Abstract:We introduce ideas from geometric group theory related to boundaries of groups. This is a mostly expository paper. We consider the visual boundary of a free abelian group, and show that it is an uncountable set with the trivial topology.

Abstract:We generalize Bestvina's notion of a $\mathcal{Z}$-boundary for a group to that of a "coarse $\mathcal{Z}$-boundary." We show that established theorems about $\mathcal{Z}$-boundaries carry over nicely to the more general theory, and that some wished-for properties of $\mathcal{Z}$-boundaries become theorems when applied to coarse $\mathcal{Z}$-boundaries. Most notably, the property of admitting a coarse $\mathcal{Z}$-boundary is a pure quasi-isometry invariant. In the process, we streamline both new and existing definitions by introducing the notion of a "model $\mathcal{Z}$-geometry." In accordance with the existing theory, we also develop an equivariant version of the above -- that of a "coarse $E\mathcal{Z}$-boundary."

Abstract:We elaborate an algebraic framework for describing internal topological symmetries of gapped boundaries of (2+1)D topological orders. We present a categorical obstruction to the coherence of bulk group symmetry and boundary symmetries in terms of liftings of categorical actions on the bulk theory to a certain 2-group of boundary symmetries.

Abstract:We extend several techniques and theorems from geometric group theory so that they apply to geometric actions on arbitrary proper metric ARs (absolute retracts). A second way that we generalize earlier results is by eliminating freeness requirements often placed on the group actions. In doing so, we allow for groups with torsion. The main theorems are new in that they generalize results found in the literature, but a significant aim is expository. Toward that end, brief but reasonably comprehensive introductions to the theories of ANRs (absolute neighborhood retracts) and Z-sets are included, as well as a much shorter short introduction to shape theory. Here is a sampling of the theorems proved here. THEOREM. If quasi-isometric groups G and H act geometrically on proper metric ARs X and Y , resp., then X is proper homotopy equivalent to Y. THEOREM. If quasi-isometric groups G and H act geometrically on proper metric ARs X and Y , resp., and Y can be compactified to a Z-structure for H, then the same boundary can be added to X to obtain a Z-structure for G. THEOREM. If quasi-isometric groups G and H admit Z-structures (X^, Z_1) and (Y^, Z_2) resp., then Z_1 and Z_2 are shape equivalent.

Abstract:Let $\gg$ be a simple, finite-dimensional complex Lie algebra, and let $V^k(\gg)$ denote the universal affine vertex algebra associated to $\gg$ at level $k$. The Cartan involution on $\gg$ lifts to an involution on $V^k(\gg)$, and we denote by $V^k(\gg)^{\mathbb{Z}_2}$ the orbifold, or fixed-point subalgebra, under this involution. Our main result is an explicit minimal strong finite generating set for $V^k(\gg)^{\mathbb{Z}_2}$ for generic values of $k$. In the case $\gg = \gs\gl_2$, we also determine the set of nongeneric values of $k$, where this set does not work.

Abstract:We study locally flat disks in $(\mathbb{C} P^2)^\circ:=(\mathbb{C} P^2)\setminus \mathring{B^4}$ with boundary a fixed knot $K$ and whose complement has fundamental group $\mathbb{Z}$. We show that up to topological isotopy rel. boundary, such disks necessarily arise by performing a positive crossing change on $K$ to an Alexander polynomial one knot and capping off with a $\mathbb{Z}$-disk in $D^4.$ Such a crossing change determines a loop in $S^3 \setminus K$ and we prove that the homology class of its lift to the infinite cyclic cover leads to a complete invariant of the disk. We prove that this determines a bijection between the set of rel. boundary topological isotopy classes of $\mathbb{Z}$-disks with boundary $K$ and a quotient of the set of unitary units of the ring $\mathbb{Z}[t^{\pm 1}]/(\Delta_K)$. Number-theoretic considerations allow us to deduce that a knot $K \subset S^3$ with quadratic Alexander polynomial bounds $0,1,2,4$, or infinitely many $\mathbb{Z}$-disks in $(\mathbb{C} P^2)^\circ$. This leads to the first examples of knots bounding infinitely many topologically distinct disks whose exteriors have the same fundamental group and equivariant intersection form. Finally we give several examples where these disks are realized smoothly.

Abstract:In this article, we prove a version of Martin and Skora's conjecture that convergence groups on the $2$-sphere are covered by Kleinian groups. Given a relatively hyperbolic group pair $(G,\mathcal{P})$ with planar boundary and no Sierpinski carpet or cut points in its boundary, and with $G$ one ended and virtually having no $2$-torsion, we show that $G$ is virtually Kleinian. We also give applications to various versions of the Cannon conjecture and to convergence groups acting on $S^2$.

On the Bowditch boundary of a free group with random cyclic peripheral groups

Abstract:The topology of the Bowditch boundary of a relatively hyperbolic group pair gives information about relative splittings of the group. It is therefore interesting to ask if there is generic behavior of this boundary. The purpose of this article is to show that in the case of a non-abelian free group with cyclic peripheral structure, there is not a generic case. This goal is accomplished by showing the minimal size of cut sets in the boundary increases as the lengths of the random words generating the peripheral structure go to infinity.

Abstract:We study anomalies of discrete internal global symmetry $G$ in two-dimensional rational conformal field theories based on twisted torus partition functions. The anomaly of $G$ can be seen from the noncommutativity of two symmetry lines inserted along the nontrivial cycles of two-torus and we propose a criterion to detect the anomaly, which agrees with the truncated modular $S$-matrix approach. The obstruction for orbifolding has been recently interpreted as a mixed anomaly between $G$ and large diffeomorphisms. We clarify the relations among anomaly-free conditions, orbifoldable conditions, and invariant boundary state condition, focusing on Wess-Zumino-Witten models.

Boundary algebras of the Kitaev Quantum Double model

Abstract:The recent article [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2307.12552" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2307.12552">arXiv:2307.12552</a>] gave local topological order (LTO) axioms for a quantum spin system, showed they held in Kitaev's Toric Code and in Levin-Wen string net models, and gave a bulk boundary correspondence to describe bulk excitations in terms of the boundary net of algebras. In this article, we prove the LTO axioms for Kitaev's Quantum Double model for a finite group $G$. We identify the boundary nets of algebras with fusion categorical nets associated to $(\mathsf{Hilb}(G),\mathbb{C}[G])$ or $(\mathsf{Rep}(G),\mathbb{C}^G)$ depending on whether the boundary cut is rough or smooth respectively. This allows us to make connections to work of Ogata on the type of the cone von Neumann algebras in the algebraic quantum field theory approach to topological superselection sectors. We show that the boundary algebras can also be calculated from a trivial $G$-symmetry protected topological phase ($G$-SPT), and that the gauging map preserves the boundary algebras. Finally, we compute the boundary algebras for the (3+1)D Quantum Double model associated to an abelian group.

Abstract:A $\mathcal{Z}$-structure on a group $G$ was introduced by Bestvina in order to extend the notion of a group boundary beyond the realm of CAT(0) and hyperbolic groups. A refinement of this notion, introduced by Farrell and Lafont, includes a $G$-equivariance requirement, and is known as an $\mathcal{EZ}$-structure. The general questions of which groups admit $\mathcal{Z}$- or $\mathcal{EZ}$-structures remain open. In this paper we add to the current knowledge by showing that all Baumslag-Solitar groups admit $\mathcal{EZ}$-structures and all generalized Baumslag-Solitar groups admit $\mathcal{Z}$-structures.

Abstract:Abstract. We show that a Kleinian surface group, or hyperbolic 3-manifold with a cusp-preserving homotopy-equivalence to a surface, has bounded geometry if and only if there is an upper bound on an associated collection of coefficients that depend only on its end invariants. Bounded geometry is a positive lower bound on the lengths of closed geodesics. When the surface is a once-punctured torus, the coefficients coincide with the continued fraction coefficients associated to the ending laminations.

Abstract:Motivated by the study of the large-scale geometry of topological groups, we investigate particular families of subsets of topological groups named group ideals. We compare different group ideals in the realm of locally compact groups. In particular, we show that a subset of a locally compact abelian group is relatively compact if and only if it is coarsely bounded. Using this result, we prove that an infinite-dimensional Banach space cannot be embedded into any product of locally compact groups.

Abstract:In all known examples of a CAT(0) group acting on CAT(0) spaces with non-homeomorphic CAT(0) visual boundaries, the visual boundaries are each not path-connected. In this paper, we show this does not have to be the case. In particular, for each n>0n>0 we provide examples of right-angled Artin groups which exhibit non-unique CAT(0) visual boundaries where all of the visual boundaries are nn-connected. We also prove a combination theorem for certain amalgams of CAT(0) groups to act on spaces whose visual boundaries are not path-connected. We apply this theorem to some right-angled Artin groups.

Convex co-compact groups with one dimensional boundary faces

Abstract:In this paper we consider convex co-compact subgroups of the projective linear group. We prove that such a group is relatively hyperbolic with respect to a collection of virtually Abelian subgroups of rank two if and only if each open face in the ideal boundary has dimension at most one. We also introduce the "coarse Hilbert dimension" of a subset of a convex set and use it to characterize when a naive convex co-compact subgroup is word hyperbolic or relatively hyperbolic with respect to a collection of virtually Abelian subgroups of rank two.

Metrics on Visual Boundaries of CAT(0) Spaces

Abstract:A famous open problem asks whether the asymptotic dimension of a CAT(0) group is necessarily finite. For hyperbolic groups, it is known that asymptotic dimension of the group is bounded above by the dimension of the boundary plus one, which is known to be finite. For CAT(0) groups, the latter quantity is also known to be finite, so one approach is to try proving a similar inequality. So far those efforts have failed. Motivated by these questions we work toward understanding the relationship between large scale dimension of CAT(0) groups and small scale dimension of the group's boundary by shifting attention to the linearly controlled dimension of the boundary. To do that, one must choose appropriate metrics for the boundaries. In this paper, we suggest two candidates and develop some basic properties. Under one choice, we show that linearly controlled dimension of the boundary remains finite; under another choice, we prove that macroscopic dimension of the group is bounded above by twice the linearly controlled dimension of the boundary plus one. Other useful results are established, some basic examples are analyzed, and a variety of open questions are posed.

Abstract:We study the geometry of compact geodesic spaces with trivial first Betti number admitting large finite groups of isometries. We show that if a finite group $G$ acts by isometries on a compact geodesic space $X$ whose first Betti number vanishes, then diam$(X) / $diam$(X / G ) \leq 4 \sqrt{ \vert G \vert }$. For a group $G$ and a finite symmetric generating set $S$, $P_k(\Gamma (G, S))$ denotes the 2-dimensional CW-complex whose 1-skeleton is the Cayley graph $\Gamma$ of $G$ with respect to $S$ and whose 2-cells are $m$-gons for $0 \leq m \leq k$, defined by the simple graph loops of length $m$ in $\Gamma$, up to cyclic permutations. Let $G$ be a finite abelian group with $\vert G \vert \geq 3$ and $S$ a symmetric set of generators for which $P_k(\Gamma (G,S))$ has trivial first Betti number. We show that the first nontrivial eigenvalue $-\lambda_1$ of the Laplacian on the Cayley graph satisfies $\lambda_1 \geq 2 - 2 \cos ( 2 \pi / k ) $. We also give an explicit upper bound on the diameter of the Cayley graph of $G$ with respect to $S$ of the form $O (k^2 \vert S \vert \log \vert G \vert )$. Related explicit bounds for the Cheeger constant and Kazhdan constant of the pair $(G,S)$ are also obtained.

Abstract:We study the boundary states of the archetypal three-dimensional topological order, i.e. the three-dimensional $\mathbb{Z}_2$ toric code. There are three distinct elementary types of boundary states that we will consider in this work. In the phase diagram that includes the three elementary boundaries there may exist a multi-critical point, which is captured by the so-called deconfined quantum critical point (DQCP) with an "easy-axis" anisotropy. Moreover, there is an emergent $\mathbb{Z}_{2,\text{d}}$ symmetry that swaps two of the boundary types, and it becomes part of the global symmetry of the DQCP. The emergent $\mathbb{Z}_{2,\text{d}}$ symmetry on the boundary is originated from a type of surface defect in the bulk. We further find a gapped boundary with a surface topological order that is invariant under the emergent symmetry.
