Abstract:It is well-known that light bridges inside a sunspot produce small-scale plasma ejections and transient brightenings in the chromosphere, but the nature and origin of such phenomena are still unclear. Utilizing the high-spatial and high temporal resolution spectral data taken with the Fast Imaging Solar Spectrograph and the TiO 7057 A broadband filter images installed at the 1.6 meter New Solar Telescope of Big Bear Solar Observatory, we report arcsecond-scale chromospheric plasma ejections (1.7 arc) inside a light bridge. Interestingly, the ejections are found to be a manifestation of upwardly propagating shock waves as evidenced by the sawtooth patterns seen in the temporal-spectral plots of the Ca II 8542 A and H-alpha intensities. We also found a fine-scale photospheric pattern (1 arc) diverging with a speed of about 2 km/s two minutes before the plasma ejections, which seems to be a manifestation of magnetic flux emergence. As a response to the plasma ejections, the corona displayed small-scale transient brightenings. Based on our findings, we suggest that the shock waves can be excited by the local disturbance caused by magnetic reconnection between the emerging flux inside the light bridge and the adjacent umbral magnetic field. The disturbance generates slow-mode waves, which soon develop into shock waves, and manifest themselves as the arcsecond-scale plasma ejections. It also appears that the dissipation of mechanical energy in the shock waves can heat the local corona.

Abstract:Abstract Solar coronal plumes long seemed to possess a simple geometry supporting spatially coherent, stable outflow without significant fine structure. Recent high-resolution observations have challenged this picture by revealing numerous transient, small-scale, collimated outflows (“jetlets”) at the base of plumes. The dynamic filamentary structure of solar plumes above these outflows, and its relationship with the overall plume structure, have remained largely unexplored. We analyzed the statistics of continuously observed fine structure inside a single representative bright plume within a mid-latitude coronal hole during 2016 July 2–3. By applying advanced edge-enhancement and spatiotemporal analysis techniques to extended series of high-resolution images from the Solar Dynamics Observatory's Atmospheric Imaging Assembly, we determined that the plume was composed of numerous time-evolving filamentary substructures, referred to as “plumelets” in this paper, that accounted for most of the plume emission. The number of simultaneously identifiable plumelets was positively correlated with plume brightness, peaked in the fully formed plume, and remained saturated thereafter. The plumelets had transverse widths of 10 Mm and intermittently supported upwardly propagating periodic disturbances with phase speeds of 190–260 km s −1 and longitudinal wavelengths of 55–65 Mm. The characteristic frequency (≈ 3.3 mHz) is commensurate with that of solar p -modes. Oscillations in neighboring plumelets are uncorrelated, indicating that the waves could be driven by p -mode flows at spatial scales smaller than the plumelet separation. Multiple independent sources of outflow within a single coronal plume should impart significant fine structure to the solar wind that may be detectable by Parker Solar Probe and Solar Orbiter.

Abstract:The proximity of the Sun to the Earth allows detailed, spatially-resolved observations. The complexity of the solar atmosphere has not ceased to surprise us ever since the telescope, and in particular the spectrograph, has been used to observe the Sun. Details show up down to scales below an arc- second, while future high-resolution telescopes probably hold more surprises in store. Not only the high degree of structuring is surprising, but also the high temperature of the outer atmosphere (i.e. everything above the photosphere), reaching values in excess of 106K in the outermost regions. The atmospheric plasma is evidently non-radiatively heated by the dissipation of energy which is being delivered either actively or passively (or both) to the outer layers by the complex magnetic field which at the same time serves to confine the heated plasma. Observers structured the confusion contained in the observed phenomena by introducing names: chromosphere, coronal mass ejection, ephemeral region, facula, flare, granule, network, plage, pore, prominence, spicule, spot, umbra,… The list of terms is a long one indeed with new ones still being added. Continued observations revealed the solar cycle with its associated “butterfly diagram,” the differential rotation, etc. Observations of the “objects” which are described by these terms create the mental framework within which solar physicists communicate.

Abstract:En route to its ultimate rendezvous with Pluto, the New Horizons spacecraft passed through the magnetic and plasma environment of Jupiter in February 2007. Onboard instruments collected high-resolution images, spectroscopic data, and information about charged particles. The results have revealed unusual structure and variation in Jupiter's plasma and large plasmoids that travel down the magnetotail. Data on Jupiter's aurora provide details of the interaction with the solar wind, and a major volcanic eruption from the moon Io was observed during the encounter.

Abstract:Magnetic reconnection is widely believed to be the fundamental process in the solar atmosphere that underlies magnetic energy release and particle acceleration. This process is responsible for the onset of solar flares, coronal mass ejections, and other explosive events (e.g., jets). Here, we report direct imaging of a prolonged plasma/current sheet along with quasiperiodic magnetic reconnection in the solar corona using ultra-high-resolution observations from the 1.6 m Goode Solar Telescope at the Big Bear Solar Observatory and the Solar Dynamics Observatory/Atmospheric Imaging Assembly. The current sheet appeared near a null point in the fan–spine topology and persisted over an extended period (≈20 hr). The length and apparent width of the current sheet were about 6′′ and 2′′, respectively, and the plasma temperature was ≈10–20 MK. We observed quasiperiodic plasma inflows and outflows (bidirectional jets with plasmoids) at the reconnection site/current sheet. Furthermore, quasiperiodic reconnection at the long-lasting current sheet produced recurrent eruptions (small flares and jets) and contributed significantly to the recurrent impulsive heating of the active region. Direct imaging of a plasma/current sheet and recurrent null-point reconnection for such an extended period has not been reported previously. These unprecedented observations provide compelling evidence that supports the universal model for solar eruptions (i.e., the breakout model) and have implications for impulsive heating of active regions by recurrent reconnection near null points. The prolonged and sustained reconnection for about 20 hr at the breakout current sheet provides new insights into the dynamics and energy release processes in the solar corona.

Abstract:A joint campaign of several space-borne and ground-based observatories, such as the GREGOR solar telescope, the Extreme-ultraviolet Imaging Spectrometer (EIS), and the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (Hinode Observing Plan 381, 11-22 October 2019) was conducted to investigate the plasma $\beta$ in quiet sun regions. In this work, we focus on October 13, 17, and 19, 2019, to obtain the plasma $\beta$ at different heights through the solar atmosphere based on multi-height observational data. We obtained temperature, density and magnetic field estimates from the GREGOR High-resolution Fast Imager (HiFI), and Infrared Spectrograph (GRIS), IRIS, EIS and complementary data from SDO/AIA. Using observational data and models (e.g., FALC and PFSS), we determined the plasma $\beta$ in the photosphere, chromosphere, transition region and corona. The obtained plasma $\beta$ values lie inside the expected ranges through the solar atmosphere. However, at EIS and AIA coronal heights (from $1.03\ R_{\odot}$ to $1.20\ R_{\odot}$) plasma $\beta$ values appear in the limit defined by Gary (2001); such behavior was previously reported by Rodríguez Gómez et al. (2019). Additionally, we obtained the plasma $\beta$ in the solar photosphere at different optical depths from $\log\ \tau=-1.0$ to $\log\ \tau=-2.0$. These values decrease with optical depth. This work provides a complete picture of plasma $\beta$ in quiet sun regions through the solar atmosphere, which is a pre-requisite of a better understanding of the plasma dynamics at the base of the solar corona.

On-disk Observation of Bidirectionally Propagating Plasma Blobs Near the Reconnection Site of a Solar Eruption

Abstract:Current sheet is a commonly observed structure involved in solar eruptions. However, the physical properties of its fine structures during a solar eruption are rarely investigated. Here, we report an on-disk observation that displays 139 compact, circular or elliptic bright structures, presumably plasma blobs, propagating bidirectionally along a plasma sheet during a period of about 24 minutes around the peak time of an eruptive flare. From extreme ultraviolet images, we distinguish a plasma sheet connecting the flare loops and the erupting filament. The average width, duration, and projected velocities of these blobs are about 1.7±0.5 Mm, 73±54 s, and 190±81 km/s, respectively. The reconnection site rises with an average velocity of about 51 km/s. We have obtained the temporal variation of the blob number during the solar eruption, which is similar to that of the GOES X-ray flux. The observational results suggest that plasmoid instability plays an important role in the energy release process of solar eruptions.
Observing the Evolution of the Sun’s Global Coronal Magnetic Field over 8 Months

Abstract:The magnetic field in the Sun’s corona stores energy that can be released to heat plasma and drive solar eruptions. Measurements of the global coronal magnetic field have been limited to several snapshots. In this work, we present observations, using the Upgraded Coronal Multi-channel Polarimeter, that provide 114 magnetograms of the global corona above the solar limb spanning ~8 months. We determined the magnetic field distribution with altitude in the corona and monitored the evolution at different latitudes over multiple solar rotations. The field strength between 1.05 and 1.60 solar radii varies from <1 to ~20 gauss. A signature of active longitudes appears in the coronal magnetic field measurements. Coronal models are generally consistent with our observations, though they have larger discrepancies in high-latitude regions.

High-Resolution Three-Dimensional MHD Simulations of Plasmoid Formation in Solar Flares

Abstract:<p>In highly conducting plasmas, reconnecting current sheets are often unstable to the generation of plasmoids, small-scale magnetic structures that play an important role in facilitating the rapid release of magnetic energy and channeling that energy into accelerated particles. There is ample evidence for plasmoids throughout the heliosphere, from in situ observations of flux ropes in the solar wind and planetary magnetospheres to remote-sensing imaging of plasma &#8216;blobs&#8217; associated with explosive solar activity such as eruptive flares and coronal jets. Accurate models for plasmoid formation and dynamics must capture the large-scale self-organization responsible for forming the reconnecting current sheet. However, due to the computational difficulty inherent in the vast separation between the global and current sheet scales, previous numerical studies have typically explored configurations with either reduced dimensionality or pre-formed current sheets. We present new three-dimensional MHD studies of an eruptive flare in which the formation of the current sheet and subsequent reconnection and plasmoid formation are captured within a single simulation. We employ Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR) to selectively resolve fine-scale current sheet dynamics. Reconnection in the flare current sheet generates many plasmoids that exhibit highly complex, three-dimensional structure. We show how plasmoid formation and dynamics evolve through the course of the flare, especially in response to the weakening of the reconnection &#8220;guide field&#8221; linked to the global reduction of magnetic shear. We discuss implications of our results for particle acceleration and transport in eruptive flares as well as for observations by Parker Solar Probe and the forthcoming Solar Orbiter.</p>
Numerous Bidirectionally Propagating Plasma Blobs near the Reconnection Site of a Solar Eruption

Abstract:Current sheet is a common structure involved in solar eruptions. However, it is observed in minority of the events and the physical properties of its fine structures during a solar eruption are rarely investigated. Here, we report an on-disk observation that displays 108 compact, circular or elliptic bright structures, presumably plasma blobs, propagating bidirectionally along a flare current sheet during a period of $\sim$24 minutes. From extreme ultraviolet images, we have investigated the temporal variation of the blob number around the flare peak time. The current sheet connects the flare loops and the erupting filament. The width, duration, projected velocity, temperature, and density of these blobs are $\sim$1.7$\pm$0.5\,Mm, $\sim$79$\pm$57\,s, $\sim$191$\pm$81\,\kms, $\sim$10$^{6.4\pm0.1}$ K, and $\sim$10$^{10.1\pm0.3}$ cm$^{-3}$, respectively. The reconnection site rises with a velocity of $\leqslant$69\,\kms. The observational results suggest that plasmoid instability plays an important role in the energy release process of solar eruptions.

Abstract:We use the first publicly available data from the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope to track magnetic connections from the solar photosphere into the corona. We scrutinize relationships between chromospheric magnetism and bright chromospheric, transition region, and coronal plasmas. In 2022 June, the Visible Spectro-Polarimeter (ViSP) instrument targeted unipolar network within a decaying active region. ViSP acquired rastered scans with longitudinal Zeeman sensitivities of 0.25 Mx cm −2 (Fe i, 630.2 nm) and 0.5 Mx cm −2 (Ca ii, 854.2 nm). ViSP was operated in a "low" resolution mode (0.′′214 slit width, spectral resolution R ≈ 70,000 ) to produce polarization maps over a common area of 105′′ × 50′′. Data from the Solar Dynamics Observatory and Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph are combined to ask: Why is only a fraction of emerging flux filled with heated plasma? What is the elemental nature of the plasmas? No correlations were found between heated plasma and the properties of chromospheric magnetic fields derived from the weak field approximation, on scales below supergranules. Processes hidden from our observations control plasma heating. While improved magnetic measurements are needed, these data indicate that "the corona is a self-regulating forced system." Heating depends on the state of the corona, not simply on boundary conditions. Heating models based upon identifiable bipolar fields, including cool loops, tectonics, and observable magnetic reconnection, are refuted for these regions with unipolar chromospheric magnetic fields.

Abstract:As one of the most spectacular energy release events in the solar system, solar flares are generally powered by magnetic reconnection in the solar corona. As a result of the re-arrangement of magnetic field topology after the reconnection process, a series of new loop-like magnetic structures are often formed and are known as flare loops. A hot diffuse region, consisting of around 5-10 MK plasma, is also observed above the loops and is called a supra-arcade fan. Often, dark, tadpole-like structures are seen to descend through the bright supra-arcade fans. It remains unclear what role these so-called supra-arcade downflows (SADs) play in heating the flaring coronal plasma. Here we show a unique flare observation, where many SADs collide with the flare loops and strongly heat the loops to a temperature of 10-20 MK. Several of these interactions generate clear signatures of quasi-periodic enhancement in the full-Sun-integrated soft X-ray emission, providing an alternative interpretation for quasi-periodic pulsations that are commonly observed during solar and stellar flares.
