Abstract:Monitoring changes in biodiversity resulting from urban sprawl is an important topic for conservation. Automated biodiversity monitoring methods can quickly collect and process large datasets at minimal cost facilitating effective biodiversity monitoring. Despite being promising, the efficacy of acoustic monitoring in urban areas has not been established. Herein, our aim was to assess the effectiveness of acoustic indices in monitoring urban biodiversity. Thus, we acoustically sampled birds from a large neotropical city (Brasília, Brazil) across a gradient of urbanization. Human identification of recorded species revealed a clear reduction in bird richness in areas of greater urbanization. However, none of the six automated acoustic indices we tested [Normalized Difference Soundscape Index (NDSI), Acoustic entropy (H), Bioacoustic Index (BI), Acoustic Evenness (AEI), Acoustic Diversity Index (ADI), and Acoustic Complexity Index (ACI)], correlate with the degree of urbanization, indicating that these indices may not be a suitable tool for monitoring biodiversity in urban environments. In urban areas, it seems more appropriate to use traditional metrics, that make it possible to accurately identify the heard species. We recommend the need to ground truth the indices and explore alternative acoustic signal's ability to monitor biodiversity in the complex soundscape of urban environments.

Abstract:The increasing conversion of natural areas for anthropic land use has been a major cause of habitat loss, destabilizing ecosystems and leading to a biodiversity crisis. Passive acoustic sensors open the possibility of remotely sensing fauna on large spatial and temporal scales, improving our understanding of the current state of biodiversity and the effects of human influences. Acoustic indices have been widely used and tested in recent years, with an aim towards understanding the relationship between indices and the acoustic activity of several taxa in different types of environments. However, studies have shown divergent relationships between acoustic indices and the vocal activity of most soniferous taxa. A combination of indices has, in turn, been reported as a promising tool for representing biodiversity in different contexts. We used uni- and bivariate models to test different combinations of 8 common indices in relation to bird assemblage metrics. We recorded twenty-two study sites in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest and three different types of environments in each site (forest, pasture, and swamp). Our results showed that 1) the best acoustic indices for explaining bird richness, abundance, and diversity were Bioacoustic and Acoustic Complexity; 2) the type of environment (forest, pasture, and swamp) influenced the performance of acoustic indices in explaining bird biodiversity, with the highest score model (biggest R 2 value) being a combination between Acoustic Diversity and Bioacoustic indices. Our results do support the use of acoustic indices in monitoring the acoustic activity of birds, but combining indices is encouraged since it provided the best results. However, given the divergence we found across environments, we recommend that sets of indices are tested to determine which of them best describe the biodiversity pattern models for a specific habitat. Based on our results, we propose that biodiversity patterns can be predicted through acoustic patterns. However, the level of confidence will depend on the acoustic index used and on focal taxa of interest (i.e., birds, amphibians, insects, and mammals).

Abstract:The increasing biodiversity loss worldwide has resulted in a growing need for cost-effective, efficient tools to monitor biodiversity over large spatial and temporal scales. The idea of using acoustic indices to monitor soniferous animal communities is becoming increasingly popular. Dozens of indices have been proposed over the last 15 years to measure acoustic complexity as a proxy of biodiversity. However, we still lack sufficient evaluation of the acoustic indices' power to predict biodiversity, and the factors modulating their efficacy. Here, we extend a recent meta-analysis on the acoustic indices conducted by Alcocer et al. (2022; Biological Reviews) by increasing the dataset of studies 1.5 times and adding an important modulating variable: latitude. Latitude is strongly connected to species diversity, and it has previously been postulated that acoustic indices may be unable to fully reflect the high species diversity of the tropics, due to limitations related to phylogenetic inertia (i.e., closely related species sounding similar) and interference between species, with masking by insects being particularly common. Using a total of 524 effect sizes from 49 studies, we found a moderate positive correlation between acoustic indices and biodiversity (r = 0.32, 95 % CI [0.20, 0.43]), similar to the finding of Alcocer et al. (2022). Of five moderator variables, latitude was the second most important after the type of acoustic index, with higher latitude studies showing acoustic indices to have greater predictive power. When testing the indices separately with latitude as the only moderator, four of the seven acoustic indices (ACI, AR, BIO, NDSI) were found to be significantly influenced by latitude. Future work should investigate the mechanisms by which latitude influences the acoustic indices' efficacy. For now, we can conclude that whatever mechanisms are driving acoustic indices to underestimate diversity in tropical forests, the influence is evident even when measuring acoustic complexity in different ways using different indices.

Abstract:We assessed eight acoustic indices as proxies for bird species richness in the National Science Complex (NSC), University of the Philippines Diliman. The acoustic indices were the normalized Acoustic Complexity Index (nACI), Acoustic Diversity Index (ADI), inverse Acoustic Evenness Index (1-AEI), Bioacoustic Index (BI), Acoustic Entropy Index (H), Temporal Entropy Index (Ht), Spectral Entropy Index (Hf), and Acoustic Richness Index (AR). Low-cost, automated sound recorders using a Raspberry Pi were placed in three sites at the NSC to continuously collect 5-min sound samples from July 2020 to January 2022. We selected 840 5-min sound samples, equivalent to 70 hours, through stratified sampling and pre-processed them before conducting acoustic index analysis on the raw and pre-processed data. We measured Spearman's correlation between each acoustic index and bird species richness obtained from manual spectrogram scanning and listening to recordings. We compared the correlation coefficients between the raw and pre-processed.wav files to assess the robustness of the indices using Fisher's z-transformation. Additionally, we used GLMMs to determine how acoustic indices predict bird species richness based on season and time of day. The Spearman's rank correlation and GLMM analysis showed significant, weak negative correlations between the nACI, 1-AEI, Ht, and AR with bird species richness. The weak correlations suggest that the performance of acoustic indices are dependent on various factors, such as the local noise conditions, bird species composition, season, and time of day. Thus, ground-truthing of the acoustic indices should be done before applying them in studies. Among the eight indices, the nACI was the best-performing index, performing consistently across sites and independently of season and time of day. We highlight the importance of pre-processing sound data from urban settings and other noisy environments before acoustic index analysis, as this strengthens the correlation between index values and bird species richness.

Abstract:Passive acoustic monitoring is usually presented as a complementary approach to monitoring wildlife communities and assessing ecosystem conditions. Automatic species detection methods support biodiversity monitoring and analysis by providing information on the presence–absence of species, which allows understanding the ecosystem structure. Therefore, different alternatives have been proposed to identify species. However, the algorithms are parameterized to identify specific species. Analysing multiple species would help to monitor and quantify biodiversity, as it includes the different taxonomic groups present in the soundscape. We present an unsupervised methodology for multi‐species call recognition from ecological soundscapes. The proposal is based on a clustering algorithm, specifically the learning algorithm for multivariate data analysis (LAMDA) 3pi algorithm, which automatically suggests the number of clusters associated with the sonotypes. Emphasis was made on improving the segmentation of the audio to analyse the whole soundscape without parameterizing the algorithm according to each taxonomic group. To estimate the performance of our proposal, we used four datasets from different locations, years and habitats. These datasets contain sounds from the four major taxonomic groups that dominate terrestrial soundscapes (birds, amphibians, mammals and insects) in audible and ultrasonic spectra. The methodology presents performances between 75% and 96% in presence–absence species recognition. Using the clusters proposed by our methodology, the whole soundscape biodiversity was measured and compared with the estimate of four acoustic indices (ACI, NP, SO and BI). Our approach performs biodiversity assessments similar to acoustic indices with the advantage of providing information about acoustic communities without the need for prior knowledge of the species present in the audio recordings.

Abstract:Due to the complexity of soundscapes, Ecological Acoustic Indices (EAI) are frequently used as metrics to summarize ecologically meaningful information from audio recordings. Recent technological advances have allowed the rapid development of many audio recording devices with significant hardware/firmware variations among brands, whose effects in calculating EAI have not yet been determined. In this work, we show how recordings of the same landscape with different devices effectively hinder reproducibility and produce contradictory results. To address these issues, we propose a preprocessing pipeline to reduce EAI variability resulting from different hardware without altering the target information in the audio. To this end, we tested eight EAI commonly used in soundscape analyses. We targeted three common cases of variability caused by recorder characteristics: sampling frequency, microphone gain variation, and frequency response. We quantified the difference in the probability density functions of each index among recorders according to the Kullback-Leibler divergence. As a result, our approach reduced up to 75% variations among recorders from different brands (AudioMoth and SongMeter) and identified the conditions in which these devices are comparable. In conclusion, we demonstrated that different devices effectively affect EAI and show how these variations can be mitigated.

Abstract:Ecoacoustics, the study of environmental sound, is a rapidly growing discipline offering ecological insights at scales ranging from individual organisms to whole ecosystems. Substantial methodological developments over the last 15 years have streamlined extraction of ecological information from audio recordings. One widely used set of methods are acoustic indices, which offer numerical summaries of the spectral, temporal and amplitude patterns in audio recordings. Currently, the specifics of each index's background, methodology and the soundscape patterns they are designed to summarise, are spread across multiple sources. Critically, details of index calculation are sometimes scarce, making it challenging for users to understand how index values are generated. Discrepancies in understanding can lead to misuse of acoustic indices or reporting of spurious results. This hinders ecological inference, replicability and discourages adoption of these tools for conservation and ecosystem monitoring, where they might otherwise provide useful insight. Here we present the Acoustic Index User's Guide—an interactive RShiny web app that defines and deconstructs eight of the most commonly used acoustic indices to facilitate consistent application across the discipline. We break the acoustic indices calculations down into easy‐to‐follow steps to better enable practical application and critical interpretation of acoustic indices. We demonstrate typical soundscape patterns using a suite of 91 example audio recordings: 66 real‐world soundscapes from terrestrial, aquatic and subterranean systems around the world, and 25 synthetic files demonstrating archetypal soundscape patterns. Our interpretation figures signpost specific soundscape patterns likely to be reflected in acoustic indices' values. This RShiny app is a living resource; additional acoustic indices will be added in the future through collaboration with authors of pre‐existing and new indices. The app also serves as a best‐practice template for the information required when publishing new acoustic indices, so that authors can facilitate the widest possible understanding and uptake of their indices. In turn, improved understanding of acoustic indices will aid effective hypothesis generation, application and interpretation in ecological research, ecosystem monitoring and conservation management.

Abstract:Agricultural land use shapes biodiversity patterns. In the literature, land use and land cover at both local and landscape scales has been shown to be important to understanding variation in biodiversity in agricultural systems including measures of occupancy, abundance, and diversity, with landscape scale processes moderating local patterns. The relative role of these processes in explaining variation in acoustic indices, an increasingly frequent measure of biological and environmental change, remains unknown. To address this gap, we recorded acoustic data by passive sampling for two months across 39 farms in central Kansas, USA with automated recording units. We used these data to calculate eight different acoustic indices. We found that acoustic indices were associated with local land use composition (within 100 m) but not landscape composition (within 1000 m). These data suggest that passive acoustic monitoring may be used explain how local land use shapes the soundscape and perhaps biodiversity, but future research should seek to understand the lack of response to landscape variation.

Abstract:High rates of biodiversity loss caused by human-induced changes in the environment require new methods for large scale fauna monitoring and data analysis. While ecoacoustic monitoring is increasingly being used and shows promise, analysis and interpretation of the big data produced remains a challenge. Computer-generated acoustic indices potentially provide a biologically meaningful summary of sound, however, temporal autocorrelation, difficulties in statistical analysis of multi-index data and lack of consistency or transferability in different terrestrial environments have hindered the application of those indices in different contexts. To address these issues we investigate the use of time-series motif discovery and random forest classification of multi-indices through two case studies. We use a semi-automated workflow combining time-series motif discovery and random forest classification of multi-index (acoustic complexity, temporal entropy, and events per second) data to categorize sounds in unfiltered recordings according to the main source of sound present (birds, insects, geophony). Our approach showed more than 70% accuracy in label assignment in both datasets. The categories assigned were broad, but we believe this is a great improvement on traditional single index analysis of environmental recordings as we can now give ecological meaning to recordings in a semi-automated way that does not require expert knowledge and manual validation is only necessary for a small subset of the data. Furthermore, temporal autocorrelation, which is largely ignored by researchers, has been effectively eliminated through the time-series motif discovery technique applied here for the first time to ecoacoustic data. We expect that our approach will greatly assist researchers in the future as it will allow large datasets to be rapidly processed and labeled, enabling the screening of recordings for undesired sounds, such as wind, or target biophony (insects and birds) for biodiversity monitoring or bioacoustics research.

Abstract:Passive acoustic monitoring serves as a minimally invasive and effective method for biodiversity assessment, particularly in bird monitoring through the application of acoustic indices. However, the use of different recording devices and different types of environmental noise (e.g., rain, wind, stream, traffic noise) lead to signal distortions that affect the application of ecoacoustics indices. Currently, there are no established guidelines specifying the technical requirements for recording devices and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) threshold for accurate calculation of acoustic indices. To enhance the accuracy of acoustic indices in bird biodiversity assessments, this study investigated the impact of different recording devices and environmental noise (rain, wind, stream, traffic noise) on acoustic indices. In this study, we selected six acoustic indices: Acoustic Complexity Index, Acoustic Diversity Index, Acoustic Evenness Index, Bioacoustic Index, Acoustic Entropy Index, and Normalized Difference Soundscape Index, and we used four different recording devices to simultaneously record 104 h of bird-sound data at the same location. In addition, 44 h of noisy bird signals with different noise types and intensities were artificially synthesized for comparison. The sound data were then used to analyze the effects of the recording devices and environmental noise on the acoustic indices used for bird biodiversity assessment. Our results showed that (a) all six acoustic indices were affected by the recording device used; (b) each acoustic index had different sensitivities to different noise types; and (c) there was a SNR threshold above which the effect of noise on the acoustic index was negligible. This study provides recommendations for recording device selection and determines SNR thresholds for noisy bird signals, contributing to the refinement of protocols for acquiring and preprocessing signals in the application of acoustic indices for bird biodiversity assessment. These findings aim to establish standardized protocols for signal acquisition and preprocessing in future application of acoustic indices.

Island Biogeography of Soundscapes: Island Area Shapes Spatial Patterns of Avian Acoustic Diversity

Abstract:Aim: The equilibrium theory of island biogeography predicts the positive species-area relationship and the negative species-isolation relationship, resulting in higher species richness on large and close islands. Unlike species richness, soundscape diversity integrates sound from various sources (e.g. biophony, geophony and anthrophony). However, how soundscape diversity varies with island area and isolation still needs to be tested. Here, we explored the island biogeography of bird soundscapes and the determinants of island attributes in shaping bird diversity and soundscape diversity. Location: Thousand Island Lake, Zhejiang, China. Taxon: Birds. Methods: We recorded avian soundscapes by audio recorders and censused bird diversity by line transects on 20 land-bridge islands. We calculated four acoustic indices (acoustic complexity index, bioacoustic index, acoustic evenness index and acoustic entropy index) to assess acoustic richness, evenness and heterogeneity to explore the soundscape diversity of birds. We used multiple linear regressions, spatial autoregressions and piecewise structural equation models to examine the relationships between bird richness and acoustic diversity, and island attributes. Results: We found positive diversity-area relationships for avian soundscapes. Larger islands had more vocal species and higher habitat diversity, which led to an increment in the richness and unevenness of avian soundscapes on large islands. Acoustic evenness decreased with increasing isolation (distance to the mainland). Main Conclusions: Soundscapes on large islands are more diverse than those on small islands. Rich acoustic assemblages and heterogeneous habitats promote increased soundscape diversity on islands. Conversely, the lack of vocal contributors, resulting in a decrement in the communication of acoustic signals, can create a lower soundscape diversity on small and remote islands. Our study emphasizes the necessity of examining both species and habitat diversity in island biogeography for better understanding the underlying mechanisms determining biological soundscapes on islands.
Two listeners detect slightly more birds than a single listener when interpreting acoustic recordings

Abstract:Abstract Acoustic recorders are increasingly important for monitoring bird populations and have potential to augment existing monitoring programs such as the North American Breeding Bird Survey (BBS). An advantage of acoustic recordings is that they can be reviewed multiple times by multiple experts, potentially yielding improved estimates of species abundance and community richness. Yet, few studies have examined how frequently successive listeners disagree on acoustic interpretations and how strongly estimates of species richness and abundance are altered when multiple experts review each recording. We assigned multiple expert listeners to interpret recordings at 690 Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) stops, and subsequently assigned second listeners to conduct a review of first listeners’ interpretations. We examined the extent to which listeners agreed with each other and quantified the effect of disagreements on resultant estimates of species occurrence, abundance, and stop-level richness. We also compared estimates from acoustic recordings to those obtained during simultaneous field surveys. Estimates were highly correlated for number of species per stop (r = 0.92) and detection probabilities of species (r = 0.97) based on first and second-listener data. Second listeners disagreed with ~9% of first listeners’ interpretations and added an average of ~15% additional species and 16% additional birds not reported by first listeners. Estimates based on acoustic recordings were also highly correlated with those obtained from field surveys, though listeners were unable to count flocks. A single expert reviewer can provide a reasonable approximation of the relative abundance and species composition of birds available for acoustic detection during Breeding Bird Surveys. However, acoustic review by multiple listeners may still be important for species that are rare, difficult to identify, or of high conservation concern.

Bioacoustics for in situ validation of species distribution modelling: An example with bats in Brazil

Abstract:Species distribution modelling (SDM) gained importance on biodiversity distribution and conservation studies worldwide, including prioritizing areas for public policies and international treaties. Useful for large-scale approaches and species distribution estimates, it is a plus considering that a minor fraction of the planet is adequately sampled. However, minimizing errors is challenging, but essential, considering the uses and consequences of such models. In situ validation of the SDM outputs should be a key-step-in some cases, urgent. Bioacoustics can be used to validate and refine those outputs, especially if the focal species' vocalizations are conspicuous and species-specific. This is the case of echolocating bats. Here, we used extensive acoustic monitoring (>120 validation points over an area of >758,000 km2, and producing >300,000 sound files) to validate MaxEnt outputs for six neotropical bat species in a poorly-sampled region of Brazil. Based on in situ validation, we evaluated four threshold-dependent theoretical evaluation metrics' ability in predicting models' performance. We also assessed the performance of three widely used thresholds to convert continuous SDMs into presence/absence maps. We demonstrated that MaxEnt produces very different outputs, requiring a careful choice on thresholds and modeling parameters. Although all theoretical evaluation metrics studied were positively correlated with accuracy, we empirically demonstrated that metrics based on specificity-sensitivity and sensitivity-precision are better for testing models, considering that most SDMs are based on unbalanced data. Without independent field validation, we found that using an arbitrary threshold for modelling can be a precarious approach with many possible outcomes, even after getting good evaluation scores. Bioacoustics proved to be important for validating SDMs for the six bat species analyzed, allowing a better refinement of SDMs in large and under-sampled regions, with relatively low sampling effort. Regardless of the species assessing method used, our research highlighted the vital necessity of in situ validation for SDMs.

Abstract:1. Passive acoustic monitoring has become increasingly popular as a practical and cost-effective way of obtaining highly reliable acoustic data in ecological research projects. Increased ease of collecting these data means that, currently, the main bottleneck in ecoacoustic monitoring projects is often the time required for the manual analysis of passively collected recordings. In this study we evaluate the potential and current limitations of BirdNET-Analyzer v2.4, the most advanced and generic deep learning algorithm for bird recognition to date, as a tool to assess bird community composition through the automated analysis of large-scale ecoacoustic data. 2. To this end, we study 3 acoustic datasets comprising a total of 629 environmental soundscapes collected in 194 different sites spread across a 19° latitude span in Europe. We analyze these soundscapes using both BirdNET and manual listening by local expert birders, and we then compare the results obtained through the two methods to evaluate the performance of the algorithm both at the level of each single vocalization and for entire recording sequences (1, 5 or 10 min). 3. Since BirdNET provides a confidence score for each identification, minimum confidence thresholds can be used to filter out identifications with low scores, thus retaining only the most reliable ones. The volume of ecoacoustic data used in this study did not allow us to estimate species-specific minimum confidence thresholds for most taxa, so we instead used and evaluated global confidence thresholds selected for optimized results when consistently applied across all species. 4. Our analyses reveal that BirdNET identifications can be highly reliable if a sufficiently high minimum confidence threshold is used. However, the inevitable trade-off between precision and recall does not allow to obtain satisfactory results for both metrics at the same time. We found that F1-scores remain moderate (<0.5) for all datasets and confidence thresholds studied, and that acoustic datasets of extended duration seem to be currently necessary for BirdNET to provide a reliable and minimally comprehensive picture of the target bird community. We estimate, however, that the usage of species- and context-specific minimum confidence thresholds would allow to substantially improve the global performance benchmarks obtained in this study. 5. We conclude that a judicious use of AI-based identifications provided by BirdNET can represent a powerful method to assist in the assessment of bird community composition through the automated analysis of ecoacoustic data, especially when applied to acoustic datasets of extended duration.

Abstract:Passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) is a sampling technique that has gained increasing popularity in the field of wildlife monitoring and research since it allows for non-invasive and cost-effective collection of acoustic information. Retrieving biological information from PAM recordings can often involve time-consuming sound annotation methodologies, but the advent of acoustic indices can help expedite this process. While correlations between acoustic indices and species richness have been observed in a variety of ecological contexts, these relationships faulter in environments with increased vehicular noise. Here, we assessed the direct impact of vehicular noise on nine acoustic indices through controlled manipulation of vehicular noise within computer-generated bird assemblage soundscapes. Our results demonstrate that recording distance from roadsides and number of passing cars per minute have notable and persistent impacts on acoustic index values, but the magnitude of the effect varies across indices. Four acoustic indices demonstrated greater resilience to vehicular noise interference and may therefore be better suited for developed areas: Bioacoustic Index, Acoustic Complexity Index, Acoustic Diversity Index, and Acoustic Evenness Index. By contributing to the collective understanding of acoustic index behaviours under anthropogenic noise pollution, we hope to better inform their ecological application in human-developed contexts.

Recognition of bird species with birdsong records using machine learning methods

Abstract:The recognition of bird species through the analysis of their vocalizations is a crucial aspect of wildlife conservation and biodiversity monitoring. In this study, the acoustic features of Certhia americana , Certhia brachydactyla , and Certhia familiaris were calculated including the Acoustic complexity index (ACI), Acoustic diversity index (ADI), Acoustic evenness index (AEI), Bioacoustic index (BI), Median of the amplitude envelop (MA), and Normalized Difference Soundscape Index (NDSI). Three machine learning models, Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), were constructed. The results showed that the XGBoost model had the best performance among the three models, with the highest accuracy (0.8365) and the highest AUC (0.8871). This suggests that XGBoost is an effective tool for bird species recognition based on acoustic indices. The study provides a new approach to bird species recognition that utilizes sound data and acoustic characteristics.

Abstract:Soundscape studies are increasingly used to capture landscape‐scale ecological patterns. Yet, several aspects of soundscape diversity remain unexplored. Although some processes influencing acoustic niche usage may operate in the 24‐hour temporal domain, most acoustic indices only capture the diversity of sounds co‐occurring in sound files at a specific time of day. Moreover, many indices do not consider the relationship between the spectral and temporal traits of sounds simultaneously. To provide novel insights into landscape‐scale patterns of acoustic niche usage at broader temporal scales, we present a workflow to quantify soundscape diversity through the lens of trait‐based ecology. Our workflow quantifies the diversity of sound in the 24‐hour acoustic trait space. We introduce the Operational Sound Unit (OSU), a unit of diversity measurement that groups sounds by their shared acoustic properties. Using OSUs and building on the framework of Hill numbers, we propose three metrics that capture different aspects of acoustic trait space usage: (i) soundscape richness; (ii) soundscape diversity; and (iii) soundscape evenness. We demonstrate the use of these metrics by (a) simulating soundscapes to assess if the indices possess a set of desirable behaviours; and (b) quantifying soundscape richness and evenness along a gradient in species richness. We demonstrate that (a) the indices outlined herein have desirable behaviours; and (b) the soundscape richness and evenness are positively correlated with the richness of sound‐producing species. This suggests that more acoustic niche space is occupied when the species richness is higher. Additionally, species‐poor acoustic communities have a higher proportion of rare sounds and use the acoustic space less evenly. Our workflow generates novel insights into acoustic niche usage at a landscape scale and provides a useful tool for biodiversity monitoring. Moreover, Hill numbers can also be used to measure the taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic diversity. Using a common framework for diversity measurement gives metrics a common behaviour, interpretation, and standardised unit, thus ensuring comparisons between soundscape diversity and other metrics represent real‐world ecological patterns rather than mathematical artefacts stemming from different formulae.

Abstract:Passive acoustic devices are increasingly being used to monitor biodiversity. However, few studies have compared the accuracy of acoustic surveys and traditional surveys against ground‐truthed data. Here, we assess whether acoustic recorders used in conjunction with an artificial intelligence (AI) classifier can predict the relative breeding density of four wader species better than traditional fieldworker transect surveys. In a 27‐km2 upland study site, acoustic data were collected at 83 sampling points and analysed using the BirdNet bird‐sound classifier to estimate vocal detection rate at each location; we also carried out concurrent transect bird surveys. To ground‐truth these approaches, intensive field surveys were undertaken to identify each breeding territory of our focal species. With both the acoustic dataset and the transect dataset, we used similar analytical approaches (random forest regression trees) to predict relative territory density across the study site, and then compared these predictions with the territory density obtained from the intensive field surveys. The classifier performed well at identifying the presence of target species' vocalizations within 3‐s periods for Lapwing (accuracy = 0.911), Curlew (0.826) and Oystercatcher (0.841), but less well for Golden Plover (0.699). For Curlew and Oystercatcher, the predictions obtained from the acoustic approach were a better fit to actual territory density than the transect approach. In contrast, for Lapwing and Golden Plover, the transect predictions outperformed the acoustic predictions, with the acoustic model particularly poor for Golden Plover. We attributed these differences to the performance of the classifier, species' ecology and vocal behaviour. Data gathering for the acoustic approach was more time‐efficient than the transect surveys, requiring less than a quarter of the fieldworker days. We conclude that there is high potential for acoustic approaches to augment traditional methods, although species' ecological characteristics should be considered: species that vocalize more frequently, at higher amplitudes and hold larger territories will be better‐suited to sampling‐based acoustic methods.

Abstract:Biodiversity decline is monitored through a multitude of proxies. One of the most common proxies are aggregate indices constructed from time-series of species. Because of their standardised construction and simplicity of interpretation, these indices are often used as official indicators for biodiversity monitoring. However, aggregate indices hide variability among species dynamics from which they are built. Understanding this diversity is essential to interpret indices and avoid missing particular subsets of species with strong dynamics or groups of species with opposing dynamics that may result in little change in the overall index. In this study, we analyse heterogeneity within the most widely used Wild bird indices in Europe, Farmland Bird Index (FaBI) and Forest Bird Index (FoBI) in 20 European countries between 2000 and 2017. We analyse potential heterogeneity in dynamics within FaBI and FoBI of each country. We show that there is structural heterogeneity in dynamics among species as well as clusters of species with differing dynamics co-existing within aggregated indices in most countries studied. This was the case for farmland birds, even though this group shows strong general declines across Europe, and for forest birds that have less coherent long-term dynamics. We further explored whether clusters may be distinctly linked to major ecological traits, habitat specialisation, functional originality and species' thermal niche, thereby potentially indicating ecologically distinct subgroups. We however found few consistent patterns, although habitat specialisation may explains some of variability for forest birds. As new conservation objectives and policies are produced or implemented, it is important to consider the substantial heterogeneity within aggregated indices.

Abstract:Biodiversity loss is a global concern. Current technological advances allow the development of novel tools that can monitor biodiversity remotely with minimal disturbance. One example is passive acoustic monitoring (PAM), which involves recording the soundscape of an area using autonomous recording units, and processing these data using acoustic indices, for example, to estimate the diversity of various vocal animal groups. We explored the hypothesis that data obtained through PAM could also be used to study ecosystem functions. Specifically, we investigated the potential relationship between seven commonly used acoustic indices and insect leaf herbivory, measured as total leaf damage and as the damage from three major insect feeding guilds. Herbivory was quantified on seedlings in 13 plots in four subtropical forests in south China, and acoustic data, representing insect acoustic complexity, were obtained by recording the evening soundscapes in those same locations. Herbivory levels correlated positively with the acoustic entropy index, commonly reported as one of the best-performing indices, whose high values indicate higher acoustic complexity, likely due to greater insect diversity. Relationships for specific feeding guilds were moderately stronger for chewers, indicating that the acoustic indices capture some insect groups more than others (e.g., chewers include soniferous taxa such as crickets, whereas miners are mostly silent). Our findings suggest that the use of PAM to monitor ecosystem functions deserves to be explored further, as this is a research field with unexplored potential. Well-designed targeted studies could help us better understand how to best use novel technologies to monitor ecosystem functions.
