Abstract:Two forms of anomalies for chiral spinors living on submanifolds of the spacetime are obtained from the integrality theorem for immersions. The first form of the chiral anomaly is the usual for chiral spinors living on D-brane and O-plane intersections, the second form is exotic.

Abstract:Anomalies are a very powerful tool in constraining theories beyond the standard model. We give a pedagogical overview of some topics illustrating the important role played by spacetime anomalies in string theory. After discussing the general problem of anomaly cancellation in quantum field theory, the focus is set on the cancellation of anomalies in type-I string theory through the Green-Schwarz mechanism. The notion of anomaly inflow is also reviewed, as well as its application to the evaluation of D-brane anomalous couplings. Finally, we briefly comment on recent developments concerning the reformulation of anomalies in the language of category theory.

A study of anomalies using functional integration and perturbative calculations

Abstract:We present two lines of investigation involving anomalies. First, we review mechanisms behind the classical and quantum conservation of symmetries using functional integration. This discussion clarifies conditions for quantum violations, as acknowledged in chiral theories. Then, we elucidate the subject of gauge anomaly cancellation when all fields are quantized. Such an outcome requires gauge invariance of the bosonic measure, so our first object is proving this invariance within Fujikawa's approach. Second, we investigate anomalies in fermionic perturbative amplitudes using Implicit Regularization. The discussion of the single-axial triangle fundaments this analysis, bringing the elements necessary to approach the single-axial box. When organizing their mathematical structure, we highlight the role of traces involving the chiral matrix. Choosing a specific expression for them reflects on the position of symmetry violations, which has implications regarding the linearity of integration. Power counting and tensor structure imply the presence of surface terms related to momenta ambiguities. We present the results without computing these surface terms. In this neutral perspective, we explore possibilities achieved under different prescriptions.

Abstract:We use cobordism theory to analyse anomalies of finite non-abelian symmetries in 4 spacetime dimensions. By applying the method of 'anomaly interplay', which uses functoriality of cobordism and naturality of the η -invariant to relate anomalies in a group of interest to anomalies in other (finite or compact Lie) groups, we derive the anomaly for every representation in many examples motivated by flavour physics, including S 3 , A 4 , Q 8 , and SL(2 , F 3 ).

Anomalies of Non-Invertible Symmetries in (3+1)d

Abstract:Anomalies of global symmetries are important tools for understanding the dynamics of quantum systems. We investigate anomalies of non-invertible symmetries in 3+1d using 4+1d bulk topological quantum field theories given by Abelian two-form gauge theories, with a 0-form permutation symmetry. Gauging the 0-form symmetry gives the 4+1d "inflow" symmetry topological field theory for the non-invertible symmetry. We find a two levels of anomalies: (1) the bulk may fail to have an appropriate set of loop excitations which can condense to trivialize the boundary dynamics, and (2) the "Frobenius-Schur indicator" of the non-invertible symmetry (generalizing the Frobenius-Schur indicator of 1+1d fusion categories) may be incompatible with trivial boundary dynamics. As a consequence we derive conditions for non-invertible symmetries in 3+1d to be compatible with symmetric gapped phases, and invertible gapped phases. Along the way, we see that the defects characterizing $\mathbb{Z}_{4}$ ordinary symmetry host worldvolume theories with time-reversal symmetry $\mathsf{T}$ obeying the algebra $\mathsf{T}^{2}=C$ or $\mathsf{T}^{2}=(-1)^{F}C,$ with $C$ a unitary charge conjugation symmetry. We classify the anomalies of this symmetry algebra in 2+1d and further use these ideas to construct 2+1d topological orders with non-invertible time-reversal symmetry that permutes anyons. As a concrete realization of our general discussion, we construct new lattice Hamiltonian models in 3+1d with non-invertible symmetry, and constrain their dynamics.

Abstract:We study the model of an Abelian vector field with Chern–Simons term coupled to Higgs field in dimensions and quantize it canonically by using the Dirac–Bergmann algorithm. As an equivalent approach of rotational invariance in the theory, the Schwinger relation is established. We further show the exotic statistics for these configurations and establish a angular-momentum-anomaly connection.
Spinorial representation of submanifolds in a product of space forms

Abstract:We present a method giving a spinorial characterization of an immersion in a product of spaces of constant curvature. As a first application we obtain a proof using spinors of the fundamental theorem of immersion theory in that spaces. We also study special cases: we recover previously known results concerning immersions in $\mathbb{S}^2\times\mathbb{R}$ and we obtain new spinorial characterizations of immersions in $\mathbb{S}^2\times\mathbb{R}^2$ and in $\mathbb{H}^2\times\mathbb{R}.$ We then study the theory of $H=1/2$ surfaces in $\mathbb{H}^2\times\mathbb{R}$ using this spinorial approach, obtain new proofs of some of its fundamental results and give a direct relation with the theory of $H=1/2$ surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{1,2}.$

Discrete Gauge Anomalies and Instantons

Abstract:We revisit anomalous phases related to large gauge transformations, such as the Witten anomaly. The latter, known to plague $d=4$ $Sp(k)$ theories, is well-understood in terms of $\pi_4(Sp(k))=\mathbb{Z}_2$, but it also has an oblique relation to the instantons, labeled by $\pi_3(G)=\mathbb{Z}$, via the fermion zero mode counting. We revisit this relation and point out how $SU(N)$ theories escape an anomalous sign of the latter type, only thanks to the perturbative anomaly cancelation condition that restricts the chiral fermion spectrum. This leads to the question of what happens if the latter, more mundane anomaly is canceled by an inflow instead. After raising an open question about fractional D3 probe theories, we explore the simplest bottom-up model of such a kind, due to Witten and Yonekura, from which we find the relevant chiral theories to be free of such a disease despite the unrestricted chiral spectra. We close with a simple but often-overlooked observation about how fermionic zero modes enter physics differently between Euclidean and Lorentzian descriptions and point out a related issue in $d=3$.

Abstract:We discuss both the UV and IR origin of the one-loop triangle gauge anomalies for noncommutative nonabelian chiral gauge theories with fundamental, adjoint and bi-fundamental fermions for U(N) groups. We find that gauge anomalies only come from planar triangle diagrams, the non-planar triangle contributions giving rise to no breaking of the Ward identies. Generally speaking, theories with fundamental and bi-fundamental chiral matter are anomalous. Theories with only adjoint chiral fermions are anomaly free.

Abstract:Recently, Witten has proposed a mechanism for symmetry enhancement in $SO(32)$ heterotic string theory, where the singularity obtained by shrinking an instanton to zero size is resolved by the appearance of an $Sp(1)$ gauge symmetry. In this short letter, we consider spacetime constraints from anomaly cancellation in six dimensions and D-flatness and demonstrate a subtlety which arises in the moduli space when many instantons are shrunk to zero size.

Anomalous symmetries of quantum spin chains and a generalization of the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem

Abstract:For any locality-preserving action of a group $G$ on a quantum spin chain one can define an anomaly index taking values in the group cohomology of $G$. The anomaly index is a kinematic quantity, it does not depend on the Hamiltonian. We prove that a nonzero anomaly index prohibits any $G$-invariant Hamiltonian from having $G$-invariant gapped ground states. Lieb-Schultz-Mattis-type theorems are a special case of this result when $G$ involves translations. In the case when the symmetry group $G$ is a Lie group, we define an anomaly index which takes values in the differentiable group cohomology as defined by J.-L. Brylinski and prove a similar result.

Anomalies and Nonsupersymmetric D-Branes

Abstract:We revisit some aspects of D-brane theory from the point of view of anomalies. When the boundary condition on a worldsheet boson is flipped from Neumann to Dirichlet, worldsheet supersymmetry requires also reversing the sign of the boundary condition of the corresponding worldsheet fermion. This induces an anomaly which is a mod 2 anomaly in Type II superstring theory and a mod 8 anomaly in Type I superstring theory. The same anomaly also receives contributions from a sign in the sum over bulk spin structures (in Type IIA superstring theory), Chan-Paton factors of symplectic type (in Type I superstring theory), and Majorana fermions that propagate only on the worldsheet boundary. The need to cancel the anomaly accounts for many properties of supersymmetric and especially nonsupersymmetric D-branes in Type I and Type II superstring theory.

Ambient space and integration of the trace anomaly

Abstract:We use the ambient space construction, in which spacetime is mapped into a special lightcone of a higher dimensional manifold, to derive the integrable terms of the trace anomaly in even dimensions. We argue that the natural topological anomaly is the so-called $Q$-curvature, which, when projected from the ambient space, always comes with a Weyl covariant operator that should be adopted for the integration of the anomaly itself in the form of a nonlocal action. The use of the ambient space makes trasparent the fact that there are some new ambiguities in the integration of the anomaly, which we now understand geometrically from the ambient point of view. These ambiguities, which manifest themselves as undetermined parameters in the integrated nonlocal action, become more severe in dimensions $d\geq 6$ and do not seem to be related to a choice of the renormalization scheme.

Abstract:In the context of quantum field theory, an anomaly exists when a theory has a classical symmetry which is not a symmetry of the quantum theory. This short exposition aims at introducing a new point of view, which is that the proper setting for anomaly calculations is the `in-in', or closed-time path formulation of quantum field theory. There are also some new results for anomalies in the context of boundary value problems, and a new correction to the $a_5$ heat-kernel coefficient.

Abstract:Chiral symmetries in field theory are typically affected by an anomaly in the quantum theory. This anomaly emerges when one introduces an interaction with a Yang-Mills or gravitational background. Physical applications of this quantum effect have been traditionally connected to topological questions of the background field and the study of instantons. We show here how one can alternatively find situations of physical interest that only involve ordinary, but dynamical solutions of the background field equations. More precisely, we show that solutions to the Einstein (Maxwell) equations are able to trigger the chiral anomaly if and only if they admit a flux of gravitational (electromagnetic) radiation with net circular polarization. As a consequence, astrophysical systems that admit such radiation spontaneously generate a flux of particles with net helicity from the quantum vacuum.

Abstract:We reinvestigate the classic example of chiral anomaly in (1+1) dimensional spacetime. By reviewing the derivation of charge conservation with the semiclassical Boltzmann equation, we argue that chiral anomalies could emerge in (1+1) dimensions without Berry curvature corrections to the kinetic theory. The pivotal step depends only on the asymptotic behavior of the distribution function of the quasiparticle, and thus its dispersion relation, in the limit of $|\mathbf p|\to\pm\infty$ rather than the detailed functional form of the dispersion. We address two subjects motivated by this observation. One concerns reformulating (1+1) dimensional chiral anomaly using kinetic theory with the current algebra approach and the gradient expansion of the Dirac Lagrangian, adding a complementary perspective to the existing approaches. The other demonstrates the universality of chiral anomaly across various quasiparticle dispersions. For two-band models linear in the temporal derivative, with Fujikawa's method we show it is sufficient tohave a chirality-odd strictly monotonic dispersion in order to exhibit chiral anomaly.

Kodaira-Spencer Anomalies with Stora-Zumino Method

Abstract:Holomorphic diffeomorphism anomalies of $2\,n$-dimensional gravitational theories in Beltrami parametrisation (Kodaira-Spencer anomalies) are computed in the BRST framework, using an extension of the Stora-Zumino method. This method, which allows to compute anomalies in a very concise way, makes manifest the topological origin of anomalies. They have a clear geometric interpretation, since they are expressed in terms of Chern polynomials and Pontryagin invariants. The key ingredient is the formulation of the BRST transformations in terms of polyforms, whose total degree is the sum of the form degree and of the ghost number. This approach simplifies significantly the analysis available in literature and it allows to compute many other solutions. Namely, an anomaly, which was computed using different methods, is proved to be a consistent BRST anomaly, thereby supplementing a conclusion in a previous analysis.

Abstract:This ia a review of anomalies applied to a bottom-up approach to standard model and gravity. It is divided in two parts. The first consists in a review proper of anomalies in quantum field theories. Anomalies are analyzed according to three different methods: a perturbative one based on Feynman diagram, a non-perturbative one relying on the Schwinger-DeWitt approach and, third, the one hinging on the Atiyah-Singer family's index theorem. The three methods are applied both to chiral gauge anomalies and trace anomalies. The fundamental distinction that our presentation leads to is between obstructive (O) and non-obstructive (NO) anomalies. The former are tied to the non-existence of fermion propagators, which fatally maim the corresponding theory. In the second part we apply this analysis to the SM and various of its extensions immersed in a gravitational background, and find that they all are plagued by a residual chiral trace anomaly. To completely eliminate all kind of dangerous anomalies in SM-like theories we propose a somewhat unconventional scheme, and exemplify it by means of an explicit model. The latter is a left-right symmetric model. We embed it in a Weyl geometry to render it conformal invariant. We then deal with some of its quantum aspects, in particular its even (NO) trace anomalies and the means to preserve its confomal invariance at the quantum level. We briefly review renormalization and unitarity in the framework of similar models discussed in the existing literature. Finally we present a possible (conjectural) application of the model to describe the junction between cosmology and quantum field theory.

Anomalies of Generalized Symmetries from Solitonic Defects

Abstract:We propose the general idea that 't Hooft anomalies of generalized global symmetries can be understood in terms of the properties of solitonic defects, which generically are non-topological defects. The defining property of such defects is that they act as sources for background fields of generalized symmetries. 't Hooft anomalies arise when solitonic defects are charged under these generalized symmetries. We illustrate this idea for several kinds of anomalies in various spacetime dimensions. A systematic exploration is performed in 3d for 0-form, 1-form, and 2-group symmetries, whose 't Hooft anomalies are related to two special types of solitonic defects, namely vortex line defects and monopole operators. This analysis is supplemented with detailed computations of such anomalies in a large class of 3d gauge theories. Central to this computation is the determination of the gauge and 0-form charges of a variety of monopole operators: these involve standard gauge monopole operators, but also fractional gauge monopole operators, as well as monopole operators for 0-form symmetries. The charges of these monopole operators mainly receive contributions from Chern-Simons terms and fermions in the matter content. Along the way, we interpret the vanishing of the global gauge and ABJ anomalies, which are anomalies not captured by local anomaly polynomials, as the requirement that gauge monopole operators and mixed monopole operators for 0-form and gauge symmetries have non-fractional integer charges.
