Abstract:Let $X$ be any subanalytic compact pseudomanifold. We show a De Rham theorem for $L^\infty$ forms. We prove that the cohomology of $L^\infty$ forms is isomorphic to intersection cohomology in the maximal perversity.

Abstract:Given a bounded subanalytic submanifold of $\mathbb{R}^n$, possibly admitting singularities within its closure, we study the cohomology of $L^p$ differential forms having an $L^p$ exterior differential (in the sense of currents) and satisfying Dirichlet or Neumann condition. We show an $L^p$ Hodge decomposition theorem, an $L^p$ de Rham theorem, as well as a Lefschetz duality theorem between $L^p$ and $L^{p'}$ forms (with $\frac{1}{p}+\frac{1}{p'}=1$) in the case where $p$ is large or close to $1$. This is achieved by proving that de Rham's pairing between complementary $L^p$ differential forms induces a pairing between cohomology classes which is nondegenerate (for such $p$). The main difficulty to carry it out is to show the density (in Sobolev spaces of differential forms) of forms that vanish near some singularities and are smooth up to the closure of the underlying manifold in the case $p$ large (Theorem 4.1). This result, which is of independent interest, also makes it possible to give a trace theorem that leads us to some explicit characterizations of Dirichlet and Neumann conditions in terms of traces and residues.

Abstract:Let $(M,g)$ be an incomplete Riemannian manifold of finite volume and let $2\leq p<\infty$. In the first part of this paper we prove that under certain assumptions the inclusion of the space of $L^p$-differential forms into that of $L^2$-differential forms gives rise to an injective/surjective map between the corresponding $L^p$ and $L^2$ cohomology groups. Then in the second part we provide various applications of these results to the curvature and the intersection cohomology of compact Thom-Mather stratified pseudomanifolds and complex projective varieties with only isolated singularities.

Abstract:We construct the $L_\infty$ structure on symplectic cohomology of a Liouville domain, together with an enhancement of the closed--open map to an $L_\infty$ homomorphism from symplectic cochains to Hochschild cochains on the wrapped Fukaya category. Features of our construction are that it respects a modified action filtration (in contrast to Pomerleano--Seidel's construction); it uses a compact telescope model (in contrast to Abouzaid--Groman--Varolgunes' construction); and it is adapted to the purposes of our follow-up work where we construct Maurer--Cartan elements in symplectic cochains which are associated to a normal-crossings compactification of the Liouville domain.

Abstract:A homotopical treatment of intersection cohomology recently developed by Chataur-Saralegui-Tanré associates a "perverse algebraic model" to every topological pseudomanifold, extending Sullivan's presentation of rational homotopy to intersection cohomology. In this context, there is a notion of "intersection-formality", measuring the vanishing of Massey products in intersection cohomology. In the present paper, we study the perverse algebraic model of complex projective varieties with isolated singularities. We endow such invariant with natural mixed Hodge structures. This allows us to prove some intersection-formality results for large families of complex projective varieties, such as isolated surface singularities and varieties of arbitrary dimension with ordinary isolated singularities.

Simplicial intersection homology revisited

Abstract:Intersection homology is defined for simplicial, singular and PL chains and it is well known that the three versions are isomorphic for a full filtered simplicial complex. In the literature, the isomorphism, between the singular and the simplicial situations of intersection homology, uses the PL case as an intermediate. Here we show directly that the canonical map between the simplicial and the singular intersection chains complexes is a quasi-isomorphism. This is similar to the classical proof for simplicial complexes, with an argument based on the concept of residual complex and not on skeletons. This parallel between simplicial and singular approaches is also extended to the intersection blown-up cohomology that we introduced in a previous work. In the case of an orientable pseudomanifold, this cohomology owns a Poincaré isomorphism with the intersection homology, for any coefficient ring, thanks to a cap product with a fundamental class. So, the blown-up intersection cohomology of a pseudomanifold can be computed from a triangulation. Finally, we introduce a blown-up intersection cohomology for PL spaces and prove that it is isomorphic to the singular one.

Abstract:We develop a generalization to non-Witt spaces of the intersection homology theory of Goresky-MacPherson. The second author has described the self-dual sheaves compatible with intersection homology, and the other authors have described a generalization of Cheeger's L2 de Rham cohomology. In this paper we extend both of these cohomologies by describing all sheaf complexes in the derived category of constructible sheaves that are compatible with middle perversity intersection cohomology, though not necessarily self-dual. On Thom-Mather stratified spaces this refined intersection cohomology theory coincides with the analytic de Rham theory.

Abstract:The study of differential forms that are closed but not exact reveals important information about the global topology of a manifold, encoded in the de Rham cohomology groups $H^k(M)$, named after Georges de Rham (1903-1990). This expository paper provides an explanation and exploration of de Rham cohomology and its equivalence to singular cohomology. We present an intuitive introduction to de Rham cohomology and discuss four associated computational tools: the Mayer-Vietoris theorem, homotopy invariance, Poincaré duality, and the Künneth formula. We conclude with a statement and proof of de Rham's theorem, which asserts that de Rham cohomology is equivalent to singular cohomology.

Abstract:Communications in Contemporary Mathematics, Ahead of Print. We construct an extension of the classical de Rham theory on spaces with isolated singularities, that we call intersection de Rham theory. The construction is based on the definition of some closed extension of the exterior differentiation operator on (distributional) forms, based on the introduction of some boundary conditions at the singular point. We prove that the cohomology of the associated Hilbert complex, that we call intersection de Rham complex, is naturally isomorphic to the combinatorial intersection cohomology of Goresky and MacPherson.

Abstract:We give a description of the cohomology groups of the structure sheaf on smooth compactifications $\overline{X}(w)$ of Deligne--Lusztig varieties $X(w)$ for ${\rm GL}_n$, for all elements $w$ in the Weyl group. As a consequence, we obtain the ${\rm mod}\ p^m$ and integral $p$-adic étale cohomology of $\overline{X}(w)$. Moreover, using our result for $\overline{X}(w)$ and a spectral sequence associated to a stratification of $\overline{X}(w)$, we deduce the ${\rm mod}\ p^m$ and integral $p$-adic étale cohomology with compact support of $X(w)$. In our proof of the main theorem, in addition to considering the Demazure--Hansen smooth compactifications of $X(w)$, we show that a similar class of constructions provide smooth compactifications of $X(w)$ in the case of ${\rm GL}_n$. Furthermore, we show in the appendix that the Zariski closure of $X(w)$, for any connected reductive group $G$ and any $w$, has pseudo-rational singularities.

Abstract:We revisit Gersten's $\ell^\infty$-cohomology of groups and spaces, removing the finiteness assumptions required by the original definition while retaining its geometric nature. Mirroring the corresponding results in bounded cohomology, we provide a characterization of amenable groups using $\ell^\infty$-cohomology, and generalize Mineyev's characterization of hyperbolic groups via $\ell^\infty$-cohomology to the relative setting. We then describe how $\ell^\infty$-cohomology is related to isoperimetric inequalities. We also consider some algorithmic problems concerning $\ell^\infty$-cohomology and show that they are undecidable. In an appendix, we prove a version of the de Rham's theorem in the context of $\ell^\infty$-cohomology.

Abstract:Holomorphic Poisson structures arise naturally in the realm of generalized geometry. A holomorphic Poisson structure induces a deformation of the complex structure in a generalized sense, whose cohomology is obtained by twisting the Dolbeault @-operator by the holomorphic Poisson bivector field. Therefore, the cohomology space naturally appears as the limit of a spectral sequence of a double complex. The first sheet of this spectral sequence is simply the Dolbeault cohomology with coefficients in the exterior algebra of the holomorphic tangent bundle. We identify various necessary conditions on compact complex manifolds on which this spectral sequence degenerates on the level of the second sheet. The manifolds to our concern include all compact complex surfaces, Kähler manifolds, and nilmanifolds with abelian complex structures or parallelizable complex structures.

Abstract:Given a compact complex manifold, we develop Hodge theory for the elliptic complex of differential forms defined by Bigolin in 1969 and recently referred as the Schweitzer complex. We exhibits several $L^2$ orthogonal decompositions of spaces of forms and prove a Hodge decomposition for harmonic forms on compact Kähler manifolds. Then we compute the cohomology of this complex on the small deformations of the complex structure of the Iwasawa manifold, showing that this cohomology is as powerful as Aeppli and Bott-Chern cohomology, in order to distinguish classes of complex structures. Finally, we partially extend the definition of this complex on almost complex manifolds, providing a new cohomological invariant on 1-forms which is finite dimensional when the manifold is compact.

Abstract:We establish a positive characteristic analogue of intersection cohomology theory for variations of Hodge structure. It includes: a) the de Rham-Higgs comparison theorem for the intersection de Rham complex; b) the E_1-degeneration theorem for the intersection de Rham complex of a periodic de Rham bundle; c) the Kodaira-Saito vanishing theorem for the intersection cohomology groups of a periodic Higgs bundle. These results generalize the decomposition theorem of Deligne-Illusie and the de Rham-Higgs theorem of Ogus-Vologodsky, the E_1-degneration theorem of Deligne-Illusie, Illusie, Faltings and the Kodaira-Saito vanishing theorem of Arapura. As an application, we give an algebraic proof of the E_1-degeneration theorem due to Cattani-Kaplan-Schmid and Kashiwara-Kawai, and the vanishing theorem of Saito for VHSs of geometric origin.

Abstract:We initiate the investigation of critical exponents (in degree equal to the rank) for the vanishing of L^p-cohomology of higher rank Lie groups and related manifolds. We deal with the rank 2 case and exhibit such phenomena for SL$_3$(R) and for a family of 5-dimensional solvable Lie groups. This leads us to exhibit a continuum of quasi-isometry classes of rank 2 solvable Lie groups of non-positive curvature. We provide a detailed description of the $L^p$-cohomology of the real and complex hyperbolic spaces, to be combined with a spectral sequence argument for our higher-rank results.

Abstract:Abstract By a theorem of Banagl–Chriestenson, intersection spaces of depth one pseudomanifolds exhibit generalized Poincaré duality of Betti numbers, provided that certain characteristic classes of the link bundles vanish. In this paper, we show that the middle-perversity intersection space of a depth one Witt space can be completed to a rational Poincaré duality space by means of a single cell attachment, provided that a certain rational Hurewicz homomorphism associated to the link bundles is surjective. Our approach continues previous work of Klimczak covering the case of isolated singularities with simply connected links. For every singular stratum, we show that our condition on the rational Hurewicz homomorphism implies that the Banagl–Chriestenson characteristic classes of the link bundle vanish. Moreover, using Sullivan minimal models, we show that the converse implication holds at least in the case that twice the dimension of the singular stratum is bounded by the dimension of the link. As an application, we compare the signature of our rational Poincaré duality space to the Goresky–MacPherson intersection homology signature of the given Witt space. We discuss our results for a class of Witt spaces having circles as their singular strata.

Abstract:Under hypotheses required for the Taylor-Wiles method, we prove for forms of $U(3)$ which are compact at infinity that the lattice structure on upper alcove algebraic vectors or on principal series types given by the $\lambda$-isotypic part of completed cohomology is a local invariant of the Galois representation attached to $\lambda$ when this Galois representation is residually irreducible locally at places dividing $p$. As a crucial input, we establish corresponding mod $p$ multiplicity one results. Our main innovation is the combination of integral Hecke theory and the Taylor--Wiles method.

Local Lagrangian Floer Homology of Quasi-Minimally Degenerate Intersections

Abstract:We define a broad class of local Lagrangian intersections which we call quasi-minimally degenerate (QMD) before developing techniques for studying their local Floer homology. In some cases, one may think of such intersections as modeled on minimally degenerate functions as defined by Kirwan. One major result of this paper is: if $L_0,L_1$ are two Lagrangian submanifolds whose intersection decomposes into QMD sets, there is a spectral sequence converging to their Floer homology $HF_*(L_0,L_1)$ whose $E^1$ page is obtained from local data given by the QMD pieces. The $E^1$ terms are the singular homologies of submanifolds with boundary that come from perturbations of the QMD sets. We then give some applications of these techniques towards studying affine varieties, reproducing some prior results using our more general framework.
