Abstract:The classical thermodynamics reflects the significant relationship between the heat and the temperature. On the basis of the relationships, according to the mathematical derivation, this paper structures the conceptions of generalized heat, generalized thermodynamic temperature, generalized entropy and so on. The series of conceptions in the classical thermodynamics is merely a special case of the generalized thermodynamics. Based on these conceptions of generalized thermodynamics, this paper presents the new expressions of the first law and the second law of thermodynamics. In other words, these expressions are endued with new explanations. The Eq. LZ = kTS given by this paper provides theoretical basis for these new expressions.

Abstract:<p>Thermodynamics is a science concerning the state of a system, whether it is stable, metastable or unstable, when interacting with the surroundings. In this overview, fundamentals of thermodynamics are briefly reviewed through the integration of first and second laws of thermodynamics for open and nonequilibrium systems to demonstrate that the reversible equilibrium and irreversible nonequilibrium thermodynamics can be integrated to enhance the power and utilities of thermodynamics. The recent progresses in computational thermodynamics, the remaining challenges, and potential impacts in broad scientific fields are discussed. It is shown that computational thermodynamics enables the modeling of thermodynamics of a state as a function of both external and internal variables and enables quantitative calculations of a broad range of properties of a multicomponent system in terms of first and second derivatives of energy, including not only equilibrium states when there are no driving forces for any internal processes and but also non-equilibrium states with driving forces for internal processes. Consequently, external constraints such as fixed strain and internal degree of freedoms such as ordering and defects can be described in a coherent framework and applied to materials design. Furthermore, two important but largely overlooked aspects in thermodynamics will be discussed, i.e. the rigorous application of statistical thermodynamics with the probability of configurations and their contributions to system properties, and the applications of second derivatives of energy with respect to either two extensive variables or two potentials or a mixture of them in terms of understanding and predicting emergent behaviors, critical phenomena, kinetic coefficients, and mechanical properties.</p>

Abstract:Abstract We discuss common student difficulties with the first and second laws of thermodynamics found using a validated conceptual multiple-choice survey called the survey of thermodynamic processes and first and second laws suitable for introductory physics courses. The analysis of data from more than a thousand students using the validated survey at six different colleges in the US shows that not only introductory but also advanced physics students have many common difficulties with these concepts after traditional lecture-based instruction in relevant concepts. The findings of the common student difficulties with the first and second laws of thermodynamics discussed here can be useful for developing effective curricula and pedagogies in order to reduce student difficulties.

Abstract:Does thermodynamics still hold true for mecroscopic small systems with only limited degrees of freedom? Do concepts such as temperature, entropy, work done, heat transfer, isothermal processes, and the Carnot cycle remain valid? Does the thermodynamic theory for small systems need modifying or supplementing compared with traditional thermodynamics applicable to macroscopic systems? Taking a single-particle system for example, we investigate the applicability of thermodynamic concepts and laws in small systems. We have found that thermodynamic laws still hold true in small systems at an ensemble-averaged level. After considering the information erasure of the Maxwell’s demon, the second law of thermodynamics is not violated. Additionally, ‘small systems’ bring some new features. Fluctuations in thermodynamic quantities become prominent. In any process far from equilibrium, the distribution functions of thermodynamic quantities satisfy certain rigorously established identities. These identities are known as fluctuation theorems. The second law of thermodynamics can be derived from them. Therefore, fluctuation theorems can be considered an upgradation to the second law of thermodynamics. They enable physicists to obtain equilibrium properties (e.g. free energy difference) by measuring physical quantities associated with non-equilibrium processes (e.g. work distributions). Furthermore, despite some distinct quantum features, the performance of quantum heat engine does not outperform that of classical heat engine. The introduction of motion equations into small system makes the relationship between thermodynamics and mechanics closer than before. Physicists can study energy dissipation in non-equilibrium process and optimize the power and efficiency of heat engine from the first principle. These findings enrich the content of thermodynamic theory and provide new ideas for establishing a general framework for non-equilibrium thermodynamics.
Generalized thermodynamics of an autonomous micro-engine

Abstract:We analyze an autonomous micro-engine as a closed quantum mechanical system, including the work it performs and the fuel it consumes. Our model system shows by example that it is possible to transfer energy steadily and spontaneously between fast and slow degrees of freedom, in analogy to the way combustion engines convert chemical energy into work. Having shown this possibility, we observe close analogies between the closed-system quantum dynamics of our micro-engine and the First and Second Law of Thermodynamics. From these analogies we deduce a generalized formulation of thermodynamics that remains valid on the micro-scale.

Abstract:At its origins, thermodynamics was the study of heat and engines. Carnot transformed it into a scientific discipline by explaining engine power in terms of transfer of “caloric”. That idea became the second law of thermodynamics when Thomson and Clausius reconciled Carnot’s theory with Joule’s conflicting thesis that power was derived from the consumption of heat, which was determined to be a form of energy. Eventually, Clausius formulated the 2nd-law as the universal entropy growth principle: the synthesis of transfer vs. consumption led to what became known as the mechanical theory of heat (MTH). However, by making universal-interconvertibility the cornerstone of MTH their synthesis-project was a defective one, which precluded MTH from developing the full expression of the second law. This paper reiterates that universal-interconvertibility is demonstrably false—as the case has been made by many others—by clarifying the true meaning of the mechanical equivalent of heat. And, presents a two-part formulation of the second law: universal entropy growth principle as well as a new principle that no change in Nature happens without entropy growth potential. With the new principle as its cornerstone replacing universal-interconvertibility, thermodynamics transcends the defective MTH and becomes a coherent conceptual system.

Abstract:Master equation could be applied to model various kinds of biochemical systems. A general theory for its time-dependent nonequilibrium thermodynamics is rigorously derived. We not only introduce a concept of general internal energy, but also propose an extension of the equilibrium state. Moreover, we find out an explicit expression for the extended form of the Second Law, which is phenomenologically stated as "the conversion of work to excess heat is irreversible". The theory is carefully applied to several thermodynamic processes, and its consistence with the classical thermodynamics is clearly shown.

Abstract:We analyze a category of problems that is of interest in many physical situations, including those encountered in introductory physics classes: systems with two well-delineated parts that exchange energy, eventually reaching a shared equilibrium with a loss of mechanical or electrical energy. Such systems can be constrained by a constant of the system (e.g., mass, charge, momentum, or angular momentum) that uniquely determines the mechanical or electrical energy of the equilibrium state, regardless of the dissipation mechanism. A representative example would be a perfectly inelastic collision between two objects in one dimension, for which momentum conservation requires that some of the initial kinetic energy is dissipated by conversion to thermal or other forms as the two objects reach a common final velocity. We discuss how this feature manifests in a suite of four well-known and disparate problems that all share a common mathematical formalism. These examples, in which the energy dissipated during the process can be difficult to solve directly from dissipation rates, can be approached by students in a first-year physics class by considering conservation laws and can therefore be useful for teaching about energy transformations and conserved quantities. We then illustrate how to extend this method by applying it to a final example.

Abstract:The first law of thermodynamics for a system undergoing a cyclic process states that the net heat and net work interactions are equal. Since the energy is transferred to an ordered mode of energy of the system, it can be converted entirely into work, which is also an ordered form of energy. Irrespective of the process used to convert the heat to work, the resultant change in the thermodynamic state of the system demands a certain amount of work to be transferred to the system to return it to its initial state. Consequently, energy supplied in the form of heat cannot be entirely converted into work. It is important to note that the emphasis is on engines that accomplish the conversion continuously by means of a cyclic process. The forms of first law relate the work interaction and heat interaction to the changes in the internal energy or enthalpy of the working substance.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is two-fold. First, to make clear (and de-mystify) the basic concepts of classical thermodynamics, and thus to enable the integration of thermodynamics within systems modeling and control. Second, to demonstrate that systems and control theory provides a natural context for the formulation and understanding of classical thermodynamics. This is not so surprising since classical thermodynamics, firmly rooted in engineering with questions such as the maximal efficiency of steam engines, deals from the very start with systems in interaction with their surrounding (by heat flow, mechanical work, flow of matter, etc.). In particular, it will be shown that dissipativity theory is key in the formulation and interpretation of the First and Second Law of thermodynamics. Also a geometric view on the state properties and the dynamics of thermodynamic systems will be emphasized, thereby unifying and simplifying different representations of thermodynamic systems. On the other hand, I will also argue that thermodynamics motivates paradigm shifts within systems and control; in particular, the use of non-minimal state space formulations, and a geometric view on them. Furthermore, while systems and control theory has been primarily based on linear systems with quadratic cost criteria, in line with basic system models in electrical and mechanical engineering (RLC-circuits, mass-spring-damper systems, etc.), thermodynamics necessitates to go beyond this linear-quadratic paradigm.

Abstract:We report on several specific student difficulties regarding the Second Law of Thermodynamics in the context of heat engines within upper-division undergraduates thermal physics courses. Data come from ungraded written surveys, graded homework assignments, and videotaped classroom observations of tutorial activities. Written data show that students in these courses do not clearly articulate the connection between the Carnot cycle and the Second Law after lecture instruction. This result is consistent both within and across student populations. Observation data provide evidence for myriad difficulties related to entropy and heat engines, including students' struggles in reasoning about situations that are physically impossible and failures to differentiate between differential and net changes of state properties of a system. Results herein may be seen as the application of previously documented difficulties in the context of heat engines, but others are novel and emphasize the subtle and complex nature of cyclic processes and heat engines, which are central to the teaching and learning of thermodynamics and its applications. Moreover, the sophistication of these difficulties is indicative of the more advanced thinking required of students at the upper division, whose developing knowledge and understanding give rise to questions and struggles that are inaccessible to novices.

Abstract:Classical and quantum mechanics laws are rebuilt in the frame of new thermodynamics. Heat is the sum of kinetic energy, system work, and system potential of a system, while force is the heat gradients over distance. Hence, collision, temperature difference, and molar volume gradients are the sources of forces. The collision creates symmetric forces, i.e., mutual repulsion or attraction. The other sources produce asymmetric forces driving rotation and spin (self-rotation). Interaction does not need a medium. As achievements, 1) a brief and general equation is derived to predict the equilibrium distance of molecular interaction: [equation] without using any assumption; 2) electrons and protons are electroneutral, while neutrons are the cold protons with delta T = 6.01 x 10 power 9 K, thus, the heat of nuclear reaction is about 9.18 MeV; 3) atom has isothermal and non-isothermal orbits. Each orbit accommodates 2 electrons with opposite spins; 4) the first ionization energies of elements reported in the references are close to the kinetic energies calculated in this paper; 5) the strengths of chemical bonds and H-bonds are calculated, comparable with the experimental data; 6) vibrations of chemical bonds are discussed which disclose the source of alpha in the system potential. It is suggested that transferring heat from the hot electrons and nuclei to the cold ones makes a network in the cosmos. Photons are the messengers on the way rather than the roaming travelers.
