Abstract:We introduce the concept of coarse groupoid cohomology for a groupoid equipped with a coarse structure.We construct a Connes-Chern character map from the coarse groupoid cohomology to the cyclic cohomology of the smooth coarse Roe algebra of the groupoid.As an example,we construct a cyclic coarse cocycle on the holonomy groupoid associated to a flat principal G-bundle for a Lie group G.

Abstract:We compute the mod-2 cohomology rings for three-dimensional (3D) space groups and establish a connection between them and the lattice structure of crystals with space group symmetry. This connection allows us to obtain a complete set of Lieb-Schultz-Mattis constraints, specifying the conditions under which a unique, symmetric, gapped ground state cannot exist in 3D lattice magnets. We associate each of these constraints with an element in the third mod-2 cohomology of the space group, when the internal symmetry acts on-site and its projective representations are classified by powers of $\mathbb{Z}_2$. We demonstrate the relevance of our results to the study of $\mathrm{U}(1)$ quantum spin liquids on the 3D pyrochlore lattice. We determine, through anomaly matching, the symmetry fractionalization patterns of both electric and magnetic charges, extending previous results from projective symmetry group classifications.

Abstract:A limit group is the limit of a sequence of conjugates of the diagonal Cartan subgroup, C, of SL(3,R). We show C has 5 possible limit groups, up to conjugacy. Each limit group is determined by an equivalence class of nonstandard triangle, and we give a criterion for a sequence of conjugates of C to converge to each of the 5 limit groups.

Abstract:We show that for many right-angled Artin and Coxeter groups, all cocompact cubulations coarsely look the same: they induce the same coarse median structure on the group. These are the first examples of non-hyperbolic groups with this property. For all graph products of finite groups and for Coxeter groups with no irreducible affine parabolic subgroups of rank $\geq 3$, we show that all automorphism preserve the coarse median structure induced, respectively, by the Davis complex and the Niblo-Reeves cubulation. As a consequence, automorphisms of these groups have nice fixed subgroups and satisfy Nielsen realisation.

On cocliques in commutative Schurian association schemes of the symmetric group

Abstract:Given the symmetric group $G = \operatorname{Sym}(n)$ and a multiplicity-free subgroup $H\leq G$, the orbitals of the action of $G$ on $G/H$ by left multiplication induce a commutative association scheme. The irreducible constituents of the permutation character of $G$ acting on $G/H$ are indexed by partitions of $n$ and if $\lambda \vdash n$ is the second largest partition in dominance ordering among these, then the Young subgroup $\operatorname{Sym}(\lambda)$ admits two orbits in its action on $G/H$, which are $\mathcal{S}_\lambda$ and its complement. In their monograph [Erdős-Ko-Rado theorems: Algebraic Approaches. {\it Cambridge University Press}, 2016] (Problem~16.13.1), Godsil and Meagher asked whether $\mathcal{S}_\lambda$ is a coclique of a graph in the commutative association scheme arising from the action of $G$ on $G/H$. If such a graph exists, then they also asked whether its smallest eigenvalue is afforded by the $\lambda$-module. In this paper, we initiate the study of this question by taking $\lambda = [n-1,1]$. We show that the answer to this question is affirmative for the pair of groups $\left(G,H\right)$, where $G = \operatorname{Sym}(2k+1)$ and $H = \operatorname{Sym}(2) \wr \operatorname{Sym}(k)$, or $G = \operatorname{Sym}(n)$ and $H$ is one of $\operatorname{Alt}(k) \times \operatorname{Sym}(n-k),\ \operatorname{Alt}(k) \times \operatorname{Alt}(n-k)$, or $\left(\operatorname{Alt}(k)\times \operatorname{Alt}(n-k)\right) \cap \operatorname{Alt}(n)$. For the pair $(G,H) = \left(\operatorname{Sym}(2k),\operatorname{Sym}(k)\wr \operatorname{Sym}(2)\right)$, we also prove that the answer to this question of Godsil and Meagher is negative.

The geometry of conjugation in affine Coxeter groups

Abstract:We develop new and precise geometric descriptions of the conjugacy class $[x]$ and coconjugation set $\operatorname{C}(x,x') = \{ y \in \overline{W} \mid yxy^{-1} = x' \}$ for all elements $x,x'$ of any affine Coxeter group $\overline{W}$. The centralizer of $x$ in $\overline{W}$ is the special case $\operatorname{C}(x,x)$. The key structure in our description of the conjugacy class $[x]$ is the mod-set ${Mod}_{\overline{W}}(w) = (w-\operatorname{I})R^\vee$, where~$w$ is the finite part of $x$ and $R^\vee$ is the coroot lattice. The coconjugation set $\operatorname{C}(x,x')$ is then described by ${Mod}_{\overline{W}}(w')$ together with the fix-set of $w'$, where $w'$ is the finite part of $x'$. For any element $w$ of the associated finite Weyl group $W$, the mod-set of $w$ is contained in the classical move-set ${Mov}(w) = \operatorname{Im}(w - \operatorname{I})$. We prove that the rank of ${Mod}_{\overline{W}}(w)$ equals the dimension of ${Mov}(w)$, and then further investigate type-by-type the surprisingly subtle structure of the $\mathbb{Z}$-module ${Mod}_\overline{W}(w)$. As corollaries, we determine exactly when ${Mod}_{\overline{W}}(w) = {Mov}(w) \cap R^\vee$, in which case our closed-form descriptions of conjugacy classes and coconjugation sets are as simple as possible.

The Conjugacy Problem for $Out(F_3)$

Abstract:We present a solution to the Conjugacy Problem in the group of outer-automorphisms of $F_3$, a free group of rank 3. We distinguish according to several computable invariants, such as irreducibility, subgroups of polynomial growth, and subgroups carrying the attracting lamination. We establish, by considerations on train tracks, that the conjugacy problem is decidable for the outer-automorphisms of $F_3$ that preserve a given rank 2 free factor. Then we establish, by consideration on mapping tori, that it is decidable for outer-automorphisms of $F_3$ whose maximal polynomial growth subgroups are cyclic. This covers all the cases left by the state of the art.

A family of $2$-groups and an associated family of semisymmetric, locally $2$-arc-transitive graphs

Abstract:A mixed dihedral group is a group $H$ with two disjoint subgroups $X$ and $Y$, each elementary abelian of order $2^n$, such that $H$ is generated by $X\cup Y$, and $H/H'\cong X\times Y$. In this paper, for each $n\geq 2$, we construct a mixed dihedral $2$-group $H$ of nilpotency class $3$ and order $2^a$ where $a=(n^3+n^2+4n)/2$, and a corresponding graph $\Sigma$, which is the clique graph of a Cayley graph of $H$. We prove that $\Sigma$ is semisymmetric, that is, ${\rm Aut}(\Sigma)$ acts transitively on the edges, but intransitively on the vertices, of $\Sigma$. These graphs are the first known semisymmetric graphs constructed from groups that are not $2$-generated (indeed $H$ requires $2n$ generators). Additionally, we prove that $\Sigma$ is locally $2$-arc-transitive, and is a normal cover of the `basic' locally $2$-arc-transitive graph ${\rm K}_{2^n,2^n}$. As such, the construction of this family of graphs contributes to the investigation of normal covers of prime-power order of basic locally $2$-arc-transitive graphs -- the `local' analogue of a question posed by C.~H.~Li.

Abstract:For most (and possibly all) non-associative finite simple Moufang loops, three generators of order 3 can be chosen so that each two of them generate a group isomorphic to $(3, 3 | 3, p)$. The subgroup structure of $(3, 3 | 3, p)$ depends on the solvability of a certain quadratic congruence, and it is described here in terms of generators.

Abstract:Using the results of J. Arthur on the representation theory of classical groups with additional work by Colette Moeglin and its relation with representations of affine Hecke algebras established by the author, we show that the category of smooth complex representations of a split $p$-adic classical group and its pure inner forms is naturally decomposed into subcategories which are equivalent to a tensor product of categories of unipotent representations of classical groups (in the sense of G. Lusztig). A statement of this kind had been conjecture by G. Lusztig. All classical groups (general linear, orthogonal, symplectic and unitary groups) appear in this context. We get also parameterizations of representations of affine Hecke algebras, which seem not all to be in the literature yet. All this should also shed some light on what is known as the stable Bernstein center.

Coarse obstructions to cocompact cubulation

Abstract:We provide geometric methods to both lower- and upper-bound the large-scale dimension of CAT(0) cube complexes quasiisometric to a given group $G$. When these bounds overlap, this provides obstructions to $G$ being cocompactly cubulated. More strongly, it prevents $G$ from being a coarse median space. As applications, we show that many free-by-cyclic groups cannot be cocompactly cubulated, and that any tubular group with a coarse median is virtually compact special.

Abstract:Motivated by well known results in low-dimensional topology, we introduce and study a topology on the set CO(G) of all left-invariant circular orders on a fixed countable and discrete group G. CO(G) contains as a closed subspace LO(G), the space of all left-invariant linear orders of G, as first topologized by Sikora. We use the compactness of these spaces to show the sets of non-linearly and non-circularly orderable finitely presented groups are recursively enumerable. We describe the action of Aut(G) on CO(G) and relate it to results of Koberda regarding the action on LO(G). We then study two families of circularly orderable groups: finitely generated abelian groups, and free products of circularly orderable groups. For finitely generated abelian groups A, we use a classification of elements of CO(A) to describe the homeomorphism type of the space CO(A), and to show that Aut(A) acts faithfully on the subspace of circular orders which are not linear. We define and characterize Archimedean circular orders, in analogy with linear Archimedean orders. We describe explicit examples of circular orders on free products of circularly orderable groups, and prove a result about the abundance of orders on free products. Whenever possible, we prove and interpret our results from a dynamical perspective.

Abstract:In this article, we compute the mod 2 representarion of the symmetric group of order 2 over the singular cohomology groups of orderd 2-configuration space $C_{2}(T^{d})$ of the $d$-torus $T^{d}$ for $d\geq 1$. As applications of the computation, we determine the Stiefel-Whitney height of $C_{2}(T^{d})$ for any $d$, and determine $\mathbb{F}_{2}[{\Sigma}_{2}]$-module structure of the cohomology groups of the unordered 2-configuration space of the $d$-torus for $d=2,3$ using the Serre spectral sequence.

Abstract:This work applies the modular reduction technique to the Coxeter group of rank 4 having a star diagram with labels 5, 3, and $k = 3, 4, 5, \text{ or } 6$. As moduli, we use the primes in the quadratic integer ring $\mathbb{Z}[\tau]$, where $\tau = \frac{1 + \sqrt{5}}{2}$, the golden ratio. We prove that each reduced group is a C-group, regardless of the prime used in the reduction. We also classify each reduced group as a reflection group over a finite field, whenever applicable.

A correspondence between categories of comodules and flat connections is established. A generalisation of the Cuntz-Quillen theorem relating existence of connections in a module to projectivity of this module is proven.

Abstract:A Cayley graph Cay$(G;S)$ has the CI (Cayley Isomorphism) property if for every isomorphic graph Cay$(G;T)$, there is a group automorphism $\alpha$ of $G$ such that $S^\alpha=T$. The DCI (Directed Cayley Isomorphism) property is defined analogously on digraphs. A group $G$ is a CI-group if every Cayley graph on $G$ has the CI property, and is a DCI-group if every Cayley digraph on $G$ has the DCI property. Since a graph is a special type of digraph, this means that every DCI-group is a CI-group, and if a group is not a CI-group then it is not a DCI-group, but there are well-known examples of groups that are CI-groups but not DCI-groups. In 2009, Spiga showed that $\mathbb Z_3^8$ is not a DCI-group, by producing a digraph that does not have the DCI property. He also showed that $\mathbb Z_3^5$ is a DCI-group (and therefore also a CI-group). Until recently the question of whether there are elementary abelian $3$-groups that are not CI-groups remained open. In a recent preprint with Dave Witte Morris, we showed that $\mathbb Z_3^{10}$ is not a CI-group. In this paper we show that with slight modifications, the underlying undirected graph of order $3^8$ described by Spiga is does not have the CI property, so $\mathbb Z_3^8$ is not a CI-group.

Abstract:The conjugation representation of a finite group $G$ is the complex permutation module defined by the action of $G$ on itself by conjugation. Addressing a problem raised by Hain motivated by the study of a Hecke action on iterated Shimura integrals, Tiep proved that for $G=\operatorname{SL}_{2}(\mathbb{Z}/p^{r})$, where $r\geq1$ and $p\geq5$ is a prime, any irreducible representation of $G$ that is trivial on the centre of $G$ is contained in the conjugation representation. Moreover, Tiep asked whether this can be generalised to $p=2$ or $3$. We answer the Hain--Tiep question in the affirmative and also prove analogous statements for $\operatorname{SL}_{2}$ and $\operatorname{GL}_{2}$ over any finite local principal ideal ring with residue field of odd characteristic.
