Abstract:A large fraction of the anticipated source detections by the Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST-LAT) will initially be unidentified. We argue that traditional approaches to identify individuals and/or populations of gamma ray sources will encounter procedural limitations. Those limitations are discussed on the background of source identifications from EGRET observations. Generally, our ability to classify (faint) source populations in the anticipated GLAST dataset with the required degree of statistical confidence will be hampered by sheer source wealth. A new paradigm for achieving the classification of gamma ray source populations is discussed.

A Statistical Approach to Recognizing Source Classes for Unassociated Sources in the First Fermi-LAT Catalog

Abstract:The Fermi Large Area Telescope First Source Catalog (1FGL) provided spatial, spectral, and temporal properties for a large number of gamma-ray sources using a uniform analysis method. After correlating with the most-complete catalogs of source types known to emit gamma rays, 630 of these sources are "unassociated" (i.e. have no obvious counterparts at other wavelengths). Here, we employ two statistical analyses of the primary gamma-ray characteristics for these unassociated sources in an effort to correlate their gamma-ray properties with the AGN and pulsar populations in 1FGL. Based on the correlation results, we classify 221 AGN-like and 134 pulsar-like sources in the 1FGL unassociated sources. The results of these source "classifications" appear to match the expected source distributions, especially at high Galactic latitudes. While useful for planning future multiwavelength follow-up observations, these analyses use limited inputs, and their predictions should not be considered equivalent to "probable source classes" for these sources. We discuss multiwavelength results and catalog cross-correlations to date, and provide new source associations for 229 Fermi-LAT sources that had no association listed in the 1FGL catalog. By validating the source classifications against these new associations, we find that the new association matches the predicted source class in ~80% of the sources.

Identifying Three New AGNs Among Fermi Unidentified Gigaelectronvolt Sources

Abstract:We report our identification of three gigaelectronvolt $\gamma$-ray sources, 4FGL J0502.6+0036, 4FGL J1055.9+6507, and 4FGL J1708.2+5519, as Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs). They are listed in the latest Fermi-LAT source catalog as unidentified ones. We find that the sources all showed $\gamma$-ray flux variations in recent years. Using different survey catalogs, we are able to find a radio source within the error circle of each source's position. Further analysis of optical sources in the fields allows us to determine the optical counterparts, which showed similar variation patterns to those seen in $\gamma$-rays. The optical counterparts have reported redshifts of 0.6, 1.5, and 2.3, respectively, estimated from photometric measurements. In addition, we also obtain an X-ray spectrum of 4FGL J0502.6+0036 and a flux upper limit on the X-ray emission of 4FGL J1055.9+6507 by analyzing the archival data. The broadband spectral energy distributions of the three sources from radio to $\gamma$-rays are constructed. Comparing mainly the $\gamma$-ray properties of the three sources with those of different sub-classes of AGNs, we tentatively identify them as blazars. Followup optical spectroscopy is highly warranted for obtaining their spectral features and thus verifying the identification.

Abstract:We considered the fourth catalog of gamma-ray point sources produced by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) and selected only jetted active galactic nuclei (AGN) or sources with no specific classification, but with a low-frequency counterpart. Our final list is composed of 2980 gamma-ray point sources. We then searched for optical spectra in all the available literature and publicly available databases, to measure redshifts and to confirm or change the original LAT classification. Our final list of gamma-ray emitting jetted AGN is composed of BL Lac Objects (40%), flat-spectrum radio quasars (23%), misaligned AGN (2.8%), narrow-line Seyfert 1, Seyfert, and low-ionization nuclear emission-line region galaxies (1.9%). We also found a significant number of objects changing from one type to another, and vice versa (changing-look AGN, 1.1%). About 30% of gamma-ray sources still have an ambiguous classification or lack one altogether.

Abstract:The 3rd EGRET catalogue lists 271 sources and provides an identification for 101 of them. Thus, the unidentified sources are the majority in the gamma-ray sky, as we currently know it. Solving the mystery of the unidentified gamma-ray sources is a major challenge for all fields of astronomy. Here we shall review the different approaches towards source identification as well as the results achieved so far.

Abstract:A large fraction of Fermi-Large Area Telescope (LAT) sources in the fourth Fermi-LAT 14 yr catalog (4FGL) still remain unidentified (unIDed). We continued to improve our machine-learning pipeline and used it to classify 1206 X-ray sources with signal-to-noise ratios >3 located within the extent of 73 unIDed 4FGL sources with Chandra X-ray Observatory observations included in the Chandra Source Catalog 2.0. Recent improvements to our pipeline include astrometric corrections, probabilistic cross-matching to lower-frequency counterparts, and a more realistic oversampling method. X-ray sources are classified into eight broad predetermined astrophysical classes defined in the updated training data set, which we also release. We present details of the machine-learning classification, describe the pipeline improvements, and perform an additional spectral and variability analysis for brighter sources. The classifications give 103 plausible X-ray counterparts to 42 GeV sources. We identify 2 GeV sources as isolated neutron star candidates, 16 as active galactic nucleus candidates, seven as sources associated with star-forming regions, and eight as ambiguous cases. For the remaining 40 unIDed 4FGL sources, we could not identify any plausible counterpart in X-rays, or they are too close to the Galactic Center. Finally, we outline the observational strategies and further improvements in the pipeline that can lead to more accurate classifications.

Abstract:The Third Catalog of Hard Fermi Large Area Telescope Sources (3FHL) reports the detection of 1556 objects at E > 10 GeV. However, 177 sources remain unassociated and 23 are associated with a ROSAT X-ray detection of unknown origin. Pointed X-ray observations were conducted on 30 of these unassociated and unknown sources with Swift-XRT. A bright X-ray source counterpart was detected in 21 out of 30 fields. In five of these 21 fields, we detected more than one X-ray counterpart, totaling 26 X-ray sources analyzed. Multiwavelength data was compiled for each X-ray source detected. We find that 21 out of the 26 X-ray sources detected display the multiwavelength properties of blazars, while one X-ray source displays the characteristics of a Galactic source. Using trained decision tree, random forest, and support vector machine models, we predict all 21 blazar counterpart candidates to be BL Lacertae objects (BL Lacs). This is in agreement with BL Lacs being the most populous source class in the 3FHL.

Abstract:The identification of celestial gamma-ray sources with astronomical objects or object classes has remained the initial and most fundamental key for understanding their physical nature. The observational characteristic of a gamma-ray emitter and the conditions under which an astronomical object is able to produce energetic gamma-ray emission defines the range of candidates available for source identifications. The main obstacle must be seen in the fact that a gamma-ray source location is often imprecise, a flux history could only be established on the basis of weeks, and uncertainties in the gamma-ray observables are considerably large. Therefore coordinated multifrequency follow-up campaigns or spatial-statistical methods are required to assign proper counterpart identifications. Although Active Galactic Nuclei and pulsars are uniquely identified EGRET sources, many other gamma-ray sources still remain unidentified. I will review properties of the population and highlight the characteristics of potential counterparts of the still unidentified gamma-ray sources detected by EGRET.

Abstract:Abstract The fourth-DR3 version (4FGL-DR3) of the Fermi/LAT catalogue of γ-ray sources contains ∼1000 objects at a galactic latitude |b| > 10○ which are not identified with an optical counterpart (UGS). We performed a systematic study of these sources, focusing on 190 objects that have a unique X-ray counterpart in the available Swift/XRT observations. Optical counterparts are then selected, and for 33 sources optical spectra were found in the literature. We found that 21 can be classified as BL Lac objects. Among these we were able to provide the redshift for 8 of them while for 2 others we established a lower limit to the redshift by detecting intervening absorption. The other 12 objects display optical spectra with prominent emission lines (0.036<z<1.65). These spectra are characterized by both broad and narrow emission lines with the exception of 3 sources. One of them displays only broad emission lines, while the other two exclusively exhibit narrow lines. On the basis of the radio/optical flux ratio, all BL Lac objects in this study are radio loud. Four sources out of the 12 with prominent emission lines can be classified as radio loud, while at least 5 of the 12 sources with prominent lines are radio quiet. This is somewhat unexpected comparing with the radio-loudness distribution of the 4FGL-associated blazars.

Abstract:We describe the role of GeV gamma-ray observations with GLAST-LAT (Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope - Large Area Telescope) in identifying interaction sites of cosmic-ray proton (or hadrons) with interstellar medium (ISM). We expect to detect gamma rays from neutral pion decays in high-density ISM regions in the Galaxy, Large Magellanic Cloud, and other satellite galaxies. These gamma-ray sources have been detected already with EGRET (Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope) as extended sources (eg. LMC and Orion clouds) and GLAST-LAT will detect many more with a higher spatial resolution and in a wider spectral range. We have developed a novel image restoration technique based on the Richardson-Lucy algorithm optimized for GLAST-LAT observation of extended sources. Our algorithm calculates PSF (point spread function) for each event. This step is very important for GLAST-LAT and EGRET image analysis since PSF varies more than one order of magnitude from one gamma ray to another depending on its energy as well as its impact point and angle in the instrument. The GLAST-LAT and EGRET image analysis has to cope with Poisson fluctuation due to low number of detected photons for most sources. Our technique incorporates wavelet filtering to minimize effects due to the fluctuation. Preliminary studies on some EGRET sources are presented, which shows potential of this novel image restoration technique for the identification and characterisation of extended gamma-ray sources.

Abstract:In the latest data release from the Fermi $\gamma$-ray Space Telescope (the 4th Fermi LAT 14 yr Catalog, or 4FGL), more than 50% of the Galactic sources are yet to be identified. We observed 13 unidentified Fermi LAT sources with the Chandra X-Ray Observatory to explore their nature. We report the results of the classification of X-ray sources in the fields of these $\gamma$-ray sources and discuss the implications for their nature. We use multiwavelength (MW) data for a machine-learning classification, accompanied by a more detailed spectral/variability analysis for brighter sources. Eight 4FGL sources have $\gamma$-ray pulsars within their position error ellipses. We consider three of these pulsars (PSR J1906+0722, PSR J1105-6037, and PSR J1358-6025) to be detected in X-rays, while PSR J1203-6242 shows a hint of X-ray emission. Within the positional uncertainties of three of the 4FGL sources, we detect X-ray sources that may be yet unknown pulsars, depending on the MW association. In addition to point sources, we discovered two extended sources, one of which is likely to be a bow-shock pulsar-wind nebula associated with PSR J1358-6025. Finally, we classify other X-ray sources detected in these observations and report the most interesting classifications.

Search for gamma rays from SNe with a variable-size sliding-time-window analysis of the Fermi-LAT data

Abstract:We present a systematic search for gamma-ray emission from supernovae (SNe) in the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) Pass 8 data. The sample of targets consists of 55,880 candidates from the Open Supernova Catalog. We searched for gamma rays from SNe by means of a variable-size sliding-time-window analysis. Our results confirm the presence of transient gamma-ray emission from the sources of non-AGN classes, including transitional pulsars, solar flares, gamma-ray bursts, novae, and the Crab Nebula, which are projected near some of these SN's positions, and also strengthen support to the variable signal in the direction of SN iPTF14hls. The analysis is successful in finding both short (e.g. solar flares) and long (e.g. transitional pulsars) high flux states. Our search reveals two new gamma-ray transient signals occurred in 2019 in the directions of optical transients that are SN candidates, AT2019bvr and AT2018iwp, with their flux increases within 6 months after the dates of SN's discoveries. These signals are bright and their variability is at a higher statistical level than that of iPTF14hls. An exploration of archival multi-wavelength observations towards their positions is necessary to establish their association with SNe or other classes of sources. Our analysis, in addition, shows a bright transient gamma-ray signal at low Galactic latitudes in the direction of PSR J0205+6449. In addition, we report the results of an all-sky search for gamma-ray transient sources. This provided two additional candidates to gamma-ray transient sources.

On the Nature of the variable gamma-ray sources in the Galaxy

Abstract:Population studies of EGRET gamma-ray sources indicate that there is a distinctive population of bright sources at low galactic latitudes. The sources have a distribution consistent with that of young galactic objects, with a concentration toward the inner spiral arms. There is a subgroup that displays strong variability with timescales from days to months. Following an earlier suggestion by Kaufman Bernado et al. (2002), we explore the possibility that these sources could be high-mass microquasars. Detailed models for the gamma-ray emission that include inverse Compton interactions of electrons in the relativistic jets and photons from all local fields (stellar UV photons, synchrotron photons, soft X-ray photons from the accretion disk, and hard X-ray photons from a corona) are presented. We conclude that microquasars are excellent candidates for the parent population of the subgroup of variable low-latitude EGRET sources.

Abstract:We propose a novel statistical method to extend Fermi-LAT catalogues of high-latitude γ-ray sources below their nominal threshold. To do so, we rely on the determination of the differential source-count distribution of sub-threshold sources which only provides the statistical flux distribution of faint sources. By simulating ensembles of synthetic skies, we assess quantitatively the likelihood for pixels in the sky with relatively low-test statistics to be due to sources, therefore complementing the source-count distribution with spatial information. Besides being useful to orient efforts towards multi-messenger and multi-wavelength identification of new γ-ray sources, we expect the results to be especially advantageous for statistical applications such as cross-correlation analyses.

Abstract:The automatic classification of X-ray detections is a necessary step in extracting astrophysical information from compiled catalogs of astrophysical sources. Classification is useful for the study of individual objects, statistics for population studies, as well as for anomaly detection, i.e., the identification of new unexplored phenomena, including transients and spectrally extreme sources. Despite the importance of this task, classification remains challenging in X-ray astronomy due to the lack of optical counterparts and representative training sets. We develop an alternative methodology that employs an unsupervised machine learning approach to provide probabilistic classes to Chandra Source Catalog sources with a limited number of labeled sources, and without ancillary information from optical and infrared catalogs. We provide a catalog of probabilistic classes for 8,756 sources, comprising a total of 14,507 detections, and demonstrate the success of the method at identifying emission from young stellar objects, as well as distinguishing between small-scale and large-scale compact accretors with a significant level of confidence. We investigate the consistency between the distribution of features among classified objects and well-established astrophysical hypotheses such as the unified AGN model. This provides interpretability to the probabilistic classifier. Code and tables are available publicly through GitHub. We provide a web playground for readers to explore our final classification at https://umlcaxs-playground.streamlit.app.

On the correlation between young massive star clusters and gamma-ray unassociated sources

Abstract:Star clusters (SCs) are potential cosmic-ray (CR) accelerators and therefore are expected to emit high-energy radiation. However, a clear detection of gamma-ray emission from this source class has only been possible for a handful of cases. This could in principle result from two different reasons: either detectable SCs are limited to a small fraction of the total number of Galactic SCs, or gamma-ray-emitting SCs are not recognized as such and therefore are listed in the ensemble of unidentified sources. In this Letter we investigate this latter scenario, by comparing available catalogs of SCs and HII regions, obtained from Gaia and WISE observations, to the gamma-ray GeV and TeV catalogs built from Fermi-LAT, H.E.S.S. and LHAASO data. The significance of the correlation between catalogs is evaluated by comparing the results with simulations of synthetic populations. A strong correlation emerges between Fermi-LAT unidentified sources and HII regions which trace massive SCs in the earliest (< 1-2 Myr) phase of their life, where no supernova explosions have happened yet, confirming that winds of massive stars can alone accelerate particles and produce gamma-ray emission at least up to GeV energies. The association with TeV-energies sources is less evident. Similarly, no significant association is found between Gaia SCs and GeV nor TeV sources. We ascribe this fact to the larger extension of these objects, but also to an intrinsic bias in the Gaia selection towards SCs surrounded by a lower target gas density, that would otherwise hinder the detection in the optical waveband.

Abstract:Although the majority of gamma-ray sources still remain unidentified, we have various kinds of information to characterize the observational properties of unidentified EGRET sources. Despite astronomical properties like locations of individual sources or the collective arrangement of the class as such, the nine years of CGRO observations provide the ability to investigate flux variability at different timescales, enable us to perform periodicity searches, determine gamma-ray source spectra between 30 MeV and 10 GeV and even investigate spectral variability. The basic observational properties of unidentified high-energy gamma-ray sources discovered by EGRET are reviewed. Various instrumental and observational peculiarities affecting the interpretation of the EGRET data are pointed out, also describing the way such biases might affect scientific conclusions drawn from the EGRET data.
