Abstract:In this work, we have designed and synthesized two hybrid nonfused electron acceptors with a perylene diimide pendant (denoted TPDICPBI and TPDICPBI-C6), where TPDICPBI featured a rigid linker, whereas TPDICPBI-C6 incorporated a flexible linker. It was realized via synthesizing the perylene diimide-containing dibromine compounds and performing the Stille reaction followed by Knoevenagel condensation. TPDICPBI with the rigid linker exhibits a much higher glass transition temperature (T g, 208 degrees C) compared to that (92 degrees C) of TPDICPBI-C6 with the flexible linker, which can be attributed to the rigid linker that limits the motion of both TPDIC and the PBI unit. Then, the two electron acceptors were applied to organic solar cells (OSCs). Devices based on TPDICPBI gave a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 9.91%, and TPDICPBI-C6-based devices showed a reduced PCE of 8.39%. Morphological characterization revealed that both TPDICPBI and TPDICPBI-C6 exhibited overall weak aggregation/crystallization properties. The results suggest that by employing rational molecular engineering to adjust the aggregation/crystallization properties of TPDICPBI, the hybrid electron acceptors will give satisfactory photovoltaic performance.

Abstract:The hybridization of different acceptors remains a fertile ground awaiting exploration, to fully promote the properties of both components. The concept of this work is to exploit a new form of fuller-rylene hybrids as promising acceptors by integrating planar rylene dye and spherical fullerene for boosting the power conversion efficiency. The synthesis of the fuller-rylenes via a straightforward synthetic strategy by one-pot Pd-catalyzed cyclization can be scaled-up. Specifically, our strategy allows the supplements and enhancement of absorption in the visible region, much wider structural and electronic variations by installing R-1 groups as well as decorating R-2 on the perylene core at will, and good processability without compromising the superior characteristics of fullerene. Thus, bay-decorated fuller-rylene S-Fuller-PMI revealed a ground-breaking efficiency as high as 8.01%, even outperforming [6,6]-phenyl-C-61-butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM) as a parallel comparison (7.09%). Our exploration paves a new way for the design of high-efficiency acceptors, which are promising alternatives to PC61BM in photovoltaic devices.

Abstract:In the past two years, non-fullerene acceptors including polymers and small molecules have become the focus of many research efforts. Fullerene-free organic solar cells (OSCs) have shown efficiencies of up to 6.8% for solution-processed devices, and even up to 8.4% for vacuum-deposited devices, which have been significantly improved relative to those disclosed 2 years ago (generally <4%). Non-fullerene acceptor materials are a new focus in the OSC field. Tailoring extended fused-rings with electron-deficient groups is an effective strategy for design of acceptors. Here, very recent developments in several systems of fused ring-based electron acceptors, such as halogenated (sub or subna)phthalocyanine, imide-functionalized rylene, and linear fused-rings end capped with electron deficient blocks, are reviewed.

Abstract:Four perylenediimide (PDI) dimers UFPDI, FPDI, UFPDI-T and FPDI-T are synthesized and used as nonfullerene acceptors for the fabrication of organic solar cells with the medium-bandgap polymer PBDB-T as the donor material. These four acceptors with three-dimensional molecular structures display good solubilities in the processing solvent, which is helpful to form nanoscale separation when blended with the polymer donor. The PDI subunits in the unfused PDI dimers UFPDI and UFPDI-T are twisted and the two acceptors display a broad featureless absorption in the visible region. The fused PDI dimers FPDI and FPDI-T display an X-shaped geometry with large dihedral angles of approximately 40° and their PDI subunits are planar. The fused PDI dimers with the X-shaped molecular conformation is helpful for suppressing the formation of large sized aggregations and the planar PDI subunits are in favor of forming closely π-π stacking to ensure reasonable electron mobilities. Moreover, UFPDI-T and FPDI-T with fused thiophene at outer bay positions possess elevated LUMO energy levels, which can enhance the open circuit voltage (Voc) of devices. FPDI-T based devices display much higher and more balanced hole/electron mobilities. A high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 7.5% is achieved for FPDI-T based devices, which is much higher than those of UFPDI (4.19%), FPDI (2.95%) and UFPDI-T (4.61%) based ones. Our results demonstrate that simultaneously inner and outer annulation of PDI dimers is a feasible strategy to design high performance PDI-based acceptors.

Abstract:We design and synthesize four fused-ring electron acceptors based on-6,6,12,12-tetrakis(4-hexylphenyl)-indacenobis(dithieno[3,2-b-2',3'-d]thiophene) as the electron-rich unit and 1,1-dicyanomethylene-3-indanones with 0-2 fluorine substituents as the electron-deficient units. These four molecules exhibit broad (550-850 nm) and strong absorption with high extinction coefficients of (2.1-2.5) x 10(5) M-1 cm(-1). Fluorine substitution downshifts the LUMO energy level, red-shifts the absorption spectrum, and enhances electron mobility. The polymer solar cells based on the fluorinated electron acceptors exhibit power conversion efficiencies as high as 11.5%, much higher than that of their nonfluorinated counterpart (7.7%). We investigate the effects of the fluorine atom number and position on electronic properties, charge transport, film morphology, and photovoltaic properties.
A Rational Design and Synthesis of Cross-Conjugated Small Molecule Acceptors Approaching High-Performance Fullerene-Free Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract:Considering the combination of the advantages of both the acceptor-donor-acceptor and perylene diimide type acceptors, three new cross-conjugated small molecule non-fullerene acceptors were rationally designed and synthesized. Their thermal, optical, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties were systematically investigated. These acceptors exhibit highly extended absorption spectra ranging from 300 to 700 nm as well as appropriate lowest unoccupied molecular orbital levels compared with those of the general acceptors based on perylene diimide. Non-fullerene polymer solar cells based on the resultant acceptors were fabricated in the ITO/PEDOT:PSS/PTB7-Th:acceptor/PFN-Br/Ag configuration. Benefiting from efficient exciton dissociation, reduced bimolecular recombination, and enhanced and balanced electron mobility, the device-based PDIBDT-IT exhibited a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 6.06% with a high short-circuit current density (J(SC)) of 13.60 mA/cm(2), a fill factor (FF) of 60.45%, and an open-circuit voltage (V-OC) of 0.74 V, which was higher than those of PDIBDT-RDN and PDIBDT-ITF. The underlying mechanism was carefully studied and discussed. The extended absorption of PDIBDT-IT contributes to its relatively high PCE; however, the performance will be potentially improved by ehnancing the electron mobility of these acceptors. Our results provide an efficient cross-conjugated approach and great flexibility in fine-tuning physicochemical properties, including absorption spectra and energy levels of the acceptors toward high-performance solar cells.

Abstract:A fused heptacyclic electron acceptor, ITIC5, based on a benzodi(cyclopentadithiophene) core flanked by thiophene-fused termini, is designed, synthesized, and compared with its benzene-fused analogue, ITIC1. ITIC5 with thiophene-fused termini exhibits a narrower optical band gap, stronger and redshifted absorption, and higher electron mobility than ITIC1. The active layer consisting of a wide-bandgap polymer donor J71 and ITIC5 exhibits a smaller acceptor domain, stronger crystallinity, and higher and more balanced mobilities than its J71:ITIC1 counterpart, contributing to efficient exciton dissociation and charge transport. J71:ITIC5 based organic solar cells exhibit a high fill factor of 75.5% and a champion power conversion efficiency of 12.5%, a nearly 40% boost in efficiency with respect to the ITIC1-based control device, suggesting that the thiophene-fused end group has great potential for constructing high-performance fused-ring electron acceptors.
Fused Nonacyclic Electron Acceptors with Additional Alkyl Side Chains for Efficient Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract:Three new non-fullerene acceptors with the core of a fused nonacyclic unit, and the end-capping groups of 3-dicycanovinylindan-1-one are designed and synthesized for polymer solar cells. Those acceptor molecules bear four additional aliphatic side chains at the nonacyclic core, which endow them excellent solubility and crystallization-morphology tunability. Meanwhile, the effect of side chains’ size on the optical absorptions, electrochemical properties, and photovoltaic performance are carefully investigated. The results show that the bulk of side chains just slightly affects optical absorption and electronic energy levels, however, it significantly influences the molecular stacking and morphology separation, as well as the eventual device performance. When they are matched with the donor polymer poly[(2,6-(4,8-bis(5-(2-ethylhexyl)thiophen-2-yl)-benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]dithiophene))-alt-(5,5-(1′,3′-di-2-thienyl-5′,7′-bis(2-ethylhexyl)benzo[1′,2′-c:4′,5′-c′]dithiophene-4,8-dione))] (PBDB-T), the device based on the acceptor with octyl group can deliver the best PCE of 8.57%, which overwhelms those based on other two acceptor materials. This can be attributed to the preferable nanophase separation for their blend films, and high and balanced charge mobility. The results highlight the important role of backbone and side-chain tailoring in designing non-fullerene acceptors towards high-performance polymer solar cells.
Hybrid Nonfused-Ring Electron Acceptors with Fullerene Pendant for High-Efficiency Organic Solar Cells

Abstract:The rapid advance of fused-ring electron acceptors (FREAs) has made them a potential substitute to fullerene-based acceptors and offered new avenues for the construction of organic solar cells (OSCs). Nonfused-ring acceptors (NFRAs) could significantly reduce the synthetic cost while achieving reasonable power conversion efficiencies (PCEs). Widely used fullerene acceptors have been applied as a second acceptor to regulate the morphology, absorption, and electron transport. To take full advantage of both nonfullerene and fullerene acceptors at the same time, we rationally designed and synthesized two novel NFRAs with phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) as the lateral pendent. With the incorporation of fullerene pendent in PCBM-C6 and PCBM-C10, varied UV–vis absorption and photoluminescence (PL) quenching behaviors were observed, and isotropic diffraction patterns were obtained via grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS) measurements. The bulky, spherical, and electronic isotropic fullerene pendent could effectively suppress severe molecular aggregation and form the preferred blend morphology. This strategy significantly improved the efficiencies for exciton separation and charge collection relative to the control acceptor CH3COO-C6. Abstract:Four simple nonfused ring electron acceptors (H–2F, CH3–2F, OCH3–2F, and SCH3–2F) were designed and synthesized. The use of diphenylamine derivatives as the flanking group for the construction of nonfused ring electron acceptors can improve solubility, avoid the formation of oversized aggregates, and enhance the intramolecular charge-transfer effect to extend absorption spectra. The substituent group at the diphenylamine unit has a great impact on the absorption and energy level of acceptors, electron mobility and morphology of blend films. Unlike the other three acceptors, CH3–2F can form ordered molecular stacking and a face-on orientation in the donor/acceptor blend film. A single-crystal analysis demonstrates that CH3–2F can form a two-dimensional electron transport network. Among these four acceptors, CH3–2F-based organic solar cells provide the highest PCE of 12.28%. Recent Progress in Fused-Ring Based Nonfullerene Acceptors for Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract:The progress of bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) polymer solar cells (PSCs) is closely related to the innovation of photoactive materials (donor and acceptor materials), interface engineering, and device optimization. Especially, the development of the photoactive materials dominates the research filed in the past decades. Photoactive materials are basically classified as p-type organic semiconductor donor (D) and an n-type organic semiconductor acceptor (A). In the past two decades, fullerene derivatives are the dominant acceptors for high efficiency PSCs. Nevertheless, the limited absorption and challenging structural tunability of fullerenes hinder further improve the efficiency of PSCs. Encouragingly, the recent progresses of fused-ring based A-D-A type nonfullerene acceptors exhibit great potential in enhancing the photovoltaic performance of devices, driving the power conversion efficiency to over 13%. Such kind of nonfullerene acceptors is usually based on indacenodithiophene (IDT) or its extending backbone core and end-caped with strong electron-withdrawing group. Owing to the strong push-pulling effects, the acceptors possess strong absorption in the visible-NIR region and low-lying HOMO (highest occupied molecular orbital) level, which can realize both high open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current density of the devices. Moreover, the photo-electronic and aggregative properties of the acceptors can be flexibly manipulated via structural design. Many strategies have been successfully employed to tune the energy levels, absorption features, and aggregation properties of the fused-ring based acceptors. In this review, we will summarize the recent progress in developing highly efficient fused-ring based nonfullerene acceptors. We will mainly focus our discussion on the correlating factors of molecular structures to their absorption, molecular energy levels, and photovoltaic performance. It is envisioned that an analysis of the relationship between molecular structures and photovoltaic properties would contribute to a better understanding of this kind of acceptors for high-efficiency PSCs.

Abstract:In this work, a star-shaped planar acceptor named FTr-3PDI was synthesized via ring-fusion between truxene core and three bay-linked perylene diimide (PDI) branches. Compared to the unfused non-planar acceptor Tr-3PDI, FTr-3PDI exhibits better structural rigidity and planarity, as well as more effective conjugation between truxene core and PDI branches. As a result, FTr-3PDI shows up-shifted energy levels, enhanced light absorption coefficient, increased electron mobility, and more favorable phase separation morphology in bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) blend films as compared to Tr-3PDI. Consequently, FTr-3PDI afforded higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) in BHJ solar cells when blended with a polymer donor PTB7-Th. This work demonstrates that ring-fusion is a promising molecular design strategy to combine the merits of truxene and PDI for non-fullerene acceptors used in organic solar cells.

Abstract:Two perylene diimide (PDI) based polymeric acceptors, PFPDIBT-TT2F and PFPDIT-TT2F, which consist of fused-PDI moieties (FPDIBT and FPDIT) and 3,3′-difluoro-2,2′-bithiophene (TT2F) units, has been designed and synthesized. Compared with the unfused-PDI polymer (PPDI-TT2F) as the control molecule, the influence of structural conformation and π-conjugation extension on the performance of all-polymer solar cells has been investigated. Due to both the extended π-conjugation and the torsional polymer skeleton, the device adopting PFPDIT-TT2F achieved an obviously improved PCE of 5.11% comparing with the devices using the other two polymeric acceptors. This study demonstrates that the fused PDIs bridged by a thiophene enables both extended π-conjugation and twisted molecular conformation, and the latter plays a dominant role in the improvement of device performance.

A Perylene Diimide-Containing Acceptor Enables High Fill Factor In Organic Solar Cells

Abstract:A new non-fullerene acceptor PDFC is prepared by introducing perylene diimide into the core of an A-DA ' D-A architecture. Due to the large conjugation and electron-deficient ability of perylene diimide, PDFC shows strong absorption, suitable energy levels and favorable face-on packing. The optimal device realizes a PCE of 12.56% with one of the highest fill factors (81.3%). A PCE of 9.66% is obtained in a 570 nm thick-film device based on PDFC.
