Abstract:One of the earliest results in enumerative combinatorial geometry is the following theorem of de Bruijn and Erdős: Every set of points $E$ in a projective plane determines at least $|E|$ lines, unless all the points are contained in a line. Motzkin and others extended the result to higher dimensions, who showed that every set of points $E$ in a projective space determines at least $|E|$ hyperplanes, unless all the points are contained in a hyperplane. Let $E$ be a spanning subset of a $d$-dimensional vector space. We show that, in the partially ordered set of subspaces spanned by subsets of $E$, there are at least as many $(d-k)$-dimensional subspaces as there are $k$-dimensional subspaces, for every $k$ at most $d/2$. This confirms the "top-heavy" conjecture of Dowling and Wilson for all matroids realizable over some field. The proof relies on the decomposition theorem package for $\ell$-adic intersection complexes.

Abstract:Hausdorff $\Phi$-dimension is a notion of Hausdorff dimension developed using a restricted class of coverings of a set. We introduce a constructive analogue of $\Phi$-dimension using the notion of constructive $\Phi$-$s$-supergales. We prove a Point-to-Set Principle for $\Phi$-dimension, through which we get Point-to-Set Principles for Hausdorff dimension, continued-fraction dimension and dimension of Cantor coverings as special cases. We also provide a Kolmogorov complexity characterization of constructive $\Phi$-dimension. A class of covering sets $\Phi$ is said to be "faithful" to Hausdorff dimension if the $\Phi$-dimension and Hausdorff dimension coincide for every set. Similarly, $\Phi$ is said to be "faithful" to constructive dimension if the constructive $\Phi$-dimension and constructive dimension coincide for every set. Using the Point-to-Set Principle for Cantor coverings and a new technique for the construction of sequences satisfying a certain Kolmogorov complexity condition, we show that the notions of ``faithfulness'' of Cantor coverings at the Hausdorff and constructive levels are equivalent. We adapt the result by Albeverio, Ivanenko, Lebid, and Torbin to derive the necessary and sufficient conditions for the constructive dimension faithfulness of the coverings generated by the Cantor series expansion, based on the terms of the expansion.

Abstract:One of our main goals in this paper is to understand the behavior of limit sets of a diverging sequence of Schottky groups in the group of isometries of the N-dimensional hyperbolic space. This leads us to a generalization of a classical theorem of Bowen on variations of Hausdorff dimension of limit sets; and to a method of transforming a diverging sequence of Schottky groups into an almost converging sequence in the group of isometries of the infinite dimensional hyperbolic space. Our results apply in particular to an example of McMullen and generalize a previous work by Mehmeti and Dang.

Dimension of Diophantine approximation and applications

Abstract:In this paper we construct a new family of sets via Diophantine approximation, in which the classical examples are endpoints. Our first application is on their Hausdorff dimension. We show a recent result of Ren and Wang, known sharp on orthogonal projections in the plane, is also sharp on $A+cB$, $c\in C$, thus completely settle this ABC sum-product problem. Higher dimensional examples are also discussed. In addition to Hausdorff dimension, we also consider Fourier dimension. In particular, now for every $0\leq t\leq s\leq 1$ we have an explicit construction in $\mathbb{R}$ of Hausdorff dimension $s$ and Fourier dimension $t$, together with a measure $\mu$ that captures both dimensions. In the end we provide a perspective of Knapp's example and treat our Diophantine approximation as its analog in $\mathbb{R}$, that naturally leads to the sharpness of Mockenhaupt-Mitsis-Bak-Seeger Fourier restriction theorem. These are alternatives of recent examples due to Fraser-Hambrook-Ryou. In particular, to deal with the non-geometric case we construct measures of "Hausdorff dimension" $a$ and Fourier dimension $b$, even if $a<b$. This clarifies some difference between sets and measures.

Dimension bounds on classes of interval orders with restricted representation

Abstract:Representations of interval orders are, in general, may use an arbitrary set of interval lengths. We can define subclasses of interval orders by restricting the allowable lengths of intervals. Motivated by a recent paper of Keller, Trenk, and Young, we study the dimension of posets in some of these subclasses. Among other results, we answer several of their questions, and we simplify the proof of one of their main results.

Abstract:Let A be a subset of the real line. We study the fractal dimensions of the k-fold iterated sumsets kA, defined as kA = A+...+A (k times). We show that for any non-decreasing sequence {a_k} taking values in [0,1], there exists a compact set A such that kA has Hausdorff dimension a_k for all k. We also show how to control various kinds of dimension simultaneously for families of iterated sumsets. These results are in stark contrast to the Plunnecke-Rusza inequalities in additive combinatorics. However, for lower box-counting dimension, the analogue of the Plunnecke-Rusza inequalities does hold.

Typical dimension and absolute continuity for classes of dynamically defined measures, Part II : exposition and extensions

Abstract:This paper is partly an exposition, and partly an extension of our work [1] to the multiparameter case. We consider certain classes of parametrized dynamically defined measures. These are push-forwards, under the natural projection, of ergodic measures for parametrized families of smooth iterated function systems (IFS) on the line. Under some assumptions, most crucially, a transversality condition, we obtain formulas for the Hausdorff dimension of the measure and absolute continuity for almost every parameter in the appropriate parameter region. The main novelty of [1] and the present paper is that not only the IFS, but also the ergodic measure in the symbolic space, whose push-forward we consider, depends on the parameter. This includes many interesting families of measures, in particular, invariant measures for IFS's with place-dependent probabilities and natural (equilibrium) measures for smooth IFS's. One of the goals of this paper is to present an exposition of [1] in a more reader-friendly way, emphasizing the ideas and proof strategies, but omitting the more technical parts. This exposition/survey is based in part on the series of lectures by Károly Simon at the Summer School "Dynamics and Fractals" in 2023 at the Banach Center, Warsaw. The main new feature, compared to [1], is that we consider multi-parameter families; in other words, the set of parameters is allowed to be multi-dimensional. This broadens the scope of applications. A new application considered here is to a class of Furstenberg-like measures.

Fréchet Means in Infinite Dimensions

Abstract:While there exists a well-developed asymptotic theory of Fréchet means of random variables taking values in a general "finite-dimensional" metric space, there are only a few known results in which the random variables can take values in an "infinite-dimensional" metric space. Presently, show that a natural setting for the study of probabilistic aspects of Fréchet means is that of metric spaces which admit a suitably powerful notion of "weak convergence". This allows us to recover, strengthen, and generalize virtually all known asymptotic theory for Fréchet means; in particular, we expand the possible geometric settings where such theorems can be applied, we reduce the moment assumptions to the provably minimal possible, and we completely remove assumption about uniqueness of the Fréchet mean. We also analyze many examples.

Abstract:Using McMullen's Hausdorff dimension algorithm, we study numerically the dimension of the limit set of groups generated by reflections along three geodesics on the hyperbolic plane. Varying these geodesics, we found four minima in the two-dimensional parameter space, leading to a rigorous result why this must be so. Extending the algorithm to compute the limit measure and its moments, we study orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle associated with this measure. Several numerical observations on certain coefficients related to these moments and on the zeros of the polynomials are discussed.

Abstract:The Erdős-Anning theorem states that every point set in the Euclidean plane with integer distances must be either collinear or finite. More strongly, for any (non-degenerate) triangle of diameter $\delta$, at most $O(\delta^2)$ points can have integer distances from all three triangle vertices. We prove the same results for any strictly convex distance function on the plane, and analogous results for every two-dimensional complete Riemannian manifold of bounded genus and for geodesic distance on the boundary of every three-dimensional Euclidean convex set. As a consequence, we resolve a 1983 question of Richard Guy on the equilateral dimension of Riemannian manifolds. Our proofs are based on the properties of additively weighted Voronoi diagrams of these distances.

Abstract:We develop foundational tools for classifying the extreme valid functions for the k-dimensional infinite group problem. In particular, (1) we present the general regular solution to Cauchy's additive functional equation on bounded convex domains. This provides a k-dimensional generalization of the so-called interval lemma, allowing us to deduce affine properties of the function from certain additivity relations. (2) We study the discrete geometry of additivity domains of piecewise linear functions, providing a framework for finite tests of minimality and extremality. (3) We give a theory of non-extremality certificates in the form of perturbation functions. We apply these tools in the context of minimal valid functions for the two-dimensional infinite group problem that are piecewise linear on a standard triangulation of the plane, under the assumption of a regularity condition called diagonal constrainedness. We show that the extremality of a minimal valid function is equivalent to the extremality of its restriction to a certain finite two-dimensional group problem. This gives an algorithm for testing the extremality of a given minimal valid function.

Abstract:We review the relationship between discrete groups of symmetries of Euclidean three-space, constructions in algebraic geometry around Kleinian singularities including versions of Hilbert and Quot schemes, and their relationship to finite-dimensional and affine Lie algebras via the McKay correspondence. We focus on combinatorial aspects, such as the enumeration of certain types of partition-like objects, reviewing in particular a recently developed root-of-unity-substitution calculus. While the most complete results are in type A, we also develop aspects of the theory in type D, and end with some questions about the exceptional type E cases.

On cliques in three-dimensional dense point-line arrangements

Abstract:As a variant of the celebrated Szemerédi--Trotter theorem, Guth and Katz proved that $m$ points and $n$ lines in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with at most $\sqrt{n}$ lines in a common plane must determine at most $O(m^{1/2}n^{3/4})$ incidences for $n^{1/2}\leq m\leq n^{3/2}$. This upper bound is asymptotically tight and has an important application in Erdős distinct distance problem. We characterize the extremal constructions towards the Guth--Katz bound by proving that such a large dense point-line arrangement must contain a $k$-clique in general position provided $m \ll n$. This is an analog of a result by Solymosi for extremal Szemerédi--Trotter constructions in the plane.

Cartan Geometry and Infinite-Dimensional Kempf-Ness Theory

Abstract:We pioneer the development of a rigorous infinite-dimensional framework for the Kempf-Ness theorem, addressing the significant challenge posed by the absence of a complexification for the symmetry group in infinite dimensions, e.g, the diffeomorphism group. We propose a novel approach, based on Cartan bundles, to generalize Kempf-Ness theory to infinite dimensions, invoking the fundamental role played by the Maurer-Cartan form. This approach allows us to define and study objects essential for the Kempf-Ness theorem, such as the complex model for orbits and the Kempf-Ness function, as well as establishing its convexity properties and defining a generalized Futaki character. We show how our framework can be applied to the study of various problems in Kähler geometry, deformation quantization, and gauge theory.

Abstract:The stability, robustness, accuracy, and efficiency of space-time finite element methods crucially depend on the choice of approximation spaces for test and trial functions. This is especially true for high-order, mixed finite element methods which often must satisfy an inf-sup condition in order to ensure stability. With this in mind, the primary objective of this paper and a companion paper is to provide a wide range of explicitly stated, conforming, finite element spaces in four-dimensions. In this paper, we construct explicit high-order conforming finite elements on 4-cubes (tesseracts); our construction uses tools from the recently developed `Finite Element Exterior Calculus'. With a focus on practical implementation, we provide details including Piola-type transformations, and explicit expressions for the volumetric, facet, face, edge, and vertex degrees of freedom. In addition, we establish important theoretical properties, such as the exactness of the finite element sequences, and the unisolvence of the degrees of freedom.

Abstract:A general fixed point theorem for isometries in terms of metric functionals is proved under the assumption of the existence of a conical bicombing. It is new for isometries of convex sets of Banach spaces as well as for non-locally compact CAT(0)-spaces and injective spaces. Examples of actions on non-proper CAT(0)-spaces come from the study of diffeomorphism groups, birational transformations, and compact Kähler manifolds. A special case of the fixed point theorem provides a novel mean ergodic theorem that in the Hilbert space case implies von Neumann's theorem. The theorem accommodates classically fixed-point-free isometric maps such as those of Kakutani, Edelstein, Alspach and Prus. Moreover, from the main theorem together with some geometric arguments of independent interest, one can deduce that every bounded invertible operator of a Hilbert space admits a nontrivial invariant metric functional on the space of positive operators. This is a result in the direction of the invariant subspace problem although its full meaning is dependent on a future determination of such metric functionals.
