Abstract:This work develops an L 1 adaptive control design for a nonlinear aeroservoelastic system despite general unmatched uncertainties. To our knowledge, the unmatched condition in that kind of controllers has yet received no attention in aeroservoelasticity. The considered model is a prototypical wing-flap section with flap inertial coupling and structural nonlinearities concurrently in pitch and plunge. Moreover, the operation in an unsteady flow based on the Theodorsen aerodynamic theory and encounter with external disturbance fields, such as atmospheric gusts, are included in the dynamics. To seek a full-state feedback solution, an optimal observer predicts non-physical states accounting for the lag effect of the unsteady aerodynamics. The compensated closed-loop system, comprised of the observer and a linear baseline controller augmented with the L 1 adaptive loop, undertakes to asymptotically drive the state vector trajectory to the equilibrium point. This attempt occurs under not only matched uncertainties but also uncertainties from the unmatched origins while fulfilling a set of theoretically provable, desirable performance bounds. The L 1 adaptive control signal is furnished through a felicitous filtering structure along with a reduced-order fast estimation loop consisting in an identifier and projection-type adaptation laws designed by Lyapunov’s method. Impacts of deviation in the system parameters on the closed-loop performance are explored alongside the nonlinearities and disturbances. Notwithstanding substantial uncertainties for a class of nonlinear plants exhibiting supercritical Hopf-bifurcations, simulation results have amply portrayed effective limit-cycle oscillation suppression and wing load alleviation in both pre- and post-flutter regimes.
