Abstract:Polygonal vertices convexo-concave determining is one of the fundamental issues in Computer Graphics. In this paper, plane space is separated into 2 region defined as positive region and negative region based on the direction and the stretched of the line segment. Accordingly transform identification of convexity or concavity of the next vertices into identification of the region position. Consequently the operation of multiplication can be averted. In order to do the best in practical determining, 3 areas is separated of the plane space, whereas not the same as earlier. These area are based on two horizontal lines, two vertical lines and two 45°diagonal lines through the vertices of the line segment. Because the partition is based on the polygon vertices and it has dynamic, therefore it's a dynamic distinct partition. These areas are defined as positive area, negative area or mixed area. In the case of the positive area or the negative area, we can confirm the convexity or concavity of the vertices through simple distinguishing. The result of test indicates it is a simple, highly efficient and reliable algorithm with high speed requires only (n/4) multiplication and(12n) comparisons.

Abstract:In this paper we consider sets of points in the plane with rational distances from a prescribed finite set of $n$ rational points. We show that for $n\le 3$, the points are dense in the real topology. On the other hand, for $n\ge 4$, we show that they correspond to rational points in a surface of general type, hence conjecturally degenerate. However, at the present, we lack methods to prove this, given the fact that the surface is simply-connected, as we shall show. We give explicit proofs as well as describe in detail the geometry of the surfaces involved. In addition we discuss certain cases of density of points with distances in certain ring of integers.

Abstract:In 1946 Erd\H os asked for the maximum number of unit distances, $u(n)$, among $n$ points in the plane. He showed that $u(n)> n^{1+c/\log\log n}$ and conjectured that this was the true magnitude. The best known upper bound is $u(n)<cn^{4/3}$, due to Spencer, Szemerédi and Trotter. We show that the upper bound $n^{1+6/\sqrt{\log n}}$ holds if we only consider unit distances with rational angle, by which we mean that the line through the pair of points makes a rational angle in degrees with the x-axis. Using an algebraic theorem of Mann we get a uniform bound on the number of paths between two fixed vertices in the unit distance graph, giving a contradiction if there are too many unit distances with rational angle. This bound holds if we consider rational distances instead of unit distances as long as there are no three points on a line. A superlinear lower bound is given, due to Erd\H os and Purdy. If we have at most $n^{\alpha}$ points on a line then we get the bound $O(n^{1+\alpha})$ or $n^{1+\alpha+6/\sqrt{\log n}}$ for the number of rational distances with rational angle depending on whether $\alpha\ge 1/2$ or $\alpha < 1/2$ respectively.

Hyperplanes Avoiding Problem and Integer Points Counting in Polyhedra

Abstract:In our work, we consider the problem of computing a vector $x \in Z^n$ of minimum $\|\cdot\|_p$-norm such that $a^\top x \not= a_0$, for any vector $(a,a_0)$ from a given subset of $Z^n$ of size $m$. In other words, we search for a vector of minimum norm that avoids a given finite set of hyperplanes, which is natural to call as the $\textit{Hyperplanes Avoiding Problem}$. This problem naturally appears as a subproblem in Barvinok-type algorithms for counting integer points in polyhedra. More precisely, it appears when one needs to evaluate certain rational generating functions in an avoidable critical point. We show that: 1) With respect to $\|\cdot\|_1$, the problem admits a feasible solution $x$ with $\|x\|_1 \leq (m+n)/2$, and show that such solution can be constructed by a deterministic polynomial-time algorithm with $O(n \cdot m)$ operations. Moreover, this inequality is the best possible. This is a significant improvement over the previous randomized algorithm, which computes $x$ with a guaranty $\|x\|_{1} \leq n \cdot m$. The original approach of A.~Barvinok can guarantee only $\|x\|_1 = O\bigl((n \cdot m)^n\bigr)$; 2) The problem is NP-hard with respect to any norm $\|\cdot\|_p$, for $p \in \bigl(R_{\geq 1} \cup \{\infty\}\bigr)$. 3) As an application, we show that the problem to count integer points in a polytope $P = \{x \in R^n \colon A x \leq b\}$, for given $A \in Z^{m \times n}$ and $b \in Q^m$, can be solved by an algorithm with $O\bigl(\nu^2 \cdot n^3 \cdot \Delta^3 \bigr)$ operations, where $\nu$ is the maximum size of a normal fan triangulation of $P$, and $\Delta$ is the maximum value of rank-order subdeterminants of $A$. It refines the previous state-of-the-art $O\bigl(\nu^2 \cdot n^4 \cdot \Delta^3\bigr)$-time algorithm.

Abstract:Let X be an n -element point set in the k -dimensional unit cube where . According to an old result of Bollobás and Meir (Oper Res Lett 11:19–21, 1992) , there exists a cycle (tour) through the n points, such that , where is the Euclidean distance between x and y , and is an absolute constant that depends only on k , where . From the other direction, for every and , there exist n points in , such that their shortest tour satisfies . For the plane, the best constant is and this is the only exact value known. Bollobás and Meir showed that one can take for every and conjectured that the best constant is , for every . Here we significantly improve the upper bound and show that one can take or . Our bounds are constructive. We also show that , which disproves the conjecture for . Connections to matching problems, power assignment problems, related problems, including algorithms, are discussed in this context. A slightly revised version of the Bollobás–Meir conjecture is proposed.

Irrational Guards are Sometimes Needed

Abstract:In this paper we study the art gallery problem, which is one of the fundamental problems in computational geometry. The objective is to place a minimum number of guards inside a simple polygon such that the guards together can see the whole polygon. We say that a guard at position $x$ sees a point $y$ if the line segment $xy$ is fully contained in the polygon. Despite an extensive study of the art gallery problem, it remained an open question whether there are polygons given by integer coordinates that require guard positions with irrational coordinates in any optimal solution. We give a positive answer to this question by constructing a monotone polygon with integer coordinates that can be guarded by three guards only when we allow to place the guards at points with irrational coordinates. Otherwise, four guards are needed. By extending this example, we show that for every $n$, there is polygon which can be guarded by $3n$ guards with irrational coordinates but need $4n$ guards if the coordinates have to be rational. Subsequently, we show that there are rectilinear polygons given by integer coordinates that require guards with irrational coordinates in any optimal solution.

Irreducible components of sets of points in the plane that satisfy distance conditions

Abstract:For a given graph whose edges are labeled with general real numbers, we consider the set of functions from the vertex set into the Euclidean plane such that the distance between the images of neighbouring vertices is equal to the corresponding edge label. This set of functions can be expressed as the zero set of quadratic polynomials and our main result characterizes the number of complex irreducible components of this zero set in terms of combinatorial properties of the graph. In case the complex components are three-dimensional, then the graph is minimally rigid and the component number is a well-known invariant from rigidity theory. If the components are four-dimensional, then they correspond to one-dimensional coupler curves of flexible planar mechanisms. As an application, we characterize the degree of irreducible components of such coupler curves combinatorially.

Efficiently stabbing convex polygons and variants of the Hadwiger-Debrunner $(p, q)$-theorem

Abstract:Hadwiger and Debrunner showed that for families of convex sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with the property that among any $p$ of them some $q$ have a common point, the whole family can be stabbed with $p-q+1$ points if $p \geq q \geq d+1$ and $(d-1)p < d(q-1)$. This generalizes a classical result by Helly. We show how such a stabbing set can be computed for a family of convex polygons in the plane with a total of $n$ vertices in $O((p-q+1)n^{4/3}\log^{8} n(\log\log n)^{1/3} + np^2)$ expected time. For polyhedra in $\mathbb{R}^3$, we get an algorithm running in $O((p-q+1)n^{5/2}\log^{10} n(\log\log n)^{1/6} + np^3)$ expected time. We also investigate other conditions on convex polygons for which our algorithm can find a fixed number of points stabbing them. Finally, we show that analogous results of the Hadwiger and Debrunner $(p,q)$-theorem hold in other settings, such as convex sets in $\mathbb{R}^d\times\mathbb{Z}^k$ or abstract convex geometries.

Abstract:For any positive definite rational quadratic form $q$ of $n$ variables let $G(\mathbb{Q}^n, q)$ denote the graph with vertices $\mathbb{Q}^n$ and $x, y \in \mathbb{Q}^n$ connected iff $q(x - y) = 1$. This notion generalises standard Euclidean distance graphs. In this article we study these graphs and show how to find the exact value of clique number of the $G(\mathbb{Q}^n, q)$. We also prove rational analogue of the Beckman--Quarles theorem that any unit-preserving mapping of $\mathbb{Q}^n$ is an isometry.

Classifying rational polygons with small denominator and few interior lattice points

Abstract:We present algorithms for classifying rational polygons with fixed denominator and number of interior lattice points. Our approach is to first describe maximal polygons and then compute all subpolygons, where we eliminate redundancy by a suitable normal form. Executing our classification, we obtained a dataset of several billions of polygons covering a wide variety of cases.

Polygonal equalities and $p$-negative type

Abstract:Nontrivial $p$-polygonal equalities impose certain conditions on the geometry of a metric space $(X,d)$ and so it is of interest to be able to identify the values of $p \in [0,\infty)$ for which such equalities exist. Following work of Li and Weston, Kelleher, Miller, Osborn and Weston established that if a metric space $(X,d)$ is of $p$-negative type, then $(X,d)$ admits no nontrivial $p$-polygonal equalities if and only if it is of strict $p$-negative type. In this note we remove the underlying premise of $p$-negative type from this theorem. As an application we show that the set of all $p$ for which a finite metric space $(X,d)$ admits a nontrivial $p$-polygonal equality is always a closed interval of the form $[\wp, \infty)$, where $\wp > 0$, or the empty set. It follows that for each $q \not= 2$, the Schatten $q$-class $\mathcal{C}_{q}$ admits a nontrivial $p$-polygonal equality for each $p > 0$. Other spaces with this same property include $C[0, 1]$ and $\ell_{q}^{(3)}$ for all $q > 2$.

Abstract:An equidistant polytope is a special equidistant set in the space $\mathbb{R}^n$ all of whose boundary points have equal distances from two finite systems of points. Since one of the finite systems of the given points is required to be in the interior of the convex hull of the other one we can speak about inner and outer focal points of the equidistant polytope. It is of type $(q, p)$, where $q$ is the number of the outer focal points and $p$ is the number of the inner focal points. The equidistancy is the generalization of convexity because a convex polytope can be given as an equidistant polytope of type $(q, 1)$, where $q\geq n+1$. In the paper we present some general results about the basic properties of the equidistant polytopes: convex components, graph representations, connectedness, correspondence to the Voronoi decomposition of the space etc. Especially, we are interested in equidistant polytopes of dimension $2$ (equidistant polygons). Equidistant polygons of type $(3,2)$ will be characterized in terms of a constructive (ruler-and-compass) process to recognize them. In general they are pentagons with exactly two concave angles such that the vertices, where the concave angles appear at, are joined by an inner diagonal related to the adjacent sides of the polygon in a special way via the three reflection theorem for concurrent lines. The last section is devoted to some special arrangements of the focal points to get the concave quadrangles as equidistant polygons of type $(3,2)$.

Abstract:In this paper we use an elementary approach by using numerical semigroups (specifically, those with two generators) to give a formula for the number of integral points inside a right-angled triangle with rational vertices. This is the basic case for computing the number of integral points inside a rational (not necessarily convex) polygon.

Abstract:We develop a new approach to address some classical questions concerning the size and structure of integer distance sets. Our main result is that any integer distance set in the Euclidean plane has all but a very small number of points lying on a single line or circle. From this, we deduce a near-optimal lower bound on the diameter of any non-collinear integer distance set of size $n$ and a strong upper bound on the size of any integer distance set in $[-N,N]^2$ with no three points on a line and no four points on a circle.

Abstract:Let be a finite set of integer points in , which we assume has many symmetries, and let be a fixed point. We calculate the distances from P to the points in and compare the results. In some of the most common cases, we find that they lead to unexpected conclusions if the dimension is sufficiently large. For example, if is the set of vertices of a hypercube in and P is any point inside, then almost all triangles PAB with are almost equilateral. Or, if P is close to the center of the cube, then almost all triangles PAB with and B anywhere in the hypercube are almost right triangles.

Sometimes Two Irrational Guards are Needed

Abstract:In the art gallery problem, we are given a closed polygon $P$, with rational coordinates and an integer $k$. We are asked whether it is possible to find a set (of guards) $G$ of size $k$ such that any point $p\in P$ is seen by a point in $G$. We say two points $p$, $q$ see each other if the line segment $pq$ is contained inside $P$. It was shown by Abrahamsen, Adamaszek, and Miltzow that there is a polygon that can be guarded with three guards, but requires four guards if the guards are required to have rational coordinates. In other words, an optimal solution of size three might need to be irrational. We show that an optimal solution of size two might need to be irrational. Note that it is well-known that any polygon that can be guarded with one guard has an optimal guard placement with rational coordinates. Hence, our work closes the gap on when irrational guards are possible to occur.

Towards Space Efficient Two-Point Shortest Path Queries in a Polygonal Domain

Abstract:We devise a data structure that can answer shortest path queries for two query points in a polygonal domain $P$ on $n$ vertices. For any $\varepsilon > 0$, the space complexity of the data structure is $O(n^{10+\varepsilon })$ and queries can be answered in $O(\log n)$ time. Alternatively, we can achieve a space complexity of $O(n^{9+\varepsilon })$ by relaxing the query time to $O(\log^2 n)$. This is the first improvement upon a conference paper by Chiang and Mitchell from 1999. They present a data structure with $O(n^{11})$ space complexity and $O(\log n)$ query time. Our main result can be extended to include a space-time trade-off. Specifically, we devise data structures with $O(n^{9+\varepsilon}/\hspace{1pt} \ell^{4 + O(\varepsilon )})$ space complexity and $O(\ell \log^2 n )$ query time, for any integer $1 \leq \ell \leq n$. Furthermore, we present improved data structures with $O(\log n)$ query time for the special case where we restrict one (or both) of the query points to lie on the boundary of $P$. When one of the query points is restricted to lie on the boundary, and the other query point is unrestricted, the space complexity becomes $O(n^{6+\varepsilon})$. When both query points are on the boundary, the space complexity is decreased further to $O(n^{4+\varepsilon })$, thereby improving an earlier result of Bae and Okamoto.

Abstract:Almost 50 years ago Erdős and Purdy asked the following question: Given n points in the plane, how many triangles can be approximate congruent to equilateral triangles? They pointed out that by dividing the points evenly into three small clusters built around the three vertices of a fixed equilateral triangle, one gets at least such approximate copies. In this paper we provide a matching upper bound and thereby answer their question. More generally, for every triangle T we determine the maximum number of approximate congruent triangles to T in a point set of size n . Parts of our proof are based on hypergraph Turán theory: for each point set in the plane and a triangle T , we construct a 3-uniform hypergraph , which contains no hypergraph as a subgraph from a family of forbidden hypergraphs . Our upper bound on the number of edges of will determine the maximum number of triangles that are approximate congruent to T .
