Abstract:Metallophthalocyanines (MPc, M=Fe or Co) have been investigated extensively as a typical type of transition metal macrocyclic catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, the understanding about ORR catalyzed by binuclear even heterodimetallic phthalocyanines in acidic condition is still not sufficient. Herein we synthesized two homodimetallicphthalocyanine (FePc-PcFe and CoPc-PcCo) and a heterodimetallic phthalocyanine (FePc-PcCo). The electrocatalytic activity of as-synthesized compounds were characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and rotating disk electrode (RDE). Generally, the binuclear metallophthalocyanines show higher activity than their monomeric analogues including FePc and CoPc. Also, the Fe compounds exhibit better catalytic performance than the Co phthalocyanines. However, interestingly the heterodimetallic phthalocyanine FePc-PcCo shows similar half-wave potential and ORR activity with FePc-PcFe, rather than CoPc-PcCo. This may be explained by XPS and XAS, which reveal a similar square-planar structure existed in FePc-PcCo and FePc-PcFe and a non-planar structure in CoPc-PcCo. Furthermore, the increasing of the ORR activity among those five catalysts is well in agreement with the descending LUMO energies in DFT calculations. A lower LUMO energy indicates a favorable adsorption of O-2, which in turn affects the ORR performance.

Abstract:Electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (NO3RR) offers a new pathway for low-temperature green ammonia synthesis. It is widely known that copper and its copper oxide catalysts are selective for NO3RRs, although the role played by their oxidation state in catalysis is not fully understood. Here, we found that in situ electrochemical reduction modulates the oxidation state of copper facilitating in situ loading of Cu2O active sites on island-like copper, and investigated the effect of cuprous oxide on nitrate reduction. We found that the improvement of ammonia yield (Faraday efficiency: 98.28%, selectivity: 96.6%) was closely related to the generation of Cu2O, which exceeded the performance of the state-of-the-art catalysts available today. The presence of a multilayer structure of the material was demonstrated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy combined with ion beam sputtering. Using operando Raman spectroscopy, we monitored the reduction process of the catalyst surface oxide species at the applied potential. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicated that the stable presence of Cu(I) effectively promotes the conversion of *HNOH to *HNHOH. We optimized the model building for DFT calculations and established relatively more reliable reaction paths, which provided a strong support for a further understanding of the reaction mechanism of NO3RR.

Abstract:In this work, the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) process on dual-metal-nitrogen-carbon (DM-N-C) catalysts by including two important factors (potential of zero charge and potential-dependent kinetics of O-O bond cleavage) from first-principle calculations is systematically investigated. Our results reveal that the origin for the high activity of dual-metal sites can be attributed to the fact that introducing a second metal site can facilitate the O-O bond cleavage in the key OOH* intermediate during ORR and meanwhile mitigate the *OH removal issue. Importantly, we define a descriptor called "antibonding center" that simplifies the evaluation of the kinetics. Based on the advanced approach used in this work, we demonstrate that several DM-N-C electrocatalysts including FeFeN6, FeCoN6, and CoZnN6 have high ORR activity consistent with previous experiments, and also predict MnCoN6 can be more highly stable and active for acidic ORR. This study demonstrates the advantage of the dual metal sites for the ORR in acidic electrolyte and highlights the significance of kinetics in the theoretical study of ORR electrocatalysts. Abstract:The development of Cu-based atomic dispersed catalysts with tailored coordination environments represents a significant step forward in enhancing the electrocatalytic reduction of nitrate to ammonia. By precisely modulating the electronic structures of Cu active centers, the binding strength of the *NO3 intermediates is successfully tuned, thereby substantially improving the catalytic activity toward electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (eNO3RR). This study reveals that the N4-coordinated Cu single-atom catalyst (Cu-SAC) exhibits superior performance due to its robust interaction with coordinating atoms. Notably, this optimized catalyst achieves a low limiting potential of -0.38 V, while the dual-atom system further reduces this value to -0.32 V, demonstrating exceptional activity. Detailed electronic structure analysis, including the examination of d-band centers, Bader charges, and projected density of states (PDOS), provides a comprehensive understanding of the origin of this high activity. Specifically, the high and concentrated density of states near the Fermi level plays a crucial role in facilitating the electrocatalytic nitrate reduction process. This work not only offers crucial insights into the underlying mechanisms of eNO3RR but also provides valuable guidelines for the rational design of highly efficient electrocatalysts for this important reaction.

Abstract:Transition metal nitride (TMN-) based materials have recently emerged as promising non-precious-metal-containing electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline media. However, the lack of fundamental understanding of the oxide surface has limited insights into structure–(re)activity relationships and rational catalyst design. Here we demonstrate how a well-defined TMN can dictate/control the as-formed oxide surface and the resulting ORR electrocatalytic activity. Structural characterization of MnN nanocuboids revealed that an electrocatalytically active Mn 3 O 4 shell grew epitaxially on the MnN core, with an expansive strain along the [010] direction to the surface Mn 3 O 4 . The strained Mn 3 O 4 shell on the MnN core exhibited an intrinsic activity that was over 300% higher than that of pure Mn 3 O 4 . A combined electrochemical and computational investigation indicated/suggested that the enhancement probably originates from a more hydroxylated oxide surface resulting from the expansive strain. This work establishes a clear and definitive atomistic picture of the nitride/oxide interface and provides a comprehensive mechanistic understanding of the structure–reactivity relationship in TMNs, critical for other catalytic interfaces for different electrochemical processes.

Abstract:A FeCo/DA@NC catalyst with the well-defined FeCoN6 moiety is customized through a novel and ultrafast Joule heating technique. This catalyst demonstrates superior oxygen reduction reaction activity and stability in an alkaline environment. The power density and charge-discharge cycling of znic-air batteries driven by FeCo/DA@NC also surpass those of Pt/C catalyst. The source of the excellent oxygen reduction reaction activity of FeCo/DA@NC originates from the significantly changed charge environment and 3d orbital spin state. These not only improve the bonding strength between active sites and oxygen-containing intermediates, but also provide spare reaction sites for oxygen-containing intermediates. Moreover, various in situ detection techniques reveal that the rate-determining step in the four-electron oxygen reduction reaction is *O2 protonation. This work provides strong support for the precise design and rapid preparation of bimetallic catalysts and opens up new ideas for understanding orbital interactions during oxygen reduction reactions.

Abstract:Cuprous oxide (Cu2O)-based catalysts present a promising activity for the electrochemical nitrate (NO3-) reduction to ammonia (eNO3RA), but the electrochemical instability of Cu+ species may lead to an unsatisfactory durability, hindering the exploration of the structure-performance relationship. Herein, we propose an efficient strategy to stabilize Cu+ through the incorporation of Cr4+ into the Cu2O matrix to construct a Cr4+-O-Cu+ network structure. In situ and quasi-in situ characterizations reveal that the Cu+ species are well maintained via the strong Cr4+-O-Cu+ interaction that inhibits the leaching of lattice oxygen. Importantly, in situ generated Cr3+-O-Cu+ from Cr4+-O-Cu+ is identified as a dual-active site for eNO3RA, wherein the Cu+ sites are responsible for the activation of N-containing intermediates, while the assisting Cr3+ centers serve as the electron-proton mediators for rapid water dissociation. Theoretical investigations further demonstrated that the metastable state Cr3+-O-Cu+ favors the conversion from the endoergic hydrogenation of the key *ON intermediate to an exoergic reaction in an ONH pathway, and facilitates the subsequent NH3 desorption with a low energy barrier. The superior eNO3RA with a maximum 91.6% Faradaic efficiency could also be coupled with anodic sulfion oxidation to achieve concurrent NH3 production and sulfur recovery with reduced energy input.

Abstract:Abstract Single-atom catalysts supported on solid substrates have inspired extensive interest, but the rational design of high-efficiency single-atom catalysts is still plagued by ambiguous structure determination of active sites and its local support effect. Here, we report hybrid single-atom catalysts by an axial coordination linkage of molecular cobalt phthalocyanine with carbon nanotubes for selective oxygen reduction reaction by screening from a series of metal phthalocyanines via preferential density-functional theory calculations. Different from conventional heterogeneous single-atom catalysts, the hybrid single-atom catalysts are proven to facilitate rational screening of target catalysts as well as understanding of its underlying oxygen reduction reaction mechanism due to its well-defined active site structure and clear coordination linkage in the hybrid single-atom catalysts. Consequently, the optimized Co hybrid single-atom catalysts exhibit improved 2e − oxygen reduction reaction performance compared to the corresponding homogeneous molecular catalyst in terms of activity and selectivity. When prepared as an air cathode in an air-breathing flow cell device, the optimized hybrid catalysts enable the oxygen reduction reaction at 300 mA cm −2 exhibiting a stable Faradaic efficiency exceeding 90% for 25 h.

Abstract:Electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (NO3RR) offers a cost-effective and environmentally friendly method to simultaneously yield valuable NH3and alleviate NO3-pollution under mild operating conditions.However, this complicated eight-electron reaction suffers from low selectivity and Faradaic efficiency, which highlight the importance of developing efficient catalysts, but still a critical challenge. Here, a theoretical screening is performed on transition metal-tetragonal carbon nitride (TM@T-C2N) as active and selective electrocatalysts for NO3RR, where detailed reaction mechanisms and activity origins are explored. In addition, five-step screening criteria and volcano plots enable fast prescreening among numerous candidates.We identify that V@T-C2N and Cr@T-C2N are promising candidates with low overpotentials and high selectivity and stability. In particular, a significant negative correlation between the adsorption strength ofnitrate and the Gibbs free energy for the last proton-electron coupling step (*NH2→*NH3) was existed, which is considerably advantaged to track the activity trend and reveal the origin of activity. This work provides theoretical insights into the rational design of TM-N4/C catalysts for NO3RR andpaves a valuable electrochemical screening framework for other multi-step reactions.

Abstract:Fe-N-C catalysts have been recognized as the most satisfactory candidates alternatively to Pt-based catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, fine-tailoring of their intrinsic ORR catalytic activity still remains a great challenge due to the inferior accessibility and intrinsic activity of FeN x moieties. Herein, one order of magnitude activity enhancement of pristine Fe-N-C through cooperating with nitrogen-doped carbon micro-flower is achieved. The axial coordination effect between Fe active center and nitrogen atoms in support can break the electronic distribution symmetry of FeN x moieties and induce the electron delocalization on Fe active center and the electron localization on N, respectively, which favor the adsorption behavior of *OH intermediate. As a result, the catalyst exhibits a remarkable half-wave potential of 0.9 V and a high kinetic current density of 74.04 mA cm −2 at 0.85 V. In addition, when utilized as a cathode catalyst of liquid Zn-air batteries (ZABs), it possesses excellent electrochemical performance, for example, a high open circuit voltage (OCV) and peak power density of 1.59 V and 170.09 mW cm −2 , respectively. This work provides a new understanding into the activity enhancement mechanism of Fe-N-C catalysts, and inspires electronic delocalization of active sites for adjusting catalytic activity.

Abstract:Heterostructure molecular catalysts have attracted significant attention for their distinctive catalytic activity in electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reactions. To investigate the intrinsic reaction mechanisms, the 3d-transition metal-phthalocyanine-based catalyst was systematically investigated. The results demonstrate that the heterostructure catalysts, composed of 3d-transition metal phthalocyanine and two-dimensional nitrogen-doped graphene, successfully modulates the electron configuration of the central metal atom and push its dz2 orbitals close to the Fermi level which can lower the energy barrier for the rate-limiting step in its electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CRR) and boost the overall reactions kinetics. For the first time, the mechanism of dual-site synergistic hydrogenation was revealed. Meanwhile, the descriptors related to metal atoms' inherent characteristics and catalytic properties exhibit a volcano relationship with the overpotential. This study provides a theoretical comprehending of the CRR mechanisms over heterostructure molecular catalysts, as well as innovative concepts for new molecular catalysts design.

Abstract:Abstract A standing puzzle in electrochemistry is that why the metal-nitrogen-carbon catalysts generally exhibit dramatic activity drop for oxygen reduction when traversing from alkaline to acid. Here, taking FeCo-N 6 -C double-atom catalyst as a model system and combining the ab initio molecular dynamics simulation and in situ surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy, we show that it is the significantly distinct interfacial double-layer structures, rather than the energetics of multiple reaction steps, that cause the pH-dependent oxygen reduction activity on metal-nitrogen-carbon catalysts. Specifically, the greatly disparate charge densities on electrode surfaces render different orientations of interfacial water under alkaline and acid oxygen reduction conditions, thereby affecting the formation of hydrogen bonds between the surface oxygenated intermediates and the interfacial water molecules, eventually controlling the kinetics of the proton-coupled electron transfer steps. The present findings may open new and feasible avenues for the design of advanced metal-nitrogen-carbon catalysts for proton exchange membrane fuel cells.

Abstract:The conversion of harmful industrial-emitted nitric oxide from emission into valuable NH3 through NO electrochemical reduction reaction (NORR) is a green and sustainable route, which can enable the nitrogen cycle. However, exploring efficient catalyst and unveiling relevant intrinsic mechanism remains a big challenge for improving the efficiency. Herein, we delve into the facet-dependent activity of Cu2O nanocrystal, unveiling for the superior performance of oxygen-vacancy-anchored Cu2O (111) with an unprecedented NH3 yield of 273.5 mu mol h-1 cm-2 and a Faradaic efficiency of 96.9% at -0.4 V vs RHE, which is significantly higher than that of Cu2O (100) and Cu2O (100)&(111). Cu2O (111) with abundant oxygen vacancies and hydroxyl groups facilitated the adsorption of NO and suppressed the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), insights supported by theoretical calculations and in-situ attenuated total reflectance-surface-enhanced IR absorption spectroscopy (ATR-SEIRAS). Further, leveraging Cu2O (111) as the cathode, a proof-of-concept Zn-NO battery delivered superior performance with a power density of 4.62 mW cm-2 and an NH3 yield of 308.0 mu g h-1 cm-2. This work not only elucidates the facet-dependent catalytic behaviors but also sets a new benchmark for NH3 synthesis and Zn-NO battery development, presenting a significant advancement in the sustainable and efficient conversion of nitric oxide.

Abstract:The development of efficient atomic electrocatalysts to resolve the activity and selectivity issues of the nitric oxide reduction reaction (NORR) has increasingly received more attention but is still challenging. The current research on the dual atomic NORR electrocatalyst is exclusively focused on TM atoms. Herein, we propose a novel mechanism of introducing a P/S element, which takes advantage of finite orbitals to active the transition metal (TM) atoms of dual atomic electrocatalysts for NORR. The finite orbitals can hinder the capture of the lone pair electrons of NO but modulate the electronic configurations of the neighboring TM and thus the "donation–backdonation" mechanism can be realized. Through large-scale first-principles calculations, the catalytic performance of a series of P/S–TM biatoms supported by the monolayer CN (P/S–TM@CN) is evaluated. According to a "four-step" screening strategy, P–Cu@CN and S–Ni@CN are successfully screened as promising catalysts with outstanding activity and high selectivity for direct NO-to-NH 3 conversion. Moreover, we identify Δ ε d–p as a valid descriptor to evaluate the adsorption of NO on such catalysts, allowing for reducing the number of catalytic candidates. Our work thus provides a new direction for the rational design of dual atomic electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Abstract Nonnoble metal catalysts are low-cost alternatives to Pt for the oxygen reduction reactions (ORRs), which have been studied for various applications in electrocatalytic systems. Among them, transition metal complexes, characterized by a redox-active single-metal-atom with biomimetic ligands, such as pyrolyzed cobalt–nitrogen–carbon (Co–N x /C), have attracted considerable attention. Therefore, we reported the ORR mechanism of pyrolyzed Vitamin B12 using operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy coupled with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, which enables operando monitoring of the oxygen binding site on the metal center. Our results revealed the preferential adsorption of oxygen at the Co 2+ center, with end-on coordination forming a Co 2+ -oxo species. Furthermore, the charge transfer mechanism between the catalyst and reactant enables further Co–O species formation. These experimental findings, corroborated with first-principle calculations, provide insight into metal active-site geometry and structural evolution during ORR, which could be used for developing material design strategies for high-performance electrocatalysts for fuel cell applications.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction is considered as a promising and sustainable method for ammonia synthesis. However, the selectivity and yield rate of ammonia are limited by the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction and the complex eight-electron transfer process. Herein, we developed a (FeCoNiCu)Ox/CeO 2 polymetallic oxide electrocatalyst for effective nitrate reduction to ammonia. The synergistic effects among the multiple elements in the electrocatalyst were clearly elucidated by comprehensive experiments. Specifically, Cu acted as the active site for reducing nitrate to nitrite, and Co facilitated the subsequent reduction of nitrite to ammonia, while Fe and Ni promoted water dissociation to provide protons. Furthermore, the incorporation of CeO 2 increased the active surface area of (FeCoNiCu)Ox, resulting in an improved ammonia yield rate to meet industrial demands. Consequently, the (FeCoNiCu)Ox/CeO 2 electrocatalyst achieved an ammonia current density of 382 mA cm −2 and a high ammonia yield rate of 30.3 mg h −1 cm −2 with a long-term stability. This work offers valuable insights for the future design of highly efficient multi-element electrocatalysts.
