Abstract:This study investigates the use of ferrite and silver nanoparticle-reinforced silk microfiber composites for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding applications. Araldite epoxy resin served as the matrix material. Silver nanoparticles, extracted from lemon peels and silane-treated for enhanced bonding, and ferrite were used as fillers. Silk microfiber with a diameter of 6.4 microns was also incorporated. The study utilized triethylenetetramine as a catalyst and included a silane treatment process to enhance filler–matrix bonding. Silver nanoparticles, extracted from lemon peel, were treated with a 3 wt.% silane mixture, improving their interaction with the matrix. Ferrite fillers also underwent a similar silane treatment using a 90% ethanol solution and 3 wt.% 3-APTMS. The composite was fabricated using a stir casting method with a final curing process involving room temperature followed by post-curing at 110 °C. The mechanical properties of Composite E4, which contains 1 vol.% silane-treated silver nanoparticles and 1 vol.% ferrite, demonstrated superior performance with tensile strength of 141 MPa, flexural strength of 162 MPa, Shore-D hardness of 83, and izod impact of 6.9 J. Dielectric permittivity values for E4 were 6.1 at 8 GHz, 4.9 at 12 GHz, 3.9 at 16 GHz, and 2.7 at 18 GHz, reflecting improved polarization and energy management. EMI shielding effectiveness for E4 was notably high with absorption values of 16.5 dB at 8 GHz, 22.1 dB at 12 GHz, 33.1 dB at 16 GHz, and 36.4 dB at 18 GHz, and total shielding effectiveness of 33.1 dB at 8 GHz, 49.6 dB at 12 GHz, 66.2 dB at 16 GHz, and 71.7 dB at 18 GHz. Furthermore, the fiber-reinforced composite specimen E2 shows hydrophobic properties, and inclusion filler particle on composites such E3, E4, E5 shows hydrophilic properties. SEM analysis of Composite E4 revealed well-dispersed filler particles and enhanced interfacial bonding, contributing to its improved mechanical and EMI shielding performance.
