Abstract:Experiments to control the alfalfa seed chalcid, Bruchophagus roddi Gussakovskii, were conducted in the field and greenhouse. Methods evaluated included cultural practices such as irrigation, cultivation and buring, and the application of insecticides to soil to destroy diapausing larvae overwintering in infested seeds in the soil. The effectiveness of insecticides applied to plants during bloom and seed set also was determined. It was shown that overwintering individuals are adversely affected by high soil moisture and by cultivation to bury infested seeds. The application of certain insecticides to the soil reduced over wintering populations when the soil surface was wet at the time of application. Insecticides were not effective when applied to dry soil. Insecticides applied to plants during the period of bloom and seed set were not highly effective in controlling chalcids that were active during this period. The use of insecticides during bloom is further complicated by the toxicity to honey bees and other pollinators of many of the materials.
