Abstract:We present a novel operando X-ray absorption spectroscopic (XAS) flow cell, consisting of a gas chamber for CO2 and a liquid chamber for the electrolyte, to monitor electrochemical CO2 reduction (eCO2R) over a gas diffusion electrode (GDE). The feasibility of the flow cell is demonstrated by collecting XAS data (during eCO2R over Cu-GDE) in a transmission mode at the Cu K-edge. The dynamic behaviour of copper during eCO2R is captured by XAS which is complemented by quasi in situ Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The linear combination analyses (LCA) of X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) indicate that copper oxides are the only species present during the first 20 min of eCO2R, corroborated by complementary Raman and XPS. Significantly, the complementary spectroscopic data suggests that the copper composition in the bulk and on the surface Cu-GDE evolve differently at and above 30 min of eCO2R. LCA indicates that at 60 min, 77% of copper occurs as metallic Cu and the remainder 23% in Cu (II) oxidation state, which is not evident from XPS that shows 100% of copper in < 2+ oxidation state. Thus, the Cu (II) is probably in the bulk of Cu-GDE, as also evident from Raman. The ethylene formation correlates very well with the occurrence of copper oxides and hydroxide species in Cu-GDE. The results not only demonstrate the applicability and versatility of the operando XAS GDE flow cell, but also illustrate the unique advantages of combining XAS with complementary Raman and XPS that enables the monitoring of the catalyst structural evolution from the bulk to surface and surface adsorbed species.

Abstract:Abstract Copper electrocatalysts have been shown to selectively reduce carbon dioxide to hydrocarbons. Nevertheless, the absence of a systematic study based on time-resolved spectroscopy renders the functional agent—either metallic or oxidative Copper—for the selectivity still undecidable. Herein, we develop an operando seconds-resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy to uncover the chemical state evolution of working catalysts. An oxide-derived Copper electrocatalyst is employed as a model catalyst to offer scientific insights into the roles metal states serve in carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO 2 RR). Using a potential switching approach, the model catalyst can achieve a steady chemical state of half-Cu(0)-and-half-Cu(I) and selectively produce asymmetric C 2 products - C 2 H 5 OH. Furthermore, a theoretical analysis reveals that a surface composed of Cu-Cu(I) ensembles can have dual carbon monoxide molecules coupled asymmetrically, which potentially enhances the catalyst’s CO 2 RR product selectivity toward C 2 products. Our results offer understandings of the fundamental chemical states and insights to the establishment of selective CO 2 RR.

Abstract:The quantitative understanding of how atomic-level catalyst structural changes affect the reactivity of the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction is challenging. Due to the complexity of catalytic systems, conventional in situ X-ray spectroscopy plays a limited role in tracing the underlying dynamic structural changes in catalysts active sites. Herein, operando high-energy resolution fluorescence-detected X-ray absorption spectroscopy was used to precisely identify the dynamic structural transformation of well-defined active sites of a representative model copper(II) phthalocyanine catalyst which is of guiding significance in studying single-atom catalysis system. Comprehensive X-ray spectroscopy analyses, including surface sensitive Δμ spectra which isolates the surface changes by subtracting the disturb of bulk base and X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy simulation, were used to discover that Cu species aggregated with increasing applied potential, which is responsible for the observed evolution of C2H4. The approach developed in this work, characterizing the active-site geometry and dynamic structural change, is a novel and powerful technique to elucidate complex catalytic mechanisms and is expected to contribute to the rational design of highly effective catalysts.

Abstract:Transition metal-based composites are one of the most important electrocatalysts because of their rich redox chemistry. The reaction kinetics of a redox couple is dependent on the chemical valence and is a key issue in electrocatalytic performance. In this study, a metallic Co catalyst was synthesized by pyrolyzing Co(OH)(2). The effect of the chemical valence of Co on the oxygen reduction reaction ( ORR) was investigated by comparing the electrocatalytic properties of three Co-based catalysts containing Co-0, Co2+, and Co3+. The electrocatalytic properties were evaluated mainly by linear scan voltammetry (LSV) and a direct borohydride fuel cell (DBFC) where the Co-based catalysts were used as cathodes. The LSV results show that the ORR peak current density increases with a decrease in chemical valence. The DBFC with the Co-0 cathode exhibits highest power density and good durability. In situ X-ray diffraction combined with in situ X-ray absorption fine structure tests was carried out to reveal the dynamic microstructure evolution of the Co-0 cathode during ORR. The in situ results clearly demonstrate the evolution of metallic Co to Co(OH) (2) and then to CoOOH during the ORR.

Abstract:Cupric materials are known to catalyze the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) and significantly improve the selectivity of multi-carbon products. Surface facet and structural effects play a critical role in the CO2RR. However, these surface mechanisms are poorly understood, and identifying trace intermediates on atomically-flat Cu(hkl) single-crystal surfaces, in situ, is a tremendously challenging task requiring sophisticated technical know-how. Here, in situ Raman spectroscopy was successfully used to provide critical evidence of CO2RR intermediates, especially the selectivity-determining intermediates *OCCO and *CH2CHO on Cu(hkl) surfaces. Combining the spectroscopic results with theoretical calculations, Cu(111) facilitates the generates C1 products through the formation of *COOH and *CO, while Cu(110) further generates C2 through the pathway of *OCCO and *CH2CHO. In addition, high KHCO3 concentrations facilitate the formation of *OCCO structure, promoting C2 products. This work provides a significant breakthrough for understanding the CO2RR mechanism that can guide the design of high-efficiency catalysts.

Operando Mossbauer Spectroscopic Tracking the Metastable State of Atomically Dispersed Tin in Copper Oxide for Selective CO2 Electroreduction

Abstract:Metastable state is the most active catalyst state that dictates the overall catalytic performance and rules of catalytic behaviors; however, identification and stabilization of the metastable state of catalyst are still highly challenging due to the continuous evolution of catalytic sites during the reaction process. In this work, operando Sn-119 Mossbauer measurements and theoretical simulations were performed to track and identify the metastable state of single-atom Sn in copper oxide (Sn-1-CuO) for highly selective CO2 electroreduction to CO. A maximum CO Faradaic efficiency of around 98% at -0.8 V (vs. RHE) over Sn-1-CuO was achieved at an optimized Sn loading of 5.25 wt. %. Operando Mossbauer spectroscopy clearly identified the dynamic evolution of atomically dispersed Sn4+ sites in the CuO matrix that enabled the in situ transformation of Sn4+-O-4-Cu2+ to a metastable state Sn4+-O-3-Cu+ under CO2RR conditions. In combination with quasi in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, operando Raman and attenuated total reflectance surface enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopies, the promoted desorption of *CO over the Sn4+-O-3 stabilized adjacent Cu+ site was evidenced. In addition, density functional theory calculations further verified that the in situ construction of Sn4+-O-3-Cu+ as the true catalytic site altered the reaction path via modifying the adsorption configuration of the *COOH intermediate, which effectively reduced the reaction free energy required for the hydrogenation of CO2 and the desorption of the *CO, thereby greatly facilitating the CO2-to-CO conversion. This work provides a fundamental insight into the role of single Sn atoms on in situ tuning the electronic structure of Cu-based catalysts, which may pave the way for the development of efficient catalysts for high-selectivity CO2 electroreduction.

Abstract:Oxide-derived copper (OD-Cu) has been shown to favor C2 and C3 products in electrochemical CO reduction at lower overpotentials than polycrystalline copper (Cu-poly). Despite numerous studies and proposed mechanisms, the exact nature of the active phase is still a topic of discussion. In this work, we employ operando attenuated total reflection surface enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (ATR-SEIRAS) to investigate different sites available on Cu-poly and OD-Cu surfaces using CO as a probe molecule. We identify a CO adsorption band on OD-Cu at 2058 cm–1 that is different from those on Cu-poly but resembles CO bound to the Cu(100) facet. In accordance with reactivity studies, we propose that this band corresponding to distinct CO binding sites is responsible for OD-Cu’s enhanced CO reduction activity.

Abstract:Abstract The implementation of low-cost transition-metal complexes in CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) is hampered by poor mechanistic understanding. Herein, a carbon-supported copper bis-(terpyridine) complex enabling facile kilogram-scale production of the catalyst is developed. We directly observe an intriguing baton-relay-like mechanism of active sites transfer by employing a widely accessible operando Raman/Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy analysis coupled with density functional theory computations. Our analyses reveal that the first protonation step involves Cu-N bond breakage before the *COOH intermediate forms exclusively at the central N site, followed by an N-to-Cu active site transfer. This unique active site transfer features energetically favorable *CO formation on Cu sites, low-barrier CO desorption and reversible catalyst regeneration, endowing the catalyst with a CO selectively of 99.5 %, 80 h stability, and a turn-over efficiency of 9.4 s −1 at −0.6 V vs. the reversible hydrogen electrode in an H-type cell configuration. We expect that the approach and findings presented here may accelerate future mechanistic studies of next-generation CO 2 RR electrocatalysts.

Operando Spectroscopic Analysis of Axial Oxygen-Coordinated Single-Sn-Atom Sites for Electrochemical CO2 Reduction

Abstract:Sn-based materials have been demonstrated as promising catalysts for the selective electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). However, the detailed structures of catalytic intermediates and the key surface species remain to be identified. In this work, a series of single-Sn-atom catalysts with well-defined structures is developed as model systems to explore their electrochemical reactivity toward CO2RR. The selectivity and activity of CO2 reduction to formic acid on Sn-single-atom sites are shown to be correlated with Sn(IV)-N4 moieties axially coordinated with oxygen (O-Sn-N4), reaching an optimal HCOOH Faradaic efficiency of 89.4% with a partial current density (jHCOOH) of 74.8 mA·cm-2 at -1.0 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). Employing a combination of operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy, attenuated total reflectance surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and 119Sn Mössbauer spectroscopy, surface-bound bidentate tin carbonate species are captured during CO2RR. Moreover, the electronic and coordination structures of the single-Sn-atom species under reaction conditions are determined. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further support the preferred formation of Sn-O-CO2 species over the O-Sn-N4 sites, which effectively modulates the adsorption configuration of the reactive intermediates and lowers the energy barrier for the hydrogenation of *OCHO species, as compared to the preferred formation of *COOH species over the Sn-N4 sites, thereby greatly facilitating CO2-to-HCOOH conversion.

Abstract:The reaction mechanism of CO2 electroreduction on oxide-derived copper has not yet been unraveled even though high C2+ Faradaic efficiencies are commonly observed on these surfaces. In this study, we aim to explore the effects of copper anodization on the adsorption of various CO2RR intermediates using in situ surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (SEIRAS) on metallic and mildly anodized copper thin films. The in situ SEIRAS results show that the preoxidation process can significantly improve the overall CO2 reduction activity by (1) enhancing CO2 activation, (2) increasing CO uptake, and (3) promoting C-C coupling. First, the strong *COO- redshift indicates that the preoxidation process significantly enhances the first elementary step of CO2 adsorption and activation. The rapid uptake of adsorbed *COatop also illustrates how a high *CO coverage can be achieved in oxide-derived copper electrocatalysts. Finally, for the first time, we observed the formation of the *COCHO dimer on the anodized copper thin film. Using DFT calculations, we show how the presence of subsurface oxygen within the Cu lattice can improve the thermodynamics of C2 product formation via the coupling of adsorbed *CO and *CHO intermediates. This study advances our understanding of the role of surface and subsurface conditions in improving the catalytic reaction kinetics and product selectivity of CO2 reduction.
Insight into the Activity and Selectivity of Nanostructured Copper Titanates during Electrochemical Conversion of CO 2 at Neutral pH via In Situ X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy

Abstract:The electrochemical conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) to useful chemical fuels is a promising route toward the achievement of carbon neutral and carbon negative energy technologies. Copper (Cu)- and Cu oxide-derived surfaces are known to electrochemically convert CO2 to high-value and energy-dense products. However, the nature and stability of oxidized Cu species under reaction conditions are the subject of much debate in the literature. Herein, we present the synthesis and characterization of copper-titanate nanocatalysts, with discrete Cu-O coordination environments, for the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). We employ real-time in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) to monitor Cu species under neutral-pH CO2RR conditions. Combination of voltammetry and on-line electrochemical mass spectrometry with XAS results demonstrates that the titanate motif promotes the retention of oxidized Cu species under reducing conditions for extended periods, without itself possessing any CO2RR activity. Additionally, we demonstrate that the specific nature of the Cu-O environment and the size of the catalyst dictate the long-term stability of the oxidized Cu species and, subsequently, the product selectivity.

Performance and characteristics of a high pressure, high temperature capillary cell with facile construction for operando x-ray absorption spectroscopy

Abstract:We demonstrate the use of commercially available fused silica capillary and fittings to construct a cell for operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) for the study of heterogeneously catalyzed reactions under high pressure (up to 200 bars) and high temperature (up to 280 °C) conditions. As the first demonstration, the cell was used for CO2 hydrogenation reaction to examine the state of copper in a conventional Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 methanol synthesis catalyst. The active copper component of the catalyst was shown to remain in the metallic state under supercritical reaction conditions, at 200 bars and up to 260 °C. With the coiled heating system around the capillary, one can easily change the length of the capillary and control the amount of catalyst under investigation. With precise control of reactant(s) flow, the cell can mimic and serve as a conventional fixed-bed micro-reactor system to obtain reliable catalytic data. This high comparability of the reaction performance of the cell and laboratory reactors is crucial to gain insights into the nature of actual active sites under technologically relevant reaction conditions. The large length of the capillary can cause its bending upon heating when it is only fixed at both ends because of the thermal expansion. The degree of the bending can vary depending on the heating mode, and solutions to this problem are also presented. Furthermore, the cell is suitable for Raman studies, nowadays available at several beamlines for combined measurements. A concise study of CO2 phase behavior by Raman spectroscopy is presented to demonstrate a potential of the cell for combined XAS-Raman studies.

Abstract:Improvement of electrochemical technologies is one of the most popular topic in the field of renewable energy. However, this process requires a deep understanding of the electrode–electrolyte interface behavior under operando conditions. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is widely employed in the characterization of electrode materials, providing element-selective oxidation state and local structure. Several existing cells allow studies as close as possible to realistic operating conditions, but most of them rely on the deposition of the electrodes on conductive and X-ray transparent materials, from where the radiation impinge the sample. In this work, we present a new electrochemical flow-cell for operando XAS that can be used with X-ray opaque substrates, since the signal is effectively detected from the electrode surface, as the radiation passes through a thin layer of electrolyte (∼17 μm). The electrolyte can flow over the electrode, reducing bubble formation and avoiding strong reactant concentration gradients. We show that high quality data can be obtained under operando conditions, thanks to the high efficiency of the cell from the hard X-ray regime down to ∼ 4 keV.We report as a case study the operando XAS investigation at the Fe and Ni K-edges on Ni-doped γ-Fe2O3 films, epitaxially grown on Pt substrates. The effect of the Ni content on the catalytic performances for the oxygen evolution reaction are discussed.

Abstract:Abstract Copper-based materials can reliably convert carbon dioxide into multi-carbon products but they suffer from poor activity and product selectivity. The atomic structure-activity relationship of electrocatalysts for the selectivity is controversial due to the lacking of systemic multiple dimensions for operando condition study. Herein, we synthesized high-performance CO 2 RR catalyst comprising of CuO clusters supported on N-doped carbon nanosheets, which exhibited high C 2+ products Faradaic efficiency of 73% including decent ethanol selectivity of 51% with a partial current density of 14.4 mA/cm −2 at −1.1 V vs. RHE. We evidenced catalyst restructuring and tracked the variation of the active states under reaction conditions, presenting the atomic structure-activity relationship of this catalyst. Operando XAS, XANES simulations and Quasi-in-situ XPS analyses identified a reversible potential-dependent transformation from dispersed CuO clusters to Cu 2 -CuN 3 clusters which are the optimal sites. This cluster can’t exist without the applied potential. The N-doping dispersed the reduced Cu n clusters uniformly and maintained excellent stability and high activity with adjusting the charge distribution between the Cu atoms and N-doped carbon interface. By combining Operando FTIR and DFT calculations, it was recognized that the Cu 2 -CuN 3 clusters displayed charge-asymmetric sites which were intensified by CH 3 * adsorbing, beneficial to the formation of the high-efficiency asymmetric ethanol.

Abstract:This article describes the setting up of a facility on the energy-scanning EXAFS beamline (BL-09) at RRCAT, Indore, India, for operando studies of structure-activity correlation during a catalytic reaction. The setup was tested by operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) studies performed on a Co-based catalyst during the Fischer-Tropsch reaction to obtain information regarding structural changes in the catalyst during the reaction. Simultaneous gas chromatography (GC) measurements during the reaction facilitate monitoring of the product gases, which in turn gives information regarding the activity of the catalyst. The combination of XAS and GC techniques was used to correlate the structural changes with the activity of the catalyst at different reaction temperatures. The oxide catalyst was reduced to the metallic phase by heating at 400°C for 5 h under H2 at ambient pressure and subsequently the catalytic reaction was studied at four different temperatures of 240, 260, 280 and 320°C. The catalyst was studied for 10 h at 320°C and an attempt has been made to understand the process of its deactivation from the XANES and EXAFS results.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide, as a greenhouse gas, is expected to be converted into other useful substances by the electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) technology. The electrocatalytic cell, or electrochemical cell, used to provide the experimental environment for CO 2 RR plays an irreplaceable role in the study of this process and determines the success or failure of the measurements. In recent years, electrolytic cells that can be applied to in-situ /operational synchrotron radiation (SR) characterization techniques have gradually gained widespread attention. However, the design and understanding of electrolyte systems that can be applied to in-situ /operational SR technologies are still not sufficiently advanced. In this paper, the electrocatalytic cells used to study the CO 2 RR processes with in-situ /operando SR techniques are briefly introduced, and the types and characteristics of the electrolytic cells are analyzed. The recent advancements of in situ /operando electrolytic cells are discussed using X-ray scattering, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), light vibration spectroscopy, and X-ray combined techniques. An outlook is provided on the future prospects of this research field. This review facilitates the understanding of the reduction process and electrocatalytic mechanism of CO 2 RR at the atomic and molecular scales, providing insights for the design of electrolysis cells applicable to SR technologies and accelerating the development of more efficient and sustainable carbon negative technologies.

Abstract:Improvement of electrochemical technologies is one of the most popular topics in the field of renewable energy. However, this process requires a deep understanding of the electrode electrolyte interface behavior under operando conditions. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is widely employed to characterize electrode materials, providing element-selective oxidation state and local structure. Several existing cells allow studies as close as possible to realistic operating conditions, but most of them rely on the deposition of the electrodes on conductive and X-ray transparent materials, from where the radiation impinges the sample. In this work, we present a new electrochemical flow-cell for operando XAS that can be used with X-ray opaque substrates, since the signal is effectively detected from the electrode surface, as the radiation passes through a thin layer of electrolyte. The electrolyte can flow over the electrode, reducing bubble formation and avoiding strong reactant concentration gradients. We show that high-quality data can be obtained under operando conditions, thanks to the high efficiency of the cell from the hard X-ray regime down to 4 keV. We report as a case study the operando XAS investigation at the Fe and Ni K-edges on Ni-doped maghemite films, epitaxially grown on Pt substrates. The effect of the Ni content on the catalytic performances for the oxygen evolution reaction is discussed.

Operando probing of nanocracking in CuO-derived Cu during CO$_2$ electroreduction

Abstract:Identifying and controlling active sites in electrocatalysis remains a grand challenge due to restructuring of catalysts in the complex chemical environments during operation. Inactive precatalysts can transform into active catalysts under reaction conditions, such as oxide-derived Cu (OD-Cu) for CO$_2$ electroreduction displaying improved production of multicarbon (C$_{2+}$) chemicals. Revealing the mechanism of active site origin in OD-Cu catalysts requires in situ/operando characterizations of structure, morphology, and valence state evolution with high spatial and temporal resolution. Applying newly developed electrochemical liquid cell transmission electron microscopy combined with X-ray absorption spectroscopy, our multimodal operando techniques unveil the formation pathways of OD-Cu active sites from CuO bicrystal nanowire precatalysts. Rapid reduction of CuO directly to Cu within 60 seconds generates a nanocrack network throughout the nanowire, via formation of "boundary nanocracks" along the twin boundary and "transverse nanocracks" propagating from the surface to the center of the nanowire. The nanocrack network further reconstructs, leading to a highly porous structure rich in Cu nanograins, with a boosted specific surface area and density of active sites for C$_{2+}$ products. These findings suggest a means to optimize active OD-Cu nanostructures through nanocracking by tailoring grain boundaries in CuO precatalysts. More generally, our advanced operando approach opens new opportunities for mechanistic insights to enable improved control of catalyst structure and performance.

Abstract:The catalytic conversion of CO2 to fuels or chemicals is considered to be an effective pathway to mitigate the greenhouse effect. To develop new types of efficient and durable catalysts, it is critical to identify the catalytic active sites, surface intermediates, and reaction mechanisms to reveal the relationship between the active sites and catalytic performance. However, the structure of a heterogeneous catalyst usually dynamically changes during reaction, bringing a great challenge for the identification of catalytic active sites and reaction pathways. Therefore, in-situ/operando techniques have been employed to real-time monitor the dynamic evolution of the structure of active sites under actual reaction conditions to precisely build the structure-function relationship. Here, we review the recent progress in the application of various in-situ/operando techniques in identifying active sites for catalytic conversion of CO2 over heterogeneous catalysts. We systematically summarize the applications of various optical and X-ray spectroscopy techniques, including Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), in identifying active sites and determining reaction mechanisms of the CO2 thermochemical conversion with hydrogen and light alkanes over heterogeneous catalysts. Finally, we discuss challenges and opportunities for the development of in-situ characterization in the future to further enlarge the capability of these powerful techniques.
