Abstract:In this work we count the number of satisfying states of triangulations of a convex n-gon using the transfer matrix method. We show an exponential (in n) lower bound. We also give the exact formula for the number of satisfying states of a strip of triangles.

Abstract:We consider the combinatorial question of how many convex polygons can be made by using the edges taken from a fixed triangulation of n vertices. For general triangulations, there can be exponentially many: we show a construction that has Omega(1.5028^n) convex polygons, and prove an O(1.62^n) upper bound in the worst case. If the triangulation is fat (every triangle has its angles lower-bounded by a constant delta>0), then there can be only polynomially many. We also consider the problem of counting convex outerplanar polygons (i.e., they contain no vertices of the triangulation in their interiors) in the same triangulations. In this setting, we get the same exponential bounds in general triangulations, and lower polynomial bounds in fat triangulations. If the triangulation is furthermore compact (the ratio between the longest and shortest distance between any two vertices is bounded), the bounds drop further to Theta (n^2) for general convex outerplanar polygons, and Theta (n) for fat convex outerplanar polygons.

Abstract:We show that every planar triangulation on $n>10$ vertices has a dominating set of size $n/7=n/3.5$. This approaches the $n/4$ bound conjectured by Matheson and Tarjan [MT'96], and improves significantly on the previous best bound of $17n/53\approx n/3.117$ by Špacapan [Š'20]. From our proof it follows that every 3-connected $n$-vertex near-triangulation (except for 3 sporadic examples) has a dominating set of size $n/3.5$. On the other hand, for 3-connected near-triangulations, we show a lower bound of $3(n-1)/11\approx n/3.666$, demonstrating that the conjecture by Matheson and Tarjan [MT'96] cannot be strengthened to 3-connected near-triangulations. Our proof uses a penalty function that, aside from the number of vertices, penalises vertices of degree 2 and specific constellations of neighbours of degree 3 along the boundary of the outer face. To facilitate induction, we not only consider near-triangulations, but a wider class of graphs (skeletal triangulations), allowing us to delete vertices more freely. Our main technical contribution is a set of attachments, that are small graphs we inductively attach to our graph, in order both to remember whether existing vertices are already dominated, and that serve as a tool in a divide and conquer approach. Along with a well-chosen potential function, we thus both remove and add vertices during the induction proof. We complement our proof with a constructive algorithm that returns a dominating set of size $\le 2n/7$. Our algorithm has a quadratic running time.

The number of inscribed and circumscribed graphs of a convex polyhedron

Abstract:In the paper we prove that the number of graphs inscribed into graph of a convex polyhedron and circumscribed around another graph does not exceed 4. For this we first studied Poncelet type problem about the number of convex $n$-gons inscribed into one convex $n$-gon and circumscribed around another convex $n$-gon. It is proved that their number is also at most 4. This contrasts with Poncelet type porisms where usually infinitude of such polygons is proved, provided that one such polygon already exists. An inequality involving ratio of lengths of line segments is used. Alternative way of using Maclaurin-Braikenridge's conic generation method is also discussed. Properties related to constructibility with straightedge and compass are also studied. A new proof, based on mathematical induction, of generalized Maclaurin- Braikenridge's theorem is given. We also gave examples of regular polygons and a polyhedron for which number 4 is realized.

Abstract:In this paper we discuss face numbers of generalised triangulations of manifolds in arbitrary dimensions. This is motivated by the study of triangulations of simply connected $4$-manifolds: We observe that, for a triangulation $\mathcal{T}$ of a simply connected $4$-manifold $\mathcal{M}$ with $n$ pentachora, an upper bound on the number of vertices $v$ of $\mathcal{T}$ as a function of $n$ yields a lower bound for $n$ depending only on the second Betti number $\beta_2(\mathcal{M})$ of $\mathcal{M}$. Within this framework we conjecture that $v \leq \frac{n}{2}+4$, implying $n \geq 2\beta_2(\mathcal{M})$. In forthcoming work by the authors, this conjectured bound is shown to be almost tight for all values of $\beta_2(\mathcal{M})$, with a gap of at most two.

Abstract:We define a new combinatorial class of triangulations of closed 3-manifolds, satisfying a weak version of 0-efficiency combined with a weak version of minimality, and study them using twisted squares. As an application, we obtain strong restrictions on the topology of a 3-manifold from the existence of non-smooth maxima of the volume function on the space of circle-valued angle structures.
Connected Dominating Sets in Triangulations

Abstract:We show that every $n$-vertex triangulation has a connected dominating set of size at most $10n/21$. Equivalently, every $n$ vertex triangulation has a spanning tree with at least $11n/21$ leaves. Prior to the current work, the best known bounds were $n/2$, which follows from work of Albertson, Berman, Hutchinson, and Thomassen (J. Graph Theory \textbf{14}(2):247--258). One immediate consequence of this result is an improved bound for the SEFENOMAP graph drawing problem of Angelini, Evans, Frati, and Gudmundsson (J. Graph Theory \textbf{82}(1):45--64). As a second application, we show that for every set $P$ of $\lceil 11n/21\rceil$ points in $\R^2$ every $n$-vertex planar graph has a one-bend non-crossing drawing in which some set of $11n/21$ vertices is drawn on the points of $P$. The main result extends to $n$-vertex triangulations of genus-$g$ surfaces, and implies that these have connected dominating sets of size at most $10n/21+O(\sqrt{gn})$.

Abstract:Almost 50 years ago Erdős and Purdy asked the following question: Given n points in the plane, how many triangles can be approximate congruent to equilateral triangles? They pointed out that by dividing the points evenly into three small clusters built around the three vertices of a fixed equilateral triangle, one gets at least such approximate copies. In this paper we provide a matching upper bound and thereby answer their question. More generally, for every triangle T we determine the maximum number of approximate congruent triangles to T in a point set of size n . Parts of our proof are based on hypergraph Turán theory: for each point set in the plane and a triangle T , we construct a 3-uniform hypergraph , which contains no hypergraph as a subgraph from a family of forbidden hypergraphs . Our upper bound on the number of edges of will determine the maximum number of triangles that are approximate congruent to T .

Abstract:A $k$-truss is an edge-induced subgraph $H$ such that each of its edges belongs to at least $k-2$ triangles of $H$. This notion has been introduced around ten years ago in social network analysis and security, as a form of cohesive subgraph that is rich of triangles and less stringent than the clique. The \emph{trussness} of a graph is the maximum $k$ such that a $k$-truss exists. The problem of computing $k$-trusses has been largely investigated from the practical and engineering point of view. On the other hand, the theoretical side of the problem has received much less attention, despite presenting interesting challenges. The existing methods share a common design, based on iteratively removing the edge with smallest support, where the support of an edge is the number of triangles containing it. The aim of this paper is studying algorithmic aspects of graph trussness. While it is possible to show that the time complexity of computing exactly the graph trussness and that of counting/listing all triangles is inherently the same, we provide efficient algorithms for estimating its value, under suitable conditions, with significantly lower complexity than the exact approach. In particular, we provide a $(1 \pm \epsilon)$-approximation algorithm that is asymptotically faster than the exact approach, on graphs which contain $\omega(m \, polylog(n))$ triangles, and has the same running time on graphs that do not. For the latter case, we also show that it is impossible to obtain an approximation algorithm with faster running time than the one of the exact approach when the number of triangles is $O(m)$, unless well known conjectures on triangle-freeness and Boolean matrix multiplication are false.

Abstract:Consider two regions in the plane, bounded by an $n$-gon and an $m$-gon, respectively. At most how many connected components can there be in their intersection? This question was asked by Croft. We answer this asymptotically, proving the bounds $$\left\lfloor \frac{m}{2}\right\rfloor \cdot \left\lfloor \frac{n}{2}\right\rfloor\le f(n,m)\le \left\lfloor \frac{m}{2}\right\rfloor \cdot \frac{n}{2} + \frac{m}{2} $$ where $f(n,m)$ denotes the maximal number of components and $m\le n$. Furthermore, we give an exact answer to the related question of finding the maximal number of components if the $m$-gon is required to be convex: $\left \lfloor \frac{m+n-2}{2}\right\rfloor$ if $n\ge m+2$ and $n-2$ otherwise.

Abstract:We show that for fixed $d>3$ and $n$ growing to infinity there are at least $(n!)^{d-2 \pm o(1)}$ different labeled combinatorial types of $d$-polytopes with $n$ vertices. This is about the square of the previous best lower bounds. As an intermediate step, we show that certain neighborly polytopes (such as particular realizations of cyclic polytopes) have at least $(n!)^{ \lfloor(d-1)/2\rfloor \pm o(1)}$ regular triangulations.

Counting geodesics between surface triangulations

Abstract:Given a surface $\Sigma$ equipped with a set $P$ of marked points, we consider the triangulations of $\Sigma$ with vertex set $P$. The flip-graph of $\Sigma$ whose vertices are these triangulations, and whose edges correspond to flipping arcs appears in the study of moduli spaces and mapping class groups. We consider the number of geodesics in the flip-graph of $\Sigma$ between two triangulations as a function of their distance. We show that this number grows exponentially provided the surface has enough topology, and that in the remaining cases the growth is polynomial.

Happy Ending: An Empty Hexagon in Every Set of 30 Points

Abstract:Satisfiability solving has been used to tackle a range of long-standing open math problems in recent years. We add another success by solving a geometry problem that originated a century ago. In the 1930s, Esther Klein's exploration of unavoidable shapes in planar point sets in general position showed that every set of five points includes four points in convex position. For a long time, it was open if an empty hexagon, i.e., six points in convex position without a point inside, can be avoided. In 2006, Gerken and Nicolás independently proved that the answer is no. We establish the exact bound: Every 30-point set in the plane in general position contains an empty hexagon. Our key contributions include an effective, compact encoding and a search-space partitioning strategy enabling linear-time speedups even when using thousands of cores.

On the other hand, we show that there is a number that is not a member of . In addition, we prove that there are two interlacing sequences with such that for all t. Moreover, we obtain a generalisation of these results for the set of the possible number of copies of a connected graph H in a graph on n vertices.

Abstract:Bollobás and Nikiforov conjectured that for any graph $G \neq K_n$ with $m$ edges \[ \lambda_1^2+\lambda_2^2\le \bigg( 1-\frac{1}{\omega(G)}\bigg)2m\] where $\lambda_1$ and $\lambda_2$ denote the two largest eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix $A(G)$, and $\omega$ denotes the clique number of $G$. This conjecture was recently verified for triangle-free graphs by Lin, Ning and Wu and for regular graphs by Zhang. Elphick, Wocjan and Linz proposed a generalization of this conjecture. In this note, we verify this generalized conjecture for the family of graphs on $m$ edges, which contain at most $O(m^{1.5-\varepsilon})$ triangles for some $\varepsilon > 0$. In particular, we show that the conjecture is true for planar graphs, book-free graphs and cycle-free graphs.

Abstract:The cross-ratio degree problem counts configurations of n points on P^1 with n-3 prescribed cross-ratios. Cross-ratio degrees arise in many corners of combinatorics and geometry, but their structure is not well-understood in general. Interestingly, examining various special cases of the problem can yield combinatorial structures that are both diverse and rich. In this paper we prove a simple closed formula for a class of cross-ratio degrees indexed by triangulations of an n-gon; these degrees are connected to the geometry of the real locus of M_{0,n}, and to positive geometry.

Filling a triangulation of the 2-sphere

Abstract:Define the tet-volume of a triangulation of the 2-sphere to be the minimum number of tetrahedra in a 3-complex of which it is the boundary, and let $d(v)$ be the maximum tet-volume for $v$-vertex triangulations. In 1986 Sleator, Tarjan, and Thurston (STT) proved that $d(v) = 2v-10$ holds for large $v$, and conjectured that it holds for all $v \geq 13$. Their proof used hyperbolic polyhedra of large volume. They suggested using more general notions of volume instead. In work that was all but lost, Mathieu and Thurston used this approach to outline a combinatorial proof of the STT asymptotic result. Here we use a much simplified version of their approach to prove the full conjecture. This implies STT's weaker conjecture, proven by Pournin in 2014, characterizing the maximum rotation distance between trees.

Abstract:It is known that the flip distance between two triangulations of a convex polygon is related to the smallest number of tetrahedra in the triangulation of some polyhedron. The latter was used to compute the diameter of the flip graph of convex polygons with a large number of vertices. However, it is yet unknown whether the flip distance and this smallest number of tetrahedra are always the same or even close. In this work, we find examples to show that the ratio between these two numbers can be arbitrarily close to 3 2 . We also propose two conjectures in the end, one about this ratio, and the other may have some implications on when two triangulations can achieve maximal distance.
