations demonstrates that the M-CO bonding patterns conform to the conventional Dewar-Chatt-Duncanson motif. The contributions from orbital interactions in total attractions increase from Cr (41.7%) to U (52.7%). The breakdown of the orbital term into pairwise interactions shows that contributions of the M ← CO σ donation decrease from Cr (59.2%) to U (28.4%), while the M → CO π* backdonation increases significantly from Cr (23.8%) to U (67.3%). The more effective overlap and the better energy matching of U 5f and U 6d valence orbitals with CO π* orbitals result in much stronger U → CO π backdonation than the other metal elements.

Abstract:An important aspect of sustainable chemistry research is the discovery of novel chemical mechanisms by which otherwise inert molecules become activated toward useful transformations by earth’s most abundant elements. Compounds involving the most abundant metal on earth, aluminum, most commonly involve AlIII ions due to their noble gas electronic configurations. Although compounds with AlI ions have also been studied, the chemistry of AlII ions is nearly unknown and may contain undiscovered reaction manifolds. Here, we report the CO2 activation chemistry of an AlII complex supported by a chelating, dianionic ligand and investigate the electronic structure details and reaction mechanisms required to access this reactivity. We found that a heterobinuclear complex, (NON)Al- FeCp(CO)2 (1), undergoes reversible Al-Fe bond homolysis at ambient conditions to reveal the [(NON)Al]·/[CpFe(CO)2]· radical pair in situ. The presence of predominantly Al-centered spin density (i.e., an AlII ion) within this radical pair was established using experiments with radical scavengers as well as electronic structure calculations. Exposure of 1 to CO2 atmosphere resulted in insertion of CO2 into the Al-Fe bond. This net 2-electron CO2 reduction process was computationally modeled using quantum chemical calculations and direct dynamics simulations, revealing that reduction involves two 1-electron steps and, thus, depends on stabilization of high-energy [CO2]· - by coordination to aluminum. This mechanism for CO2 activation is unexpected given the canonical predisposition of CO2 for multi-electron reduction processes and demonstrates the possibility of discovering new reaction profiles of earth- abundant elements in unusual oxidation states.

Abstract:The recent focus on developing high-valent non-oxo-metal complexes for late transition metals has proven to be an effective strategy to study the rich chemistry of these high-valent species while bypassing the synthetic challenges of obtaining the oxo-metal counterparts. In our continuing work of exploring late transition metal complexes of unusually high oxidation states, we have obtained in the present study a formal mononuclear Ni(IV)-nitrate complex (2) upon 1-e- oxidation of its Ni(III) derivatives (1-OH and 1-NO3). Characterization of these Ni complexes by combined spectroscopic and computational approaches enables deep understanding of their geometric and electronic structures, bonding interactions, and spectroscopic properties, showing that all of them are square planar complexes and exhibit strong π-covalency with the amido N-donors of the N3 ligand. Furthermore, results obtained from X-ray absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations provide strong support for the assignment of the Ni(IV) oxidation state of complex 2, albeit with strong ligand-to-metal charge donation. Notably, 2 is able to oxidize hydrocarbons with C-H bond strength in the range of 76-92 kcal/mol, representing a rare example of high-valent late transition metal complexes capable of activating strong sp3 C-H bonds.

Carbon Dioxide Coordination and Activation by Niobium Oxide Molecules

Abstract:Carbon dioxide coordination and activation by niobium oxide molecules were studied by matrix isolation infrared spectroscopy. It was found that the niobium monoxide molecule reacted with carbon dioxide to form the niobium dioxide carbonyl complex NbO(2)(η(1)-CO) spontaneously on annealing in solid neon. The observation of the spontaneous reaction is consistent with theoretical predictions that this carbon dioxide activation process is both thermodynamically exothermic and kinetically facile. In contrast, four niobium dioxide-carbon dioxide complexes exhibiting three different coordination modes of CO(2) were formed from the reactions between niobium dioxide and carbon dioxide, which proceeded with the initial formation of the η(1)-O bound NbO(2)(η(1)-OCO) and NbO(2)(η(1)-OCO)(2) complexes on annealing. The NbO(2)(η(1)-OCO) complex rearranged to the η(2)-O,O bound NbO(2)(η(2)-O(2)C) isomer under visible light irradiation, while the NbO(2)(η(1)-OCO)(2) complex isomerized to the NbO(2)(η(1)-OCO)(η(2)-OC)O structure involving an η(2)-C,O ligand under IR excitation. In these niobium dioxide carbon dioxide complexes, the η(1)-O coordinated CO(2) ligand serves as an electron donor, whereas both the η(2)-C,O and η(2)-O,O coordinated CO(2) ligands act as electron acceptors.

Abstract:The lanthanide octacarbonyl anion complexes Ln(CO)8 - (Ln=Tm, Yb, Lu) were produced in the gas phase and detected by mass-selected infrared photodissociation spectroscopy in the carbonyl stretching-frequency region. By comparison of the experimental CO-stretching frequencies with calculated data, which are strongly red-shifted with respect to free CO, the Yb(CO)8 - and Lu(CO)8 - complexes were determined to possess octahedral (Oh ) symmetry and a doublet X2 A2u (Yb) and singlet X1 A1g (Lu) electronic ground state, whereas Tm(CO)8 - exhibits a D4h equilibrium geometry and a triplet X3 B1g ground state. The analysis of the electronic structures revealed that the metal-CO attractive forces come mainly from covalent orbital interactions, which are dominated by [Ln(d)]→(CO)8 π backdonation and [Ln(d)]←(CO)8 σ donation (contributes ≈77 and 16 % to covalent bonding, respectively). The metal f orbitals play a very minor role in the bonding. The electronic structure of all three lanthanide complexes obeys the 32-electron rule if only those electrons that occupy the valence orbitals of the metal are considered.

Abstract:Synthesis and reactivity with carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) of divalent samarium in the bis -tris(pyrazolyl)borate ligand environment has been reported. In addition, CO 2 activation and functionalisation by lanthanide silylamides in the bis -tris(pyrazolyl)borate ligand environment was demonstrated. Reduction of the Sm(III) precursor [Sm(Tp) 2 (OTf)] (Tp = hydrotris(1-pyrazolyl)borate; OTf = triflate) with KC 8 yielded the insoluble Sm(II) multi-metallic coordination polymer [{Sm(Tp) 2 } n ] 1-Sm . Addition of 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME) to 1-Sm enabled isolation of the monomeric complex [Sm(Tp) 2 (DME)] 1-Sm(DME) . Complex 1-Sm(DME) reduced CO 2 to yield the oxalate-bridged dimeric Sm(III) complex [{Sm(Tp) 2 } 2 ( μ - η 2 : η 2 -O 2 CCO 2 )] 2-Sm . The reactions of heteroleptic Ln(III) silylamide complexes [Ln(Tp) 2 (Nʹʹ)] (Ln = Y, Sm; Nʹʹ = N(SiMe 3 ) 2 ) with CO 2 yielded monomeric Ln(III) silyloxides [Ln(Tp) 2 (OSiMe 3 )] 3-Ln and trimethylsilyl isocyanate (O=C=NSiMe 3 ). Complexes 3-Ln are the first crystallographically characterised examples of Ln(III)–OSiMe 3 bonds accessed via CO 2 activation and functionalisation. Full characterisation data are presented for all complexes, including solid-state molecular structure determination by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

Abstract:A set of mononuclear cobalt(III) octahedral complexes {[Co(LH)(acac)] (Co-1H), [Co(LBr)(acac)] (Co-1Br), and [Co(LNO2)(acac)] (Co-1NO2)} has been synthesized using new generation N/O donors, maleonitrile tethered, tetradentate heteroscorpionate half-reduced Schiff base ligands, 2-((E)-2-hydroxybenzylideneamino)-3-(pyridin-2-ylmethylamino)maleonitrile (H2LH), 2-((E)-(5-bromo-2-hydroxybenzylidene)amino)-3-((pyridin-2 ylmethyl)amino)maleonitrile (H2LBr), and 2-((E)-2-hydroxy-5-nitrobenzylideneamino)-3-(pyridin-2-ylmethylamino)maleonitrile (H2LNO2). All the compounds were well characterized by spectroscopically and structurally. The non-covalent interactions present in the lattice of Co-complexes were studied in details to explain the molecular architecture using Hirshfeld Surface (HS) analysis. The catalytic activity of CO2 fixation towards epoxides under mild and solvent free condition were demonstrated.

Activation of Surface Oxygen Sites in a Cobalt-Based Perovskite Model Catalyst for CO Oxidation

Abstract:Anionic redox chemistry is becoming increasingly important in explaining the intristic catalytic behavior in transition-metal oxides and improving catalytic activity. However, it is a great challenge to activate lattice oxygen in noble-metal-free perovskites for obtaining active peroxide species. Here, we take La0.4Sr0.6CoO3-δ as a model catalyst and develop an anionic redox activity regulation method to activate lattice oxygen by tuning charge transfer between Co4+ and O2-. Advanced XAS and XPS demonstrate that our method can effectively decrease electron density of surface oxygen sites (O2-) to form more reactive oxygen species (O2- x), which reduces the activation energy barriers of molecular O2 and leads to a very high CO catalytic activity. The revealing of the activation mechanism for surface oxygen sites in perovskites in this work opens up a new avenue to design efficient solid catalysts. Furthermore, we also establish a correlation between anionic redox chemistry and CO catalytic activity.

Abstract:Surface lattice oxygen in metal oxides is a common participant in many chemical reactions. Given this, the structural design of catalysts to activate lattice oxygen and moreover investigations into the effect of lattice oxygen on reaction pathways are hot topics. With this in mind, herein we prepare CuO-Zn1-xCuxO (ZCO) nanofibers akin to the Trojan horse legend and via an in situ reduction obtain activated Cu/Zn1-xCuxO (Cu/ZCO) nanofibers. X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveal that surface lattice oxygen of Cu/ZCO is effectively activated from inert O2- to reactive O2-x. This activation stems from the enhanced covalence of metal-oxygen bonds and the electron transfer between Cu and the support. Online mass spectrometry reveals that Cu/ZCO with activated lattice oxygen exhibits a higher Mars-van Krevelen reaction efficiency during the CO oxidation process. This study offers a new avenue to engineer interface interactions, given, as highlighted here, the importance of surface lattice oxygen in oxide supports during the catalytic process.

Abstract:Reductive activation of carbon dioxide (CO2) has drawn increasing attention as an effective and convenient method to unlock this stable molecule, especially via transition metal-catalyzed reactions. Taking the [TaC4O8]+ ion-molecule complex formed in the laser ablation source as a representative, the reactivity of the tantalum metal cation towards CO2 molecules is explored using infrared photodissociation spectroscopy combined with quantum chemical calculations. The strong absorption in the carbonyl stretching region provides solid evidence for the insertion reactions into CO bonds by the tantalum cation. Two inserted oxocarbonyl products are identified based on the great agreement between the experimental results and simulated infrared spectra of energetically low-lying structures in the singlet and triplet states. The pivotal role of two-state reactivity in driving CO2 activation among three different spin states is rationalized by potential energy surface analysis. Our conclusion provides valuable insight into the intrinsic mechanisms of CO2 activation by the tantalum metal cation, highlighting the affinity of tantalum for CO bond insertion in addition to typical "end-on" binding configurations.
Dopant-Induced Modification of Active Site Structure and Surface Bonding Mode for High-Performance Nanocatalysts: Co Oxidation on Capping-Free (110)-Oriented Ceo2:Ln (ln = La-Lu) Nanowires

Abstract:Active center engineering at atomic level is a grand challenge for catalyst design and optimization in many industrial catalytic processes. Exploring new strategies to delicately tailor the structures of active centers and bonding modes of surface reactive intermediates for nanocatalysts is crucial to high-efficiency nanocatalysis that bridges heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysis. Here we demonstrate a robust approach to tune the CO oxidation activity over CeO2 nanowires (NWs) through the modulation of the local structure and surface state around Ln(Ce)' defect centers by doping other lanthanides (Ln), based on the continuous variation ;of the ionic radius of lanthanide dopants caused by the lanthanide contraction. Homogeneously doped (110)-oriented CeO2:Ln NWs with no residual capping agents were synthesized by controlling the redox chemistry of Ce(III)/Ce(IV) in a mild hydrothermal process. The CO oxidation reactivity over CeO2:Ln NWs was dependent on the Ln dopants, and the reactivity reached the maximum in turnover rates over Nd-doped samples. On the basis of the results obtained from combined experimentations and density functional theory simulations, the decisive factors of the modulation effect along the lanthanide dopant series were deduced as surface oxygen release capability and the bonding configuration of the surface adsorbed species (i.e., carbonates and bicarbonates) formed during catalytic process, which resulted in the existence of an optimal doping effect from the lanthanide with moderate ionic radius.

Abstract:[Cp(2)Ln(mu-OH)(THF)](2) react with 2 equiv of CyNCNCy (Cy - cyclohexyl) to form [Cp(2)Ln(mu-OC(NHCy)NCy)](2) (Ln = Er (1-Er), Y (1-Y)), while treatment of [Cp(2)Ln(mu-OH)](2)(mu(3)-O)LnCp(THF) with CyNCNCy affords the addition/rearrangement products [Cp(2)Ln(mu(3)-O)(mu-OC(NHCy)NCy)LnCp](2) (Ln = Yb (3-Yb), Er (3-Er)). Compounds [(Cp(2)Ln)(2)(mu(3)-CO3)(THF)](2) (Ln = Yb (4-Yb), Er (4-Er)) can be obtained by treatment of [Cp(2)Ln(mu-OH)(THF)](2) with CO2 immediately followed by the reaction with the corresponding Cp(3)Ln.
