Abstract:Impervious surfaces are crucial ecological indicators that reflect human activity and environmental changes. However, mapping large-scale impervious surfaces remains a significant challenge. This study aims to develop an approach for accurately mapping large-scale impervious surface percentage (ISP) from satellite remote sensing imagery in the Yellow River Delta High-efficiency Ecological Economic Zone through comparing several machine learning and deep learning methods. Firstly, GF-1 PMS data were used to generate ISP reference data, which were then combined with GF-6 WFV data in the same period to create the ISP samples. Subsequently, models including SVM, CART, RF, XGBoost, CatBoost, LightGBM, U-net, and DeepLabv3 + were trained and evaluated for accuracy, followed by visual comparison analysis. The experimental results revealed that: (1) the RF-based ISP model achieved the highest accuracy, with MSE, RMSE, MAE, and R-square values of 0.0360, 0.1896, 0.1132, and 0.7294, respectively; (2) the U-net method provided the best visual effect for ISP mapping in the test area, on par with the result of the RF; (3) the ISP data for the entire study area yielded by the RF method revealed that high ISP and low ISP values are distributed along the southeast and the northwest of study area, respectively. This study provides a reference for large-scale accurate ISP mapping, and the resultant ISP of the study area served for urban structure optimization and ecological environment protection.
