Abstract:Nanocelluloses (NCs) isolated from lignocellulosic resources usually require harsh chemical pretreatments to remove lignin, which face constraints such as high energy consumption and inefficient resource utilization. An alternative strategy involving the partial retention of lignin can be adopted to endow NCs with better versatility and functionality. The resulting lignin-containing nanocelluloses (LNCs) generally possess better mechanical property, thermal stability, barrier property, antioxidant activity, and surface hydrophobicity than lignin-free NCs, which have attracted extensive interest as a promising green nanomaterial for numerous applications. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the recent advances in the preparation, properties, and food application of LNCs. The effect of residual lignin on the preparation and properties of LNCs is discussed. Furthermore, the key roles of lignin in the properties of LNCs, including particle size, crystalline structure, dispersibility, thermal, mechanical, antibacterial, rheological and adhesion properties, are summarized comprehensively. Furthermore, capitalizing on their dietary fiber and nanostructure properties, the food applications of LNCs in the forms of films, gels and emulsions are also discussed. Finally, the challenges and opportunities regarding the development of LNCs are provided.

Abstract:Lignin nanomaterials have emerged as a promising alternative to fossil-based chemicals and products for some potential added-value applications, which benefits from their structural diversity and biodegradability. This review elucidates a perspective in recent research on nanolignins and their nanocomposites. It summarizes the different nanolignin preparation methods, emphasizing anti-solvent precipitation, self-assembly and interfacial crosslinking. Also described are the preparation of various nanocomposites by the chemical modification of nanolignin and compounds with inorganic materials or polymers. Additionally, advances in numerous potential high-value applications, such as use in food packaging, biomedical, chemical engineering and biorefineries, are described.

Abstract:Lignin is the most abundant by-product from the pulp and paper industry as well as the second most abundant natural renewable biopolymer after cellulose on earth. In recent years, transforming unordered and complicated lignin into ordered and uniform nanoparticles has attracted wide attention due to their excellent properties such as controlled structures and sizes, better miscibility with polymers, and improved antioxidant activity. In this review, we first introduce five important technical lignin from different sources and then provide a comprehensive overview of the recent progress of preparation techniques which are involved in the fabrication of various lignin-based nanoparticles and their industrial applications in different fields such as drug delivery carriers, UV absorbents, hybrid nanocomposites, antioxidant agents, antibacterial agents, adsorbents for heavy metal ions and dyes, and anticorrosion nanofillers.

Abstract:This review paper provides a recent overview of current international research that is being conducted into the functional properties of cellulose as a nanomaterial. A particular emphasis is placed on fundamental and applied research that is being undertaken to generate applications, which are now becoming a real prospect given the developments in the field over the last 20 years. A short introduction covers the context of the work, and definitions of the different forms of cellulose nanomaterials (CNMs) that are most widely studied. We also address the terminology used for CNMs, suggesting a standard way to classify these materials. The reviews are separated out into theme areas, namely healthcare, water purification, biocomposites, and energy. Each section contains a short review of the field within the theme and summarizes recent work being undertaken by the groups represented. Topics that are covered include cellulose nanocrystals for directed growth of tissues, bacterial cellulose in healthcare, nanocellulose for drug delivery, nanocellulose for water purification, nanocellulose for thermoplastic composites, nanocellulose for structurally colored materials, transparent wood biocomposites, supercapacitors and batteries.

Abstract:Nanocellulose has a wide range of applications in the field of functional materials, and it has piqued the interest of researchers for some time. This is because nanocellulose inherits the advantages of environmental friendliness and easy availability of plant cell walls in nature, as well as the unique morphology of nanostructures. This review presents four types of nanocellulose including cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs), regenerated nanocellulose (RNC) and bacterial cellulose (BC), introduces the different preparation routes and their mechanisms, analyzes the advantages and drawbacks between these approaches, and summarizes the potential applications in the field of functional materials such as reinforced composite materials, biomedical materials, soft templates, and optical materials. Finally, future development directions are proposed including further enrichment of nanocellulose raw materials, improvement of preparation methods to adapt to more diversified raw materials, and classification of products according to their morphology and properties to improve the use efficiency.

Abstract:Cellulose is a kind of natural polymer material, which is composed of bundle-like fibrils. By peeling the fibrils layer by layer, the size of cellulose can be nanocrystallized, and nanofibers and nanocrystals with unique and potentially useful features can be prepared. As an emerging functional polymer material, nanocellulose has become a research hotspot in the field of technology. This review discusses the preparation of nanocellulose, including the commonly used hydrolysis, oxidation, physical and environmentally friendly ionic liquid methods. The advantages and disadvantages of different methods are also compared. And the review introduced the application of nanofiberized cellulose and nanocellulose crystals in the fields of thermosetting and thermoplastics, such as polylactic acid, polypropylene, epoxy resin and so on. The critical factors in the manufacturing of nanocellulose composites and mechanical properties are discussed to provide a reference for the further application and development of nanocellulose.

Abstract:Carbon nanofibers are a type of carbon material known for their high mechanical strength and multifunctionality, and they have promising applications in fields such as electronics, transportation, and aerospace. Currently, the majority of carbon nanofibers are produced using nonrenewable resources such as polyacrylonitrile, which makes them relatively expensive. However, lignin, as an inexpensive and renewable resource, is considered a potential alternative material for carbon nanofiber production. This article explores the classification, molecular structure, and extraction methods of lignin, summarizing the preparation methods for lignin-based carbon nanofibers, including spinning and chemical vapor deposition. Furthermore, we address challenges such as low density and poor orientation in lignin-based carbon nanofibers and provide an overview of reinforcement methods such as drawing, rolling, and particle doping to overcome these limitations. Additionally, we focus on their primary applications in devices like supercapacitors, sodium-ion batteries, and lithium-ion batteries. Finally, we also offer a glimpse into the prospective advancements in lignin-based carbon nanofiber development.

Abstract:Abstract Cellulose nanopaper has shown great potential in diverse fields including optoelectronic devices, food packaging, biomedical application, and so forth, owing to their various advantages such as good flexibility, tunable light transmittance, high thermal stability, low thermal expansion coefficient, and superior mechanical properties. Herein, recent progress on the fabrication and applications of cellulose nanopaper is summarized and discussed based on the analyses of the latest studies. We begin with a brief introduction of the three types of nanocellulose: cellulose nanocrystals, cellulose nanofibrils and bacterial cellulose, recapitulating their differences in preparation and properties. Then, the main preparation methods of cellulose nanopaper including filtration method and casting method as well as the newly developed technology are systematically elaborated and compared. Furthermore, the advanced applications of cellulose nanopaper including energy storage, electronic devices, water treatment, and high-performance packaging materials were highlighted. Finally, the prospects and ongoing challenges of cellulose nanopaper were summarized.

Abstract:Nanocellulose (NC) is a new biomass nanomaterial with at least one dimension in the nanoscale, prepared from plant fibers, animal, and bacteria. Nanocellulose combines important cellulose properties with the features of nanomaterials and open new horizons for materials science and its applications, such as biomaterials, optoelectronic devices, magnetic and etc. Owing to particular structures, superb properties and natural abundance, Nanocellulose has been diffusely researched as critical ingredient in the design of aerogels, sensors, pharmaceuticals, chiral materials and catalysts. This review focuses on the preparation and applications of nanocellulose-based fluorescent materials. The first part begins with a brief introduction of the nanocellulose. Subsequently, the autofluorescence behavior of nanocellulose is thoroughly discussed. And a variety of methods that have been used to fabricate nanocellulose-based fluorescent materials are proposed. Then, the applications of nanocellulose-based fluorescent materials are introduced in the fields of biomedicine, environmental monitoring, anticounterfeiting, explosives, drug trace detection, and etc. Finally, the future development opportunities and challenges of nanocellulose-based fluorescent materials are prospected.

Abstract:In recent years, nanocellulose (NC) has gained significant attention due to its remarkable properties, such as adjustable surface chemistry, extraordinary biological properties, low toxicity and low density. This review summarizes the preparation of NC derived from lignocellulosic biomass (LCB), including cellulose nanofibrils (CNF), cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), and lignin-containing cellulose nanofibrils (LCNF). It focuses on examining the impact of non-cellulosic components such as lignin and hemicellulose on the functionality of NC. Additionally, various surface modification strategies of NC were discussed, including esterification, etherification and silylation. The review also emphasizes the progress of NC application in areas such as Pickering emulsions, food packaging materials, food additives, and hydrogels. Finally, the prospects for producing NC from LCB and its application in food-related fields are examined. This work aims to demonstrate the effective benefits of preparing NC from lignocellulosic biomass and its potential application in the food industry.

Abstract:Biorenewable polymers have emerged as an attractive alternative to conventional metallic and organic materials for a variety of different applications. This is mainly because of their biocompatibility, biodegradability and low cost of production. Lignocellulosic biomass is the most promising renewable carbon-containing source on Earth. Depending on the origin and species of the biomass, lignin consists of 20–35% of the lignocellulosic biomass. After it has been extracted, lignin can be modified through diverse chemical reactions. There are different categories of chemical modifications, such as lignin depolymerization or fragmentation, modification by synthesizing new chemically active sites, chemical modification of the hydroxyl groups, and the production of lignin graft copolymers. Lignin can be used for different industrial and biomedical applications, including biofuels, chemicals and polymers, and the development of nanomaterials for drug delivery but these uses depend on the source, chemical modifications and physicochemical properties. We provide an overview on the composition and properties, extraction methods and chemical modifications of lignin in this review. Furthermore, we describe different preparation methods for lignin-based nanomaterials with antioxidant UV-absorbing and antimicrobial properties that can be used as reinforcing agents in nanocomposites, in drug delivery and gene delivery vehicles for biomedical applications.

The cellulose in the lignocellulosic biomass can depolymerize into a nano-dimension biomaterial called nanocellulose, which possesses unique features with potential application in various fields. Nanocellulose production from lignocellulosic biomass has become the subject of extensive research in the last few decades in the fields of material sciences and biomedical engineering and has attracted the attention of scientists and technologists worldwide. This production faces many challenges in utilizing the cellulose from lignocellulosic biomasses and subsequent processing for their conversion into nanocellulosic materials and their further applications in various fields of science and technology. This current review not only focuses on the production of nanocellulose from lignocellulosic biomass through different production methods but also discusses various sources, types, properties, and their applications in material science and biomedical engineering. This research review certainly shows that in the future, nanocellulose has great potential to be used as a renewable source in the field of sustainable materials and nanocomposites.

Abstract:With nano-dimension, high aspect ratio, and high mechanical properties, cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) are emerging sustainable nanomaterials with potential applications in films and composites. However, their preparation often involves a series of chemical treatments such as delignification, bleaching and harsh chemical pretreatments, and treats lignin as waste. Herein, we report a sustainable method to prepare high-quality lignin-containing cellulose nanofibrils (LCNFs) from bamboo chips, using a one-step maleic anhydride esterification treatment without any toxic organic solvent or catalyst. The resultant LCNFs have high lignin content (24%), high surface charge (2.25 mmol/g), fine diameter (∼2.5 nm), and high aspect ratio (>400). These superior properties can be translated into the corresponding nanopaper films with high optical transmittance (85% at 600 nm), UV shielding (<10% transmittance at 200–350 nm), hydrophobicity (water contact angle 75°), thermal stability (maximal weight loss temperature at 338 °C), and mechanical properties. Importantly, such films show the best reported tensile strength (290 MPa) among all the LCNF films, and it still outperforms conventional CNF films after 5 rounds of recycling. Furthermore, as sustainable nanofillers, such LCNFs can be directly incorporated into a hydrophobic polyester matrix, and significantly enhances the UV shielding and mechanical properties of the final nanocomposites. Altogether, with eco-friendly production and multiple functions, these LCNFs are a new class of nanocelluloses with high industrial relevance.

Abstract:Cellulose widely existed in plants and bacteria, which takes important effect on the synthesis of macromolecule polymer material. Because of its great material properties, the cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) showed its necessary prospect in various industrial applications. As a renewable future material, the preparation methods of the CNC were reviewed in this paper. Meanwhile, the important applications of CNC in the field of composites, barrier film, electronics, and energy consumption were also mentioned with brief introductions. Abstract:Background: Lignin has attracted a lot of attention because it is non-toxic, renewable and biodegradable. Lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) have high specific surface area and specific surface charges. It provides LNPs with good antibacterial and antioxidant properties. LNPs preparation has become clear, however, the application remains in the early stages. Purpose: A review centric research has been conducted, reviewing existing literature to accomplish a basic understanding of the medical applications of LNPs. Methods: Initially, we extensively counseled the heterogeneity of lignin from various sources. The size and morphology of LNPs from different preparation process were then discussed. Subsequently, we focused on the potential medical applications of LNPs, including drug delivery, wound healing, tissue engineering, and antibacterial agents. Lastly, we explained the significance of LNPs in terms of antibacterial, antioxidant and biocompatibility, especially highlighting the need for an integrated framework to understand a diverse range of medical applications of LNPs. Results: We outlined the chemical structure of different type of lignin, and highlighted the advanced methods for lignin nanoparticles preparation. Moreover, we provided an in-depth review of the potential applications of lignin nanoparticles in various medical fields, especially in drug carriers, wound dressings, tissue engineering components, and antimicrobial agents. Conclusion: This review provides a detailed overview on the current state and progression of lignin nanoparticles for medical applications.
In Situ Lignin Modification Enabling Enhanced Interfibrillar Interactions in Lignocellulosic Nanomaterials Toward Structural Applications

Abstract:Lignocellulose nanopaper (LNP) assembled from lignocellulose nanofibrils (LCNFs) is an emerging eco-friendly structural material applicable to a variety of fields. Lignin serves as a crucial functional component in the LNP matrix; however, it negatively affects the interfacial hydrogen-bonding behaviors among LCNFs and consequently the inferior mechanical performance of LNP. In this study, a mild ozone-oxidation strategy was used to modify lignin macromolecules in situ without significant degradation of carbohydrate polymers (i.e., cellulose and hemicellulose) in LCNFs whereupon the interfacial hydrogen-bond energy was dramatically improved in the assembly and deformation process of LNP as validated by molecular dynamics simulation. Consequently, the lignin-modified LNP exhibited significantly enhanced tensile strength (from 83 to 140 MPa) and toughness (from 1.9 to 7.1 J/m3), which even surpassed those of conventional cellulose nanopaper. Benefiting from the well-preserved lignocellulosic structure, lignin-modified LNP maintained its inherent favorable water and thermal stability and intriguing optical performance, which supported our developed LNP to be a multifunctional structural material for diversified fields, for example, flexible electronic applications. Additionally, the estimated production cost for our developed LNP was approximately half of that for conventional cellulose nanopaper due to its significantly lower resource inputs such as the material, water, and energy. Overall, our study provides a site-specific macromolecular modulation strategy for the economically and environmentally feasible fabrication of high-performance lignocellulosic nanomaterials toward advanced structural applications.

Abstract:Cellulose is the most abundant renewable polymer resource in nature and cellulose-based materials are expected to serve as viable replacements to petroleum-based plastic products. However, the poor wet strength of cellulose limits its application as a high-strength material. Lignin is another abundant natural polymer in the biosphere. Inspired by the natural structure of wood fibers, researchers have added lignin to cellulose-based materials to effectively improve the wet strength while maintaining the environmentally friendly nature of these materials. This review comprehensively summarizes the current studies and describes the mechanisms underlying lignin-induced enhancement in the wet strength of wood fibers and cellulose-based materials. In addition, the influence of various methods for preparing cellulose-based materials is analyzed based on the introduction of ionic or chemical crosslinking or the thermal curing of lignin/cellulose-based materials to improve their wet strength. The use of environmentally friendly methods to improve the wet strength of cellulose-based materials is key in advancing the applications of these two abundant biomass resources. Finally, the future prospects of cellulose-based materials with lignin-enhanced wet strengths are discussed. This review contributes to the understanding of the physicochemical changes of lignin in cellulose-based materials and provides theoretical support for the wet strength of lignin-enhanced cellulose-based materials.

Abstract:Among the most abundant biopolymers in the biosphere, lignin is a renewable aromatic compound that represents an untapped opportunity to create new biological products. However, the complex interlacing structures of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin, as well as the unique properties of lignin, limit the utilization of value-added lignin. Lignin-based nanomaterials open the door for lignin applications in environmental pollutant remediation, biofuel production, biomedicine, and other fields. Herein, we present various factors influencing the formation of micro-nanospheres by self-assembly techniques through a review of previous literature, and emphasize the simple and green synthesis of lignin micro/nanospheres (LMNPs) under non-modified conditions. More importantly, we discuss the mechanism of the formation of nanospheres. Considering the heterogeneity of lignin and the polarity of different solvents, we propose that self-assembly techniques should focus more on the influence brought by lignin itself or the solvent, so that the external conditions can be controlled to prepare LMNPs, which can be used in specific fields. A brief overview of the contribution of lignin-based nanomaterials in various fields is also presented. This review could provide insight for the development of lignin-based nanomaterials.

Abstract:In pursuit of low-carbon development, the production of diverse functional materials from renewable resources, especially lignocellulosic biomass, is of vital importance. Lignin is a major component of lignocellulose, and it is nature's only true high-volume aromatic polymer, which has the advantages of biodegradability, biocompati-bility, and low acquisition cost. After modification by a variety of physicochemical strategies, it can be applied as an alternative to basic industrial materials, including polyurethanes, phenolic, and epoxy resins, which stands comparably to conventional synthetic polymers in terms of both performance and reduced cost. To further un-lock the potential of lignin, an alluring opportunity is the exploitation of lignin for high-value materials, espe-cially nanomaterials, that find extensive applications in energy and environment areas. This review provides a systematic summary and perspective of research that has been devoted to lignin transformation to high-value materials, ranging from industrially well-established engineering materials to the recently emerged nano -materials that were used for energy and environment applications. Latest cutting-edge innovations on lignin modification, controlled depolymerization, and assembly during the last five years are summarized. Structure -function relationships of lignin materials in terms of their specific applications are analyzed. Furthermore, challenges and future opportunities for lignin conversion to high-value materials are also provided. We wish this review will stimulate further advances in lignin based high-value materials, and promote "waste" into "wealth".
