Abstract:We show that many spaces that look like the half~line~$\halfline=[0,\infty)$ have, under~$\CH$, a Čech-Stone-remainder that is homeomorphic to~$\Hstar$. We also show that $\CH$ is equivalent to the statement that all standard subcontinua of~$\Hstar$ are homeomorphic. The proofs use Model-theoretic tools like reduced products and elementary equivalence; rather than constructing homeomorphisms we show that the spaces in question have isomorphic bases for the closed sets.

Abstract:Magill proved that the remainders of two locally compact Hausdorff spaces in their StoneCech compactifications are homeomorphic if and only if the lattices of their Hausdorff compactifications are lattice isomorphic. His construction for compactifications are explicitely discussed through the partitions of their StoneCech compactifications. Partitions in a StoneCech compactification which lead to Hausdorff compactifications are characterized in this article. Embeddings of certain upper semi-lattices of compactifications into lattices of compactifications are constructed.

Abstract:An old question of A.V. Arhangel'skii asks if the Menger property of a Tychonoff space $X$ is preserved by homeomorphisms of its function space $C_p(X)$. We provide affirmative answer in the case of linear homeomorphisms. To this end, we develop a method of studying invariants of linear homeomorphisms of fuction spaces $C_p(X)$ by looking at the way $X$ is positioned in its (Čech-Stone) compactification.

Abstract:We deal with topological spaces homeomorphic to their respective squares. Primarily, we investigate the existence of large families of such spaces in some subclasses of compact metrizable spaces. As our main result we show that there is a family of size continuum of pairwise non-homeomorphic compact metrizable zero-dimensional spaces homeomorphic to their respective squares. This answers a question of W. J. Charatonik. We also discuss the situation in the classes of continua, Peano continua and absolute retracts.

Abstract:Let $\xx= x_1,\ldots,x_r$ denote a system of elements of a commutative ring $R$. For an $R$-module $M$ we investigate when $\xx$ is $M$-pro-regular resp. $M$-weakly pro-regular as generalizations of $M$-regular sequences. This is done in terms of Čech co-homology resp. homology, defined by $H^i(\check{C}_{\xx} \otimes_R \cdot)$ resp. by $H_i({\textrm{R}} \Hom_R(\check{C}_{\xx},\cdot)) \cong H_i(\Hom_R(\mathcal{L}_{\xx},\cdot))$, where $\check{C}_{\xx}$ denotes the Čech complex and $\mathcal{L}_{\xx}$ is a bounded free resolution of it as constructed in [17] resp. [16]. The property of $\xx$ being $M$-pro-regular resp. $M$-weakly pro-regular follows by the vanishing of certain Čech co-homology resp. homology modules, which is related to completions. This extends previously work by Greenlees and May (see) [5] and Lipman et al. (see [1]}). This contributes to a further understanding of Čech (co-)homology in the non-Noetherian case. As a technical tool we use one of Emmanouil's results (see [4]) about the inverse limits and its derived functor. As an application we prove a global variant of the results with an application to prisms in the sense of Bhatt and Scholze (see[3]).

Abstract:We show that an embedding of a fixed 0-dimensional compact space $K$ into the Čech--Stone remainder $\omega^*$ as a nowhere dense P-set is the unique generic limit, a special object in the category consisting of all continuous maps from $K$ to compact metric spaces. Using Fraïssé theory we get a few well know theorems about Čech--Stone remainder. We establish the following: -- an ultrametric space $K$ of weight $\kappa$ can be uniformly embedded into $\kappa^\kappa$ as a uniformly nowhere dense subset, -- every uniform homeomorphism of uniformly nowhere dense sets in $\kappa^\kappa$ can be extended to a uniform auto-homeomorphism of $\kappa^\kappa$, -- every uniformly nowhere dense set in $\kappa^\kappa$ is a uniform retract of $\kappa^\kappa$. If we assume that $\kappa$ is a weakly compact cardinal we get the counterpart of the above result without the uniformity assumption.

Abstract:A Polish space is not always homeomorphic to a computably presented Polish space. In this article, we examine degrees of non-computability of presenting homeomorphic copies of compact Polish spaces. We show that there exists a $0'$-computable low$_3$ compact Polish space which is not homeomorphic to a computable one, and that, for any natural number $n\geq 2$, there exists a Polish space $X_n$ such that exactly the high$_{n}$-degrees are required to present the homeomorphism type of $X_n$. We also show that no compact Polish space has a least presentation with respect to Turing reducibility. The first version of this article appeared in April 2020. A major update was made in September 2023, with improved proofs and results. This is the final version from January 2024, with more results on Čech homology groups.

Abstract:We investigate $^*$-homomorphisms with nuclear dimension equal to zero. In the framework of classification of $^*$-homo-morphisms, we characterise such maps as those that can be approximately factorised through an AF-algebra. Along the way, we obtain various obstructions for the total invariant of zero-dimensional morphisms and show that in the presence of real rank zero, nuclear dimension zero can be completely determined at the level of the total invariant. We end by characterising when unital embeddings of $\mathcal{Z}$ have nuclear dimension equal to zero.

Abstract:We give a definition for a rank-1 homeomorphism of a zero-dimensional Polish space X. We show that if a rank-1 homeomorphism of X satisfies a certain non-degeneracy condition, then it has trivial centralizer in the group of all homeomorphisms of X, i.e., it commutes only with its integral powers.

Abstract:In the study of the Stone-uCech remainder of the real line a detailed study of the Stone-uCech remainder of the space $\mathbb N\times [0,1]$, which we denote as $\mathbb M$, has often been utilized. Of course the real line can be covered by two closed sets that are each homeomorphic to $\mathbb M$. It is known that an autohomeomorphism of $\mathbb M^*$ induces an autohomeomorphism of $\mathbb N^*$. We prove that it is consistent with there being non-trivial autohomeomorphism of $\mathbb N^*$ that those induced by autohomeomorphisms of $\mathbb M^*$ are trivial.

Abstract:In [11], Mioduszewski characterized inverse sequences of polyhedra for which their inverse limits are homeomorphic. In this article, we obtain a more general characterization: we characterize inverse sequences of arbitrary compact metric spaces and continuous single-valued functions for which their inverse limits are homeomorphic. In our approach, set-valued functions are used instead of continuous single-valued functions in almost commutative diagrams. Using this characterization we give an alternative proof that the Brouwer-Janiszewski-Knaster continuum and the pseudo-arc are circle-like continua.

Effective zero-cycles and the Bloch-Beilinson filtration

Abstract:A conjecture of Voisin states that two points on a smooth projective complex variety whose algebra of holomorphic forms is generated in degree 2 are rationally equivalent to each other if and only if their difference lies in the third step of the Bloch-Beilinson filtration. In this note, we formulate a generalization that allows for rational equivalence of effective zero-cycles of higher degree, at the expense of looking deeper in the Bloch-Beilinson filtration. In the first half, we provide evidence in support of this conjecture in the case of abelian varieties and projective hyper-Kähler manifolds. Notably, we give explicit criteria for rational equivalence of effective zero-cycles on moduli spaces of semistable sheaves on K3 surfaces, generalizing that of Marian-Zhao. In the second half, in an effort to explain our main conjecture, we formulate a second conjecture predicting when the diagonal of a smooth projective variety belongs to a subalgebra of the ring of correspondences generated in low degree.

Abstract:All spaces are assumed to be separable and metrizable. Ostrovsky showed that every zero-dimensional Borel space is $\sigma$-homogeneous. Inspired by this theorem, we obtain the following results: assuming $\mathsf{AD}$, every zero-dimensional space is $\sigma$-homogeneous; assuming $\mathsf{AC}$, there exists a zero-dimensional space that is not $\sigma$-homogeneous; assuming $\mathsf{V=L}$, there exists a coanalytic zero-dimensional space that is not $\sigma$-homogeneous. Along the way, we introduce two notions of hereditary rigidity, and give alternative proofs of results of van Engelen, Miller and Steel. It is an open problem whether every analytic zero-dimensional space is $\sigma$-homogeneous.

Abstract:We prove that every homomorphism $\mathcal{O}^E_\zeta\to\mathcal{O}^F_\zeta$, with $E$ and $F$ Banach spaces and $\zeta\in\mathbb{C}^m$, is induced by a $\mathop{\mathrm{Hom}}(E,F)$-valued holomorphic germ, provided that $1\leq m<\infty$. A similar structure theorem is obtained for the homomorphisms of type $\mathcal{O}^E_\zeta\to\mathcal{S}_\zeta$, where $\mathcal{S}_\zeta$ is a stalk of a coherent sheaf of positive $\mathfrak{m}_\zeta$-depth. We later extend these results to sheaf homomorphisms, obtaining a condition on coherent sheaves which guarantees the sheaf to be equipped with a unique analytic structure in the sense of Lempert-Patyi.

Abstract:We prove that the conjugacy relation of transitive homeomorphisms on the Hilbert cube (resp. on the Cantor space) is Borel bireducible with the universal orbit relation induced by a Polish group (resp. by the group $S_\infty$). We also prove that conjugacy relation of minimal homeomorphisms on tame cantoroids (excluding the Cantor space) is Borel and thus this class of spaces is not suitable for identifying the complexity of conjugacy of minimal systems.

Uniform homeomorphisms between spheres of unitarily invariant ideals

Abstract:The classical Mazur map is a uniform homeomorphism between the unit spheres of $L_p$ spaces, and the version for noncommutative $L_p$ spaces has the same property. Odell and Schlumprecht used two types of generalized Mazur maps to prove that the unit sphere of a Banach space $X$ with an unconditional basis is uniformly homeomorphic to the unit sphere of a Hilbert space if and only if $X$ does not contain $\ell_\infty^n$'s uniformly. We prove a noncommutative version of this result, yielding uniform homeomorphisms between spheres of unitarily invariant ideals, and along the way we study noncommutative versions of the aforementioned generalized Mazur maps: one based on the $p$-convexification procedure, and one based on the minimization of quantum relative entropy. The main result provides new examples of Banach spaces whose unit spheres are uniformly homeomorphic to the unit sphere of a Hilbert space (in fact, spaces with the property (H) of Kasparov and Yu).

A note on Stone-Čech compactification in ZFA

Abstract:Working in Zermelo-Fraenkel Set Theory with Atoms over an $\omega$-categorical $\omega$-stable structure, we show how \emph{infinite} constructions over definable sets can be encoded as \emph{finite} constructions over the Stone-Čech compactification of the sets. In particular, we show that for a definable set $X$ with its Stone-Čech compactification $\overline{X}$ the following holds: a) the powerset $\mathcal{P}(X)$ of $X$ is isomorphic to the finite-powerset $\mathcal{P}_{\textit{fin}}(\overline{X})$ of $\overline{X}$, b) the vector space $\mathcal{K}^X$ over a field $\mathcal{K}$ is the free vector space $F_{\mathcal{K}}(\overline{X})$ on $\overline{X}$ over $\mathcal{K}$, c) every measure on $X$ is tantamount to a \emph{discrete} measure on $\overline{X}$. Moreover, we prove that the Stone-Čech compactification of a definable set is still definable, which allows us to obtain some results about equivalence of certain formalizations of register machines.
