Abstract:In the northeast of the Siberian Platform (Republic of Sakha (Yakutia)), there is the Udzha province of alkaline ultrabasic massifs with carbonatites of the final phases of the evolution of the magmatic system, forming its central “carbonatite core” and containing increased concentrations of Fe, Al, P, and a complex of rare and rare-earth elements. The massifs have a lateritic weathering crust with a thickness of up to 400 m. In the weathering crust of carbonatites, the contents of phosphates, Nb, Y, Sc, and TR are significantly higher compared to unaltered rock varieties. However, they reach maximal values in the thickness of peculiar sedimentary deposits formed as a result of the deposition of products denudation of the crust of ore-bearing carbonatites in small lake depressions and their intensive chemogenic transformation in a hot humid climate. They are uniquely rich ores, which in terms of the set and content of useful components have no analogues in world practice. These rocks are sometimes their natural concentrates with average contents of Nb2O5 7.21%, Y2O3 0.578%, Sc2O3 0.045%, and TR2O3 10.16%. The rocks that make up the ore-bearing stratum have characteristic features of sedimentary genesis: well-defined layered texture and facies zoning, as well as the presence of carbonized plant detritus and bacteriomorphic aggregates. This gives grounds to consider the complex of these formations as an independent stratigraphic unit—the Tomtor strata. Geological data suggest that it was formed in the range of 340–280 My. The Tomtor strata can serve as an important search criterion when searching for rare and rare-earth elements.

Abstract:The complex niobium–rare earth pyrochlore–monazite–crandallite ores of the Tomtor deposit, located in the Siberian Arctic, should be considered as a new type of rare metal materials. The major valuable components of the ore are niobium (1.63–16.4%), rare earth elements (2.2–27.8%), yttrium (0.18–2.9%), and scandium (0.015–0.15%); associated components are titanium, vanadium, aluminum, and phosphorus. Because of the irregular distribution of the rare earth metals and niobium according to grain size, the extremely finely dispersed nature of the minerals and their close interpenetration to each other, ore processing by gravitation and flotation is not successful. The processes studied for the treatment of the Tomtor ores use direct alkaline-acid leaching to open the ore. A problem in the first stage of alkaline leaching is the high aluminum content, which decreases the activity of sodium hydroxide and alkaline-earth metals, which are bound to phosphorus. Ore processing using alkaline-nitrate and alkaline-chloride leaching was proposed and investigated. The first variant was used to obtain rare earth and scandium materials and a niobium–titanium concentrate, which can be a stock material for processors who use chlorination for the processing of ores and concentrates. The second variant is a complex advanced ore processing scheme with electrochemical regeneration of the waste chloride solutions obtaining sodium hydroxide, hydrochloric acid, and chloridizing agents. Moreover trisodium phosphate is used for purification of the waste mother liquors from metal cations. The complex salt, NaAlCl4, is proposed as the chloridizing agent for the decomposition of the niobium–titanium concentrate. The recovery of rare earth metals in the second variant of processing is about 95%; while for niobium and titanium, this value is 92–94%.

Abstract:Cobalt-rich ferromanganese is an important seafloor mineral and is abundantly present in the seamount crusts. Such crusts form potential hotspots for biogeochemical activity and microbial diversity, yet our understanding of their microbial communities is lacking. In this study, a cultivation-independent approach was used to recover genomic information and derive ecological functions of the microbes in a sediment sample collected from the cobalt-rich ferromanganese crust of a seamount region in the central Pacific. A total of 78 distinct clones were obtained by fosmid library screening with a 16S rRNA based PCR method. Proteobacteria and MGI Thaumarchaeota dominated the bacterial and archaeal 16S rRNA gene sequence results in the microbial community. Nine fosmid clones were sequenced and annotated. Numerous genes encoding proteins involved in metabolic functions and heavy metal resistance were identified, suggesting alternative metabolic pathways and stress responses that are essential for microbial survival in the cobalt-rich ferromanganese crust. In addition, genes that participate in the synthesis of organic acids and exoploymers were discovered. Reconstruction of the metabolic pathways revealed that the nitrogen cycle is an important biogeochemical process in the cobalt-rich ferromanganese crust. In addition, horizontal gene transfer (HGT) events have been observed, and most of them came from bacteria, with some occurring in archaea and plants. Clone W4-93a, belonging to MGI Thaumarchaeota, contained a region of gene synteny. Comparative analyses suggested that a high frequency of HGT events as well as genomic divergence play important roles in the microbial adaption to the deep-sea environment.
A comparison of microbial communities in deep-sea polymetallic nodules and the surrounding sediments in the Pacific Ocean

Abstract:Deep-sea polymetallic nodules, rich in metals such as Fe, Mn, and Ni, are potential resources for future exploitation. Early culturing and microscopy studies suggest that polymetallic nodules are at least partially biogenic. To understand the microbial communities in this environment, we compared microbial community composition and diversity inside nodules and in the surrounding sediments. Three sampling sites in the Pacific Ocean containing polymetallic nodules were used for culture-independent investigations of microbial diversity. A total of 1013 near full-length bacterial 16S rRNA gene sequences and 640 archaeal 16S rRNA gene sequences with ~650bp from nodules and the surrounding sediments were analyzed. Bacteria showed higher diversity than archaea. Interestingly, sediments contained more diverse bacterial communities than nodules, while the opposite was detected for archaea. Bacterial communities tend to be mostly unique to sediments or nodules, with only 13.3% of sequences shared. The most abundant bacterial groups detected only in nodules were Pseudoalteromonas and Alteromonas, which were predicted to play a role in building matrix outside cells to induce or control mineralization. However, archaeal communities were mostly shared between sediments and nodules, including the most abundant OTU containing 290 sequences from marine group I Thaumarchaeota. PcoA analysis indicated that microhabitat (i.e., nodule or sediment) seemed to be a major factor influencing microbial community composition, rather than sampling locations or distances between locations.

Abstract:The behavior of niobium and tantalum is poorly understood in rocks that have undergone significant hydrothermal alteration, and niobium-tantalum minerals of hydrothermal origin are rarely mentioned in the literature. Consequently, the mobility of these critical metals, although widely considered to be negligible, has not been evaluated. In this paper, we present the results of a study of the genesis of niobium and tantalum mineralization in the Nechalacho rare metal deposit, Northwest Territories, Canada, which contains one of the largest known resources of these metals in rocks that have undergone intense hydrothermal alteration. Analyses and examination of samples using the electron microprobe has led to the identification of a variety of niobium- and tantalum-bearing minerals in the Nechalacho deposit. Niobium-bearing zircon, columbite-(Fe), fergusonite-(Y), and samarskite-(Y) were identified in the ore zones of the deposit, uranopyrochlore, and columbite-(Fe) were found outside the ore zones, and magmatic fluornatropyrochlore was shown to be the sole niobium-tantalum mineral in relatively unaltered syenites below the Basal ore zone. Based on the paragenetic relationships among the above minerals, variations in the composition of the columbite group minerals as a function of location in the Nechalacho Layered Suite and the distribution of niobium, tantalum, zirconium, and uranium in the bulk rocks, we have developed a model to explain the occurrence of niobium and tantalum in the Nechalacho deposit. The first step in the concentration of these elements was the crystallization of niobium- and tantalum-bearing zircon and eudialyte in the subhorizontal Upper and Basal ore zones, respectively. This was accompanied by the crystallization of magmatic columbite-(Fe) in the Upper ore zone. Fergusonite-(Y) crystallized in the Basal ore zone and also formed due to the breakdown of eudialyte. Outside the ore zones, there was crystallization of pyrochlore and to a lesser extent magmatic columbite-(Fe). This step led to the development of strong spatial associations among niobium, zirconium, and uranium that are evident as strong positive correlations in the bulk-rock concentrations of these elements at the meter scale. During the ensuing intense and widespread hydrothermal alteration, niobium was locally remobilized. Hydrothermal columbite-(Fe) and fergusonite-(Y) formed at the cores of altered zircon grains. Wholesale replacement of magmatic columbite-(Fe) and fergusonite-(Y) by hydrothermal anhedral crystals occurred in the two ore zones. The estimated relative proportions of the sources of these minerals in the ore zones, although varying to some extent because of a dependence on the amount of niobium mobilized from zircon, is ~40/60. Outside the ore zones, columbite-(Fe) and uranopyrochlore are the present manifestations of the former pyrochlore. With the exception of magmatic fluornatropyrochlore in the fresher syenites below the Basal ore zone and a single example of magmatic columbite-(Fe) in an Upper ore zone sample, all niobium and tantalum minerals have a hydrothermal origin as a result of this pervasive alteration.

Abstract:The Catalão I alkaline–carbonatite–phoscorite complex contains both fresh rock and residual (weathering-related) niobium mineralization. The fresh rock niobium deposit consists of two plug-shaped orebodies named Mine II and East Area, respectively emplaced in carbonatite and phlogopitite. Together, these orebodies contain 29Mt at 1.22wt.% Nb2O5 (measured and indicated). In closer detail, the orebodies consist of dike swarms of pyrochlore-bearing, olivine-free phoscorite-series rocks (nelsonite) that can be either apatite-rich (P2 unit) or magnetite-rich (P3 unit). Dolomite carbonatite (DC) is intimately related with nelsonite. Natropyrochlore and calciopyrochlore are the most abundant niobium phases in the fresh rock deposit. Pyrochlore supergroup chemistry shows a compositional trend from Ca–Na dominant pyrochlores toward Ba-enriched kenopyrochlore in fresh rock and the dominance of Ba-rich kenopyrochlore in the residual deposit. Carbonates associated with Ba-, Sr-enriched pyrochlore show higher δ18OSMOW than expected for carbonates crystallizing from mantle-derived magmas. We interpret both the δ18OSMOW and pyrochlore chemistry variations from the original composition as evidence of interaction with low-temperature fluids which, albeit not responsible for the mineralization, modified its magmatic isotopic features. The origin of the Catalão I niobium deposit is related to carbonatite magmatism but the process that generated such niobium-rich rocks is still undetermined and might be related to crystal accumulation and/or emplacement of a phosphate–iron-oxide magma.

New Evidence of Microbe Origin for Ferromanganese Nodules from the East Pacific Deep Sea Floor

Abstract:Using a fluorescence microscope and EPMA, abundant microbe "bodies" and clear microbic fluorescent microstructure are determined in the ferromanganese nodules recently collected from the East Pacific deep sea floor. The microbic fluorescent structure shows a close relation to the formation of the ferromanganese nodules. According to their morphological features, the microbes are classified into two types: one is named clumpy microbe, which takes a bar-shaped manganese mineral as a pillar and grows like fasciculate coral, resulting in irregular cauliflorate nodules with rough surfaces; the other is called filamentous microbe, which grows in very thin arcuate and/or concentric circular laminae composed of a microbe layer and a metal (manganese and iron)-rich layer, leading to potato-shaped nodules with relatively smooth surfaces. It also can be seen that the two types of microbes are intergrown together, resulting in nodules complicated in compositions and shapes.

Abstract:The celebrated early Cambrian Ni-Mo deposits that occur near Zunyi City of Guizhou Province, South China, are hosted in shales. The ore formation has been widely accepted to be related to biotic impact, but direct evidence is still lacking. In the present study of the Huangjiawan ore deposit, organic clots are found to occur widely in the Ni-Mo ore beds, but not in the barren layers. The clots are generally elliptic, with sizes ranging from 200 to 600 mu m. The clot morphology is similar to that of modern rhodophyta as reported in the literature. We tentatively interpret the clots as rhodophyte cystocarps. Electron microprobe analysis revealed that the clots have a differential accumulation of Ni and Mo, with Ni in the inner part and Mo in the outer part (of the cystocarp). Our study seems to have provided direct evidence for the biotic impact on the ore mineralization. (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Polymetallic nodules and crusts, hydrothermal vents from the Deep Sea are economically interesting, since they contain alloying components, e.g., manganese or cobalt, that are used in the production of special steels; in addition, they contain rare metals applied for plasma screens, for magnets in hard disks, or in hybrid car motors. While hydrothermal vents can regenerate in weeks, polymetallic nodules and seamount crusts grow slowly. Even though the geochemical basis for the growth of the nodules and crusts has been well studied, the contribution of microorganisms to the formation of these minerals remained obscure. Recent HR-SEM (high-resolution scanning electron microscopy) analyses of nodules and crusts support their biogenic origin. Within the nodules, bacteria with surface S-layers are arranged on biofilm-like structures, around which Mn deposition starts. In crusts, coccoliths represent the dominant biologically formed structures that act as bio-seeds for an initial Mn deposition. In contrast, hydrothermal vents have apparently an abiogenic origin; however, their minerals are biogenically transformed by bacteria. In turn, strategies can now be developed for biotechnological enrichment as well as selective dissolution of metals from such concretions. We are convinced that the recent discoveries will considerably contribute to our understanding of the participation of organic matrices in the enrichment of those metals and will provide the basis for feasibility studies for biotechnological applications.

Abstract:Abstract The Virulundo carbonatite in Angola is one of the largest in the world and contains pyrochlore as an accessory mineral in all of the carbonatite units (calciocarbonatites, ferrocarbonatites, carbonatite breccias and trachytoids). The primary magmatic pyrochlore is fluorine dominant and typically contains about equal molar quantities of Ca and Na at the A site. High-temperature hydrothermal processes have resulted in the pseudomorphic replacement of the primary pyrochlore by a second generation of pyrochlore with less F and Na. Low-temperature hydrothermal replacement of the first and second generation pyrochlore, associated with quartz-carbonate-fluorite vein formation in the carbonatite, has produced a third generation of pyrochlore, with a high Sr content. The Sr appears to have been released by low-temperature hydrothermal replacement of the primary magmatic carbonates. Finally, supergene alteration processes have produced late-stage carbonates, goethite, hollandite and rare earth element ( REE ) minerals (mainly synchysite-(Ce), britholite-(Ce), britholite-(La), cerite-(Ce)). Cerium separated from the other REE s in oxidizing conditions and Ce 4+ was incorporated into a late generation of supergene pyrochlore, which is strongly enriched in Ba and strongly depleted in Ca and Na.

Manganese/polymetallic nodules: micro-structural characterization of exolithobiontic- and endolithobiontic microbial biofilms by scanning electron microscopy

Abstract:Polymetallic/ferromanganese nodules (Mn-nodules) provide a rich source for manganese. It is not yet known if the nodules have a biogenic or an abiogenic origin. Here we applied the technique of high-resolution scanning electron microscopy, in combination with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopical (EDX) analysis, to trace the existence of microbial biofilms. Two spatially separated assemblies exist, the exolithobiontic- and endolithobiontic colonizations. The exolithobiontic colonization is seen in the micro-canals, which traverse the outer surface layer of the nodules and are formed by elongated filamentous organisms, which show no signs of mineralization. In the center of the nodules three types of endolithobiontic microbial biofilms exist: first, cone-like microorganisms forming biofilms, second stone/pillar-like microorganisms and finally paving stone-like, hexagonal microorganisms. All are covered by brick-like mineral deposits. By EDX analysis we could measured the highest relative level of carbon (C) with respect to manganese (Mn) and sodium on the microorganisms. Our data are in perfect agreement with the assumption that the Mn deposits in the nodules are of biogenic origin. In a first approach, DNA from microorganisms from the interior of those Mn-nodules was isolated by PCR, and sequenced with respect to the 16S ribosomal RNA gene. Sequence comparison revealed that the sequence from the Mn-nodule, studied here, shares highest similarity to a bacterium living in soil, rich in iron and manganese. We propose that the microorganisms form a biofilm within the nodules onto which Mn is deposited due to an oxidation from Mn(II) to Mn(III)/Mn(IV).

Abstract:Rare earth elements (REEs) are considered critical elements in modern society due to their irreplaceable role in new innovative and energy technologies. The giant carbonatite-related Bayan Obo deposit contributes most REE resources in the world’s market, while its origin is still unclear because of the complicated and diverse REE ore mineralogy and texture. Thescanning electron mircroscopy SEM)-based automated mineralogy allows for the numeric assessment of rocks and ores’ compositional and textural properties. Here, we use TIMA (TESCAN Integrated Mineral Analyzer) to quantitatively characterize REE ore mineralogy from the deep drill core within the H8 unit (“dolomite marble”) to better understand the deposit. The mineral composition, occurrence, and Ce elemental deportment of the borehole ores at different depths (i.e., 1107 m, 1246 m, 1406 m, 1546 m, and 1682 m) were obtained. The results show that the main types of ores in the investigated samples can be divided into banded REE-Fe ores, banded REE ores, disseminated REE-Fe ores, and veined REE ores. REE and gangue minerals vary significantly in abundance and occurrence. Monazite-(Ce) and bastnäsite-(Ce) are the primary REE host minerals, and both contribute the most to the REE budget. Other REE minerals, such as parisite-(Ce)/synchysite-(Ce), cerite-(Ce), huanghoite-(Ce)/cebaite-(Ce), and aeschynite-(Ce), are significant contributors. The gangue minerals generally include fluorite, barite, magnetite, pyrite, quartz, magnesio-arfvedsonite, and minerals of the biotite and apatite groups, among others. Combined with the newly published mineral-scale chronological and isotopic geochemical analyses, it is reasonable to conclude that the later hydrothermal fluids remobilized and redistributed the original Mesoproterozoic carbonatitic REE minerals and formed a high variable ore mineral assemblage. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the mineralogical study using TIMA can provide accurate and reliable mineralogy data for the comprehensive interpretation of the complex REE ores, and extend our understanding of the deposit.

Abstract:Experiments were conducted to test the hypothesis that carbonatite-hosted Nb deposits owe their origin to the metasomatic alteration of K-feldspar-rich fenite by carbonatitic magma. This involved reacting K-feldspar with a synthetic mixture of CaCO3, MgCO3, Mg(OH)2, CaF2, and Nb2O5. At the experimental conditions, a phlogopite-rich calcite-bearing metasomatic rind containing pyrochlore formed on the K-feldspar. This supports the above hypothesis and also explains the origin of fenite-associated glimmerite, the association of glimmerite with calcite carbonatite, and the genesis of the carbonatite-hosted ores that supply the bulk of the world’s niobium.

Abstract:The habitability of the hadal zone is not well understood and how microbes survive and adapt to this extreme environment is still largely unknown. Here we report the discovery of microbial biofilm that experience extensive Fe-mineralization on the surface of rocks from the Challenger Deep in the southern Mariana Trench. We found microbial biofilms of abundant globules internally permineralized by acicular goethite. The EDS analyses, combined with SEM and TEM, show that the globules are enriched in carbon and phosphorus, potentially indicating their biological origin. Cross sections of globules reveal a bilayer structure consisting of an acicular nano-crystalline core and a colloidal envelope. Vibrational spectroscopy reveals that this colloidal envelope is composed of EPS (extracellular polymeric substances). This mineralization is completely different from Fe-mineralization induced by all other known Fe-oxidizing bacteria, suggesting previously unknown interactions between Fe and microorganisms in hadal settings. Our findings highlight the significance of Fe-mineralization and its contributions to the ecosystem in hadal environments.

Abstract:Fe-(oxyhydr)oxide-encrusted filamentous microstructures produced by microorganisms have been widely reported in various modern and ancient extreme environments; however, the iron-dependent microorganisms preserved in hydrothermal quartz veins have not been explored in detail because of limited materials available. In this study, abundant well-preserved filamentous microstructures were observed in the hydrothermal quartz veins of the uppermost dolostones of the terminal-Ediacaran Qigebulake Formation in the Aksu area, northwestern Tarim Basin, China. These filamentous microstructures were permineralized by goethite and hematite as revealed by Raman spectroscopy and completely entombed in chalcedony and quartz cements. Microscopically, they are characterized by biogenic filamentous morphologies (commonly 20-200 μm in length and 1-5 μm in diameter) and structures (curved, tubular sheath-like, segmented, and mat-like filaments), similar to the Fe-oxidizing bacteria (FeOB) living in modern and ancient hydrothermal vent fields. A previous study revealed that quartz-barite vein swarms were subseafloor channels of low-temperature, silica-rich, diffusive hydrothermal vents in the earliest Cambrian, which contributed silica to the deposition of the overlying bedded chert of the Yurtus Formation. In this context, this study suggests that the putative filamentous FeOB preserved in the quartz veins might have thrived in the low-temperature, silica- and Fe(II)-rich hydrothermal vent channels in subseafloor mixing zones and were rapidly fossilized by subsequent higher-temperature, silica-rich hydrothermal fluids in response to waning and waxing fluctuations of diffuse hydrothermal venting. In view of the occurrence in a relatively stable passive continental margin shelf environment in Tarim Block, the silica-rich submarine hydrothermal vent system may represent a new and important geological niche favorable for FeOB colonization, which is different from their traditional habitats reported in hydrothermal vent systems at oceanic spreading centers or volcanic seamounts. Thus, these newly recognized microfossils offer a new clue to explore the biological signatures and habitat diversity of microorganisms on Earth and beyond.
Diverse phylogeny and morphology of magnetite biomineralized by magnetotactic cocci

Abstract:Magnetotactic bacteria (MTB) are diverse prokaryotes that produce magnetic nanocrystals within intracellular membranes (magnetosomes). Here, we present a large‐scale analysis of diversity and magnetosome biomineralization in modern magnetotactic cocci, which are the most abundant MTB morphotypes in nature. Nineteen novel magnetotactic cocci species are identified phylogenetically and structurally at the single‐cell level. Phylogenetic analysis demonstrates that the cocci cluster into an independent branch from other Alphaproteobacteria MTB, i.e., within the Etaproteobacteria class in the Proteobacteria phylum. Statistical analysis reveals species‐specific biomineralization of magnetosomal magnetite morphologies. This further confirms that magnetosome biomineralization is controlled strictly by the MTB cell and differs among species or strains. The post‐mortem remains of MTB are often preserved as magnetofossils within sediments or sedimentary rocks, yet paleobiological and geological interpretation of their fossil record remains challenging. Our results indicate that magnetofossil morphology could be a promising proxy for retrieving paleobiological information about ancient MTB.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Lava tubes on Mars hold exciting potential for the preservation of biosignatures, which may survive on geological timescales in these isolated, stable environments. To support the development of future astrobiological mission concepts, we turn to terrestrial lava tubes, host to a variety of microbial communities and secondary minerals. Following a multidisciplinary sampling protocol, we retrieved biological, molecular, and mineralogical data from several lava tubes in Iceland. We report on blue‐colored copper‐rich secondary minerals and their associated bacterial communities using a multi‐method approach, and an amalgam of 16S rRNA gene sequencing, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy data sets. We found numerous bacterial genera known for their high metal resistance and ability to survive in low‐nutrient environments. Both are characteristics to be expected for any potential life in Martian lava tubes, and should be considered when checking for contaminants in Mars mission preparations. Associated with the microbial mats, we identified several types of copper‐rich secondary minerals, indicating localized copper enrichments in the groundwater, possibly stemming from overlying ash deposits and nearby hyaloclastite formations. Molecular analysis revealed carotenoid signals preserved within the copper speleothems. If found in Martian lava tubes, blue copper‐rich mineral precipitates would be deserving of astrobiological investigation, as they have potential to preserve biosignatures and harbor life.This article is protected by copyright. Manganese-Cycling Microbial Communities Inside Deep-Sea Manganese Nodules

Abstract:Polymetallic nodules (manganese nodules) have been formed on deep sea sediments over millions of years and are currently explored for their economic potential, particularly for cobalt, nickel, copper, and manganese. Here we explored microbial communities inside nodules from the northeastern equatorial Pacific. The nodules have a large connected pore space with a huge inner surface of 120 m(2)/g as analyzed by computer tomography and BET measurements. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electron microprobe analysis revealed a complex chemical fine structure. This consisted of layers with highly variable Mn/Fe ratios (<1 to >500) and mainly of turbostratic phyllomanganates such as 7 and 10 Å vernadites alternating with layers of Fe-bearing vernadite (δ-MnO2) epitaxially intergrown with amorphous feroxyhyte (δ-FeOOH). Using molecular 16S rRNA gene techniques (clone libraries, pyrosequencing, and real-time PCR), we show that polymetallic nodules provide a suitable habitat for prokaryotes with an abundant and diverse prokaryotic community dominated by nodule-specific Mn(IV)-reducing and Mn(II)-oxidizing bacteria. These bacteria were not detected in the nodule-surrounding sediment. The high abundance and dominance of Mn-cycling bacteria in the manganese nodules argue for a biologically driven closed manganese cycle inside the nodules relevant for their formation and potential degradation.
