Abstract:The implementation of digital transformation programs requires careful allocation of software developers to a variety of digital products and services with different levels of modularity. This paper investigates how deadline orientation (an individual‐level preference of developers for completing work close to deadlines) and architectural modularity (a characteristic of products) influence central outcomes in software development. We argue that architectural modularity positively interacts with deadline orientation to influence software quality and the job satisfaction of developers. Our empirical analyses, using rare and high‐quality data from 131 software developers and 29 product owners working at a captive software development center in India of a leading global software firm, confirm our hypotheses. We contribute to the literature on software development by showing that the fit between the technological characteristics of the software product (i.e., architectural modularity) and people factors (i.e., the temporal work style preferences of developers) plays an important role in shaping both software quality and job satisfaction. Our study has wider implications for the literature on software development, temporal work styles, and architectural modularity. It is instructive for practitioners tasked with hiring or allocating software developers for software products with varying technological characteristics in their digital transformation efforts.

Abstract:In this paper, we present the findings from a survey study to investigate how developers and managers define and trade-off developer productivity and software quality (two related lenses into software development). We found that developers and managers, as cohorts, are not well aligned in their views of what it means to be productive (developers think of productivity in terms of activity, while more managers think of productivity in terms of performance). We also found that developers are not accurate at predicting their managers' views of productivity. In terms of quality, we found that individual developers and managers have quite varied views of what quality means to them, but as cohorts they are closely aligned in their different views, with the majority in both groups defining quality in terms of robustness. Over half of the developers and managers reported that quality can be traded for higher productivity and why this trade-off can be justified, while one third consider quality as a necessary part of productivity that cannot be traded. We also present a new descriptive framework for quality, TRUCE, that we synthesize from the survey responses. We call for more discussion between developers and managers about what they each consider as important software quality attributes, and to have open debate about how software quality relates to developer productivity and what trade-offs should or should not be made.

Abstract:Despite all efforts, many product development projects fail and lead to the introduction of products that do not meet customers' expectations. A high level of customer satisfaction cannot be obtained. On the other hand, in many product development projects the process of product development is conducted very unsystematically and resources are wasted because of a lack of communication between the different functions involved in product development. Time especially is a critical factor within product development as time to market is becoming increasingly more important.Managers need a set of practical step-by-step tools and methods which ensure a better understanding of customers' needs and requirements, as well as procedures and processes to enhance communication by focusing on the voice of the customer within a product development project.The authors propose a methodology, based on Kano's model of customer satisfaction, to explore customers' stated needs and unstated desires and to resolve them into different categories which have different impacts on customer satisfaction. It is shown how this categorization can be used as a basis for product development, especially for quality function deployment. The paper begins with a brief discussion of the strategic importance of customer satisfaction, then Kano's model and its combination with quality function deployment is demonstrated, using a case study from the ski industry. The paper closes with a brief discussion of the managerial implications and the consequences of the application of these tools.

Abstract:Occasional deadline misses are acceptable for soft real-time systems. Quantifying probabilistic and deterministic characteristics of deadline misses is therefore essential to ensure that deadline misses indeed happen only occasionally. This is supported by recent research activities on probabilistic worst-case execution time, worst-case deadline failure probability, the maximum number of deadline misses, upper bounds on the deadline miss probability, and the deadline miss rate. This paper focuses on the deadline miss rate of a periodic soft real-time task in the long run. Our model assumes that this soft real-time task has an arbitrary relative deadline and that a job can still be executed after a deadline-miss until a dismiss point. This model generalizes the existing models that either dismiss a job immediately after its deadline miss or never dismiss a job. We provide mathematical notation on the convergence of the deadline miss rate in the long run and essential properties to calculate the deadline miss rate. Specifically, we use a Markov chain to model the execution behavior of a periodic soft real-time task. We present the required ergodicity property to ensure that the deadline miss rate in the long run is described by a stationary distribution.

Abstract:It is well known that the software process impacts the quality of the resulting product. There are also anecdotal claims that agile processes result in higher level of quality than traditional methodologies. However, still solid evidence of this is missing. This work reports in an empirical analysis of the correlation between software process and software quality with specific reference to agile and traditional processes. More than 100 software developers and engineers from 21 countries have been surveyed with an online questionnaire. We have used the percentage of satisfied customers estimated by the software developers and engineers as the main dependent variable. The results evidence some interesting patterns: architectural styles may not have a significant influence on quality, agile methodologies might result in happier customers, larger companies and shorter projects seems to produce better products.

Abstract:It is very necessary for successful product development to have good cross-functional team management in today's business climate, which is more dynamic and competitive than ever before. It is crucial to have cross-functional teams in order to stimulate innovation, improve product quality, and accelerate time-to-market. These teams comprise of people from a variety of departments, including engineering, marketing, design, and operations, among others. In the context of product development, this abstract investigates the relevance of managing cross-functional teams, as well as the issues that come with it and the best practices that may be implemented. Having a wide range of viewpoints, greater problem-solving skills, and enhanced cooperation across a variety of functional areas are just some of the advantages that cross-functional teams provide. A holistic approach to product development that is capable of addressing difficult and varied issues is made possible by these teams, which are meant to incorporate knowledge from a variety of disciplines from different fields. Cross-functional teams are able to produce more creative solutions, better fulfil the demands of customers, and adapt to changing market circumstances because they bring together people who have various abilities and points of view when they are brought together. Nevertheless, managing teams that work across functional boundaries brings a number of issues. One of the most significant challenges is bringing together individuals of the team who have various work styles, goals, and objectives. It is essential to have efficient communication and coordination in order to guarantee that all members of the team are at the same level of understanding and are working towards the same objective. In addition, divergent degrees of knowledge and competing interests may result in misunderstandings and conflicts, which can impede development and have an impact on the morale of the team.

Abstract:Recent research in software engineering supports the "happy-productive" thesis, and the desire of flourishing happiness among programmers is often expressed by industry practitioners. Recent literature has suggested that a cost-effective way to foster happiness and productivity among workers could be to limit unhappiness of developers due to its negative impact. However, possible negative effects of unhappiness are still largely unknown in the software development context. In this paper, we present the first results from a study exploring the consequences of the unhappy developers. Using qualitative data analysis of the survey responses given by 181 participants, we identified 49 potential consequences of unhappiness while developing software. These results have several implications. While raising the awareness of the role of moods, emotions and feelings in software development, we foresee that our classification scheme will spawn new happiness studies linking causes and effects, and it can act as a guideline for developers and managers to foster happiness at work.

Abstract:Using data from a web-based survey of software developers, the author attempts to determine root causes of "death march" projects and excessive work hours in the software industry in relation to company practices and management. Special emphasis is placed on the factor of business/technical supervisor background. An analysis of variance revealed significant differences between these supervisor groups with regard to a "Pointy-Haired Boss" (PHB) sentiment index. This difference, combined with correlations between the PHB index and the endpoints of project failure and use of software engineering practices, indicate some disparity in the suitability of businessbackground supervisors to manage software development projects compared with their technical-background counterparts. Other survey data points to improved project management skills as the biggest necessity for supervisors in the business-background group.

Abstract:The growing literature on affect among software developers mostly reports on the linkage between happiness, software quality, and developer productivity. Understanding happiness and unhappiness in all its components – positive and negative emotions and moods – is an attractive and important endeavor. Scholars in industrial and organizational psychology have suggested that understanding happiness and unhappiness could lead to cost-effective ways of enhancing working conditions, job performance, and to limiting the occurrence of psychological disorders. Our comprehension of the consequences of (un)happiness among developers is still too shallow, being mainly expressed in terms of development productivity and software quality. In this paper, we study what happens when developers are happy and unhappy while developing software. Qualitative data analysis of responses given by 317 questionnaire participants identified 42 consequences of unhappiness and 32 of happiness. We found consequences of happiness and unhappiness that are beneficial and detrimental for developers’ mental well-being, the software development process, and the produced artifacts. Our classification scheme, available as open data enables new happiness research opportunities of cause-effect type, and it can act as a guideline for practitioners for identifying damaging effects of unhappiness and for fostering happiness on the job.

Abstract:Deadlines fundamentally shape the motivation for effort. Research examining effort-based choices finds high effort is an avoided cost. However, this work overlooks the fact that effort can be valuable when it makes progress on long-term goals before deadlines. We test a new framework where motivation depends on deadline pressure (work remaining / time remaining). Across three studies we use computational modelling on novel tasks examining effort-based decisions when effort makes progress on goals with deadlines. In support of hypotheses, deadline pressure significantly impacts decision-making, shifting people from avoiding effort, to seeking and valuing it. Using ultra-high-field fMRI, we show that functionally connected putamen and midcingulate cortex (MCC) sub-regions process and update estimates of deadline pressure, with distinct anterior cingulate and putamen sub-regions processing the costs or added value of effort. We show the neurocomputational mechanisms for how deadline pressure shapes motivation, and that keep us ‘on track’ for our goals.

Abstract:A novel modeling framework is proposed for dynamic scheduling of projects and workforce assignment in open source software development (OSSD). The goal is to help project managers in OSSD distribute workforce to multiple projects to achieve high efficiency in software development (e.g. high workforce utilization and short development time) while ensuring the quality of deliverables (e.g. code modularity and software security). The proposed framework consists of two models: 1) a system dynamic model coupled with a meta-heuristic to obtain an optimal schedule of software development projects considering their attributes (e.g. priority, effort, duration) and 2) an agent based model to represent the development community as a social network, where development managers form an optimal team for each project and balance the workload among multiple scheduled projects based on the optimal schedule obtained from the system dynamic model. To illustrate the proposed framework, a software enhancement request process in Kuali foundation is used as a case study. Survey data collected from the Kuali development managers, project managers and actual historical enhancement requests have been used to construct the proposed models. Extensive experiments are conducted to demonstrate the impact of varying parameters on the considered efficiency and quality.
In Search of Socio-Technical Congruence: A Large-Scale Longitudinal Study

Abstract:We report on a large-scale empirical study investigating the relevance of socio-technical congruence over key basic software quality metrics, namely, bugs and churn. In particular, we explore whether alignment or misalignment of social communication structures and technical dependencies in large software projects influences software quality. To this end, we have defined a quantitative and operational notion of socio-technical congruence, which we call socio-technical motif congruence (STMC). STMC is a measure of the degree to which developers working on the same file or on two related files, need to communicate. As socio-technical congruence is a complex and multi-faceted phenomenon, the interpretability of the results is one of our main concerns, so we have employed a careful mixed-methods statistical analysis. In particular, we provide analyses with similar techniques as employed by seminal work in the field to ensure comparability of our results with the existing body of work. The major result of our study, based on an analysis of 25 large open-source projects, is that STMC is not related to project quality measures -- software bugs and churn -- in any temporal scenario. That is, we find no statistical relationship between the alignment of developer tasks and developer communications on the one hand, and project outcomes on the other hand. We conclude that, wherefore congruence does matter as literature shows, then its measurable effect lies elsewhere.

Time Pressure in Software Engineering: A Systematic Review

Abstract:Large project overruns and overtime work have been reported in the software industry, resulting in additional expense for companies and personal issues for developers. The present work aims to provide an overview of studies related to time pressure in software engineering; specifically, existing definitions, possible causes, and metrics relevant to time pressure were collected, and a mapping of the studies to software processes and approaches was performed. Moreover, we synthesize results of existing quantitative studies on the effects of time pressure on software development, and offer practical takeaways for practitioners and researchers, based on empirical evidence. Our search strategy examined 5,414 sources, found through repository searches and snowballing. Applying inclusion and exclusion criteria resulted in the selection of 102 papers, which made relevant contributions related to time pressure in software engineering. The majority of high quality studies report increased productivity and decreased quality under time pressure. Frequent categories of studies focus on quality assurance, cost estimation, and process simulation. It appears that time pressure is usually caused by errors in cost estimation. The effect of time pressure is most often identified during software quality assurance. The majority of empirical studies report increased productivity under time pressure, while the most cost estimation and process simulation models assume that compressing the schedule increases the total needed hours. We also find evidence of the mediating effect of knowledge on the effects of time pressure, and that tight deadlines impact tasks with an algorithmic nature more severely. Future research should better contextualize quantitative studies to account for the existing conflicting results and to provide an understanding of situations when time pressure is either beneficial or harmful.

Abstract:Abstract This paper considers the orientation of product development structures towards interdisciplinary system architectures using the example of a tool machine manufacturer. Due to the change from simple mechanical products to extensively designed systems, whose successful development requires the integration of all disciplines involved, it is analyzed which requirements there are for these interdisciplinary system architectures in today's development environment. In addition, it is validated on the basis of the investigation environment that interdisciplinary system structures are necessary for the development on the different levels of the system view. In doing so, the investigation environment addresses the concept of extracting customer-relevant features (systems) from a physical-tailored modular system (supersystem) in order to develop and test them autonomously, as well as to transfer them to the entire product range in a standardized manner. The elaboration identifies basic requirements for the development of a knowledge base in interdisciplinary system structures and places them into the context of an agile modular kit development.
A Systematic Mapping Study on Dynamic Metrics and Software Quality

Abstract:Several important aspects of software product quality can be evaluated using dynamic metrics that effectively capture and reflect the software's true runtime behavior. While the extent of research in this field is still relatively limited, particularly when compared to research on static metrics, the field is growing, given the inherent advantages of dynamic metrics. The aim of this work is to systematically investigate the body of research on dynamic software metrics to identify issues associated with their selection, design and implementation. Mapping studies are being increasingly used in software engineering to characterize an emerging body of research and to identify gaps in the field under investigation. In this study we identified and evaluated 60 works based on a set of defined selection criteria. These studies were further classified and analyzed to identify their relativity to future dynamic metrics research. The classification was based on three different facets: research focus, research type and contribution type. We found a strong body of research related to dynamic coupling and cohesion metrics, with most works also addressing the abstract notion of software complexity. Specific opportunities for future work relate to a much broader range of quality dimensions.

Abstract:Context Quality requirements are important for product success yet often handled poorly. The problems with scope decision lead to delayed handling and an unbalanced scope. Objective This study characterizes the scope decision process to understand influencing factors and properties affecting the scope decision of quality requirements. Method We studied one company's scope decision process over a period of five years. We analyzed the decisions artifacts and interviewed experienced engineers involved in the scope decision process. Results Features addressing quality aspects explicitly are a minor part (4.41%) of all features handled. The phase of the product line seems to influence the prevalence and acceptance rate of quality features. Lastly, relying on external stakeholders and upfront analysis seems to lead to long lead-times and an insufficient quality requirements scope. Conclusions There is a need to make quality mode explicit in the scope decision process. We propose a scope decision process at a strategic level and a tactical level. The former to address long-term planning and the latter to cater for a speedy process. Furthermore, we believe it is key to balance the stakeholder input with feedback from usage and market in a more direct way than through a long plan-driven process.

Exposing Software Engineering Students to Stressful Projects: Does Diversity Matter?

Abstract:Software development teams have to face stress caused by deadlines, staff turnover, or individual differences in commitment, expertise, and time zones. While students are typically taught the theory of software project management, their exposure to such stress factors is usually limited. However, preparing students for the stress they will have to endure once they work in project teams is important for their own sake, as well as for the sake of team performance in the face of stress. Team performance has been linked to the diversity of software development teams, but little is known about how diversity influences the stress experienced in teams. In order to shed light on this aspect, we provided students with the opportunity to self-experience the basics of project management in self-organizing teams, and studied the impact of six diversity dimensions on team performance, coping with stressors, and positive perceived learning effects. Three controlled experiments at two universities with a total of 65 participants suggest that the social background impacts the perceived stressors the most, while age and work experience have the highest impact on perceived learnings. Most diversity dimensions have a medium correlation with the quality of work, yet no significant relation to the team performance. This lays the foundation to improve students' training for software engineering teamwork based on their diversity-related needs and to create diversity-sensitive awareness among educators, employers and researchers.

Abstract:Abstract Proponents of open source style software development claim that better software is produced using this model compared with the traditional closed model. However, there is little empirical evidence in support of these claims. In this paper, we present the results of a pilot case study aiming: (a) to understand the implications of structural quality; and (b) to figure out the benefits of structural quality analysis of the code delivered by open source style development. To this end, we have measured quality characteristics of 100 applications written for Linux, using a software measurement tool, and compared the results with the industrial standard that is proposed by the tool. Another target of this case study was to investigate the issue of modularity in open source as this characteristic is being considered crucial by the proponents of open source for this type of software development. We have empirically assessed the relationship between the size of the application components and the delivered quality measured through user satisfaction. We have determined that, up to a certain extent, the average component size of an application is negatively related to the user satisfaction for this application.

Do Programmers Work at Night or During the Weekend?

Abstract:Abnormal working hours can reduce work health, general well-being, and productivity, independent from a profession. To inform future approaches for automatic stress and overload detection, this paper establishes empirically collected measures of the work patterns of software engineers. To this aim, we perform the first large-scale study of software engineers' working hours by investigating the time stamps of commit activities of 86 large open source software projects, both containing hired and volunteer developers. We find that two thirds of software engineers mainly follow typical office hours, empirically established to be from 10h to 18h, and do not usually work during nights and weekends. Large variations between projects and individuals exist. Surprisingly, we found no support that project maturation would decrease abnormal working hours. In the Firefox case study, we found that hired developers work more during office hours while seniority, either in terms of number of commits or job status, did not impact working hours. We conclude that the use of working hours or timestamps of work products for stress detection requires establishing baselines at the level of individuals.
