Abstract:The purposes of this paper have to discuss issues related to Network Traffic Management. A relatively new category of network management is fast becoming a necessity in converged business Networks. Mid-sized and large organizations are finding they must control network traffic behavior to assure that their strategic applications always get the resources they need to perform optimally. Controlling network traffic requires limiting bandwidth to certain applications, guaranteeing minimum bandwidth to others, and marking traffic with high or low priorities. This exercise is called Network Traffic Management.
Networking and Internet Architecture
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper primarily explores the issue of network traffic management, aiming to address the problem of uneven strategic application resource allocation caused by excessive network traffic in medium and large organizations. Specifically, the paper discusses the following aspects: 1. **Definition and Background**: It first defines network traffic and briefly describes the problem of network congestion in computer networks due to the excessive exchange of information caused by frequent resource requests and task processing by communication devices. 2. **Importance of Traffic Management**: It emphasizes the necessity of controlling network traffic, including measures such as limiting the bandwidth of certain applications, ensuring the minimum bandwidth requirements for critical applications, and prioritizing data packets. 3. **Methods of Measuring Network Traffic**: It introduces two methods: active measurement (such as injecting probes, Ping tests) and passive measurement (such as analyzing router statistics, server logs), and lists some commonly used measurement tools. 4. **Traffic Analysis**: It analyzes the different patterns of traffic on Local Area Networks (LAN) and Wide Area Networks (WAN), pointing out that LAN traffic exhibits self-similarity, while WAN traffic may show random, Poisson distribution, or bursty characteristics. 5. **Traffic Management Techniques**: It describes how to optimize network performance by reasonably allocating bandwidth to ensure that important applications can obtain sufficient resource support. In summary, the core of this paper is to propose a systematic solution to help enterprises and organizations effectively manage and optimize their network traffic, thereby improving overall work efficiency and service quality.
