Abstract:Thermal statistical models are simple and effective tool to describe particle production in high energy heavy ion collision. It is shown that for higher moments finite volume corrections become important observable quantities. They make possible to differentiate between different statistical ensembles even in the thermodynamic limit.

Abstract:A successful description of the particle ratios measured in heavy-ion collisions has been achieved in the framework of thermal models. In such a way, a large number of observables can be reproduced with a small number of parameters, namely the temperature, baryo-chemical potential and a factor measuring the degree of strangeness saturation. The comparison of experimental data at and the model estimations has made possible to define the thermodynamic parameters of strongly interacting matter at chemical freeze-out temperature. The detailed study of hadron and meson production including resonances using the statistical-thermal model is discussed. Their ratios are compared with the existing experimental data and predictions are made for pp and heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and LHC energies.

Bayesian inference of thermal effects in dense matter within the covariant density functional theory

Abstract:The high temperatures reached in a proto-neutron star or during the post-merger phase of a binary neutron star coalescence lead to non-negligible thermal effects on the equation of state (EOS) of dense nuclear matter. Here we study these effects within the covariant density functional theory employing the posteriors of a Bayesian inference, which encompasses a large sample of EOS models. Different densities and temperatures are considered. We find that for a number of quantities thermal effects are strongly correlated with the Dirac effective mass ($m^*$) of the nucleons and/or its logarithmic derivative as a function of density. These results can be explained within the low temperature approximation though they survive beyond this limit.

Abstract:The thermodynamic behavior of QCD matter at high temperature is currently studied by lattice QCD theory. The main features are the fast rise of the energy density ϵ around the critical temperature Tc and the large trace anomaly of the energy momentum tensor ⟨Θμμ⟩=ϵ-3P, which hints at a strongly interacting system. Such features can be accounted for by employing a massive quasiparticle model with a temperature-dependent bag constant. Recent lattice QCD calculations with physical quark masses by the Wuppertal-Budapest group show a slower increase of ϵ and a smaller ⟨Θμμ⟩ peak with respect to previous results from the HotQCD Collaboration. We investigate the implications of such differences from the point of view of a quasiparticle model, also discussing light and strange quark number susceptibilities. Furthermore, we predict the impact of these discrepancies on the temperature dependence of the transport properties of matter, like the shear and bulk viscosities.

On Extracting Thermal Parameters and Scenario in High-Energy Collisions

Abstract:In this minireview article, we examine the inconsistent results of thermal parameters derived from various models in high-energy collisions. Through a comprehensive literature review and based on the average transverse momentum or the root-mean-square transverse momentum, we propose model-independent parameters to address these inconsistencies. The relevant parameters include: the initial temperature, the effective temperature, the kinetic freeze-out temperature, and the average transverse velocity. Our findings indicate that these four parameters are larger in central collisions, within central rapidity regions, at higher energies, and in larger collision systems. As collision energy increases, excitation functions for all four parameters rise rapidly (slowly) within ranges below (above) approximately 7.7 GeV. At higher energies (>39) GeV, fluctuations occur in trends for these excitation functions, with only slight changes observed in their growth rates. Additionally, this work reveals a mass-dependent multi-temperature scenario pertaining to both initial states and kinetic freeze-out processes.

Abstract:The current status of various thermal and statistical descriptions of particle production in the ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions experiments is presented in detail. We discuss the formulation of various types of thermal models of a hot and dense hadron gas (HG) and the methods incorporated in the implementing of the interactions between hadrons. It includes our new excluded-volume model which is thermodynamically consistent. The results of the above models together with the experimental results for various ratios of the produced hadrons are compared. We derive some new universal conditions emerging at the chemical freeze-out of HG fireball showing independence with respect to the energy as well as the structure of the nuclei used in the collision. Further, we calculate various transport properties of HG such as the ratio of shear viscosity-to-entropy using our thermal model and compare with the results of other models. We also show the rapidity as well as transverse mass spectra of various hadrons in the thermal HG model in order to outline the presence of flow in the fluid formed in the collision. The purpose of this review article is to organize and summarize the experimental data obtained in various experiments with heavy-ion collisions and then to examine and analyze them using thermal models so that a firm conclusion regarding the formation of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) can be obtained.

Thermalization of Nuclear Matter in Heavy-Ion Collisions at Fermi-Energies

Abstract:We analyze the time evolution of the kinetic properties of nuclear matter produced in heavy-ion collisions at Fermi energies. The collision system is simulated using Constrained Molecular Dynamics (CoMD) transport calculations whose output is the isospin, position, and momentum of the nucleons. Focusing on central 35$\,$A$\cdot$MeV $^{40}$Ca+$^{40}$Ca collisions we utilize this information to extract localized momentum distributions in volume elements of 8$\,$fm$^3$ and time steps of 5$\,$fm/$c$. We then parameterize the single-particle momentum distributions with thermally motivated fit functions in the local rest frame of each cell. While the transverse-momentum distributions are well reproduced by thermal ones, the longitudinal ones carry a marked imprint of the initial nuclear motion which we capture by introducing a centroid motion into our fit functions. In particular, we find that Fermi distributions yield significantly better fits than Boltzmann ones, a consequence of the Pauli blocking implemented in CoMD. From the fits we extract the time dependence of the thermodynamic and collective properties of the excited nuclear medium. We find that the transverse temperature gradually rises to about 6$\,$MeV, which is accompanied by a dissipation of the initial centroid motion of the incoming nuclei which vanishes at about 100$\,$fm/$c$ after initial impact. We are therefore able to track the transition of beam energy into random kinetic energy for nucleons, suggesting a three-dimensional equilibration of energy in the late stages of the collision.

Abstract:The effects of a finite system volume on thermodynamic quantities, such as the pressure, energy density, specific heat, speed of sound, conserved charge susceptibilities, and correlations, in hot and dense strongly interacting matter are studied within the parity-doublet chiral mean field model. Such an investigation is motivated by relativistic heavy-ion collisions, which create a blob of hot QCD matter of a finite volume, consisting of strongly interacting hadrons and potentially deconfined quarks and gluons. The effect of the finite volume of the system is incorporated by introducing lower momentum cutoffs in the momentum integrals appearing in the model, the numerical value of the momentum cutoff being related to the de Broglie wavelength of the given particle species. It is found that some of these quantities show a significant volume dependence, in particular, those sensitive to pion degrees of freedom, and the crossover transition is generally observed to become smoother in finite volume. Abstract:Statistical hadronization models are extremly succesful in describing measured ratios of hadrons produced in heavy-ion collisions for a wide range of beam energies from SIS to RHIC. Using the idea of statistical hadronization at the phase boundary within the framework of a recently proposed dynamical model for the thermodynamics of fireballs, we establish a relation between the equation of state (EoS) in the partonic phase probed at the phase transition temperature T_C and the measured hadron ratios. In this way, the ratios can be predicted parameter-free. We demonstrate that this framework gives a consistent description of conditions both at SPS and RHIC. As the data on dilepton emission from heavy ion collisions give evidence for strong in-medium modifications of hadronic properties, we schematically investigate the sensitivity of our results to such modifications and qualitatively sketch a consistent scenario involving such in-medium effects.

Abstract:We develop the heat kernel method in the context of finite temperature quantum field theory. We compute the heat kernel expansion in the presence of general gauge and scalar fields which may be non Abelian and non stationary. The Polyakov loop appears at finite temperature as a new gauge covariant operator. We apply this method in the computation of the fully gauge invariant effective action of QCD in the regime of high temperature. It is obtained the dimensionally reduced effective action of QCD as well. In the context of chiral quark models, in particular the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio and the spectral quark model, we apply this method to compute the low-energy chiral Lagrangian at finite temperature. The coupling of the Polyakov loop with these models allows to solve some inconsistencies appearing in the standard treatment at finite temperature: generation of multi-quark states, large $N_c$ counting, etc. On the other hand, we show that recent available lattice data for the renormalized Polyakov loop above the deconfinement phase transition exhibit unequivocal inverse power temperature corrections driven by a dimension 2 gluon condensate. This simple ansatz provides a good overall description of the data throughout the deconfinement phase until near the critical temperature with just two parameters. Finally, we study several chiral quark models in the light of chiral perturbation theory in curved space-time. The low energy structure of the energy momentum tensor in these models with SU(3) flavor symmetry is analyzed in the presence of external gravitational fields.

Abstract:This work aim to study the various thermal characteristics of nuclei in view of the saturation and critical behavior of infinite nuclear matter. The free energy of a nucleus is parametrized using the density and temperature-dependent liquid-drop model and interaction among nucleons is worked out within the effective relativistic mean-field theory (E-RMF). The effective mass (m,$^*$) and critical temperature of infinite symmetric nuclear matter ($T_c$) of a given E-RMF parameter force play a seminal role in the estimation of thermal properties. A larger (m$^*$) and $T_c$ of the E-RMF set estimate larger excitation energy, level density, and limiting temperature $(T_l)$ for a given nucleus. The limiting temperature of a nucleus also depends on the behavior of the nuclear gas surrounding the nucleus, making the equation of state (EoS) at subsaturation densities an important input. A stiff EoS in the subsaturation region estimates a higher pressure of the nuclear gas making it less stable. Since the $T_c$ plays an important part in these calculations, we perform a Pearson correlation statistical study of fifteen E-RMF parameter sets, satisfying the relevant constraint on EoS. Effective mass seems to govern the thermal characteristics of infinite as well as finite nuclear matter in the framework of E-RMF theory.

Finite-temperature quarkyonic matter with an excluded volume model

Abstract:<p>We introduce a theoretical framework to analyze the thermal properties of a recently proposed "excluded volume" model of quarkyonic matter. This entails proposing finite temperature distribution functions and entropy functionals constrained by internal theoretical consistency. We use the formalism developed here to analyze the effect of temperature on the quark onset as a function of baryon density. We find that the baryon density at which the quarkyonic phase emerges decreases only slightly with temperature, an effect produced by large <span class="math"><math>Nc</math></span>. We furthermore find that a finite temperature increases the density of quarks produced. The framework presented here can be used to compute the equation of state of hot and dense quarkyonic matter which is of relevance to neutron star mergers.</p>

Abstract:In this thesis we discuss three separate analysis of various phenomenological aspects of heavy-ion collisions (HIC). The first one is a possible generalization of the kinetic theory framework for dense systems. We investigate its long-time behaviour and the properties of the equilibrium. The second discussion is about the phenomenological analysis of the azimuthal asymmetry of the particle yields in a HIC, where we link the initial stage geometrical asymmetry to the particle yields and examine the possible organizing mechanisms that could be responsible for such a relation. The third, and also the most thorough part of the thesis is about the relation of the spectral density of quasi-particle states and the macroscopic fluidity measure (the ratio of shear viscosity and the entropy density) and other transport properties of the system. We extensively study the liquid-gas crossover with the help of model spectral functions. The main conclusion is that the relative intensification of the continuum of the scattering states compared to the quasi-particle peak makes the matter more fluent.

Abstract:The thermalization process is studied in an expanding parton gas using the Boltzmann equation with two types of collision terms. In the relaxation time approximation we determine the criteria under which a time-dependent relaxation time leads to thermalization of the partons. We calculate the entropy production due to collisions for the general time-dependent relaxation time. In a perturbative QCD approach on the other hand, we can estimate the parton collision time and its dependence on expansion time. The effective `out of equilibrium' collision time differs from the standard transport relaxation time, $\tau_{\rm tr}\simeq(\alpha_s^2\ln(1/\alpha_s)T)^{-1}$, by a weak time dependence. It is in both cases Debye screening and Landau damping that regulate the singular forward scattering processes. We find that the parton gas does thermalize eventually but only after having undergone a phase of free streaming and gradual equilibration where considerable entropy is produced (``after-burning"). The final entropy and thus particle density depends on the collision time as well as the initial conditions (a ``memory effect"). Results for entropy production are presented based upon various model estimates of early parton production.
Nucleonic models at finite temperature with in-medium effective fields

Abstract:We perform a calculation of dense and hot nuclear matter where the mean interaction between nucleons is described by in-medium effective fields and where we employ analytical approximations of the Fermi integrals. We generalize a previous work where we have addressed the case of the Fermi gas model with in-medium effective mass. In the present work, we fully treat the in-medium interaction by considering both its contribution to the in-medium effective fields, which can be subsumed by the mass in some cases, and to the potential term. Our formalism is general and could be applied to relativistic and nonrelativistic approaches. It is illustrated for different popular models -- Skyrme, nonlinear, and density-dependent relativistic mean-field models --, but also for the metamodel, and it provides a clear understanding of the in-medium correction to the pressure, which is present in the case of the Skyrme and metamodel but is not for the relativistic ones. For the Fermi integrals, we compare the analytical approximation to the, so-called, ``exact'' numerical calculations in order to quantitatively estimate the accuracy of the approximation.
