Abstract:The next ubiquitous computing platform, following personal computers and smartphones, is poised to be inherently autonomous, encompassing technologies like drones, robots, and self-driving cars. Ensuring reliability for these autonomous machines is critical. However, current resiliency solutions make fundamental trade-offs between reliability and cost, resulting in significant overhead in performance, energy consumption, and chip area. This is due to the "one-size-fits-all" approach commonly used, where the same protection scheme is applied throughout the entire software computing stack. This paper presents the key insight that to achieve high protection coverage with minimal cost, we must leverage the inherent variations in robustness across different layers of the autonomous machine software stack. Specifically, we demonstrate that various nodes in this complex stack exhibit different levels of robustness against hardware faults. Our findings reveal that the front-end of an autonomous machine's software stack tends to be more robust, whereas the back-end is generally more vulnerable. Building on these inherent robustness differences, we propose a Vulnerability-Adaptive Protection (VAP) design paradigm. In this paradigm, the allocation of protection resources - whether spatially (e.g., through modular redundancy) or temporally (e.g., via re-execution) - is made inversely proportional to the inherent robustness of tasks or algorithms within the autonomous machine system. Experimental results show that VAP provides high protection coverage while maintaining low overhead in both autonomous vehicle and drone systems.

Attack As Defense: Characterizing Adversarial Examples Using Robustness.

Abstract:As a new programming paradigm, deep learning has expanded its application to many real-world problems. At the same time, deep learning based software are found to be vulnerable to adversarial attacks. Though various defense mechanisms have been proposed to improve robustness of deep learning software, many of them are ineffective against adaptive attacks. In this work, we propose a novel characterization to distinguish adversarial examples from benign ones based on the observation that adversarial examples are significantly less robust than benign ones. As existing robustness measurement does not scale to large networks, we propose a novel defense framework, named attack as defense (A2D), to detect adversarial examples by effectively evaluating an example’s robustness. A2D uses the cost of attacking an input for robustness evaluation and identifies those less robust examples as adversarial since less robust examples are easier to attack. Extensive experiment results on MNIST, CIFAR10 and ImageNet show that A2D is more effective than recent promising approaches. We also evaluate our defense against potential adaptive attacks and show that A2D is effective in defending carefully designed adaptive attacks, e.g., the attack success rate drops to 0% on CIFAR10.

Abstract:Attack-defense models play an important role in the design of cybersecurity systems. Here, the authors review some traditional and prevailing attack-defense models along with their weaknesses. Then, they survey some recently proposed paradigm shifts to these models based on which more effective security strategies can be designed. Further, they provide some suggestions on how to adopt the new models, and present challenges that need to be addressed in this field.

Abstract:The past few years have witnessed revolutionary advances in network technology. Along with new techniques such as SDN come lots of new network security challenges. Conventional network security mechanisms are incompetent to overcome these challenges, since they are built on a static network configuration that facilitates attackers in finding the weaknesses of a network. In this article, we conceive a novel conceptual network security mechanism, the evolving defense mechanism (EDM), to resolve current and future security problems. EDM is based on a bio-inspired idea of network configuration variations. According to the security requirements of the system, the user, and the network security state, EDM selects an efficient network configuration variation strategy to prevent corresponding security threats. Combined with SDN implementation, EDM resolves security problems from a new angle and is capable of evolving with new network security technology. We sketch a way to implement EDM and present its reference framework, which serves as an ecosystem and coexisting environment for various kinds of network configuration variations. The proposed mechanism avoids the deficiency of conventional mechanisms and has potential to cope with emerging security threats.

Abstract:The integration of modern computing and advanced communication with power grids has led to the emergence of electrical cyber-physical systems (ECPSs). However, the massive application of communication technologies makes the power grids become more vulnerable to cyber attacks. In this paper, we study the vulnerability of ECPSs and develop defence strategies against cyber attacks. Detection and protection algorithms are proposed to deal with the emergency of cascading failures. Moreover, we propose a weight adjustment strategy to solve the unbalanced power flows problem which is caused by splitting incidents. A MATLAB-based platform with advantages of easy programming, fast calculation, and no damage to systems is built for the offline simulation and analysis of the vulnerability of ECPSs. We also propose a five-aspect method of vulnerability assessment which includes the robustness, economic costs, degree of damage, vulnerable equipment, and trip point. The study is of significance to decision makers as they can get specific advice and defence strategies about a special power system.
Vulnerabilities and Attacks of Inter-device Coordination in Programmable Networks.

Abstract:In programmable networks, some networking systems coordinate data plane switches to realize in-network functions (e.g., in-band network telemetry). However, the vulnerabilities of inter-device coordination are still largely unknown and neglected, which is highly concerning given the increasing popularity of this paradigm. In this paper, we identify three attack scenarios built upon such vulnerabilities, where attackers mislead the behaviors of networking systems that exploit inter-device coordination to execute in-network functions. We implement 20 existing networking systems on Tofino-based switches and a simulator, and attack these systems with the identified attacks. The experimental results indicate that our attacks significantly interfere with the normal operations of the selected networking systems, e.g., the cache hit rate of NetCache drops 38%. Our analysis also demonstrates that none of existing methods can fully mitigate our attacks since they fail to verify the packets for inter-device coordination.

Abstract:Cyberphysical systems (CPS) are ubiquitous in our personal and professional lives, and they promise to dramatically improve micro-communities (e.g., urban farms, hospitals), macro-communities (e.g., cities and metropolises), urban structures (e.g., smart homes and cars), and living structures (e.g., human bodies, synthetic genomes). The question that we address in this article pertains to designing these CPS systems to be resilient-from-the-ground-up, and through progressive learning, resilient-by-reaction. An optimally designed system is resilient to both unique attacks and recurrent attacks, the latter with a lower overhead. Overall, the notion of resilience can be thought of in the light of three main sources of lack of resilience, as follows: exogenous factors, such as natural variations and attack scenarios; mismatch between engineered designs and exogenous factors ranging from DDoS (distributed denial-of-service) attacks or other cybersecurity nightmares, so called "black swan" events, disabling critical services of the municipal electrical grids and other connected infrastructures, data breaches, and network failures; and the fragility of engineered designs themselves encompassing bugs, human-computer interactions (HCI), and the overall complexity of real-world systems. In the paper, our focus is on design and deployment innovations that are broadly applicable across a range of CPS application areas.

Position: Towards Resilience Against Adversarial Examples

Abstract:Current research on defending against adversarial examples focuses primarily on achieving robustness against a single attack type such as $\ell_2$ or $\ell_{\infty}$-bounded attacks. However, the space of possible perturbations is much larger than considered by many existing defenses and is difficult to mathematically model, so the attacker can easily bypass the defense by using a type of attack that is not covered by the defense. In this position paper, we argue that in addition to robustness, we should also aim to develop defense algorithms that are adversarially resilient -- defense algorithms should specify a means to quickly adapt the defended model to be robust against new attacks. We provide a definition of adversarial resilience and outline considerations of designing an adversarially resilient defense. We then introduce a subproblem of adversarial resilience which we call continual adaptive robustness, in which the defender gains knowledge of the formulation of possible perturbation spaces over time and can then update their model based on this information. Additionally, we demonstrate the connection between continual adaptive robustness and previously studied problems of multiattack robustness and unforeseen attack robustness and outline open directions within these fields which can contribute to improving continual adaptive robustness and adversarial resilience.

Abstract:This article explains the distinctions between robustness and resilience in control systems (see "Summary"). Resilience confronts a distinct set of challenges, posing new ones for designing controllers for feedback systems, networks, and machines that prioritize resilience over robustness. The concept of resilience is explored through a three-stage model, emphasizing the need for a proactive preparation and automated response to elastic events. A toy model is first used to illustrate the tradeoffs between resilience and robustness. Then, we delve into contextual dualism and interactionism and introduce game-theoretic paradigms as a unifying framework to consolidate resilience and robustness. The article concludes by discussing the interplay between robustness and resilience, suggesting that a comprehensive theory of resilience and quantification metrics and also formalization through game-theoretic frameworks are necessary. The exploration extends to system-of-systems resilience and various mechanisms, including the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) techniques and nontechnical solutions, like cyberinsurance, to achieve comprehensive resilience in control systems. As we approach 2030, the systems and control community is at the opportune moment to lay the scientific foundations of resilience by bridging feedback control theory, game theory, and learning theory. Resilient control systems will enhance overall quality of life, enable the development of a resilient society, and create a societal-scale impact amid global challenges, such as climate change, conflicts, and cyberinsecurity.

Abstract:Organizations struggle to handle sheer number of vulnerabilities in their cloud environments. The de facto methodology used for prioritizing vulnerabilities is to use Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS). However, CVSS has inherent limitations that makes it not ideal for prioritization. In this work, we propose a new way of prioritizing vulnerabilities. Our approach is inspired by how offensive security practitioners perform penetration testing. We evaluate our approach with a real world case study for a large client, and the accuracy of machine learning to automate the process end to end.

Abstract:Robustness is key to engineering, automation, and science as a whole. However, the property of robustness is often underpinned by costly requirements such as over-provisioning, known uncertainty and predictive models, and known adversaries. These conditions are idealistic, and often not satisfiable. Resilience on the other hand is the capability to endure unexpected disruptions, to recover swiftly from negative events, and bounce back to normality. In this survey article, we analyze how resilience is achieved in networks of agents and multi-robot systems that are able to overcome adversity by leveraging system-wide complementarity, diversity, and redundancy - often involving a reconfiguration of robotic capabilities to provide some key ability that was not present in the system a priori. As society increasingly depends on connected automated systems to provide key infrastructure services (e.g., logistics, transport, and precision agriculture), providing the means to achieving resilient multi-robot systems is paramount. By enumerating the consequences of a system that is not resilient (fragile), we argue that resilience must become a central engineering design consideration. Towards this goal, the community needs to gain clarity on how it is defined, measured, and maintained. We address these questions across foundational robotics domains, spanning perception, control, planning, and learning. One of our key contributions is a formal taxonomy of approaches, which also helps us discuss the defining factors and stressors for a resilient system. Finally, this survey article gives insight as to how resilience may be achieved. Importantly, we highlight open problems that remain to be tackled in order to reap the benefits of resilient robotic systems.

Abstract:A set of about 80 researchers, practitioners, and federal agency program managers participated in the NSF-sponsored Grand Challenges in Resilience Workshop held on Purdue campus on March 19-21, 2019. The workshop was divided into three themes: resilience in cyber, cyber-physical, and socio-technical systems. About 30 attendees in all participated in the discussions of cyber resilience. This article brings out the substantive parts of the challenges and solution approaches that were identified in the cyber resilience theme. In this article, we put forward the substantial challenges in cyber resilience in a few representative application domains and outline foundational solutions to address these challenges. These solutions fall into two broad themes: resilience-by-design and resilience-by-reaction. We use examples of autonomous systems as the application drivers motivating cyber resilience. We focus on some autonomous systems in the near horizon (autonomous ground and aerial vehicles) and also a little more distant (autonomous rescue and relief). For resilience-by-design, we focus on design methods in software that are needed for our cyber systems to be resilient. In contrast, for resilience-by-reaction, we discuss how to make systems resilient by responding, reconfiguring, or recovering at runtime when failures happen. We also discuss the notion of adaptive execution to improve resilience, execution transparently and adaptively among available execution platforms (mobile/embedded, edge, and cloud). For each of the two themes, we survey the current state, and the desired state and ways to get there. We conclude the paper by looking at the research challenges we will have to solve in the short and the mid-term to make the vision of resilient autonomous systems a reality.

Bridging the Gap: A Study of AI-based Vulnerability Management between Industry and Academia

Abstract:Recent research advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) have yielded promising results for automated software vulnerability management. AI-based models are reported to greatly outperform traditional static analysis tools, indicating a substantial workload relief for security engineers. However, the industry remains very cautious and selective about integrating AI-based techniques into their security vulnerability management workflow. To understand the reasons, we conducted a discussion-based study, anchored in the authors' extensive industrial experience and keen observations, to uncover the gap between research and practice in this field. We empirically identified three main barriers preventing the industry from adopting academic models, namely, complicated requirements of scalability and prioritization, limited customization flexibility, and unclear financial implications. Meanwhile, research works are significantly impacted by the lack of extensive real-world security data and expertise. We proposed a set of future directions to help better understand industry expectations, improve the practical usability of AI-based security vulnerability research, and drive a synergistic relationship between industry and academia.

Vulnerability-Aware Resilient Networks: Software Diversity-based Network Adaptation

Abstract:By leveraging the principle of software polyculture to ensure security in a network, we proposed a vulnerability-based software diversity metric to determine how a network topology can be adapted to minimize security vulnerability while maintaining maximum network connectivity. Our proposed software diversity-based adaptation (SDA) scheme estimates a node's software diversity based on the vulnerabilities of software packages installed on other nodes on attack paths reachable to the node and employs it for edge adaptations, such as removing an edge with a neighboring node that exposes high security vulnerability because two connected nodes use the same software packages or a neighboring node may have high software vulnerability or adding an edge with another node with less or no security vulnerability because the two nodes use different software packages or have low vulnerabilities associated with them. To validate the proposed SDA scheme, we conducted extensive experiments comparing the proposed SDA scheme with counterpart baseline schemes in real networks. Our simulation experimental results proved the outperformance of our proposed SDA compared to the existing counterparts and provided insightful findings in terms of the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed SDA scheme under three real network topologies with vastly different network density.

Abstract:The threat of a malicious attack is one of the major security problems in complex networks. Resilience is the system-level self-adjusting ability of a complex network to retain its basic functionality and recover rapidly from major disruptions. Despite numerous heuristic enhancement methods, there is a research gap in maximizing network resilience: current heuristic methods are designed to immunize vital nodes or modify a network to a specific onion-like structure and cannot maximize resilience theoretically via network structure. Here we map complex networks onto a physical elastic system to introduce indices of network resilience, and propose a unified theoretical framework and general approach, which can address the optimal problem of network resilience by slightly modifying network structures (i.e., by adding a set of structural edges). We demonstrate the high efficiency of this approach on three realistic networks as well as two artificial random networks. Case studies show that the proposed approach can maximize the resilience of complex networks while maintaining their topological functionality. This approach helps to unveil hitherto hidden functions of some inconspicuous components, which in turn, can be used to guide the design of resilient systems, offer an effective and efficient approach for mitigating malicious attacks, and furnish self-healing to reconstruct failed infrastructure systems.

Abstract:Robots applications in our daily life increase at an unprecedented pace. As robots will soon operate "out in the wild", we must identify the safety and security vulnerabilities they will face. Robotics researchers and manufacturers focus their attention on new, cheaper, and more reliable applications. Still, they often disregard the operability in adversarial environments where a trusted or untrusted user can jeopardize or even alter the robot's task. In this paper, we identify a new paradigm of security threats in the next generation of robots. These threats fall beyond the known hardware or network-based ones, and we must find new solutions to address them. These new threats include malicious use of the robot's privileged access, tampering with the robot sensors system, and tricking the robot's deliberation into harmful behaviors. We provide a taxonomy of attacks that exploit these vulnerabilities with realistic examples, and we outline effective countermeasures to prevent better, detect, and mitigate them.

Abstract:The escalating complexity of modern computing frameworks has resulted in a surge in the cybersecurity vulnerabilities reported to the National Vulnerability Database (NVD) by practitioners. Despite the fact that the stature of NVD is one of the most significant databases for the latest insights into vulnerabilities, extracting meaningful trends from such a large amount of unstructured data is still challenging without the application of suitable technological methodologies. Previous efforts have mostly concentrated on software vulnerabilities; however, a holistic strategy incorporates approaches for mitigating vulnerabilities, score prediction, and a knowledge-generating system that may extract relevant insights from the Common Weakness Enumeration (CWE) and Common Vulnerability Exchange (CVE) databases is notably absent. As the number of hardware attacks on Internet of Things (IoT) devices continues to rapidly increase, we present the Hardware Vulnerability to Weakness Mapping (HW-V2W-Map) Framework, which is a Machine Learning (ML) framework focusing on hardware vulnerabilities and IoT security. The architecture that we have proposed incorporates an Ontology-driven Storytelling framework, which automates the process of updating the ontology in order to recognize patterns and evolution of vulnerabilities over time and provides approaches for mitigating the vulnerabilities. The repercussions of vulnerabilities can be mitigated as a result of this, and conversely, future exposures can be predicted and prevented. Furthermore, our proposed framework utilized Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT) Large Language Models (LLMs) to provide mitigation suggestions.

Abstract:Vulnerability discovery is base technology in information system development, product testing and counterinformation. At present, vulnerability discovery already has been turned into the hot spot of the global security researches. There are so many kinds of vulnerability discovery methods. Many vulnerabilities has been found each year. But the frame work of the vulnerability discovery is out of the researchers' sight. By analyzing the characters of the targets of vulnerability discovery, and researching the technological process of discovery process, and recovering the potential connections among each way of discovery. We present at first the architecture of vulnerability discovery technologies which divided into five layers namely, base layer, abstraction layer, discovery layer, analysis layer, and exploitation layer, and also explains in great detail the content, role and key supporting technologies of each layer. At last, this paper gives the outlook and the direction for the future work.

Abstract:Adversarial phenomenon has been widely observed in machine learning (ML) systems, especially in those using deep neural networks, describing that ML systems may produce inconsistent and incomprehensible predictions with humans at some particular cases. This phenomenon poses a serious security threat to the practical application of ML systems, and several advanced attack paradigms have been developed to explore it, mainly including backdoor attacks, weight attacks, and adversarial examples. For each individual attack paradigm, various defense paradigms have been developed to improve the model robustness against the corresponding attack paradigm. However, due to the independence and diversity of these defense paradigms, it is difficult to examine the overall robustness of an ML system against different kinds of attacks.This survey aims to build a systematic review of all existing defense paradigms from a unified perspective. Specifically, from the life-cycle perspective, we factorize a complete machine learning system into five stages, including pre-training, training, post-training, deployment, and inference stages, respectively. Then, we present a clear taxonomy to categorize and review representative defense methods at each individual stage. The unified perspective and presented taxonomies not only facilitate the analysis of the mechanism of each defense paradigm but also help us to understand connections and differences among different defense paradigms, which may inspire future research to develop more advanced, comprehensive defenses.
