Abstract:Thiele's Hydrocarbons (THs) featuring a 9,10-anthrylene core with switchable geometric and electronic configurations offer exciting possibilities in advanced functional materials. Despite significant advances in main group-based diradicaloids in contemporary chemistry, main group THs containing an anthrylene cores have remained elusive, primarily due to the lack of straightforward synthetic strategies and the inherent high reactivity of these species. In this study, we utilize an anthracene-based phosphine synthon to demonstrate, for the first time, a facile and high-yielding synthetic strategy for robust P-functionalized overcrowded ethylenes (OCEs) within the TH family. These OCEs feature a non-symmetric environment, incorporating (thio)xanthyl and phosphaalkene termini. We systematically probe the electronic structures of these derivatives to illustrate the impact of the isolobal phosphaalkene motif on the quinoidal/diradicaloid character. Notably, the compounds exhibit dynamic redox behavior, leading to orthogonally twisted conformational changes upon oxidation, with a kinetically locked redox-couple.

Abstract:Reactions of trinuclear rare-earth metal complexes bearing functionalized phosphinidene ligand [L(3)Ln(3)(mu(2)-Me)(2)(mu(3)-Me) (mu(3)-eta(1): eta(2):eta(2)-PC6H4-o) (L = [PhC((NC6H4Pr2)-Pr-i-2,6)(2)](-), Ln = Y (la), Lu (lb)) with phenylacetylene, CO2, diisopropyl carbodiimide, isocya-nide, or PhSSPh lead to the formation of a series of phosphorus-containing products. The reaction of 1 with CS2 yields two novel P-methyl-phosphindole-2,3-dithio-late dianion complexes, revealing an unusual tandem desulfurization/coupling/cyclization reaction mode of CS2. A possible reaction pathway was determined by density functional theory calculations. This emphasizes the key role of the reduction power of the formal P2- part of the phosphinidene in the C-S bond cleavage.

Phosphorus Sulfur and Silicon and the Related Elements

Abstract:Cu(II) catalyzed open air reactions of 2,5-bis(-P(O)R 2 ))-3,6-dichloro-hydroquinones (R = Ph or i Pr) with selected primary amines or ammonia proceeded with oxidation of the hydroquinone ring and substitution of chlorines by the amino groups. The products of these reactions were 2,5-bis(-P(O)R 2 ))-3,6-di(-NHR')-quinones ( 1a , R = Ph, R′ = Cy; 1b , R = i Pr, R′ = Cy; 2a , R = Ph, R′ = –CH(CH 2 OH) 2 ; 2b , R = i Pr, R′ = –CH(CH 2 OH) 2 ; 3a , R = Ph, R′ = –CH 2 CH(OH)CH 2 OH; 3b , R = i Pr, R′ = CH 2 CH(OH)CH 2 OH; 4a (R = Ph, R′ = H; 4b , R = i Pr, R′ = H). They were isolated as bright orange or yellow solids in moderate/good yields. The compounds were characterized by multinuclear ( 1 H, 13 C, 31 P) NMR, FT-IR, UV–Vis, high resolution mass-spectrometry, and cyclic voltammetry. Compounds 1b , 2a , 3a and 4a,b were also characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction methods.

Abstract:Compound 1 was prepared from N -Dipp (Dipp = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl) substituted, 10π-electron benzazaphosphole 2 via a two-step protonolysis/substitution protocol using HCl and LiAlH 4 . As opposed to structurally related N -heterocyclic phosphines, the PH unit in 1 acted as a weak hydride. A sluggish insertion reaction between 1 and electron-poor CF 3 C(O)Ph was observed, but dehydrocouplings with weakly acidic alcohols like MeOH and HFIP (hexafluoroisopropanol) did not proceed, as predicted by DFT computations showing high activation energies. However, a rapid and essentially barrierless reaction with:CF 2 occurred, yielding P–CF 2 H derivative 6 , which was fully characterized by NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis (EA), HRMS, and X-ray crystallography. The complex splitting pattern of the diastereotopic fluorines of the –CF 2 H group observed in the 19 F NMR spectrum was successfully simulated using MestReNova. Finally, 1 underwent hydrophosphination in the presence of phenylacetylene, generating a mixture of anti- ( E/Z- 7) and Markovnikov products ( 8 ). Computations indicated that anti-Markovnikov E- 7 (P–CH=CHPh) formed via highly strained phosphirene intermediate 9 , while Z -7 crystallized out of solution and was characterized by NMR spectroscopy, EA, HRMS, and X-ray crystallography.

Abstract:While thiocarbonyl-stabilised phosphonium ylides generally react upon flash vacuum pyrolysis by the extrusion of Ph3PS to give alkynes in an analogous way to their carbonyl-stabilised analogues, two examples with a hydrogen atom on the ylidic carbon are found to undergo a quite different process. The net transfer of a phenyl group from P to S gives (Z)-configured 1-diphenylphosphino-2-(phenylsulfenyl)alkenes in a novel isomerisation process via intermediate λ5-1,2-thiaphosphetes. These prove to be versatile hemilabile ligands with a total of seven complexes prepared involving five different transition metals. Four of these are characterised by X-ray diffraction with two involving the bidentate ligand forming a five-membered ring metallacycle and two with the ligand coordinating to the metal only through phosphorus.

Abstract:On account of the broad utilities of organophosphorus compounds, the development of highly efficient and concise phosphination methods is significantly important and urgent. Herein, we disclose a novel method for the synthesis of phosphorylated heterocycles: versatile intermediate propargylamines serving as a new type of radical acceptors incorporated in P-radicals via a photocatalytic strategy. This reaction proceeds through a cascade phosphinoylation/ cyclization/oxidation/aromatization pathway using readily available starting materials under mild conditions of light with excellent atom economy, catalyzed by AgOAc or fac-Ir(ppy)(3). One of the phosphorylated quinolines was selected, as an example, as an electron-transporting material for fabricating phosphorescence organic light-emitting diodes displaying excellent electroluminescence performances with a maximum external quantum efficiency of 21.9% with negligible efficiency roll-off ratios.

Abstract:Hypervalent iodine(III) reagents have become indispensable tools in organic synthesis, but gaps remain in the functionalities they can transfer. In this study, a fundamental understanding of the thermal stability of phosphorus-iodonium ylids is obtained through X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Insights into the structural factors affecting thermal stability and potential decomposition pathways will enable the future design and development of new reagents.

Abstract:Triazaphospholes are potential polydentate ligands due to the presence of both phosphorus and nitrogen donor atoms within the aromatic 5‐membered heterocycle. The incorporation of an additional pyridyl‐substituent opens up the possibility of a post‐synthesis modification via chemoselective and also stepwise alkylation exclusively of the nitrogen atoms. This can be controlled by the choice and by the stoichiometry of the electrophile and allows the targeted synthesis of a variety of novel mono‐ and dicationic ligands. Reaction with Cu(I)‐halides causes the formation of cuprates of the type [CuXn](n‐1)‐, which enables coordination of the π‐acidic phosphorus donor to the negatively charged metal core, which is favored over the coordination by a strongly σ‐donating nitrogen atom. The use of cationic triazaphosphole derivatives can be used as a strategy to enforce the coordination of the ligand to an electron rich metal solely via the phosphorus atom. However, there is a subtle balance between the formation of either coordination polymers or dimeric structures, as the substitution pattern on the heterocycle and the nature of the halide have a large influence on the coordination motifs formed.

Abstract:The coordination chemistry of (diphenyl((5-phenyl-1H-pyrazol-3-yl)methyl) phosphine oxide), 1, was explored. Reacting appropriate equivalents of this ligand and either cobalt perchlorate or MoO2Cl2 results in formation of [Co((C6H5)2POCH2(C3N2H2)(C6H5))2(C4H8O)2][ClO4]2, 2, and MoO2Cl2((C6H5)2POCH2(C3N2H2)(C6H5))(THF), 3. Complexes were characterized by FTIR, NMR, TGA and elemental analyses. Single crystal X-ray spectroscopy reveals octahedral geometries for both compounds. Complex 2 consists of two trans THF ligands in axial positions and two (diphenyl((5-phenyl-1H-pyrazol-3-yl)methyl) phosphine oxide) ligands occupying equatorial positions resulting in an overall octahedral geometry. Two perchlorate counter anions complete the structure. The Co ion resides on an inversion point. THF contains disorder with the four carbon atoms and the major orientation refined to an occupancy of 86.1(9)%. Complex 3 consists of the cis-dioxo MoO2 unit bonded with axial trans-chloride ligands and 1 in the equatorial plane completing the disordered octahedral geometry. A THF ligand is hydrogen bonded to the H-atom on the nitrogen of the pyrazole moiety in ligand 1. DFT calculations based on geometries obtained crystallographically were useful in assigning FTIR peaks and the UV-vis spectra.

Abstract:The conceptual replacement of nitrogen with phosphorus in common organic functional groups unlocks new properties and reactivity. The phosphorus‐containing analogues of triazenes are underexplored but offer great potential as flexible and small bite‐angle ligands. This manuscript explores the synthesis and characterisation of a family of air‐stable azophosphine‐borane complexes, and their subsequent deprotection to the free azophosphines. These compounds are structurally characterised, both experimentally and computationally, and highlight the availability of the phosphorus lone pair for coordination. This is confirmed by demonstrating that neutral azophosphines can act as ligands in Ru complexes, and can coordinate as monodentate or bidentate ligands in a controlled manner, in contrast to their nitrogen analogues.

Abstract:Two unique structures were isolated from the phosphorylation reaction of 10H-phenothiazine. The 5,5-dimethyl-2-(10H-phenothiazin-10-yl)-1,3,2-dioxaphosphinane 2-oxide (2a) illustrates the product of N-phosphorylation of phenothiazine. Moreover, a potential product of 2a instability, a thiophosphoric acid 2b, was successfully isolated and structurally characterized. Molecule 2a, similarly to sulfoxide derivative 3, possesses interesting phosphorescence properties due to the presence of d-pπ bonds. The X-ray, NMR, and DFT computational studies indicate that compound 2a exhibits an anomeric effect. Additionally, the syntheses of selected symmetrical and unsymmetrical pyridine-embedded phenazines were elaborated. To compare the influence of phosphorus and sulfur atoms on the structural characteristics of 10H-phenothiazine derivatives, the high-quality crystals of (4a,12a-dihydro-12H-benzo[5,6][1,4]thiazino[2,3-b]quinoxalin-12-yl)(phenyl)methanone (1) and selected phenazines 5,12-diisopropyl-3,10-dimethyldipyrido[3,2-a:3',2'-h]phenazine (5) and 5-isopropyl-N,N,3-trimethylpyrido[3,2-a]phenazin-10-amine (6a) were obtained. The structures of molecules 1, 2a, 2-mercapto-5,5-dimethyl-1,3,2-dioxaphosphinane 2-oxide (2b), 3,7-dinitro-10H-phenothiazine 5-oxide (3), 5 and 6a were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements.

Abstract:Two new trinuclear (3)-bridged rare-earth metal phosphinidene complexes, [{L(Ln)(-Me)}(3)((3)-Me)((3)-PPh)] (L=[PhC(NC(6)H(4)iPr(2)-2,6)(2)](-), Ln=Y (2a), Lu (2b)), were synthesized through methane elimination of the corresponding carbene precursors with phenylphosphine. Heating a toluene solution of 2 at 120 degrees C leads to an unprecedented orthoCH bond activation of the PhP ligand to form the bridged phosphinidene/phenyl complexes. Reactions of 2 with ketones, thione, or isothiocyanate show clear phospha-Wittig chemistry, giving the corresponding organic phosphinidenation products and oxide (sulfide) complexes. Reaction of 2 with CS2 leads to the formation of novel trinuclear rare-earth metal thione dianion clusters, for which a possible pathway was determined by DFT calculation.
Oxidation and Chalcogenylative Disproportionation of Anionic Phosphide Ligands in Yttrium Complexes with Elemental Sulfur and Selenium.

Abstract:The oxidation and disproportionation of anionic phosphide ligands in yttrium complexes with elemental sulfur and selenium are reported. The mixed TpMe2/Cp supported yttrium phosphide complex TpMe2CpYPPh2(THF) (1) reacted with one equiv. of elemental S or Se in THF at room temperature to deliver two structurally characterized yttrium dithio- or monoseleno-phosphinates TpMe2CpYS2PPh2(THF) (2) and TpMe2CpYSePPh2(THF) (4Se), respectively. Further investigations showed that the yttrium thiophosphinate TpMe2CpYSPPh2(THF) (4S) can be isolated from the reactions of 2 and 1 or 1 and elemental S in a short reaction time. Moreover, after keeping 4S or 4Se in THF solution for some days, 2 or [(TpMe2)2Y]+[Se2PPh2]- (5) was obtained by a disproportionation process. The mechanism for the construction of the Ph2PE- and Ph2PE2- (E = S, Se) ligands has been discussed based on the in situ NMR experiments and some designed reactions.
Reactivity Studies of Phosphinines: The Selenation of Diphenyl-Phosphine Substituents and Formation of a Chelating Bis(Phosphinine) Palladium(II) Complex

Abstract:Phosphinines and donor-substituted phosphinines are of recent interest due to their use in homogeneous catalysis. In this article, a Pd(II) bis(phosphinine) complex was characterised and phosphorus–selenium coupling constants were used to assess the donor properties of the diphenylphosphine substituents of phosphinine ligands to promote their further use in catalysis. The selenation of 2,5-bis(diphenylphosphino)-3,6-dimethylphosphinine (5) and 2-diphenylphosphino-3-methyl-6-trimethylsilylphosphinine (6) gave the corresponding phosphine selenides 8 and 9, respectively, leaving the phosphinine ring intact. Multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and single crystal X-ray diffraction confirmed the oxidation of all the diphenylphosphine substituents with 1JP-Se coupling constants determined to be similar to SePPh3, indicating that the phosphinine rings were electronically similar to phenyl substituents. Solutions of 6 were found to react with oxygen slowly to produce the phosphine oxide 10 along with other by-products. The reaction of [bis{3-methyl-6-(trimethylsilyl)phosphinine-2-yl}dimethylsilane] (4) with [PdCl2(COD)] gave the chelating dichloropalladium(II) complex, as determined by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and an elemental analysis. The molecular structure of the intermediate 2 in the formation of 4,6-di(tert-butyl)-1,3,2-diazaphosphinine (3) was also determined, which confirmed the structure of the diazaphosphacycle P(Cl){N=C(tBu)CH=C(tBu)-N(H)}.
1,3-Dipolar Cyclisation Reactions of Nitriles with Sterically Encumbered Cyclic Triphosphanes: Synthesis and Electronic Structure of Phosphorus-rich Heterocycles with Tunable Colour

Abstract:We describe the synthesis, solid state and electronic structures of a series of tunable five-membered cationic and chargeneutral inorganic heterocycles featuring a P3CN core. 1-aza-2,3,4-triphospholenium cations [(PR)3N(H)CR′]+, [1R]+ (R′ = Me, Ph, 4-MeOC6H4, 4-CF3C6H4) were formed as triflate salts by the formal [3+2]-cyclisation resctions of strained cyclic triphosphanes (PR)3 (R = tBu, 2,4,6-Me3C6H2 (Mes), 2,6‐iPr2C6H3 (Dipp), 2,4,6‐iPr3C6H2 (Tipp)) with nitriles R′CN in the presence of triflic acid. The corresponding neutral free bases (PR)3NCR′ (2R) were readily obtained by subsequent deprotonation with NEt3. The P3CN cores in 2R show an envelope conformation typical for cyclopentenes and present as yellow to orange compounds in the solid state as well as in solution depending on both substituents R and R' in (PR)3NCR′. The P3CN cores in [1R]+ show a significant deviation from planarity with increasing steric bulk of the R groups at phosphorus, which results in a decrease in the HOMO-LUMO gap and distinct low-energy UV-Visible absorption bands. This allows access to colours spanning red, blue, indigo, and magenta. TD-DFT calculations provide valuable insight into this phenomenon and indicate an intramolecular charge-transfer from the HOMO located on the P3 framework to the N=C-R′-based LUMO in the cationic species. The cations [1R]+ represent rare examples of phosphorus-rich heterocycles with tunable colour, which can be incorporated into polymers by post-polymerization modification to afford coloured polymers, which demonstrate utility as both proton and ammonia sensors.

Abstract:A new series of square-pyramidal coordination compounds L.Zn(acac)(2) (acac=acetylacetonate; L is a variety of substituted phenylthioureas: p-N,N'-dimethylaminophenylthiourea 1, p-methoxy-phenylthiourea 2, p-nitrophenylthiourea 3, p-acetylphenylthiourea 4) have been synthesized and characterized by H-1 NMR and IR spectra and elemental analysis. Most of these compounds exhibit wide transparent ranges in the visible region. Their electronic spectra have been studied experimentally, and theoretically by ZINDO/S calculation. The MOPAC software package has been used to evaluate their first-order molecular hyperpolarizabilities (beta). All beta values of the four coordination compounds are greater than or equal to those of p-nitroaniline, and are larger than beta values of their corresponding substituted phenthylthiourea ligands.

Abstract:A five-membered phosphoroheterocycle,5,5-dimethyl-2-(4'-methoxy)phenyl-1, 3,2-thiazaphospholidine-4-thione 2-sulfide, has been prepared by the reaction of Lawesson's reagent (LR) with alpha-hydroxyl isobutyronitrile, and its crystal structure was determined by X-ray diffraction method. The title compound (C11H14NOPS3) is triclinic with space group P (1) over bar, a = 6.8418 (9), b = 10.5467 (1), c = 11.5670 (2)Angstrom, alpha = 114.851 (2), beta = 100.291 (2), gamma = 91.390 (3)degrees, V = 740.7 (2)Angstrom(3), Z = 2, D-c = 1.360 g/cm(3), lambda = 0.71073 Angstrom, mu(MoKalpha) = 0.59 mm(-1), F(000) = 316. The Structure was refined to R = 0.0476, wR = 0.1272 for 2549 unique reflections with I >2sigma(I). It contains a phenyl ring and a 5-membered phosphoroheterocycle with the dihedral angle of 87.06 (9)degrees. The five atoms (P (1), N (1), C (1), C (2) and S (2)) of the heterocycle are nearly coplanar. In view of the unit cell it can be concluded that there exists an intermolecular hydrogen bond in the form of S-a----H-N (a: -X, -Y+1, -Z+1). The existence of d-p pibond between P (1) and N (1) was found as well as unsaturated property of N (1)-C (1) moiety.

Abstract:Phosphinidenes are heavy congeners of nitrenes that have been broadly used as in situ reagents in synthetic phosphorus chemistry and also serve as versatile ligands in coordination with transition metals. However, the detection of free phosphinidenes is largely challenged by their high reactivity and also the lack of suitable synthetic methods, rendering the knowledge about the fundamental properties of this class of low-valent phosphorus compounds limited. Recently, an increasing number of free phosphinidenes bearing prototype structural and bonding properties have been prepared for the first time, thus enabling the exploration of their distinct reactivity from the nitrene analogues. This Concept article will discuss the experimental approaches for the generation of the highly unstable phosphinidenes and highlight their distinct reactivity from the nitrogen analogues so as to stimuate future studies about their potential applications in phosphorus chemistry. Phosphinidenes are very reactive compounds containing a monocoordinated phosphorus atom, and this class of low-valent phosphorus compounds serves as versatile intermediates in synthetic phosphorus chemistry. In this Concept we will review the recent experimental progresses in probing the fundamental properties of the prototype phosphinidenes in the triplet and singlet state.image

Abstract:The highly reactive subphthalocyanine boron triflate complex ((subPc)BOTf) was isolated and characterized by X-ray diffraction and spectroscopic methods. The combination of (subPc)BOTf and bis(trimethylsilyl)amide (LiHMDS) yielded a “kinetically induced” frustrated Lewis pair system capable of activating a variety of substrates such as ethers, amides, and ketones. These reactions demonstrate the high reactivity of (subPc)BOTf toward organic molecules.
