Abstract:The Li-rich layered oxide is considered as one of the most promising cathode materials for high energy density batteries, due to its ultrahigh capacity derived from oxygen redox. Although incorporating over-stoichiometric Li into layered structure can generate Li2MnO3-like domain and enhance the oxygen redox activity thermodynamically, the fast and complete activation of the Li2MnO3-like domain remains challenging. Herein, we performed a systematic study on structural characteristics of Li-rich cathode materials to decipher the factors accounting for activation of oxygen redox. We reveal that the activation of Li-rich cathode materials is susceptible to local Co coordination environments. The Co ions can intrude into Li2MnO3-like domain and modulate the electronic structure, thereby facilitating the activation of Li-rich layered cathode materials upon first charging, leading to higher reversible capacity. In contrast, Li2MnO3-like domain hardly contains any Ni ions which contribute little to the activation process. The optimum composition design of this class of materials is discussed and we demonstrate a small amount of Co/Mn exchange in Li2MnO3-like domain can significantly promote the oxygen redox activation. Our findings highlight the vital role of Co ions in the activation of oxygen redox Li-rich layered cathode materials and provide new insights into the pathway toward achieving high-capacity Li-rich layered cathode materials.

Abstract:Although the two active redox centers in Li-rich cathodes, including the anionic and cationic contributions, can enable Li-ion batteries to achieve outstanding specific energy, their behaviors at different current densities have not been clarified. Here, we provide a comparative study of transition metals (TMs) and oxygen redox activities by directly accessing their oxidation states in Li-rich materials operated at very different current rates. Our data reveal that the oxidation of oxygen in the near-surface region is at the same level for electrodes cycled with a wide range of current rates, indicating a reaction gradient of lattice oxygen redox reactions. The oxidation process of lattice oxygen is found to be dynamically compatible with that of the TMs. Combining the results of first principles calculations and complementary experimental findings, we propose a detailed mechanism of structural distortion from octahedral Li to tetrahedral Li and the role of oxygen vacancy in Li+ diffusion. It is found that fast delithiation occurring at high current densities can easily cause local structural transformation, leading to a limited Li+ diffusion rate and consequently suppressing rate capability.
Probing the Initiation of Voltage Decay in Li-rich Layered Cathode Materials at the Atomic Scale

Abstract:Li-rich layered oxides hold great promise for improving the energy density of present-day Li-ion batteries. Their application is, however, limited by the voltage decay upon cycling, and the origin of such a phenomenon is poorly understood. A major issue is determining the voltage range over which detrimental reactions originate. In the present study, a unique yet effective approach was employed to probe this issue. Instead of studying the materials during the first cycle, electrochemical behavior and evolution of the atomic structures were compared in extensively cycled specimens under varied charge/discharge voltages. With the upper cutoff voltage lowered from 4.8 to 4.4 V, the voltage decay ceased to occur even after 60 cycles. In the meantime, the material maintained its layered structure without any spinel phase emerging at the surface, which is unambiguously shown by the atomic-resolution Z-contrast imaging and electron energy loss spectroscopy. These results have conclusively demonstrated that structural/chemical changes responsible for the voltage decay began between 4.4 and 4.8 V, where the layered-to-spinel transition was the most dramatic structural change observed. This discovery lays important groundwork for the mechanistic understanding of the voltage decay in Li-rich layered cathode materials.

Abstract:As one of the promising candidate cathode materials for the high-performance lithium-ion batteries, Li-rich layered oxides still suffer from a series of critical drawbacks, such as voltage decay, oxygen release, irreversible migration of transition metal ions, etc. In this work, Li-deficient method has been confirmed as an effective approach to improve the overall electrochemical performances of Li-rich cathode. The optimized lithium-deficient Li-rich layered cathode exhibits splendid discharge capacity of ∼297 mAh/g at 0.1 C and prominent rate performance of ∼143 mAh/g at 5 C. Subsequently, neutron diffraction in combination with Raman spectroscopy is applied to explore and clarify the underlying mechanism for improved performances. It was found that the lithium-deficient induced nickel migration and oxygen vacancy play an significant role in improving electrochemical performances, because migration of nickel into Li layer is able to expand the Li layer spacing and reduce the Li/Ni antisite, leading to facilitated diffusion of lithium ions. Moreover, the formation of oxygen vacancy is able to promote anionic redox processes and suppress the gas release, thus leading to higher capacity. The results present valuable structural insights into the influence of lithium deficiency and provide guidance for the development of Li-rich cathode materials.

Abstract:Development and discovery of cathode materials with superior performance seem to be tremendous challenges for Li-ion battery scientists. Since the topotactic reaction was first demonstrated in the 1970s, layered Li transition metal oxides (LiMO2, M = Co, Ni, Mn) have been a shining star throughout the research and innovation in intercalation materials due to their appealing merits. Generally the basic LiMO2 with a single kind of transition metal ion suffers from safety concerns and structural instability and can not support high energy Li-ion batteries. Nowadays, Li-stoichiometric mixed metal oxides and Li-excess Mn-based oxides have been considered as the most promising families of cathode materials for large-scale Li-ion batteries with high energy density used for transportation. In the present paper, with the help of a phase diagram tetrahedron, we provide an overview of the major developments in the field of LiMO2 cathode materials. The changes in structure during Li extraction and the phase compatibility of Li mixed metal oxides are highlighted. The latest progress in the research of Li-excess Mn-based oxides is also included.

Abstract:Layered lithium-rich transition metal oxides are promising cathode candidates for high-energy-density lithium batteries due to the redox contributions from transition metal cations and oxygen anions. However, their practical application is hindered by gradual capacity fading and voltage decay. Although oxygen loss and phase transformation are recognized as primary factors, the structural deterioration, chemical rearrangement, kinetic and thermodynamic effects remain unclear. Here we integrate analysis of morphological, structural and oxidation state evolution from individual atoms to secondary particles. By performing nanoscale to microscale characterizations, distinct structural change pathways associated with intraparticle heterogeneous reactions are identified. The high level of oxygen defects formed throughout the particle by slow electrochemical activation triggers progressive phase transformation and the formation of nanovoids. Ultrafast lithium (de)intercalation leads to oxygen-distortion-dominated lattice displacement, transition metal ion dissolution and lithium site variation. These inhomogeneous and irreversible structural changes are responsible for the low initial Coulombic efficiency, and ongoing particle cracking and expansion in the subsequent cycles.

Abstract:Lithium-rich layered oxide cathodes with high specific energy have become one of the most popular cathode materials for high-performance lithium-ion batteries. However, spinel phase formation due to the migration of transition metals and the release of lattice oxygen leads to the degradation of electrochemical performance. Here, we develop a synthesis approach for Li-rich layered oxide cathodes by a two-step heattreatment process, which includes precursor calcination and pellet sintering. Compared with the sample prepared by the traditional one-step calcination, the oxide particles prepared by the two-step heat treatment show increased grain size from 217 to 425 nm. The Li-rich layered oxide cathodes with larger crystal grains indicate a mitigated formation of spinel phase and reduced voltage decay, which result in improved specific capacity, cycle stability, and rate capability. In addition, the thermal stability of the oxides is also improved. The improved electrochemical performance is because of the large single grains having a reduced contact area with a liquid electrolyte and the stable crystal lattice during cycling. Our strategy not only provides a simple and effective way to enhance the stability of the Li-rich layered oxide cathodes but also extends to the preparation of oxide powders with large grains.

Abstract:A novel heterostructured cathode material, comprised of a core of Li-rich layered (R (3) over barm) oxides integrated with Li+-conductive Li2SiO3 and an in situ formed spinel (Fd (3) over barm) nano-coating layer, has been successfully synthesized. The ionic conductor Li2SiO3 in the bulk facilitates the Li+ intercalation/deintercalation process and stabilizes the layered structure. This is coupled with the fast 3D Li+ diffusion channels of an electrochemically active spinel coating layer, leading to superior rate capability (94 mA h g(-1) at 10C) and excellent cycling stability in the heterostructured cathode material. This synergistic strategy may provide some new directions for synthesizing high-performance Li-ion battery cathode materials.
Enabling High‐Performance Layered Li‐Rich Oxide Cathodes by Regulating the Formation of Integrated Cation‐Disordered Domains

Abstract:Layered‐rocksalt bi‐phases intergrown cathode is successfully synthesized to broaden the current single‐phase lithium‐containing oxide in lithium‐ion batteries. Herein, only 1.0% (wt.) Na and 1.0% (wt.) Nb co‐substitution has introduced 20.2% (mol) cation‐disordering rocksalt domains (DRS) into the cobalt‐free layered Li‐rich manganese‐based parent matrix, which not only effectively enhances the anionic redox and TM−O bonds, but also promotes the structural stability and Li diffusivity. Layered Li‐rich oxide cathode materials are capable of offering high energy density due to their cumulative cationic and anionic redox mechanism during (de)lithiation process. However, the structural instability of the layered Li‐rich oxide cathode materials, especially in the deeply delitiated state, results in severe capacity and voltage degradation. Considering the minimal isotropic structural evolution of disordered rock salt oxide cathode during cycling, cation‐disordered nano‐domains have been controllably introduced into layered Li‐rich oxides by co‐doping of d0‐TM and alkali ions. Combining electrochemical and synchrotron‐based advanced characterizations, the incorporation of the phase‐compatible cation‐disordered domains can not only hinder the oxygen framework collapse along the c axis of layered Li‐rich cathode under high operation voltage but also promote the Mn and anionic activities as well as Li+ (de)intercalation kinetics, leading to remarkable improvement in rate capability and mitigation of capacity and voltage decay. With this unique layered/rocksalt intergrown structure, the intergrown cathode yields an ultrahigh capacity of 288.4 mAh g−1 at 0.1 C, and outstanding capacity retention of ≈90.0% with obviously suppressed voltage decay after 100 cycles at 0.5, 1, and 2 C rate. This work provides a new direction toward advanced cathode materials for next‐generation Li‐ion batteries.

Abstract:Lithium-rich layered oxides are considered as promising cathode materials for Li-ion batteries with high energy density due to their higher capacity as compared with the conventional LiMO2 (e.g., LiCoO2, LiNiO2, and LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn O-1/3(2)) layered oxides. However, why lithium-rich layered oxides exhibit high capacities without undergoing a structural collapse for a certain number of cycles has attracted limited attention. Here, based on the model of Li2RuO3, it is uncovered that the mechanism responsible for the structural integrity shown by lithium-rich layered oxides is realized by the fl exible local structure due to the presence of lithium atoms in the transition metal layer, which favors the formation of O-2(2-)-like species, with the aid of in situ extended X-ray absorption fi ne structure (EXAFS), in situ energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. This fi nding will open new scope for the development of high-capacity layered electrodes.

Abstract:The O2-type layered oxide cathode materials have attracted strong research interest recently because of their high specific capacity and their unique lattice structure that may help suppress the detrimental layer-to-spinel phase transition. These materials are metastable and commonly prepared through Li-Na exchange methods from the Na-containing P2-type oxides. Here we investigated the structural, chemical, and morphological changes during the ion-exchange processes in both the LiBr/hexanol solution and the LiNO 3 /LiCl molten salts. The solution method was more favorable in preparing high-capacity O2-type cathode materials, even though the structural reorganization was slower compared with the molten-salt method. The as-made O2-type cathode materials, contrary to the previous belief, were actually Li-deficient at their pristine states, but could accept more Li ions than that it was extracted during the first charge/discharge cycle. The O2-type cathode materials exhibited high capacities (up to 266 mAh g −1 ) but the cycle performance requires further improvements. XRD and Raman spectroscopy studies indicated that the structural changes in the bulk were quite reversible. Using a fluorinated electrolyte to address the interface instability improved the cycle performance. Our results provide a more complete understanding of the O2-type cathode materials and useful guidance in the design of low-cost, high-energy cathode materials for LIBs.

Abstract:Single‐crystalline (SC) Li‐rich layered oxides have garnered significant attention due to their inhibited lattice oxygen release and reduced crack formation compared with polycrystalline (PC) counterparts. However, it raises a crucial question regarding the selection of prevailing lithium sources—Li2CO3 and LiOH·H2O—for the solid‐state synthesis of SC cathodes, which critically impacts the technical route and future development of SC materials. Herein, a series of SC Li‐rich layered cathodes were synthesized using these two lithium sources. The SC materials prepared with LiOH·H2O (LRO−H) exhibited larger grain sizes compared with those using Li2CO3 (LRO−C). This can be attributed to the lower phase transition temperature of the precursor to spinel phase, which promotes further SC growth during solid‐state reactions. Furthermore, LRO−H demonstrated excellent electrochemical stability, whereas LRO−C exhibited superior initial capacities. To balance these attributes, a mixed lithium sources system (LRO−M) was proposed, showing superior Li+ diffusion kinetics and suppressed layered−to−spinel transformation, resulting in excellent rate performance and an extended battery lifespan. Altogether, these findings provide critical insights into the impact of lithium sources on the growth process, structural stability, and electrochemical properties of SC Li‐rich layered cathodes, guiding the synthesis and design of next‐generation cathode materials.

Abstract:Layered oxides represent a prominent class of cathodes employed in lithium-ion batteries. The structural degradation of layered cathodes causes capacity decay during cycling, which is generally induced by anisotropic lattice strain in the bulk of cathode particle and oxygen release at the surface. However, particularly in lithium-rich layered oxides (LLOs) that undergo intense oxygen redox reactions, the challenge of simultaneously addressing bulk and surface issues through a singular modification technique remains arduous. Here a thin (1-nm) and coherent spinel-like phase is constructed on the surface of LLOs particle to suppress bulk strain and surface O2 release by just adjusting the amount of lithium source during synthesis. The spinel-like phase hinders the surface O2 release by accommodating O2 inside the surface layer, while the trapped O2 in the bulk impedes strain evolution by ≈70% at high voltages compared with unmodified LLOs. Consequently, the enhanced structural stability leads to an improved capacity retention of 97.6% and a high Coulombic efficiency of ≈99.5% after 100 cycles at 0.1°C. These findings provide profound mechanistic insights into the functioning of surface structure and offer guidance for synthesizing high-capacity cathodes with superior cyclability.

Abstract:Li and Mn rich (LMR) layered oxides, written as xLi2MnO3·(1 − x)LiMO2 (M = Mn, Ni, Co, Fe, etc.), have been widely reported in recent years due to their high capacity and high energy density. The stable structure and superior performance of LMR oxides make them one of the most promising candidates for the next-generation cathode materials. However, the commercialization of these materials is hindered by several drawbacks, such as low initial Coulombic efficiency, the degradation of voltage and capacity during cycling, and poor rate performance. This review summarizes research progress in solving these concerns of LMR cathodes over the past decade by following three classes of strategies: morphology design, bulk design, and surface modification. We elaborate on the processing procedures, electrochemical performance, mechanisms, and limitations of each approach, and finally put forward the concerns left and the possible solutions for the commercialization of LMR cathodes.

Abstract:Lithium-manganese-rich layered oxides have sparked intense interest on high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries because of their unique anionic redox. While making efforts to adjust the primary particle size for the improved electrochemical kinetics, current research is insufficient to explain how the anionic/cationic interplay governs the electrochemical behavior except for ion diffusion. Here, fully ordered Li1.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13O2 spheres of shortened primary particle size were synthesized via the coprecipitation method for use as cathodes. A high discharge capacity of 303.2 mA h g-1 was achieved for the first cycle. Optimized nanostructures reduce the lithium ion diffusion length and increase electronic conductivity unsurprisingly, contributing to excellent electrochemical activity and rate capability. Furthermore, the decreased primary particle size accelerated the redox reactivity of cations and the reversibility of anionic redox on path dependence. This work clarifies the electrochemical mechanism of cationic/anionic redox of these Li-rich layered oxides and provides a new vision for a unique design of high-energy cathode materials with better application.
Structurally robust lithium-rich layered oxides for high-energy and long-lasting cathodes

Abstract:Abstract O2-type lithium-rich layered oxides, known for mitigating irreversible transition metal migration and voltage decay, provide suitable framework for exploring the inherent properties of oxygen redox. Here, we present a series of O2-type lithium-rich layered oxides exhibiting minimal structural disordering and stable voltage retention even with high anionic redox participation based on the nominal composition. Notably, we observe a distinct asymmetric lattice breathing phenomenon within the layered framework driven by excessive oxygen redox, which includes substantial particle-level mechanical stress and the microcracks formation during cycling. This chemo-mechanical degradation can be effectively mitigated by balancing the anionic and cationic redox capabilities, securing both high discharge voltage (~ 3.43 V vs . Li/Li + ) and capacity (~ 200 mAh g −1 ) over extended cycles. The observed correlation between the oxygen redox capability and the structural evolution of the layered framework suggests the distinct intrinsic capacity fading mechanism that differs from the previously proposed voltage fading mode.

Abstract:Li- and Mn-rich layered oxides (LMRO) have drawn much attention for application as cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries due to their high-energy density of over 1000 W h kg(-1). However, several issues and challenges need to be overcome before realizing the commercialization of LMRO cathode materials, including their disputed crystal structure, ambiguous reaction mechanism, high initial irreversible capacity, poor cycle life, fast voltage fading, and poor rate capability. In this paper, we systematically review the development history, elaborate the fundamentals and demonstrate the latest research advances in LMRO cathode materials. Furthermore, the applications of LMRO cathode materials and their related key technical issues in full-cells, as well as the prospects for future research are also discussed.

Abstract:The Ni-rich layer-structured oxide is one of the most promising candidate cathode materials for the high energydensity Li-ion batteries. However, the commercial applications of these materials are hindered with drawbacks such as structural instability and poor cycling performance at high potentials. Herein, we comprehensively studied the oxygen redox reaction and the structural reversibility of LiNi0.83Co0.12Mn0.05O2 at deep delithiation using the synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy, scanning transmission electron microscopy and density functional theory calculations. The oxygen redox occurs due to the cation mixing upon delithiation in this material though there are no Li-O-Li configurations in its pristine form. The formation of the I41 structure was attributed to the migration of the transition metals in the deeply delithiated material, extending the route of the phase transformation from the layered to the rock-salt structure. These findings are helpful to enrich the understanding of the origin of the oxygen redox and reveal its impact on the structural transformations in the Nirich layered oxides. These will spur new strategies to enhance the performance of the cathode materials for the next-generation Li-ion batteries.
