Abstract:Optimizing interfacial contacts and thus electron transfer phenomena in heterogeneous electrocatalysts is an effective approach for enhancing electrocatalytic performance. Herein, we successfully synthesized ultrafine β-Mo2C nanoparticles confined within hollow capsules of nitrogen-doped porous carbon (β-Mo2C@NPCC) and found that the surface layer of molybdenum atoms was further oxidized to a single Mo–O surface layer, thus producing intimate O–Mo–C interfaces. An arsenal of complementary technologies, including XPS, atomic-resolution HAADF-STEM, and XAS analysis clearly reveals the existence of O–Mo–C interfaces for these surface-engineered ultrafine nanostructures. The β-Mo2C@NPCC electrocatalyst exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in water. Theoretical studies indicate that the highly accessible ultrathin O–Mo–C interfaces serving as the active sites are crucial to the HER performance and underpinned the outstanding electrocatalytic performance of β-Mo2C@NPCC. This proof-of-concept study opens a new avenue for the fabrication of highly efficient catalysts for HER and other applications, whilst further demonstrating the importance of exposed interfaces and interfacial contacts in efficient electrocatalysis.

Abstract:Tailor-made advanced electrocatalysts with high active and stable for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) play a key role in the development of hydrogen economy. Herein, a N,P-co-doped molybdenum carbide confined in porous carbon matrix (N,P-Mo2C/NPC) with a hierarchical structure is prepared by a resources recovery process. The N,P-Mo2C/NPC compound exhibits outstanding HER activity with a low overpotential of 84 mV to achieve 10 mA/cm2, and excellent stability in alkaline media. The electrochemical measurements confirm that the enhanced HER activity of N,P-Mo2C/NPC is ascribe to the synergy of N,P-codoped and porous carbon matrix. Density functional theory calculations further reveal that the electron density of active sites on Mo2C can be regulated by the N/P doping, leading to optimal H adsorption strength. In this work, the proof-of-concept resource utilization, a microorganism derived molybdenum carbide electrocatalyst for HER is fabricated, which may inaugurate a new way for designing electrocatalysts by the utilization of solid waste.

Abstract:Exploration for an earth-rich and competent electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is a significant and challenging approach to confronting the resources shortage and environmental crisis. Porous N-doped Mo2C@C (N-Mo2C@C) nanoparticles self-encapsulated in nanospheres are presented as a high-performing HER electrocatalyst fabricated through a one-pot solvothermal method followed by hydrogen calcination. Structural analyses show that acetamide can regulate the size of the nanospheres, provide a N source for doping and form porous structures composed of Mo2C, which suggests the exposure of extensive active sites as well as the contact and diffusion among the medium, electrodes, and gas. Theoretical calculations show that the N doping can enhance the activity of the Mo-C bond, reduce the energy of capturing hydrogen intermediates, and increase the catalytic conductivity. This work offers a simple and promising strategy to understand the catalytic mechanism required to optimize the activity of Mo-based electrocatalysts via N doping.

Abstract:Molybdenum phosphide (MoP) is recognized as one of the most promising catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), yet the low electronic conductivity and complicated synthesis process still restrict the commercialization process of its replacement for the benchmark Pt/C catalyst. Herein, a kind of novel MoP nanoparticles encapsulated with biomolecule-derived N, P-codoped carbon nanosheets has been successfully fabricated by a simple one-step pyrolysis of ammonium molybdate tetrahydrate, 1-hydroxyethylidene diphosphonic acid (HEDP) and a unique biomolecule guanine as the precursor of two-dimensional carbon materials. Benefiting from the well-designed architecture of both good electronic conductivity and easily accessible catalytic sites provided by 2D carbon structure, the optimized catalyst thus exhibits synergistically enhanced HER activity in both alkaline and acidic conditions, especially with a low overpotential of 104 mV to deliver 10 mA/cm2 in 1M KOH. Moreover, the coverage of N, P-codoped graphene-like carbon layers can prevent the MoP nanoparticles from corrosion under harsh reaction media to achieve superior durability. This work has opened up a new direction for further development of simple, low-cost but efficient novel electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Transition metal carbides (TMCs) are regarded as cost-efficient and stable electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Nitrogen doping into nanosized TMCs in a control manner (e.g. doping amount and site) is one of the most effective routes to intrinsically enhance the activity and durability owing to the ameliorated Mo–H strength and amplified active sites. Herein, an approach based on reticular chemistry is developed to synthesize nanosized N-doped Mo2C embedded in porous carbon (N–Mo2C/PC), via pyrolyzing a hybrid precursor consisting of highly-dispersed molybdates within melamine-benzenetricarboxylic acid supermolecule networks. With optimal N-doping, the N–Mo2C/PC electrocatalyst exhibits an excellent HER stability and activity with overpotential of 109 mV at 10 mA cm−2 in 0.5 M H2SO4, as well as 100 mV at 10 mA cm−2 in 1.0 M KOH. Density functional theory calculations confirm that the appropriate N doping on the surface of Mo2C nanoparticles would accelerate the HER process via weakening the Mo–H bond strength and lowering the H–H coupling barrier. Furthermore, Mo2C nanoparticles loaded on carbon cloth with high HER activity can also be successfully achieved by this strategy. This work paves a universal way to design active sites-enriched TMCs with high performance in energy conversion and storages.

Abstract:Molybdenum carbide materials have demonstrated remarkable potential in catalyzing the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, further modulation of their performance through simultaneously engineering the size and surface crystal facets remains challenging. Herein, we report the successful fabrication of N-doped carbon-supported monodisperse Mo2C nanoparticles with a size of similar to 2.06 nm, exhibiting co-exposed (101)/(102) facets-heterojunction, derived from annealing glycine and ammonium molybdate tetrahydrate. The optimized Mo2C/NC-Amt catalyst exhibits a low overpotentials of 128 mV to achieve the current density of 10 mA cm(-2) and a small Tafel slope of 72 mV dec(-1) under alkaline solution. By changing the molybdate precursor, the phase and crystal facet composition of molybdenum carbide can be effectively tuned, which provides a good platform for studying their structure-activity in HER. The theoretical calculations reveal the synergistic effect of (101)/(102) facets-heterojunction accelerates electron transfer and regulates the d band center of Mo2C, reducing the reaction barriers of intermediates in the HER process, thus significantly boosting reaction activity. This work proposes a novel insight into the rational fabrication of efficient HER catalysts through facet engineering toward heterojunction construction under the 2.5 nm region.

Abstract:Molybdenum (Mo) based compounds have attracted growing attention in the electrochemical field due to their abundant reserves, high catalytic activity and stability. However, the efficient implementation of MoP for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) has been hindered by the limited number of active centers and the weakening electron transferring rate resulting from poor conductivity and easy accumulation during preparation. Herein, we innovate the use of porous poly(ionic liquid)s (MPILs)-loaded phosphomolybdic acid by ion exchange to achieve porous N, P-codoped carbon-encapsulated ultrafine MoP (MoP@NPC). The electronic structure of MoP can be modulated with the carbon matrix, while ultrafine average size of 3 nm nanoparticles afford highly exposed active sites, thus contributing to the boosted electrocatalytic performance of HER. Besides, N, P-codoped carbon coupling with porous structure could facilitate electron transport and shorten the ion transport distance during the electrochemical process. In alkaline media, the optimized MoP@NPC shows small overpotentials of 134 mV with Tafel slopes of 76 mV dec−1 for HER. In addition, excellent electrocatalysis stability has been acquired by MoP@NPC. The in-situ Raman and ex-situ XPS techniques are applied to confirm the superior electrocatalytic HER property of the obtained MoP@NPC. This work provides a new way to prepare a novel Mo-based electrocatalyst by exploiting a special catalyst precursor for hydrogen-energy-related applications.

Abstract:Molybdenum phosphides (MoP) have been demonstrated to be effective electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The active sites of MoP particles and interface connections of MoP particles with carbon nanotube conducting networks are crucial to enhance their electrocatalytic performance. However, it is a big challenge to control the active sites of MoP and the interconnections between active materials with conducting networks. An in-situ method to fabricate MoP nanoparticles on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) has been investigated to give MoP/MWCNTs with high active sites of MoP nanoparticles and strong interconnections between MoP nanoparticles and conducting MWCNTs from in-situ grown molybdenum sulfide (MoSx) on MWCNTs (MoSx/MWCNTs) precursors. The MoSx on MWCNTs were directly converted into MoP nanoparticles with strong interconnections with the carbon nanotube conducting networks. The morphology and distribution of MoP were adjusted by changing the Mo-C ratio to obtain large amount of active sites. The MoP/MWCNTs with Mo-C ratio of 1/2 have been demonstrated to significantly enhance the HER performance. Overpotentials of 109 mV and 155 mV have been obtained at 10 mA cm-2 with corresponding small Tafel slope of 56.5 mV dec-1 and 56.8 mV dec-1 in acidic and alkaline solution, respectively.

Abstract:A highly active and stable electrochemical catalyst of nanoporous molybdenum carbide nanowires (np-Mo2C NWs) has been developed for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The np-Mo2C NWs were synthesized simply by pyrolysis of a MoOx,/amine hybrid precursor with sub-nanosized periodic structure under an inert atmosphere. The enriched nanoporosity and large reactive surface of these highly dispersed nanowires with uniform Mo2C nanocrystallites provide an efficient electrocatalysis, leading to their superior HER activity with lower onset overpotential and higher current densities than Mo2C microparticles. This study opens a new perspective for the development of highly active non-noble electrocatalysts for hydrogen production from water splitting.

Abstract:Herein, a series of porous nano-structured carbocatalysts have been fused and decorated by Mo-based composites, such as Mo2 C, MoN, and MoP, to form a hybrid structures. Using the open porosity derived from the pyrolysis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), the highly dispersive MoO2 small nanoparticles can be deposited in porous carbon by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Undergoing different treatments of carbonization, nitridation, and phosphorization, the Mo2 C-, MoN-, and MoP-decorated carbocatalysts can be selectively prepared with un-changed morphology. Among these Mo-based composites, the MoP@Porous carbon (MoP@PC) composites exhibited remarkable catalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in 0.5 m H2 SO4 aqueous solution versus MoO2 @PC, Mo2 C@PC, and MoN@PC. This study gives a promising family of multifunctional lab-on-a-particle architectures which shed light on energy conversion and fuel-cell catalysis.
Molybdenum Carbide Nanoparticles Embedded in Nitrogen-Doped Porous Carbon Nanofibers As a Dual Catalyst for Hydrogen Evolution and Oxygen Reduction Reactions

Abstract:An efficient dual catalyst of molybdenum carbide nanoparticles embedded nitrogen-doped porous carbon nanofibers (Mo2C/NPCNFs) has been developed for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The well-aligned and nanoporous identity of the desirable hybrid Mo2C/NPCNFs by an electrospun approach provides the good conductivity and rich active sites addressing excellent HER catalytic performance with an onset potential of -85 mV, a Tafel slope of 68 mV dec(-1), and an exchange current density of 0.178 mA cm(-2) in 0.5 M H2SO4. It is noting that the Mo2C/NPCNFs also shows remarkable ORR catalytic activity with an onset potential of similar to 0.9 V, a half-potential of similar to 0.77 V and a Tafel slope of 60.2 mV dec(-1) at 1600 rpm in 0.1 M KOH. In addition, the experimental results demonstrate the core-shell 1D nanostructures boost the Mo2C/NPCNFs' stability of the durable catalytic activity over 10 h for both HER and ORR. This study designs a new structure for carbon-supported Mo2C composites, providing a distinctive course for the development of high-performance non-noble HER and ORR catalysts. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Efficient electrocatalyst plays a significant role on the development of hydrogen energy. In this work, an N,P-codoped carbon layer coupled with MoP nanoparticles (MoP/NPCs) was prepared through a facile high-temperature pyrolysis treatment. The obtained MoP/NPCs presented efficient activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), with low onset potential of 90 mV, and a small Tafel slope (71 mV dec-1), as well as extraordinary stability in acidic electrolyte. This work provides a new facile strategy for the design and synthesis of sustainable and effective molybdenum-based electrocatalysts as alternatives to non-Pt catalysts for HER.

Abstract:Developing highly-efficient and stable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts plays a crucial role in realizing the hydrogen production from electrocatalytic water splitting. Herein, ultra-small and nitrogen-doped molybdenum carbide (N-Mo2C) nanoparticles with oxidized surfaces are facilely synthesized with the assistance of cationic surfactants and simultaneously anchored onto three-dimensional nitrogen-doped flower-like carbon nanospheres (NFCNS), and the N-Mo2C/NFCNS composites are further investigated as HER electrocatalysts. Analysis results reveal that nitrogen atoms are doped into both the lattice and the carbon framework of Mo2C, resulting in low desorption energy of Mo-H bond for the easy evolution of hydrogen gas. Moreover, the high specific area of NFCNS enables enrichment of N-Mo2C nanoparticles, and its open framework facilitates fast ion diffusion. As a result, the N-Mo2C/NFCNS composites exhibit impressive HER activities with low overpotential, small Tafel slope, and excellent durability in both acidic and alkaline media, which outperform most of the reported Mo-based HER catalysts and are also highly comparable to the commercial Pt/C catalyst. Not limited to HER electrocatalysts, this work should open a new avenue for tailoring highly-efficient carbon/metal compounds-based electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction, oxygen evolution reaction, nitrogen reduction reaction, etc.

Well-Defined Mo2C Nanoparticles Embedded in Porous N-Doped Carbon Matrix for Highly Efficient Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:On the design of efficient and affordable electrocatalysts for water reduction half reaction, this paper fabricates molybdenum carbide nanoparticles uniformly loaded in highly porous N-doped carbon matrix derived from polyaniline-molybdate monolith with the use of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) as template. The obtained molybdenum carbide-carbon hybrid catalysts (MoC@NCS) exhibit extraordinarily electrochemical hydrogen evolution activity with a small overpotential of 89 and 81 mV to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm-2 in alkaline (1.0 M KOH) and acidic (0.5 M H2SO4) medium, respectively, even comparable to noble-metal Pt/C benchmark. Specially, MoC@NCS also shows excellent long-term durability in alkaline or acidic electrolyte. Furthermore, the obtained carbon matrix (NCS) featuring high content of N dopants and hierarchically porous architecture exhibits high catalytic efficiency for oxygen evolution reaction in alkaline electrolyte. For a further step, the obtained NCS coupled with the MoC@NCS, working as anodic and cathodic electrodes, in a two-electrode alkaline electrolyzer for overall water splitting, which can obtain a current density of 10 mA cm-2 at 1.69 V, along with robust operation durability. The synergistic effect of the porous carbon matrix of high nitrogen content and the molybdenum carbide nanoparticles of uniform distribution, together with hierarchically porous structure, should be responsible for the outstanding electrocatalytic HER performance. This work presents an easy and cost-effective strategy to prepare molybdenum-based materials with controlled size for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

Abstract:Molybdenum carbide (Mo 2 C) has been considered as a promising non-noble-metal hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalyst for future clean energy devices. In this work, we report a facile, green, low-cost and scalable method for the synthesis of a Mo 2 C-based HER electrocatalyst consisting of ultrafine Mo 2 C nanoparticles embedded within bacterial cellulose-derived 3D N-doped carbon nanofiber networks (Mo 2 C@N-CNFs) using 3D nanostructured biomass as a precursor. The electrocatalyst exhibits remarkable HER activity (an overpotential of 167 mV achieves 10 mA cm −2 and a high exchange current density of 4.73 × 10 −2 mA cm −2 ) and excellent stability in acidic media as well as high HER activity in neutral and basic media. Further theoretical calculations indicate a strong synergistic effect between Mo 2 C nanoparticles and N-CNFs in the Mo 2 C@N-CNF catalyst, which leads to an impressive HER performance.
Ultrafine Dual‐Phased Carbide Nanocrystals Confined in Porous Nitrogen‐Doped Carbon Dodecahedrons for Efficient Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:Designing novel non‐noble electrocatalysts with controlled structures and composition remains a great challenge for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, a rational synthesis of ultrafine carbide nanocrystals confined in porous nitrogen‐doped carbon dodecahedrons (PNCDs) by annealing functional zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF‐8) with molybdate or tungstate is reported. By controlling the substitution amount of MO4 units (M = Mo or W) in the ZIF‐8 framework, dual‐phase carbide nanocrystals confined in PNCDs (denoted as MC‐M2C/PNCDs) can be obtained, which exhibit superior activity toward the HER to the single‐phased MC/PNCDs and M2C/PNCDs. The evenly distributed ultrafine nanocrystals favor the exposure of active sites. PNCDs as the support facilitate charge transfer and protect the nanocrystals from aggregation during the HER process. Moreover, the strong coupling interactions between MC and M2C provide beneficial sites for both water dissociation and hydrogen desorption. This work highlights a new feasible strategy to explore efficient electrocatalysts via engineering on nanostructure and composition.

Abstract:An ecofriendly and robust strategy is developed to construct a self‐supported monolithic electrode composed of N‐doped carbon hybridized with bimetallic molybdenum‐tungsten carbide (Mox W2−x C) to form composite nanowires for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The hybridization of Mox W2−x C with N‐doped carbon enables effective regulation of the electrocatalytic performance of the composite nanowires, endowing abundant accessible active sites derived from N‐doping and Mox W2−x C incorporation, outstanding conductivity resulting from the N‐doped carbon matrix, and appropriate positioning of the d‐band center with a thermodynamically favorable hydrogen adsorption free energy (ΔG H*) for efficient hydrogen evolution catalysis, which forms a binder‐free 3D self‐supported monolithic electrode with accessible nanopores, desirable chemical compositions and stable composite structure. By modulating the Mo/W ratio, the optimal Mo1.33W0.67C @ NC nanowires on carbon cloth achieve a low overpotential (at a geometric current density of 10 mA cm−2) of 115 and 108 mV and a small Tafel slope of 58.5 and 55.4 mV dec−1 in acidic and alkaline environments, respectively, which can maintain 40 h of stable performance, outperforming most of the reported metal‐carbide‐based HER electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Multicomponent metal/N-doped porous carbon with controllable structure is considered to be a promising candidates for efficient oxygen evolution and hydrogen evolution reaction. Herein, Mo-Co-Fe-MOF was preapred by a simple hydrothermal method, followed by high-temperature pyrolysis treatment to obtain the Mo-Co-Fe/NC. Benefit from the advantages of hierarchical structure and multicomponent, the Mo-Co-Fe-1.0/NC shows an overpotential of 257 and 320 mV to achieve the current density of 10 and 100 mA cm-2 for OER in alkaline KOH solution, respectively. In addition, the Mo-Co-Fe-1.0/NC exhibits the accelerated reaction kinetics during HER and OER reactions. The results provide a new perspective for design and preparation as well as kinetic characteristics of efficient OER and HER catalysts, which is expected to be used in the field of energy storage and conversion.

Abstract:Numerous efforts have been made to search for high-efficiency and noble-metal-free electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In this work, molybdenum phosphide (MoP) nanoparticles encapsulated in P-doped carbon (MoP@PC) was synthesized through a facile one-step pyrolysis of the precursor, namely 3D cross-linked network structure of MoOx contained in polyaniline and phytic acid (MoOx@PANI-PA). The obtained MoP@PCelectrocatalyst retained the 3D structure and exhibits outstanding HER abilities with ultra-low overpotential (eta(10) = 69 mV), small Tafel slope (55 mV dec(-1)) and high stability in acid solution. This work offers a facile method to prepare cost-effective transition metal phosphide catalysts.
