Abstract:In this paper a new class of isospectral graphs is presented. These graphs are isospectral with respect to both the normalized Laplacian on the discrete graph and the standard differential Laplacian on the corresponding metric graph. The new class of graphs is obtained by gluing together subgraphs with the Steklov maps possessing special properties. It turns out that isospectrality is related to the degeneracy of the Steklov eigenvalues.

Abstract:Quantum graphs have attracted attention from mathematicians for some time. A quantum graph is defined by having a Laplacian on each edge of a metric graph and imposing boundary conditions at the vertices to get an eigenvalue problem. A problem studying such quantum graphs is that the spectrum is timeconsuming to compute by hand and the inverse problem of finding a quantum graph having a specified spectrum is difficult. We solve the forward problem, to find the eigenvalues, using a previously developed computer program. We obtain all eigenvalues analytically for not too big graphs that have rationally dependent edges. We solve the inverse problem using "spectrally grown graphs". The spectrally grown graphs are evolved from a starting (parent) graph such that the child graphs have eigenvalues are close to some criterion. Our experiments show that the method works and we can usually find graphs having spectra which are numerically close to a prescribed spectrum. There are naturally exceptions, such as if no graph has the prescribed spectrum. The selection criteria (goals) strongly influence the shape of the evolved graphs. Our experiments allows us to make new conjectures concerning the spectra of quantum graphs. Abstract:In the broad range of studies related to quantum graphs, quantum graph spectra appear as a topic of special interest. They are important in the context of diffusion type problems posed on metric graphs. Theoretical findings suggest that quantum graph eigenvalues can be found as the solutions of a nonlinear eigenvalue problem, and in the special case of equilateral graphs, even as the solutions of a linear eigenvalue problem on the underlying combinatorial graph. The latter, remarkable relation to combinatorial graph spectra will be exploited to derive a solver for the general, non-equilateral case. Eigenvalue estimates from equilateral approximations will be applied as initial guesses in a Newton-trace iteration to solve the nonlinear eigenvalue problem.

Abstract:In this paper, we give a method to characterize graphs determined by their adjacency spectrum. At first, we give two parameters Π1(G) and Π2(G), which are related to coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of graph G. All connected graphs with Π1(G)∈{1,0,−1,−2,−3} and Π2(G)∈{0,−1,−2,−3} are characterized. Some interesting properties of Π1(G) and Π2(G) are also given. We then find the necessary and sufficient conditions for two classes of graphs to be determined by their adjacency spectrum.
Use of harmonic inversion techniques in semiclassical quantization and analysis of quantum spectra

Abstract:Harmonic inversion is introduced as a powerful tool for both the analysis of quantum spectra and semiclassical periodic orbit quantization. The method allows one to circumvent the uncertainty principle of the conventional Fourier transform and to extract dynamical information from quantum spectra which has been unattainable before, such as bifurcations of orbits, the uncovering of hidden ghost orbits in complex phase space, and the direct observation of symmetry breaking effects. The method also solves the fundamental convergence problems in semiclassical periodic orbit theories – for both the Berry–Tabor formula and Gutzwiller's trace formula – and can therefore be applied as a novel technique for periodic orbit quantization, i.e., to calculate semiclassical eigenenergies from afinite set of classical periodic orbits. The advantage of periodic orbit quantization by harmonic inversion is the universality and wide applicability of the method, which will be demonstrated in this work for various open and bound systems with underlying regular, chaotic, and even mixed classical dynamics. The efficiency of the method is increased, i.e., the number of orbits required for periodic orbit quantization is reduced, when the harmonic inversion technique is generalized to the analysis of cross-correlated periodic orbit sums. The method provides not only the eigenenergies and resonances of systems but also allows the semiclassical calculation of diagonal matrix elements and, e.g., for atoms in external fields, individual non-diagonal transition strengths. Furthermore, it is possible to include higher-order terms of the ℏ expanded periodic orbit sum to obtain semiclassical spectra beyond the Gutzwiller and Berry–Tabor approximation.
Quotients of graph operators by symmetry representations

Abstract:A finite dimensional operator that commutes with some symmetry group admits quotient operators, which are determined by the choice of associated representation. Taking the quotient isolates the part of the spectrum supporting the chosen representation and reduces the complexity of the spectral problem. Yet, such a quotient operator is not uniquely defined. Here we present a computationally simple way of choosing a special basis for the space of intertwiners, allowing us to construct a quotient that reflects the structure of the original operator. This quotient construction generalizes previous definitions for discrete graphs, which either dealt with restricted group actions or only with the trivial representation. We also extend the method to quantum graphs, which simplifies previous constructions within this context, answers an open question regarding self-adjointness and offers alternative viewpoints in terms of a scattering approach. Applications to isospectrality are discussed, together with numerous examples and comparisons with previous results.

Isospectral Reductions of Dynamical Networks

Abstract:We present a general and flexible procedure which allows for the reduction (or expansion) of any dynamical network while preserving the spectrum of the network's adjacency matrix. Computationally, this process is simple and easily implemented for the analysis of any network. Moreover, it is possible to isospectrally reduce a network with respect to any network characteristic including centrality, betweenness, etc. This procedure also establishes new equivalence relations which partition all dynamical networks into spectrally equivalent classes. Here, we present general facts regarding isospectral network transformations which we then demonstrate in simple examples. Overall, our procedure introduces new possibilities for the analysis of networks in ways that are easily visualized.

Edge Laplacians and Edge Poisson Transforms for Graphs

Abstract:For a finite graph, we establish natural isomorphisms between eigenspaces of a Laplace operator acting on functions on the edges and eigenspaces of a transfer operator acting on functions on one-sided infinite non-backtracking paths. Interpreting the transfer operator as a classical dynamical system and the Laplace operator as its quantization, this result can be viewed as a quantum-classical correspondence. In contrast to previously established quantum-classical correspondences for the vertex Laplacian which exclude certain exceptional spectral parameters, our correspondence is valid for all parameters. This allows us to relate certain spectral quantities to topological properties of the graph such as the cyclomatic number and the 2-colorability. The quantum-classical correspondence for the edge Laplacian is induced by an edge Poisson transform on the universal covering of the graph which is a tree of bounded degree. In the special case of regular trees, we relate both the vertex and the edge Poisson transform to the representation theory of the automorphism group of the tree and study associated operator valued Hecke algebras.

Finite pseudo orbit expansions for spectral quantities of quantum graphs

Abstract:We investigate spectral quantities of quantum graphs by expanding them as sums over pseudo orbits, sets of periodic orbits. Only a finite collection of pseudo orbits which are irreducible and where the total number of bonds is less than or equal to the number of bonds of the graph appear, analogous to a cut off at half the Heisenberg time. The calculation simplifies previous approaches to pseudo orbit expansions on graphs. We formulate coefficients of the characteristic polynomial and derive a secular equation in terms of the irreducible pseudo orbits. From the secular equation, whose roots provide the graph spectrum, the zeta function is derived using the argument principle. The spectral zeta function enables quantities, such as the spectral determinant and vacuum energy, to be obtained directly as finite expansions over the set of short irreducible pseudo orbits.

Accelerating Spectral Clustering on Quantum and Analog Platforms

Abstract:We introduce a novel hybrid quantum-analog algorithm to perform graph clustering that exploits connections between the evolution of dynamical systems on graphs and the underlying graph spectra. This approach constitutes a new class of algorithms that combine emerging quantum and analog platforms to accelerate computations. Our hybrid algorithm is equivalent to spectral clustering and has a computational complexity of $O(N)$, where $N$ is the number of nodes in the graph, compared to $O(N^3)$ scaling on classical computing platforms. The proposed method employs the dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) framework on the data generated by Schrödinger dynamics that evolves on the manifold induced by the graph Laplacian. In particular, we prove and demonstrate that one can extract the eigenvalues and scaled eigenvectors of the normalized graph Laplacian by evolving Schrödinger dynamics on quantum computers followed by DMD computations on analog devices.

Abstract:Non-hermiticity presents a vast newly opened territory that harbors new physics and applications such as lasing and sensing. However, only non-Hermitian systems with real eigenenergies are stable, and great efforts have been devoted in designing them through enforcing parity-time (PT) symmetry. In this work, we exploit a lesser-known dynamical mechanism for enforcing real-spectra, and develop a comprehensive and versatile approach for designing new classes of parent Hamiltonians with real spectra. Our design approach is based on a new electrostatics analogy for modified non-Hermitian bulk-boundary correspondence, where electrostatic charge corresponds to density of states and electric fields correspond to complex spectral flow. As such, Hamiltonians of any desired spectra and state localization profile can be reverse-engineered, particularly those without any guiding symmetry principles. By recasting the diagonalization of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians as a Poisson boundary value problem, our electrostatics analogy also transcends the gain/loss-induced compounding of floating-point errors in traditional numerical methods, thereby allowing access to far larger system sizes.

Abstract:We consider finite graphs whose vertexes are supersingular elliptic curves, possibly with level structure, and edges are isogenies. They can be applied to the study of modular forms and to isogeny based cryptography. The main result of this paper is an upper bound on the modules of the eigenvalues of their adjacency matrices, which in particular implies that these graphs are Ramanujan. We also study the asymptotic distribution of the eigenvalues of the adjacency matrices, the number of connected components, the automorphisms of the graphs, and the connection between the graphs and modular forms.

Signature change by an isomorphism of spectral triples

Abstract:We present a duality between spectral triples and pseudo-Riemannian spectral triples. This duality is based on the fundamental connection between twists and Krein products. A concept of isomorphism of spectral triples is introduced, transforming one spectral triple to the dual one. In the case of even-dimensional manifolds, we show how this implements a signature change through the parity operator, given by the twist itself. The signature change transformation is then only parametrized by one operator, given by the unitary that implements the twist. This unitary is a central ingredient of the approach, being directly connected to the Krein product, the twist and the parity operator that implement the signature change.

Spectral Determinants of Almost Equilateral Quantum Graphs

Abstract:Kirchoff's matrix tree theorem of 1847 connects the number of spanning trees of a graph to the spectral determinant of the discrete Laplacian [6]. Recently an analogue was obtained for quantum graphs relating the number of spanning trees to the spectral determinant of a Laplacian acting on functions on a metric graph with standard (Neumann-like) vertex conditions [11]. This result holds for quantum graphs where the edge lengths are close together. A quantum graph where the edge lengths are all equal is called equilateral. Here we consider equilateral graphs where we perturb the length of a single edge (almost equilateral graphs). We analyze the spectral determinant of almost equilateral complete graphs, complete bipartite graphs, and circulant graphs. This provides a measure of how fast the spectral determinant changes with respect to changes in an edge length. We apply these results to estimate the width of a window of edge lengths where the connection between the number of spanning trees and the spectral determinant can be observed. The results suggest the connection holds for a much wider window of edge lengths than is required in [11].

Abstract:This work provides a necessary and sufficient condition for a symbolic dynamical system to admit a sequence of periodic approximations in the Hausdorff topology. The key result proved and applied here uses graphs that are called De Bruijn graphs, Rauzy graphs, or Anderson–Putnam complex, depending on the community. Combining this with a previous result, the present work justifies rigorously the accuracy and reliability of algorithmic methods used to compute numerically the spectra of a large class of self-adjoint operators. The so-called Hamiltonians describe the effective dynamic of a quantum particle in aperiodic media. No restrictions on the structure of these operators other than general regularity assumptions are imposed. In particular, nearest-neighbor correlation is not necessary. Examples for the Fibonacci and the Golay–Rudin–Shapiro sequences are explicitly provided illustrating this discussion. While the first sequence has been thoroughly studied by physicists and mathematicians alike, a shroud of mystery still surrounds the latter when it comes to spectral properties. In light of this, the present paper gives a new result here that might help uncovering a solution.

Abstract:We establish new results on the spectra and pseudo-spectra of tridiagonal $k$-Toeplitz operators and matrices. Abstract:One interesting phenomenon of graphene is the presence of the conical singularity or Dirac points. Using the quantum graph model, we show that there exist three classes of possible Dirac points for all of the periodic quantum graphs associated with Archimedean tilings, when the potentials are identical and even. They occur at the periodic eigenvalues, anti-periodic eigenvalues and other double eigenvalues of the dispersion relations respectively. We also characterize their associated potentials. Moreover, we show that there are no other possible Dirac points. Finally, we solve an inverse spectral problem for the potential, given the knowledge of the pure point and absolutely continuous spectra.
