Abstract:This paper reports that the transition metals (TM), including Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn, are substituted in a perfect zigzag (8, 0) boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) at B-site and N-site to improve the adsorption performance of intrinsic BNNTs towards oil-dissolved gases (H2, CH4, and C2H2), particularly C2H2. In this regard, the quantum chemical calculations are performed based on the density functional theory (DFT). The results show that the C2H2 gas adsorption characteristic of BNNTs is selectively enhanced due to the intervention of the TM atom. The CoB, NiB, CuB, ZnB, and ZnN are preliminarily selected as potential gas sensors for C2H2 gas based on their suitable range of adsorption energy. The sensitivity, selectivity, and recovery time of the above five structures are compared. It is found that NiB is a superior sensing material with exceptionally high sensitivity and selectivity. Moreover, the NiB presented preferable desorption properties for C2H2 gas at room temperature, making it promising for a chemical resistance-type gas sensing device. The analysis of charge transfer and density of states illustrates that the NiB donates electrons to C2H2, proving its superiority over the adsorption properties for C2H2 gas over H2 and CH4. The suitable recovery time (2.3 s), extremely high gas response value (494383%), and stable chemisorption demonstrate that the Ni-doped BNNTs at B-site can be a superior chemical gas sensor for C2H2 gas at room temperature.

Abstract:We have studied the adsorption of gas molecules (CO, NO, NO2, O-2, N-2, CO2, and NH3) on graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) using first principles methods. The adsorption geometries, adsorption energies, charge transfer, and electronic band structures are obtained. We find that the electronic and transport properties of the GNR with an-nchair-shaped edges are sensitive to the adsorption of NH3, and the system exhibits n-type semiconducting behavior after NH3 adsorption. Other gas molecules have little effect on modifying the conductance of GNRs. Quantum transport calculations further indicate that NH3 molecules can be detected out of these gas molecules by the GNR-based sensor.

Abstract:Boron nitride (BN) has gradually emerged as a significant focus of research due to its unique physical and chemical properties. Over the past few years, substantial advancements have been achieved in the domains of gas adsorption and sensing, driven by improvements in modification technology and a deeper understanding of gas sensing mechanisms. BN-based nanomaterials have been instrumental in these advancements. The application of some properties of BN in the fabrication of gas sensing components is anticipated to lead to new breakthroughs. Furthermore, BN is projected to become one of the most promising materials for high-performance gas sensors, owing to its high thermal stability, chemical stability, and exceptional mechanical properties. While numerous review articles have been published regarding BN, primarily focusing on its synthesis, properties, and functionalities, few have made significant contributions to the realm of gas adsorption and detection through theoretical calculations and practical applications. This review comprehensively examines the integration of BN with various gas adsorption and sensing techniques, covering aspects such as model development, theoretical computations, material synthesis, and real-world applications. These methods provide valuable insights into the potential of BN for gas sensing applications. Furthermore, the paper discusses the challenges encountered in utilizing BN-based gas sensors and offers recommendations for overcoming these challenges. Finally, the future prospects for the advancement of BN-based gas sensors are considered, highlighting new possibilities and areas for improvement within this field.

Abstract:Abstract Density functional theory calculations have been made to investigated the adsorption and sensing properties of harmful nitrogen oxides (NO, NO2) on rhodium (Rh) doped hexagonal boron nitride (BN) to explore the feasibility of Rh-doped BN (Rh-BN) based gas sensor. For each gas molecule, various adsorption positions and orientations were examined. The favorable adsorption configuration has been established and the corresponding adsorption energy has been calculated. Besides, to understand the adsorption mechanism, The properties such as electron density, the energy band structure, state density of states, and charge transfer of the adsorption system were investigated in greater detail. The calculations indicate that the most stable structure is that the Rh atom located directly above the N atom, and a stable chemical bond with a length of 2.096 Å formed between the Rh atom and N atom, with a significant binding energy (Eb) of -1.561 eV. Then, adsorption performance of Rh-BN monolayer upon nitrogen oxides is in order as NO2 > NO, with the adsorption energy (Ea) of -3.919 eV and -3.318 eV, respectively. This indicates that the Rh-BN single layer possesses ideal adsorption and sensing properties. Furthermore, by doping the Rh atom, many levels of impurities are introduced into the intrinsic BN band structure, thereby improving the interaction between BN and adsorbed gas molecules. Following adsorption of NO and NO2, the band gap (Eg) of the doping system is wider. It has been demonstrated that gas adsorption reduces the electrical conductivity of the system, but increases the sensitivity of the system. The above calculation and analysis are of great importance for the exploration of the Rh-BN single layer as innovative gas detection material.
Chemical functionalization of BN graphene with the metal-arene group: A theoretical study

Abstract:Chemical functionalization of BN graphene allows wider flexibility in engineering its electronic and magnetic properties as well as its chemical reactivity, thus making it have potential applications in many fields. In the present work, the chemical functionalization of BN graphene with six different metal-arenes (MC6H6, M = Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, and Co) has been studied systematically by performing density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Particular attention is paid to searching for the most stable configurations, calculating the corresponding binding energies, and evaluating the effects of MC6H6 functionalization on the electronic and magnetic properties of BN graphene. We find that all of the studied MC6H6 groups can be stably adsorbed on BN graphene, with binding energies ranging from 0.97 eV (for FeC6H6) to 1.40 eV (for MnC6H6), which are weakly dependent on the concentration of adsorbates. Moreover, the adsorption of MC6H6 groups can induce certain impurity states within the band gap of the pristine BN graphene, leading to a reduction of the band gap. Most MC6H6/BN graphenes exhibit nonzero magnetic moments, contributed largely by the transition metal atoms. Interestingly, the adsorption of an O-2 molecule on BN graphene is greatly enhanced due to MC6H6 functionalization. The elongation of the O-O bonds of the adsorbed O-2 molecules indicates that MC6H6/BN graphenes could be used to fabricate oxidative catalysts.

Abstract:We report an investigation on the adsorption of small gas molecules (O-2, CO, NO2 and NH3) on pristine and various transition metal embedded graphene samples using a first-principles approach based on density-functional theory (DFT). The most stable adsorption geometry, energy, charge transfer, and magnetic moment of these molecules on graphene embedded with different transition metal elements are thoroughly discussed. Our calculations found that embedded transition metal elements in general can significantly enhance the interactions between gas molecules and graphene, and for applications of graphene-based catalysis, Ti and Au may be the best choices among all transition metal elements. We also expect a detailed analysis of the electronic structures and magnetic properties of these systems to shed light on future applications of graphene-based gas sensing and spintronics.

Abstract:Based on micro-nano sensing technology, the structural and electronic characteristics of metal-doped boron nitride monolayer are investigated by first principles. The existing nano sensors have practical problems, such as no selectivity, too strong adsorption capacity to be recycled, too weak adsorption capacity to obtain sufficient response. We explore the use of a highly sensitive recyclable nano sensor that is best suited for sensing function. Gas adsorption properties for the toxic decomposition gases of C4F7 N are further developed. We select the N-vacancy with the highest binding energies, which are −6.34 eV when doped by Co atom. The strong interaction and suitable adsorption energy between the activated atoms of adsorbent and gases prove their unique adsorption properties. Since no new chemical bonds are formed, it is obvious that systems are in the form of physical adsorption, which proves their ideal desorption properties. In addition, the conductivity increases to different degrees due to the redistribution of electrons, which proves excellent selectivity. Hence, we propose the use of Co-BNN nanomaterial for the detection of C4F7N toxic decomposition gases. Results would serve as instructive reference for the investigation of resistive gas-sensitive sensors.

Abstract:Defect is no longer deemed an adverse aspect of graphene. Contrarily, it can pave ways of extending applicability of graphene. Here, we discuss the effects of three types of defects on graphene: carbon deficiency, adatom (single Fe) dopant and introduction of functional groups (carboxyl, pyran group) on NO2 gas adsorption via density functional theory method. We have observed that the unsaturated carbon in defected graphene is highly active to attract NO2 molecules. Our study suggests that introducing Fe on graphene can enhance the NO2 adsorption process. Adsorption energy calculations suggest the enhancement in NO2 adsorption is more profound for Fe-doped mono and tetra vacant graphene than Fe doped bi- and tri-vacant graphene. This study could potentially be useful in developing adsorption-based applications of graphene.

Abstract:Based on the toxic gases and their conversion to non-toxic gases on the high potentials doping derivatives of boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs), adsorption abilities of (5,5) and (10,0) BNNTs doped by selected dopants (Al, Ga, Cr and Fe) on small gas molecules was explored. Adsorption of small gas molecules, H 2 O, H 2 S, SO 2 , CO 2 , CO, NH 3 , N 2 O, and NO onto the pristine (5,5) and (10,0) BNNTs, their doping derivatives (Al-, Ga-, Cr- and Fe-doped (5,5) and (10,0) BNNTs) were investigated using periodic DFT method. Strong adsorptions of N 2 O (-4.26 eV) and SO 2 (-2.56 eV) on the Cr-(5,5) and Cr-(10,0) BNNTs were found. Furthermore, the Cr-(5,5) and Cr-(10,0) BNNTs as the catalysts for N 2 O conversion to N 2 and O 2 were found. The Al- and Ga-(5,5) BNNTs, Al- and Ga-(10,0) BNNTs are suggested as the NO sensing materials and NH 3 storage materials. All the suggested materials such Cr-(5,5), Cr-(10,0), Al-(5,5), Ga-(5,5), Al-(10,0) and Ga-(10,0) BNNTs could be experimentally tested for conversion, sensitivity, and storage of mentioned toxic gases in the future.

Abstract:Spin-polarized density functional theory (DFT) calculations were employed to investigate the feasibility of appropriate non-noble metal doped boron nitride (M@BN, M = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn) as detectors for harmful gases (H2S, SO2, NO2, O3, N2O, SO3, NH3, CO, and NO). All M@BN monolayers keep significant thermodynamic stability through first-principles molecular dynamics simulations at 300 K. It is found that Cu@BN has appropriate adsorption strength for H2S, SO2, as well as Zn@BN for CO, O3, and the conductivity of Cu@BN and Zn@BN can respond to the above gases. At 298 K, the recovery times of Cu@BN adsorbed with H2S and SO2, and Zn@BN adsorbed with CO are short. When the temperature rises to 348 K, the recovery time of Zn@BN adsorbed with O3 would sharply reduce to an acceptable level. These results indicate that Cu@BN and Zn@BN have potential application in the field of gas detection and adsorption. Our study are expected to provide theoretical support to design low-cost gas capture devices based on non-noble metal decorated BN nanosheets.

Abstract:The novel two-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) decorated nickel oxide (NiO) heterojunction was successfully synthesized by a facile solvothermal precipitation method combining with heat treatment. SEM and TEM analysis were used to corroborate the average size (~8 nm) and overall distribution of superfine NiO nanoparticles on h-BN. XRD, FT-IR and XPS characterization confirmed the configuration of highly crystallinity and p-n heterojunction as well as the presence of surface oxygen vacancy defects. Gas sensing test results revealed that the decoration of h-BN could significantly enhanced triethylamine (TEA) sensing property of NiO. The main contribution of such remarkable results lies in NiO nanoparticles that are close to Debye length scale were embedded on vacancy defects of functionalized h-BN nanosheets, which can optimize sensitivity and selectivity by taming two-dimensional (2D) interfacial electronic effects that strongly affect nonmetal-support interaction between grain boundaries. Meanwhile, the formation of p-n Schottky nanoscale heterojunction between NiO and h-BN can significantly enlarge resistance variation and efficiently promoted the adsorbed triethylamine molecules to oxidize into NO2, H2O, and CO2. Our work highlights the important role of coupling functionalized h-BN in gas sensors, which can also provide a valuable avenue in boosting the sensing performance.

It was found that, rather than the unfavorable adsorption on normal carbon nanotube (CNT), the adsorption of O-2 on NCNT was obviously exothermic and the electron transition of O-2 happened in the adsorption process. The oxygen adsorbed on NCNT showed an interesting electron configuration which was similar to the active oxygen anion. The spin density, charge, and bond length of O-2 changed with the size of NCNT. In combination with the recent results reported by Dai et al. (Science, 2009, 323, 760), it is reasonable to believe that these NCNTs should be a potential metal-free catalyst. The results presented here should be useful for designing and developing effective catalyst based on NCNT.
Adsorption and Surface Reactivity on Single-Walled Boron Nitride Nanotubes Containing Stone-Wales Defects

Abstract:Adsorption of chemical species H, O, CO, H-2, O-2, H2O, and NH3 on the sidewall of zigzag (8,0) and armchair (5, 5) boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) is studied using density-functional theory. Particular attention is paid to searching for the most-stable configuration of the adsorbates at a perfect site (PS) and near a Stone-Wales (SW) defect, and the surface reactivity at the PS and near the SW defect. Reactivity near the SW defect is generally higher than that at the PS because of the formation of frustrated B-B and N-N bonds and the local strain caused by pentagonal and heptagonal pairs. O-2 is prone to dissociative chemisorption near SW defects, but is more likely physisorbed at the PS. The adsorption of H2O and NH3 on the sidewall of BNNT can be described as molecular chemisorption due to modest interaction between HOMO of H2O or NH3 with LUMO of BNNT. Adsorption of NH3 can affect electronic properties of BNNT through lifting the Fermi level. As such, NH3 can be viewed as an n-type impurity. CO and H, can only be physisorbed on the sidewall of BNNT through van der Waals interactions.
The Adsorption Behavior of Gas Molecules on Mn/N- and Mn-Doped Graphene

Abstract:By using density functional theory (DFT), the adsorption behavior of gas molecules on defective graphene doped with manganese and nitrogen were investigated. The geometric structure, electronic structure, and magnetic properties of two substrates were calculated and the sensing mechanism was also analyzed. The results indicate that the MnSV-GP and MnN3-GP have stronger structural stability, in which Mn atoms and their coordination atoms will become the adsorption point for five gas molecules (CH2O, CO, N2O, SO2, and NH3), respectively. Moreover, at room temperature (298 K), the recovery time of the MnSV-GP sensor for N2O gas molecules is approximately 1.1 s. Therefore, it can be concluded that the MnSV-GP matrix as a magnetic gas sensor has a promising potential for detecting N2O. These results also provide a new pathway for the potential application of Mn-doped graphene in the field of gas sensors.

Abstract:Based on the first-principles of density-functional theory (DFT), the effects of NO2, NO, and NH3 adsorption on the change in geometric stability, adsorption properties, and electronic structures of B- or N-doped graphene are investigated. For NO/NO2-B/N-doped graphene systems, NO/NO2 have more stability on B-doped graphenes than them on N-doped graphenes. The introduction of B atom can make the adsorption of NO/NO2 on graphene much easier. The stable configuration of B-doped graphene is more likely to be gas sensor for detecting toxic gases such as NO2 and NO. This makes it possible to use B-doped graphene as sensing materials for designing novel gas sensors. The interaction between NH3 and B/N-doped graphene is rather weak. Abstract:The adsorption of CO, CO2, CH4, H2, N2 and N2O on armchair (5,5) boron nitride nanotube (BNNT) with and without the doping of transition metals (TM), i.e. Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu or Zn, was investigated using the density functional theory calculation. The results indicate all the considered gases are physically adsorbed by weak interaction on the pure BNNT, revealing that pure BNNT has poor sensing performance for these gases. TM are then doped in the B or N vacancy of BNNT to improve the sensitivity and selectivity. As a result, it was found that the gas adsorption performance of BNNT is obviously enhanced due to the introduction of TM dopant atom. In particularly, according to the results of adsorption energy, Cu doped BNNT (Cu-BNNT) system shows a high selectivity toward CO molecule compared with other metal doped systems. This is further confirmed by the density of state, energy gap and charge transfer analyses. Furthermore, based on the sensor performance analysis, it was found that Cu-BNNT also has favorable desorption characteristics for CO. Therefore, this study concluded that Cu-BNNT can be used as a superior sensor material with high sensitivity, selectivity and favorable recycle time for CO gas.

Abstract:The optimization of the gas diffusion path and surface coordination environment through morphology control can improve the intrinsic activity of the catalyst in NO oxidation reactions. Microporous nanosheets, nanowires, and spheres of carbon were constructed using resorcinol and formaldehyde as carbon sources, melamine as nitrogen source, and graphene oxide or carbon nanowires as structure‐directing agents to reveal the effects of morphology and nitrogen‐doping on NO oxidation activity at room temperature. With the increase of coating thickness, the ultramicroporous structure becomes pronounced and the nitrogen content increases, which contribute to the improvement of steady‐state NO conversion. The 2D microporous nanosheets (TDC‐200) with sheet structure shows prominent diffusion and adsorption capability than 1D nanowires and sphere, which shortens the gas diffusion path and enhances the efficient utilization of ultramicropores, thereby presenting the highest NO oxidation activity of 78.4% at room temperature. The results of DFT calculations further demonstrate that doping of nitrogen atoms could significantly reduce the (2NO + O2)ads energy barrier and accelerate the reaction. This study provides a deeper understanding of the NO oxidation on non‐metallic catalyst.
