Abstract:Aim This study aims to assess the relationship between workplace ostracism and the procrastination behavior of nurses, as well as examine the effect of organizational silence on this relationship. Background Controlling workplace ostracism and eradicating time wasters, especially procrastination behavior among nurses, are key strategies that add value to organizational effectiveness. In addition, remaining silent about significant issues facing nurses is a devastating approach to the success of both healthcare organizations and the nursing profession. Method A cross‐sectional descriptive correlational exploratory research design was used to conduct the study. Data were collected from 352 nurses recruited from three large university hospitals in Alexandria, Egypt. Four instruments, namely, the Workplace Ostracism Questionnaire, the Organizational Silence Scale, the Active Procrastination Scale, and the Unintentional Procrastination Scale, were used. Structural equation modeling was used to test the hypothesized relationships among the variables. Results The findings demonstrated a significant positive and moderate association between workplace ostracism and both active and passive procrastination behaviors among nurses. Moreover, there was a strong positive and significant correlation between organizational silence and workplace ostracism. The results of mediation revealed that the indirect effect of workplace ostracism on both active and passive procrastination behavior through organizational silence was statistically significant, suggesting that organizational silence partially mediated this relationship. Conclusion The study highlighted the ongoing challenges posed by toxic workplace issues, such as organizational ostracism and silence, as significant factors contributing to nurses' procrastination behaviors. Not only do these factors directly impact nurses' productivity, but they also interact to exacerbate negative outcomes in nursing care. Addressing these toxic dynamics is critical to improving nurse performance and ensuring quality care in healthcare settings. Implications for nursing and health policy This study offers new insights for navigating toxicity and upgrading nursing productivity in healthcare organizations through fostering a more inclusive and communicative work environment. Promoting team cohesion and ensuring that all staff members feel valued and included can reduce feelings of isolation that may lead to procrastination. Also, creating safe spaces for nurses to voice concerns without fear of reprisal could significantly diminish passive procrastination, which ultimately enhances overall patient care quality and organizational efficiency.Â

Abstract:Background: There is increasing research interest in the relationship between ethical leadership and deviant workplace behaviour. Ethical leadership encompasses altruism, courage, ethical orientation, integrity and fairness. Examples of deviant workplace behaviours include theft, fraud, sabotage, assault, abuse, manipulation and bullying. It appears that when leaders are fair and emphasise ethical conduct, followers are less inclined to engage in deviant workplace behaviour. Aim: To investigate the relationship between nurses' self-rated levels of deviant workplace behaviour and perceived levels of ethical leadership in managers. Method: For this descriptive correlational study, 355 nurses from one university hospital in Egypt responded to an online questionnaire comprising the Ethical Leadership Scale and the Workplace Deviance Behavior Scale. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to explore results and examine the relationships between study variables. Results: There was a statistically significant negative relationship between respondents' self-rated levels of deviant workplace behaviour and their perceptions of levels of ethical leadership in managers. The results appeared to confirm previous research. Nurses who feel that they are treated fairly by their managers tend to have positive attitudes towards work, colleagues and management. Conclusion: Ethical leadership on the part of managers is a significant determinant of nurses' behaviour in the workplace and should therefore be fostered by healthcare organisations.

Abstract:This study aimed to elaborate on the mechanism by which workplace ostracism influences turnover intention through exploring the sequential mediation effects of emotional labour and nurse-patient relationship. Using a sample of 379 nurses collected from a time-lag survey in a tertiary public hospital in China, we applied structural equation modelling techniques to test our hypothesized model. Our findings revealed that workplace ostracism positively influenced surface acting and deep acting. Workplace ostracism influenced turnover intention through the sequential mediation of surface acting and nurse-patient relationship. The findings of this study imply that nurses should receive education and training in emotional management skills to deal with workplace ostracism. Besides, fostering positive nurse-patient relationships may help reduce nurses' turnover intention.
Relationship between workplace spirituality with organization-based self-esteem and workplace deviant behaviors among Iranian nurses

Abstract:Abstract Background Despite the numerous studies conducted on workplace spirituality, there is still lack of studies that have explored the relationship between workplace spirituality with organization-based self-esteem and workplace deviant behaviors. This study aims to examine the relationship between workplace spirituality with organization-based self-esteem and workplace deviant behaviors among Iranian nurses. Methods 236 nurses from 5 hospitals participated in this descriptive, analytical, and cross-sectional study from August to December 2022. Data was gathered by four questionnaires: demographic information, workplace spirituality, organization-based self-steam, and workplace deviant behaviors. The data were analyzed by SPSS 26 based on descriptive and inferential statistics (Independent Two-sample t Test, Pearson correlation coefficient and multiple regression). Results Based on the findings, nurses had a moderate level of perception of workplace spirituality and organization-based self-esteem while having a low level of perception regarding the occurrence of workplace deviate behaviors. Results of Pearson correlation coefficient test showed a positive and statistically significant relationship between workplace spirituality and organization-based self-esteem. Additionally, there was an inverse and significant relationship between workplace spirituality and organization-based self-esteem with workplace deviant behaviors. Results of multiple regression analyses indicate that by controlling the demographic characteristics of nurses, the meaningful work and sense of community have a significant relationship with organization-based self-esteem. Furthermore, by controlling the demographic characteristics of nurses, permanent employment status, sense of community, alignment with the organization’s values, and organization-based self-esteem have a significant relationship with workplace deviant behavior. Conclusions The study suggests that organizations must prioritize promoting workplace spirituality and organization-based self-esteem to ensure a healthy work environment and prevent workplace deviant behaviors.

Abstract:Nursing Ethics, Ahead of Print. Background: Although research has established that the work environment significantly shapes nurses' ethical behavior, it's less clear whether decent work could influence ethical ideologies of nurses. Aim: To investigate the decent work conditions and ethical ideologies of nurses, and to analyze whether decent work influences their ethical ideologies. Methods: A multicenter cross-sectional survey was conducted among 203 nurses working in three tertiary governmental hospitals across two cities in Egypt. We utilized the Scale of Decent Work, which consists of 15 items distributed across five dimensions, to assess the level of decent work conditions. Additionally, the Ethics Position Questionnaire, containing 20 items divided into two categories—idealism and relativism—was used to evaluate the ethical ideologies of nurses. Pearson correlation and linear regression analyses were applied to analyze the data. Ethical considerations: Ethical approval from the ethics committee, institutional permission, and informed consent from the participants were obtained for data collection. Results: The findings indicated that the levels of decent work conditions were moderate, while the ethical ideologies of nurses were relatively high. Stepwise multiple linear regression analyses revealed that the idealism of nurses was significantly predicted by two dimensions of decent work—organizational values, and hours allowing for free time and rest—along with the overall decent work score. Meanwhile, the relativism of nurses was significantly predicted by the presence of physically and interpersonally safe working conditions. Conclusions: Nurses experiencing decent work conditions characterized by high organizational values and adequate hours for free time and rest are more inclined to adopt idealistic ethical ideology. Meanwhile, those experiencing physically and interpersonally safe working conditions tend to embrace relativistic ethical ideology. Implications for clinical practice: Identifying the relationship between decent work conditions and the ethical ideologies of nurses can assist hospital administrators in fostering work conditions that promote appropriate ethical ideologies among nurses.

Abstract:Purpose Abusive supervision (AS) provides insights into the darker aspects of leadership behavior and its effects on employees. Understanding and addressing AS can contribute to creating healthier work environments and promoting employee well-being. The effect of abusive leadership (AS) on counterproductive work behaviors (CWB) in nursing staff is examined through the theoretical lens of the social exchange theory. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected from 302 nursing staff working at public and private hospitals through a self-administered questionnaire. Measurement scales were adapted from the literature and the data were tested for validity and reliability before performing hypotheses testing through structural equation modeling in SmartPLS 4.0. Findings AS positively affects CWB, and psychological contract breach mediates this relationship. However, employees with high Islamic work ethics (IWE) are less concerned with supervisors' dysfunctional behaviors and pay less attention to them; thus, IWE buffers the effect of AS on CWBs. Originality/value A positive and supportive organizational climate is crucial for attracting and retaining skilled healthcare professionals. When healthcare professionals are subjected to abusive behaviors, their ability to share knowledge, adopt safety protocols and provide the best patient care may be hampered. Therefore, addressing AS in hospitals is vital to promoting a positive work environment, enhancing employee well-being and improving patient care.

Abstract:Introduction: Hospitals are challenged to achieve highly patient outcomes while facing mounting financial constraints. Studies of high-performing organizations suggest that one key to success is an engaged workforce that acts proactively to resolve performance problems. Aim: Explore head nurses' interpersonal relationships and it’s effect on work engagement and proactive work behavior. Study design: A descriptive correlational. Setting: This study was conducted in all departments at Assuit University Hospitals includes (Main Hospital, Pediatric Hospital, Women's Health Hospital). Subject and Method: The study subject consisted of (88) head nurse working in all departments of selected Hospitals. The data collected through self – administered questionnaire which includes personal characteristics data, Relational Coordination, Utrecht Work Engagement and Proactive Work Behavior Scale. Results: There was statistically significant relation between interpersonal relationships among head nurses, nurse administrators & physicians with work engagement and proactive work behavior. There was statistically significant relation between work engagement and proactive work behavior. Conclusion: There was a positive correlation between interpersonal relationships with work engagement and proactive work behavior. Recommendations: Implement continuous training programs for the different categories of health care providers to improve interpersonal relationships and work engagement &proactive work behavior.

Abstract:Purpose: This study aims to investigate the relationships between workplace spirituality, organizational citizenship behavior (OCB), and affective organizational commitment among nurses, and whether affective commitment mediates the relationship between workplace spirituality and OCB. Methods: In the present correlational study, a cross-sectional design was employed, and data were collected using a questionnaire-based survey. Based on the random sampling, 305 nurses were chosen and questionnaires were distributed among respondents in four public and general hospitals located in Kerman, Iran. To analyze the data descriptive statistics, Pearson coefficient, simple and multiple regression, and path analyses were also conducted. Findings: Workplace spirituality has a positive influence on nurses' OCB and affective commitment. Workplace spirituality explained 16% of the variation in OCB, while it explained 35% of the variation in affective commitment among nurses. Moreover, affective organizational commitment mediated the impact of workplace spirituality on OCB. Conclusions: Workplace spirituality predicts nurses' OCB and affective organizational commitment. It emphasizes benefits from the new perspective of workplace spirituality, particularly among nurses who need to be motivated in their work. Clinical relevance: This study illustrates that there are potential benefits owing to the positive influence of workplace spirituality on OCB and affective commitment among nurses. Managers of nursing services should consider workplace spirituality and its positive influence on nurses' outcomes in order to improve their performance and, subsequently, the healthcare system.

Abstract:Background: This theoretical model has been drawn on principles of social exchange theory to scrutinize the connection between organizational virtuousness and job performance with the mediating role of Organizational citizenship behavior and moderating role of workplace ostracism. A survey was conducted in Pakistan, gathering data from 486 employees working for various private and commercial banks. Method: Soft and hard questionnaires were distributed to the participants, with social media platforms used for the soft questionnaires and meetings with employees for the hard questionnaires. A 7-point Likert scale was employed in data collection, and measures for the variables were adapted from reliable and valid sources. A demographic analysis was performed to summarize the sample collected from participants. The demographics results were analyzed using SPSS, while the measurement model and path analysis were conducted using Structural Equational Modeling with Smart PLS-4. Results: The study's findings showed a significant and positive relationship between organizational virtuousness and job performance, with organizational citizenship behavior serving as a mediator. Additionally, a negative moderation of workplace ostracism was observed in the mediation of organizational citizenship behavior toward the relationship between organizational virtuousness and job performance. Conclusion: The study's results contribute to the implementation of social exchange theory and related concepts in the banking sector of Pakistan, providing practical guidance for implementing virtuous practices within organizations and discouraging ostracism in banks to enhance overall performance. The study suggests that policies regarding the implementation of virtuous practices in organizations can be established, and workplace ostracism can be avoided by providing a platform for social gatherings and training employees. Managers should adopt appropriate leadership styles and relevant communication patterns to impact the organizational climate which can also help reduce the influence of ostracism in the organization. Additionally, a complaint cell should be established with complete confidentiality to reduce ostracism.

Abstract:Background: Ethical leadership has meaningful influence on the attitudes and ethicalconduct of nurses and increased sense of perceived organizational support from hospital anddecreased engagement in deviant workplace behaviors. Aim of study: Was to assess ethicalleadership, deviant workplace behaviors and itʼs relation to perceived organizational support amongnurses. Design: A descriptive correlational research design was utilized. Setting: The study wasconducted in Critical Care Units at Benha University Hospitals. Sample: Convenient sample of allavailable nurses (230) nurses with at least three years of experience was included in study. Tools:Three tools were used for data collection. I: Ethical leadership scale, II: Deviant workplacebehaviors scale and III: Perceived organizational support questionnaire. Results: More than half(52.6) of nurses had moderate ethical leadership perception level, the majority of nurses (89.6%)had negative prevalence of deviant workplace behaviors perception level and more than half(55.7%) of nurse were had moderate perceived organizational support level. Conclusion: There wasa negative statistically significant correlation between ethical leadership perception level anddeviant workplace behaviors perception level and between deviant workplace behaviors perceptionlevel and perceived organizational support level. Additionally, there was a positive statisticallysignificant correlation between ethical leadership perception level and perceived organizationalsupport level. Recommendation: Put hospital management system for rewarding and supportingnurses who behave ethically and serving as ethical role models by providing different kinds ofbonuses and incentives, create hospital management strategies that promote supportive workenvironment and reduce workplace deviance behaviors such as rewards, flexible work schedules,fair pay and benefits, safe working conditions, and training. Workplace Spirituality, Compassion Satisfaction, Burnout, and Secondary Traumatic Stress: A Cross-Sectional Study in Iranian Nurses

Abstract:Purpose. This study aimed to (1) assess the levels and associations of workplace spirituality (WPS), compassion satisfaction (CS), burnout (BO), and secondary traumatic stress (STS) among Iranian nurses; and (2) identify the impact of WPS components on CS, BO, and STS while controlling for demographic variables. Design and Methods. In this descriptive, cross‐sectional, and correlational study, 295 nurses were selected via proportionate stratified sampling from five hospitals affiliated with the Arak University of Medical Sciences in Iran from June 2022 to December 2022. The scale of workplace spirituality and Professional Quality of Life version 5 (ProQOL-5) were used for data collection. Data were analyzed using SPSS24 and descriptive and inferential statistics (Pearson correlation coefficient and multiple regression). Findings. The mean scores of WPS, CS, BO, and STS were 63.27, 36.55, 27.31, and 29.58, respectively. The highest percentages of nurses reported moderate CS, BO, and STS levels, reaching rates of 76.3%, 80%, and 86.1%, respectively. The Pearson correlation coefficient showed that CS had a negative relationship with BO and STS. There was a direct correlation between BO and STS. Participants who reported higher levels of WPS had higher CS and lower BO scores. Results of multiple regression analyses indicate that the model of WPS components and control variables explains 42.7, 34, and 8.6 percent of the variance of CS, BO, and STS, respectively. Higher “meaningful work” is associated with higher CS and lower BO and STS among nurses. Participants higher in “sense of community” had higher CS scores. Higher “alignment with organizational values” is associated with higher STS. Practice Implications. According to the study results, it is possible to provide a suitable platform for improving nurses’ professional quality of life by strengthening workplace spirituality.

Relationship among organizational cynicism, perceived job insecurity and nurses’ work role performance

Abstract:Background and objective: Organizational cynicism is undesirable attitude that is reported to have a negative impact on employee security and performance. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship among staff nurses' levels of organizational cynicism, perceived job insecurity and work role performance.Methods: Descriptive correlational design was used to conduct this study. The study was conducted at a large university hospital, Egypt. Convenience sampling technique was employed to select (205) staff nurses. Three tools were used: Organizational Cynicism Scale, job insecurity scale, and Work role performance scale.Results: Organizational cynicism level was high, job insecurity level was moderate whereas nurses' work role performance was low. Organizational cynicism and all of its' three dimensions i.e. affective, cognition & behavioral had significant and positive relationship with job insecurity and negative with work role performance Also, there was a significant negative relationship between perceived job insecurity and work role performance.Conclusion: There were significant relationships among organizational cynicism, job insecurity and work role performance and theses three variables differed in relation to demographic characteristics of participants.

Abstract:Workplace bullying has become a major challenge for organizations across the globe as it relates to long-term negative workplace outcomes. Past studies have identified leadership as a predictor of reducing workplace bullying, however, studies on the mechanism between the same are scant. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the mediating role of resilience and the moderating role of Islamic work ethics between ethical leadership and workplace bullying. The data for this study were collected from nurses working in the Pakistani healthcare sector as they are the victims of bullying because of a number of reasons. First, In Pakistan, patient/nurse ratio is very high (a single nurse has to face almost 25 patients). Second, doctor to nurse ratio is also very high (1:5). The study collected data from 284 nurses of both public and private sector hospitals through a questionnaire-based survey. Hypotheses of the study were examined through structural equation modeling using AMOS and the results revealed a negative impact of ethical leader on bullying. In addition, resilience was noted as explanatory variable and Islamic work ethics was noted to weaken the association between ethical leader and bullying. Most of the nurses’ staff in Pakistan are female, so results may be gender-biased. The model of this study is based on social learning theory and Islamic work ethics has not previously been studied in this perspective.

Abstract:Introduction The nursing literature is silent about the relationship between ethical leadership, nurses’ flourishing, and extra-role behavior. This study was carried out to contribute to the relevant field research. Objective The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between nurses’ perceptions of their nursing managers’ ethical leadership behavior, nurses’ flourishing, and their extra-role behavior. Methods This was a cross-sectional study involving 302 nurses from six hospitals in Damietta City, Egypt. Data were collected using the following three self-report scales: Ethical Leadership at Work questionnaire, Flourishing Scale, and extra-role behavior scale. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistical, Pearson correlation, regression analysis and the structure equation model. Results There was a significant positive relationship between nursing managers’ ethical leadership, nurses’ flourishing, and extra-role behavior. The regression analysis showed that the ethical leadership of nursing managers and nurses’ flourishing predict extra-role behavior. Conclusion Nurses with a high level of flourishing and who work with a manager exhibiting ethical leadership behavior are more likely to activate extra-role behavior. Hence, it is recommended that nursing managers embrace an ethical approach in their leadership practices and promote flourishing among nurses to encourage them to go the extra the mile in their jobs.

Abstract:Background: Worldwide, work stress among care professionals, nurses in particular, is a major concern in health care systems; it is linked to high rates of job dissatisfaction, burnout, absenteeism, turnover, and stress-related illness, thus placing job performance among nurses’ and patients’ lives at risk. Setting: conducted at the Minia Health Insurance Hospital. Subjects: all nursing staff at the time of data collection (no=249). Data collection tools: data was collected by using two tools; as self-administered questionnaire consisted of part one socio-demographic data and part two work stress, tool two was organizational socialization. Results: the study showed that more than two-thirds of nursing staff have total moderate level of work stress and more than one quarter had high level; also, more than half of nursing staff have high score level of total organizational socialization, and less than half of nursing staff have moderate level score of organizational socialization. Conclusion: there was a negative weak association between work stress and organizational social relations among nurses. Recommendation: nurses should have training session regarding coping strategies with stress and support each other in their work to decrease their stress.

Abstract:Toxic leadership is abusive, destructive, and detrimental to nurses, can decrease nurse morale, increase stress levels, diminish organizational performance, and cause employee emotional exhaustion. Emotional exhaustion, a key component of burnout, has been linked to decreased job performance and increased likelihood of engaging in deviant behaviors at work. Organizational cynicism, as a negative attitude or distrust towards the organization and its leadership, may exacerbate the relationship between toxic leadership and workplace deviance. This study aims to explore how toxic leadership, workplace deviance, emotional exhaustion, and organizational cynicism are interrelated in the nursing profession.

Abstract:The complexity and incessant change in the corporatised health care workplace has influenced nurses' work choices, morale, quality of work-life and the wellbeing of patients. Thus, there is an urgent moral imperative to improve the quality of work-life for nurses. To this end, it is crucial to re-define progress beyond the sole economic markers of success and profit in the health care workplace. This paper argues for the identification of ethical markers and indicators of organisational success based on bridging and linking social capital which could be used to re-organise health care organisations, hence crafting inclusive moral spaces where nurses can safely work and provide quality care for patients. Social and ethical evaluation is well suited to examine current workplace dilemmas from a psychosocial perspective and provide a framework for best practice in building capacity in effective social relations and family friendly, ethical workplaces.

Abstract:Background: Organizational justice is pivotal in fostering a fair and supportive workplace culture, which strengthens the connections between managers and nurses, among nurses themselves, and ultimately, between nurses and their patients. Assessing the perceived levels of organizational justice and managerial behaviors can identify key areas for improving nurses' commitment and loyalty, while simultaneously reducing incidents of workplace bullying. Purpose: This study aims to investigate how bedside nurses perceive organizational justice, nurse managers' caring behaviors, and their exposure to workplace bullying. Additionally, it seeks to explore the relationship between organizational justice, nurse managers' caring behaviors, and nurses' perceived exposure to workplace bullying. Methods: A descriptive-correlational study was conducted in the inpatient care unit of a Saudi hospital. A convenience sample of 256 nurses participated, completing the Organizational Justice Questionnaire (OJQ), the Caring Factor Survey: Caring of the Manager (CFS-CM), and the Negative Acts Questionnaire-Revised (NAQ-R). The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and regression analysis. Results: Descriptive statistics revealed moderate levels of perceived organizational justice and managerial caring behaviors among nurses, alongside low reported exposure to workplace bullying. Significant correlations were found among the studied variables, indicating that higher perceived organizational justice was associated with higher managerial caring and lower workplace bullying (p < 0.05). Mediation analysis demonstrated a significant indirect effect of organizational justice on workplace bullying through the mediating role of nurse managers' caring behaviors (a×b = -0.0652, p < 0.001). Furthermore, the direct effect of organizational justice on workplace bullying remained significant even when accounting for the mediator (c = -0.5509, p < 0.001). Conclusion: This study highlights the vital role of organizational justice and managerial caring in cultivating a positive work environment and mitigating workplace bullying. Implementing clear policies and procedures while promoting fairness and equality in resource allocation, decision-making processes, and interactions are essential strategies for fostering positive attitudes and work behaviors among nurses.
Emotional Labor As a Mediator Between Workplace Ostracism and Emotional Exhaustion in Nursing Professionals

Abstract:Objective To explore the mediation role of emotional labor in the relationship between workplace ostracism and emotional exhaustion, aiming to provide practical implications to manage workplace ostracism. Methods Using time-lagged survey, a total of 370 valid responses were collected at two time points from the nurses in a general hospital in Chengdu, including the data of demographics, workplace ostracism, emotional labor and emotional exhaustion. Structural equation model (SEM) was employed to test the relationships. Results The means of key variables were: workplace ostracism 1.30 (1.00, 1.73)，surface acting 1.50 (1.00,2.25), deep acting 3.00 (1.33, 4.00), and emotional exhaustion 3.53 (2.60, 4.20). There was a significant positive relationship between workplace ostracism and surface acting (P<0.01), just as well as the relationship with deep acting and emotional exhaustion (P<0.01). Surface acting led to emotional exhaustion of nurses (P<0.01) and mediated the positive relationship between workplace ostracism and emotional exhaustion. Deep acting was not significantly related to emotional exhaustion (P>0.05). SEM analysis demonstrated an acceptable and reasonable model fit. Conclusions The surveyed nurses reported a medium and low level of perceived workplace ostracism and emotional labor, but a high level of emotional exhaustion. Workplace ostracism has a positive effect on nurses' emotional exhaustion via surface acting. Hospital administration should take measure to prevent and intervene in workplace ostracism, provide organizational and supervisory supports to nurses, and particularly enhance nurse's emotional management skills and encourage use of deep acting strategy to minimize the detrimental effects of workplace ostracism.
