Abstract:The challenging concern regarding how the benefits of inbound tourism can be evenly distributed, especially among urban and rural individuals, has received considerable attention in China. To address this concern, a spatial econometrics approach is used to estimate the spillover effects of inbound tourism on urban–rural income disparity (URID). An empirical analysis using the spatial Durbin model was conducted for 31 Chinese provinces covering the period from 2003 to 2017. Our findings suggest that at the national level, local inbound tourism significantly reduces the local URID, while neighboring inbound tourism significantly increases the local URID. At the regional level, the role of inbound tourism in reducing the local URID is only detected in the western region. The spillover effects of inbound tourism are positive and significant in the eastern/northeastern region but negative in the western region. In general, these findings provide insights into the importance of interregional tourism policies and strategies for inbound tourism development in China.

Abstract:In the current volatile international geopolitical landscape, fostering firm internationalization is crucial for enhancing economic cooperation and boosting economic growth among countries. This study aims to examine the impact of establishing sister cities, as a formal diplomatic institution between countries, on firms' outward foreign direct investment (OFDI). Using panel data of Chinese listed firms with high-dimensional fixed effect regression models, we find that sister cities can significantly increase firms' OFDI. Adopting a bilateral institutional perspective, we further investigate how institutions in both the home and host country influence this relationship. Our findings reveal that the positive effect of sister cities on firms' OFDI is stronger when marketization in home countries is less developed, while it is amplified in host countries with better governance quality. The heterogeneous analysis indicates that sister cities promote OFDI for private-owner enterprises (POEs) more than state-owner enterprises (SOEs); firms located in the middle and western regions are more incentivized by sister cities in promoting OFDI compared to those in the eastern regions; sister cities have a more pronounced impact on promoting OFDI for firms in the mining and construction industries. These findings offer valuable implications for firm internationalization strategies and policy makers in emerging markets.

Abstract:Promoted by both the "going out" policy and the "One Belt and One Road" (OBOR) Initiative, China's outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) has grown rapidly in the past two decades. A spatial network has gradually formed that facilitates global production, sales, and innovation. This paper studies the spatial correlation of China's OFDI network along the OBOR and its determinants. The block model analysis suggests that China's OFDI spatial network comprises four gradient sections. In addition, the analyses of quadratic assignment procedure and exponential random graph models demonstrate a tendency of agglomeration of China's OFDI, which may hinder the further development of its spatial correlation networks. Finally, we present some policy suggestions stemming from the study in the hope of helping both the government and firms to optimize their OFDI spatial layout strategy along the OBOR.

Abstract:Sister cities are a prevalent form of subnational intergovernmental relationships. Such relationships can play an important role in attracting foreign direct investment (FDI). However, we know little about whether and how these relationships influence the localized impacts of FDI in host countries, which is pivotal in achieving the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals. By integrating the literature on FDI spillover and sister cities, our study proposes that the higher the FDI percentage received by a city from its sister city, the greater the number of patents applied for by firms in that city. Our sample consists of 7273 inward FDI projects into China from 1558 cities in 77 countries between 2003 and 2008. The analysis results support our assumption. We also find that this positive effect is stronger when FDI projects are from recently established sister cities, when the asymmetry in the global economic networks of the two sister cities is smaller, and when regional marketization in host-country is higher.

Abstract:Extant research has explicitly recognized the importance of the compatible environment in the context of globalization. Sister-city partnership has long been developed for the establishment of such a favorable environment to facilitate international investment. Using a panel data set that covers 66 Belt Road countries and 75 non-Belt Road countries from 2006 to 2017, we investigate the impact of sister-city relationship between China and her partner countries as well as its interactive effect with Chinas' recent global home institution, BRI on the Chinese outward FDI. We find consistent evidence that both sister-city partnership and BRI promote the Chinese outward FDI while these effects are rather complementary than supplementary to each other. Further, we find that the positive impact of BRI seems to be more pronounced in privately owned enterprises (POE) rather than state-owned enterprises (SOE), which suggests that BRI at this stage is more market-oriented and less political-oriented. Our findings suggest that the policymakers should hold more open attitudes towards the establishment of sister-city partnership and towards the Belt Road Initiative to promote more Chinese outward foreign investment so as to deepen the bilateral economic cooperation.

Abstract:Foreign direct investment (FDI) has been pouring into China for decades. This article analyzes the spatial distribution and mechanism of FDI inflows to Chinese city-regions, combining location theories with the Chinese context. It provides a fresh perspective for understanding spatial FDI inflows in China. The spatial pattern of significant clustering features in FDI inflows remains, but it has shown a weakening trend over the past two decades. The Yangtze River Delta has grown as the largest agglomeration region of FDI in China. The great regional development in midwest China has brought large amounts of FDI to inland cities as well. These are atypical cases, though, as spatial dependence of FDI inflows based on geographic proximity is insignificant on a national scale. Local economic factors like energy supply, market consumption, and labor wages play roles in the spatial FDI inflows. This work can enrich the research practice and deepen the knowledge of spatial inequalities of FDI in the Chinese context.

Abstract:Using a spatial econometric model, this study investigates the impact of international friendship cities on urban exports in China at the city level. The results demonstrate a significant spatial spillover effect of international friendship cities on China's urban exports, benefiting not only the local area but also the neighbouring cities. Mechanism tests indicate that international friendship cities foster export growth in both local and adjacent cities by accumulating international social capital. Additionally, we identify a spatial spillover interval (within 700 km) and a siphonic interval (beyond 800 km) in the effect of international friendship cities on the urban exports of surrounding cities. This study sheds light on the role of international friendship cities in driving urban export growth in China.

Abstract:Two China-based geographers test the importance of market conditions and local institutions in determining the locational pattern of foreign direct investment in real estate development (FDIRE), a major component of China's urban growth since the 1980s. Using data from 35 major Chinese cities, they trace the diffusion of FDIRE from a concentration in China's major coastal cities in the late 1990s to a more dispersed pattern including large inland cities in 2008. In addition to investigating the general association between FDIRE, local market opportunities, and liberalized economies/more developed land markets, the authors assess differences in the locational behaviors of developers from Hong Kong-Taiwan-Macao and foreign countries. A concluding section explores the implications of FDIRE activity for the restructuring of China's urban system. China's Outward Fdi: a Study of Push and Pull Factors in Selected Asian Countries

Abstract:This study is an attempt to identify China’s outward FDI. The factors have been separated into push and pull factors. The pull factors are studied through panel OLS, while the co-integration method and ECM are used to identify the push factors. Internalization Theory is the main conceptual framework. This result shows Asian exports of fundamental products and GDP per person employed are positively associated the OFDI. However, regulatory quality is negative. For the push factors, China’s foreign reserves, exchange rate, patents and wage are found to positively impact outward FDI. Nonetheless, China’s export and saving rate are negatively associated with China’s OFDI. Then the ECM shows that China’s exchange rate has negatively associated with China’s OFDI at 15% significance. When Chinese’s policies supported its OFDI since 2000, its OFDI increased rapidly.

Abstract:Using spatial econometric techniques, this paper presents an empirical analysis of the growth performances of Chinese prefectures over 1991 to 2007 period. Based on the Solow growth theory with technology spillovers, a Spatial Durbin growth model recently developed is employed to capture the spatial externalities. We find strong evidence of positive spatial dependence between Chinese prefectures after 1991. Apart from the usual divergence conclusions, we find evidence for significant conditional convergence force when the spatial spillover effects are controlled. Our results also indicate the competition effect of capital accumulation and urbanization growth among neighboring regions. Moreover, spatial convergence clubs are detected and the spatial interactions and growth behavior varies. Published by Elsevier Inc.

Abstract:We examine how city size affect wage levels of cities (agglomeration externality) and how it influence surrounding cities (spill-over effect) in China for the period between 1995 and 2009. Using spatial fixed-effect panel data models and allowing for endogenous and exogenous spatial dependence, we find strong positive city size effect on real wage levels, which confirms the existence of agglomeration economy within cities. We also find significant differences in both the direct and indirect effect of factors such as FDI between more and less population dense areas.

Abstract:As a developing country and a transitional economy, the pattern of China's OFDI deviates from that of advanced economies and other emerging economies. The importance and uniqueness of China's OFDI is attracting lots of concerns. This research is to investigate the specific factors driving China's OFDI location choice. Based on the traditional MNC's location theory and‘relational turn'of economic geography, this paper gives a systematic description of China's OFDI. Firm-level data is used from 2002-2012 combined with investment data including flows and stocks during 2003-2011. From the perspective of relationship(guanxi) between China and its host countries, this paper tries to analyze location choice of China's OFDI. The result reveals two important outcomes. First, there is a diversification trend of China's OFDI including the aspects of spatial distribution, industry, investment mode and ownership. Second, the location choice of China's OFDI reveals a significant consistence with the political, social and economic relationship between China and its host countries.

Abstract:Differently from the prior studies that look at the determinants of Outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) location choice, based on the institution theory and employing a comprehensive and unique micro-level dataset of Chinese firms, this study is the first to integrate institutional linkages (Confucius Institute) and regional institutions into one framework and looks at the role of the location choices of Chinese OFDI. The results show that Chinese firms prefer to invest in countries with the presence and higher number of Confucius Institutes including Confucius classrooms. Moreover, the institutional linkage of Confucius Institutes can alleviate the possible negative effects caused by the distance between China and the host country, which suggests Confucius Institutes help Chinese firms against liabilities of foreignness and risks and costs of operation in more distant host countries. We also find that the availability and quality of China’s regional institutions have a strong impact on local firms’ willingness and capability of participating.
Dynamic relationship between China's inward and outward foreign direct investments

Abstract:This paper studies the dynamic relationship of China's inward and outward foreign direct investments (FDI). It first identifies the key determinants of China's outward FDI (OFDI) in 172 host countries during 2003–2009 using a partial stock adjustment model. It finds strong evidence of dynamic adjustment in China's OFDI stock with an agglomeration effect. The dynamic adjustment and agglomeration effects are stronger in “high-tech” countries than in “low-tech” ones but indifferent in host country's resource endowments and income levels. The empirical results suggest that there exists a substantial adjustment cost in China's OFDI and that China's existing OFDI stock can gradually adjust toward its long-term equilibrium level, which is not only greater but also more volatile than the actual stock. Of particular interest is that we find a strong and positive relationship between lagged inward FDI (IFDI) and contemporaneous OFDI, implying that capital outflow from China has been partially induced by the countries which have invested in China.
International Visibility As Determinants of Foreign Direct Investment: an Empirical Study of Chinese Provinces

Abstract:While previous studies use economic and institutional variables to explain transnational investment operations, we argue that regionally-specific international visibility can significantly influence the investment decisions of foreign firms with spatial and temporal dynamics. Empirically, we extract the usage frequency of the names of all of the Chinese provinces in millions of English-language books from Google Books N-gram corpus to construct the index of international visibility as a proxy measurement of international prominence. Results from dynamic panel data analysis (1994-2004) using the Generalized Method of Moments demonstrate that the level of international visibility of a province has a positive effect on the inflows of foreign direct investments, controlling for a set of economic and institutional factors. Further analyses show that this visibility effect varies with different state images of China formed in various historical periods and is stronger with regard to inland provinces compared to coastal provinces. Our results are robust across alternative corpora and different model specifications.
