Abstract:The study discusses the application of the multi-dimensional functionally graded materials ($\varepsilon$/$\sigma$-MFGM) for spacers in offshore bipolar HVDC GIS. The conductivity of the surface functionally graded material ($\sigma$-SFGM) and the permittivity distribution of the bulk functionally graded material ($\varepsilon$-FGM) are designed to coordinately regulate DC and AC electric filed distributions, respectively. The maximum electric field strength of the $\varepsilon$/$\sigma$-MFGM spacer decreases by 83.4% and 18.5% under DC and AC voltages. Meanwhile, the DC and AC flashover voltages of the $\varepsilon$/$\sigma$-MFGM spacer increase by about 34% and 15%, respectively.

Abstract:Functionally graded materials (FGM) are applied in HVDC gas insulated lines (GIL) to control the electric field within the DC insulation system. In HVDC GIL, FGM with a spatial distribution of the electric conductivity (conductivity-FGM) is applied to control the electric field under DC steady state condition. However, besides DC steady state, different DC conditions occur, e.g. DC-on process, polarity reversal and lightning impulse. Under these conditions conductivity-FGM is not sufficient to control the electric field, since these conditions result in transient capacitive fields, where the permittivity is decisive for the electric field. In this paper, we suggest combining conductivity-FGM and a spatial distribution of permittivity (permittivity-FGM) in the spacer material to control the electric field around DC-GIL spacer for various DC-conditions, considering nonlinear material models for the insulating gas and the epoxy spacer. A variation of the spatial distribution of permittivity and conductivity in the spacer is investigated in this paper for an effective field reduction. The results show a reduction of the electric field intensity up to 65.8 %, when conductivity/permittivity-FGM is applied.

Abstract:The gas–solid interface electric field distortion is an essential factor leading to surface insulation failure. This study proposes the conductivity and permittivity-graded coating layer ( $\varepsilon $ -/ $\gamma $ -layer) method, aiming at regulating surface charge and electric field distribution on the gas-insulated transmission line (GIL) spacers under dc/dc superimposed impulse voltages. The iteration optimization algorithm is developed to obtain the optimal conductivity and permittivity distribution of the $\varepsilon $ -/ $\gamma $ -layer. The surface charge and electric field behavior on GIL spacers with the $\varepsilon $ -/ $\gamma $ -layer is investigated through the numerical simulation approach. The polarity of the accumulated surface charges reverses on both the convex and concave sides as the conductivity of the $\varepsilon $ -/ $\gamma $ -layer increases under dc voltages, indicating the dominant mechanism changing from the bulk conductivity model to the surface conductivity model. The electric field distribution is also improved with the $\varepsilon $ -/ $\gamma $ -layer at the optimal permittivity and conductivity distribution. Compared with the raw spacer, the maximum electric field strength with $\varepsilon $ -/ $\gamma $ -layer is reduced by about 31.97% under dc, 20.56% under dc superimposed positive impulse (dc + Po.Im), 42.68% under dc superimposed negative impulse (dc + Ne.Im) on the convex surface, about 64.22% under dc, 21.37% under dc + Po.Im, and 36.46% under dc + Ne.Im on the concave surface, correspondingly. It is hoped that the results of this study could spark novel ideas for the optimal design of dc GIL spacers.

Abstract:UHV GIS spacer is an important component in gas-insulated enclosed switchgear (GIS), and its reliability plays a vital role in the safe and stable operation of power system. Due to the differences of the electrical properties between the central conductor and basin insulation material, the interface formed by the two materials becomes the electric field strength concentration region of the spacer. During the process of operation, the ablation damage arising from the interface occurs, which is caused by partial discharge at the interface. Therefore, it is necessary to study the electric field strength concentration effect at the interface of the spacer. And the electric field strength at the interface was taken as the research object in this paper. The reason why the electric field strength at the interface of the spacer is so concentrated was analyzed by finite element simulation. The method of coating interfacial material was used to suppress the interfacial electric field concentration effect after discussion. Then the model of the spacer that coated with interfacial material was established, and the relationship between the electric field strength on both sides of the interfacial coating materials and the parameters relating to the coating material was derived. Combined with the established model and simulation, the variation of the maximum electric field strength on both sides of the interfacial layer with the dielectric parameters and the coating thickness was analyzed when there are no defects and small defects such as small burrs and bumps at the interface. The simulation results verified the validity of the established model.

Abstract:This study discusses the multidimensional functionally graded materials (MFGMs) for spacers in high voltage direct current gas-insulated transmission lines and switchgears (HVDC GILs/GISs). The effects of surface conductance graded materials ( $\sigma $ -SFGMs) and bulk permittivity graded materials ( $\varepsilon $ -FGMs) on the electric field distributions along the basin-type spacer are investigated under dc stationary and transient conditions. Results show that the $\sigma $ -SFGM spacer can effectively regulate the steady-state electric field, but the regulation effect on the transient electric field is limited when its time constant is longer than the transient time of the applied voltage. The $\varepsilon / \sigma $ -MFGM spacer with both bulk permittivity and surface conductance gradients has the same relaxation effect on the stationary electric field as the $\sigma $ -SFGM spacer and the same effect on the transient electric field as the $\varepsilon $ -FGM spacer, which can coordinately regulate the electric field distribution under multiple operating conditions in HVDC GIL/GIS. Compared to the uniform spacer, the $\varepsilon / \sigma $ -MFGM spacer can reduce the maximum electric field strengths under steady state, switching-on, and dc-impulse conditions by 38.9%, 18.6%, and 28.2%, respectively.

Abstract:This article conducts a simulation study on the parameter design of the superficially nonlinear-conductivity material (SNCM) and the permittivity functionally graded material ( $\varepsilon $ -FGM) for regulating the electric field distribution around the tri-post insulator in high-voltage direct-current gas-insulated transmission lines (HVdc GILs). The SNCM insulator is designed to adaptively relax the electric field distortion under variable voltages and temperatures while controlling the surface power loss within a proper range. The $\varepsilon $ -FGM insulator aims to reduce the electric field strength under the polarity reversal voltage. By optimizing its permittivity gradient between 3 and 12, the maximum electric field after polarity reversal is decreased by 24.6%. The multidimensional functional material (MDFM) consists of the SNCM on its surface and the $\varepsilon $ -FGM in its bulk, combining their advantages in regulating the electric field under both stationary and transient conditions. Compared with the SNCM insulator, the MDFM insulator has comparable electric field optimization effects but much lower surface power loss by two orders of magnitude.

Abstract:This study discusses the application of the surface conductivity gradient materials ($\sigma $ -SFGMs) for relaxing the electric field concentration around the epoxy-based spacer in high-voltage direct current gas-insulated transmission lines (HVDC GIL). Based on the ±500-kV HVDC GIL model, the iterative method is applied to optimize the thickness gradients of the $\sigma $ -SFGM layers on convex and concave surfaces of the basin-type spacer. It is proven that the $\sigma $ -SFGM layers can significantly suppress the electric field distortion around the high voltage electrode by increasing the homopolar charges and reducing the heteropolar charges on both spacer surfaces. To fabricate the $\sigma $ -SFGM spacer, a thickness-graded layer of high conductivity is formed on a truncated cone-type spacer by electrospinning. Experimental test results show that the application of $\sigma $ -SFGM exhibits a promoting effect of about 11.5% on the dc flashover voltage of the cone-type spacer. The $\sigma $ -SFGM spacer can withstand over ten thermal-shock cycles, indicating that the $\sigma $ -SFGM layer fabricated by electrospinning is more reliable than that fabricated by dip coating.

Abstract:The presence of metal particles is responsible for the unpredictable flashover faults of spacers in gas insulated switchgears (GIS). In this study, an innovative method is put forward to actively expel metal particles by utilizing the permittivity functionally graded material (ε-FGM) spacer. Based on an 800 kV GIS model, the electric field distribution and the metal particle motion around the spacers are studied by numerical simulation. Then, the particle motion and the flashover tests are both conducted based on two downsized samples of the uniform and the ε-FGM spacers. Results show that the maximum electric field is located at the triple junction of the uniform spacer, and the metal particles tend to jump towards the spacer under Coulomb force, reducing the flashover voltage by up to 12%. By applying the ε-FGM spacer, the electric field at the triple junction is decreased by 26.2%, improving the flashover voltage by 11.5%. Meanwhile, the bending orientation of electric field lines surrounding the ε-FGM spacer is changed, causing an opposite Coulomb force compared to the uniform spacer in the axial orientation. Therefore, metal particles released nearby are expelled away from the ε-FGM spacer, and the corresponding flashover voltages are almost the same as that in the case of none particle.

Influences of Semi-Conductive Coatings on the Electric Field Distribution of GIS Spacer Interface

Abstract:Ultra high voltage (UHV) AC Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) spacer is one of the most important components in GIS. In the process of long-term operation, partial discharge often occurs at the interface between the center conductor and epoxy resin (EP) basin body if this interface has some defects, and the discharge sometimes even leads to the crack of basin. It has become a bottleneck for the safe and stable operation of GIS equipment. In this paper, the interface material with EP, hydroxy-terminated butadiene nitrile liquid rubber (HTBN) and conductive carbon black was created, and its parameters were measured. With three-dimensional finite element method, the interfacial structure with semi-conductive coatings were designed, the calculation models of GIS spacer which had interfacial layer structure were built. The influences of semi-conductive coatings on the electric field distribution of the interface between center conductor and basin body were studied. To different defects on the conductor surface, the improvement of the semi-conductive coatings to the electric field distribution was analyzed. Compared with the interfacial layer without coatings, there is an 80 percent decrease of electric field intensity of surface defects than that without coatings, which proves its significant shielding effect. The rationality of GIS spacer's performance of material and structure of semi-conductive coatings are verified, which is helpful to improve the uneven distribution of electric field at the interface of UHV electrical equipment.

Abstract:Dielectrically graded insulation (DGI) serving as an embodiment of functionally graded materials in electrical insulation field displays extraordinary insulation strength compared with conventional uniform composite materials. In recent years, the design and fabrication of DGI toward industrial applications have become urgent issues. Here, we reported a construction strategy of DGI for gas-insulated equipment. A topology optimization method was applied to optimize the electric ( $E$ ) field distribution of a 126-kV disk-type spacer with actual size. The spatial distribution of relative permittivity ( $\varepsilon _{r}$ ) inside spacer was designed to improve the $E$ -field distributions along the spacer surface and near the triple junction region. Influences of design parameters on $\varepsilon _{r}$ distributions and the resultant $E$ -field mitigation degree were analyzed. Appropriate values of design parameters that balance the structure processability and $E$ -field mitigation results were selected. A three-layer dielectrically graded spacer, including high, medium, and low $\varepsilon _{r}$ regions, was constructed based on the topology optimization results. In addition, the influence of the area of design domain on the optimization results was analyzed. Numerical results indicate that the $E$ -field distribution of designed dielectrically graded spacers is significantly improved compared with that of a homogeneous spacer. In the situation with simplified electrode configuration, the maximum $E$ -field strength along the spacer and at triple junction area could be decreased by 10.5% and 43.4%, respectively. This three-layer DGI construction strategy is promising to apply industrially.

Abstract:The design of spacers for operation under DC stress is a challenging part for gas-insulated substations (GIS) and gas-insulated transmission lines (GIL). This series of papers has proposed a novel way to develop a spacer for operation under high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) conditions. In this part, a model spacer based on adaptively controlling surface charges is briefly introduced and is verified using routine tests, including electric field strength simulations, X-ray imaging, mechanical simulation and mechanical testing. In addition, the thermal expansion coefficient and thermal conductivity of the spacer are also measured to investigate its operational stability under various thermodynamic conditions. The results show that the geometrical improvements and SiC doping are available to reduce both the normal electric field strength around the central electrode and the tangential electric field strength around the enclosure. The mechanical properties of the concave side of the spacer are slightly lower than those of the regular spacer, while the mechanical properties of the convex side demonstrate the major improvements during both simulations and water pressure-based destructive testing. It is hoped that this work will provide a new approach for the design of spacers for use in HVDC GIS or GIL.
Nonlinear Effective Permittivity of Field Grading Composite Dielectrics

Abstract:Field grading composite dielectrics with good nonlinear electrical properties can function as smart materials for electrical field control in a high-voltage apparatus. Besides the well-documented nonlinear conducting behavior, the field-dependent effective permittivity of field grading composites were also reported; however, in-depth research on the mechanism and influencing factors of this nonlinear permittivity are absent. This paper theoretically discusses the origin of the nonlinear effective permittivity, and the mechanism is illustrated through the waveform analysis of the nonlinear response of ZnO microvaristor/silicone rubber composites under a pure AC field. The field-dependent effective permittivity and loss property of the ZnO composites are measured by a dielectric spectrometer in both DC and AC fields under different frequencies. Through comparison of measurement results and theoretical models, the influence of the filler concentration, frequency, and time domain characteristics of the applied field on the nonlinear permittivity of the field grading composites are well explained. This paper provides insight into the nonlinear permittivity of field grading composites, and will be helpful for further tuning the performance of field grading composites.
Parameter Design of Surface Functionally Graded Materials for HVDC GIL Spacer under Variable Temperature Gradient

Abstract:To optimize the electric field distribution of HVDC GIL spacer under working conditions, the variable temperature surface functionally graded materials (VT-SFGM) spacer with consideration of the room and gradient temperature are designed. After iterative optimization, the convex surface coating thickness of VT-SFGM spacer presents a U-shaped distribution. Under the constant temperature condition, the electric field strength of the VT-SFGM spacer at the same position is reduced by 49.5%. As the temperature rises, the high electric field area of the uniform spacer gradually transfers form HV conductor to GND shell. Under the temperature gradient of 60°C, the maximum electric field strength of VTSFGM spacer decreases by 64%. Controlling Electric Fields Spatially by Graded Metamaterials: Implication on Enhanced Nonlinear Optical Responses

Abstract:The local electric field of a graded metal-dielectric cylinder, with complex permittivity given by a spatially dependent Drude model, has been derived analytically in terms of hypergeometric functions. Our results show that the electric field inside the cylinder can be confined in desired positions. Thus one can achieve the control of electric fields by fabricating graded metamaterials with specific material parameters. The enhanced nonlinear optical responses are also examined. The results suggest that the gradation-controlled field distribution may be a consequence of a combination of surface plasmon resonance and microgeometry in graded metamaterials.

Abstract:Gas insulated switchgear (GIS) has been widely applied in substation because of its high reliability and compactness. GIS spacers are critical components which influence the insulation level of GIS, playing supporting conductor, isolating chamber and electrical insulation roles. Defects in spacer like voids, metallic particles, protrusions or pits introduced during manufacturing, installation and operating process are considered to contribute to degradation of GIS. The defects are more likely to cause insulation failure when considering UHV AC GIS spacer. In this paper, a basic calculation model of a part of GIS was established using ANSYS with an epoxy spacer included. Two kinds of defects were studied. Metallic particles with different sizes sticking to or floating on the surface of spacer were simulated. The laws of electrical field distribution with size and position of metallic particles were summarized. Voids of different sizes were modeled in different positions in the epoxy body of spacer to investigate how they affect electrical field distribution. Results indicated that electrical field would be enhanced at the three point of epoxy, metal and SF6 for sticking particles. Floating particles would enhance electrical field of nearby surface of spacer. Sizes and positions hardly influenced the enhancement degrees of inner voids.

Abstract:Spacers are key components that are used to support high voltage conductors in gas-insulated substations or gas-insulated lines. The analysis of the surface charge patterns on spacers remains a difficult task, which requires a comprehensive understanding of the physical mechanism of the gas-solid interface charging phenomenon. In this letter, we reported a field dependent property of surface charge accumulation patterns on spacers under DC stress. We verified this finding through experiment, and further, we put forward a field-dependent charging model based on dominant charge transport behavior under different electric fields. It was found that the charging characteristics of the spacer are dominated by the Ohmic conduction from the volume below an electric field of 2.5 kV/mm. When the electric field stress is higher than 2.5 kV/mm, the charging property of spacers is dominated by the enhanced gas ionization according to Townsend's law. The correctness of this model was verified by surface charge measurement results in literature studies, and a method for determining the dominant mechanism of charge accumulation under different electric fields was proposed.

Abstract:Surface charging phenomena on DC GIL spacers is a complicated process affected by lots of factors, among which surface conductivity is an important dielectrics parameter. In this study, experimental and theoretical research are carried out to investigate the effects of non-uniform surface conductivity on surface charge accumulation behaviours of downsized HVDC GIL spacers. A SiC/epoxy layer is partially coated on alumina/epoxy spacers to form a non-uniform surface conductivity. The coating patterns include sector-shaped coating and ring-shaped coating. The applied stress is DC voltage. The accumulated surface charges show a rising first and then decreasing trend with the increase of S iC contents in coated area. When surface conductivity is high enough, there is almost no charge accumulation. Bipolar charges, which are generally observed on raw alumina/epoxy spacers, are found to be preferable to accumulate at interface region between high and low surface conductivity. The orientation of bipolar charges is determined by the distribution of inhomogeneous surface conductivity. The corresponding mechanism is revealed on the basis of experiment and simulation results which would be helpful for designing highly reliable and stable HVDC GIL.

Abstract:Gas insulated switchgear (GIS) can encounter the voltage that combines both AC and DC components in a bipolar HVDC. systems. To enhance the insulation performance of the epoxy insulator, the researchers developed a new type of material called multi-dimensional functionally graded materials (MFGM). This material integrates two types of materials, namely the surface nonlinear conductivity materials (SNCM) and the bulk permittivity graded materials ($\varepsilon-\mathbf{F G M}$). The MFGM insulator consists of SNCM layer and $\varepsilon-\mathbf{F G M}$ bulk, which were produced through air spraying technology and layer-by-layer pouring methods. Results indicate that the MFGM insulator reduces the electric field intensity around the HV triple junction by more than 37% and 39% under AC and DC voltages, respectively. Furthermore, the MFGM insulator also raises the flashover voltages under AC and DC voltages by 17.5% and 27.5%, respectively, compared to a uniform insulator (U-insulator). The MFGM insulator can work under both stationary and transient conditions and shows potential for use in HVDC compact gas-insulated apparatuses.
Modeling of Electric Stress Control in HV Bushing Using Field Grading Material

Abstract:The electric stress control is important for improving insulation performance and upgrading design of power devices. In recent years, the technique of applying field grading material (FGM) is proposed for the designs of cable accessories and machine insulation, but fewer applications in HV bushing realm. In this paper, modeling of electric stress control in a simplified HV wall bushing is presented. The hollow insulator employs an artificial field grading material (FGM) with linear (constant) and nonlinear (field-dependent) conductivity, respectively. First, the electric stress control theory of FGM is analyzed. Then, the COMSOL Multiphysics is used to solve a numerical model of bushing. In the process, the FGM is equivalent to a thin layer of surface conduction. Hence, an additional term of surface current density is added into the boundary equation. The simulation model is calculated under dc and ac (50 Hz sinusoidal) voltages respectively with both linear and nonlinear FGM. At last, the application conditions and effects of using FGM for HV bushing are discussed.
