Abstract:In this paper we introduce a link between geometry of ordinary continued fractions and trajectories of points that moves according to the second Kepler law. We expand geometric interpretation of ordinary continued fractions to the case of continued fractions with arbitrary elements.

On the Bessel Solution of Kepler's Equation

Abstract:Since its introduction in 1650, Kepler's equation has never ceased to fascinate mathematicians, scientists, and engineers. Over the course of five centuries, a large number of different solution strategies have been devised and implemented. Among them, the one originally proposed by J. L. Lagrange and later by F. W. Bessel still continue to be a source of mathematical treasures. Here, the Bessel solution of the elliptic Kepler equation is explored from a new perspective offered by the theory of the Stieltjes series. In particular, it has been proven that a complex Kapteyn series obtained directly by the Bessel expansion is a Stieltjes series. This mathematical result, to the best of our knowledge, is a new integral representation of the KE solution. Some considerations on possible extensions of our results to more general classes of the Kapteyn series are also presented.

Effective Kerr geometry from loop quantum gravity

Abstract:We derive an effective Kerr metric from an effective Schwarzschild metric inspired by loop quantum gravity through the Newman-Janis algorithm. The resulting spacetime is free from the classical ring singularity and does not allow the existence of closed time-like curves, due to a lower radial bound in its domain inherited by the spherically symmetric seed metric. We give a possible interpretation to this lower bound by casting the metric in generalized Painlevé-Gullstrand coordinates. We analyze the horizon structure and the ergoregion pointing out the similarities and the differences with the classical Kerr spacetime. The study of the trajectory of the zero angular momentum observer allows to show two novel effects due purely to quantum gravity related to the frame dragging and the repulsive behaviour in the deep quantum region. We derive an effective separation Carter constant and the geodesic equations. Finally, we specialize the geodesic analysis to equatorial circular trajectories obtaining a modified third Kepler law and the equation defining the photon sphere.

Continuity of entropy for all $α$-deformations of an infinite class of continued fraction transformations

Abstract:We extend the results of our 2020 paper in the Annali della Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, Classe di Scienze. There, we associated to each of an infinite family of triangle Fuchsian groups a one-parameter family of continued fraction maps and showed that the matching (or, synchronization) intervals are of full measure. Here, we find planar extensions of each of the maps, and prove the continuity of the entropy function associated to each one-parameter family. We also introduce a notion of "first pointwise expansive power" of an eventually expansive interval map. We prove that for every map in one of our one-parameter families its first pointwise expansive power map has its natural extension given by the first return of the geodesic flow to a cross section in the unit tangent bundle of the hyperbolic orbifold uniformized by the corresponding group. We conjecture that this holds for all of our maps. We give numerical evidence for the conjecture.

Abstract:The sum of elliptic integrals simultaneously determines orbits in thr Kepler problem and the addition of divisors on elliptic curves. Periodic motion of a body in physical space is defined by symmetries, whereas periodic motion of divisors is defined by a fixed point on the curve. Algebra of the first integrals associated with symmetries is a well-known mathematical object, whereas algebra of the first integrals associated with coordinates of fixed points is unknown. In this paper, we discuss polynomial algebras of non-polynomial first integrals of superintegrable systems associated with elliptic curves.

A Historical Method Approach to Teaching Kepler's 2nd law

Abstract:Kepler's 2nd law, the law of the areas, is usually taught in passing, between the 1st and the 3rd laws, to be explained "later on" as a consequence of angular momentum conservation. The 1st and 3rd laws receive the bulk of attention; the 1st law because of the paradigm shift significance in overhauling the previous circular models with epicycles of both Ptolemy and Copernicus, the 3rd because of its convenience to the standard curriculum in having a simple mathematical statement that allows for quantitative homework assignments and exams. In this work I advance a method for teaching the 2nd law that combines the paradigm-shift significance of the 1st and the mathematical proclivity of the 3rd. The approach is rooted in the historical method, indeed, placed in its historical context, Kepler's 2nd is as revolutionary as the 1st: as the 1st law does away with the epicycle, the 2nd law does away with the equant. This way of teaching the 2nd law also formulates the "time=area" statement quantitatively, in the way of Kepler's equation, M = E - e sin E (relating mean anomaly M, eccentric anomaly E, and eccentricity e), where the left-hand side is time and the right-hand side is area. In doing so, it naturally paves the way to finishing the module with an active learning computational exercise, for instance, to calculate the timing and location of Mars' next opposition. This method is partially based on Kepler's original thought, and should thus best be applied to research-oriented students, such as junior and senior physics/astronomy undergraduates, or graduate students.

Abstract:The Kepler-Heisenberg problem is that of determining the motion of a planet around a sun in the sub-Riemannian Heisenberg group. The sub-Riemannian Hamiltonian provides the kinetic energy, and the gravitational potential is given by the fundamental solution to the sub-Laplacian. This system is known to admit closed orbits, which all lie within a fundamental integrable subsystem. Here, we develop a computer program which finds these closed orbits using Monte Carlo optimization with a shooting method, and applying a recently developed symplectic integrator for nonseparable Hamiltonians. Our main result is the discovery of a family of flower-like periodic orbits with previously unknown symmetry types. We encode these symmetry types as rational numbers and provide evidence that these periodic orbits densely populate a one-dimensional set of initial conditions parametrized by the orbit's angular momentum. We provide links to all code developed.

Abstract:Proceeding like Newton with a discrete time approach of motion and a geometrical representation of velocity and acceleration, we obtain Kepler's laws without solving differential equations. The difficult part of Newton's work, when it calls for non trivial properties of ellipses, is avoided by the introduction of polar coordinates. Then a simple reconsideration of Newton's figure naturally leads to en explicit expression of the velocity and to the equation of the trajectory. This derivation, which can be fully apprehended by beginners at university (or even before) can be considered as a first application of mechanical concepts to a physical problem of great historical and pedagogical interest.

Abstract:In a recent paper A.Beardon and I.Short proposed to use chains of tangent horocycles as an extended tool describing continued fractions. We review the origin of such construction from the Moebius transformations point of view. Related descriptions with chains of orthogonal horocycles emerged as a result. The approach is extended to several dimensions in a way which is compatible to the early proposition of A.Beardon based on Clifford algebras.

The second author described periods and sometimes precise form of continued fractions of $\sqrt{N}$, where $N$ is a natural number. In cases where we were able to find such results in literature, we recall the original authors, however many results seem to be new.

Abstract:For a complex polynomial $D(t)$ of even degree, one may define the continued fraction of $\sqrt{D(t)}$. This was found relevant already by Abel in 1826, and later by Chebyshev, concerning integration of (hyperelliptic) differentials; they realized that, contrary to the classical case of square roots of positive integers treated by Lagrange and Galois, we do not always have pre-periodicity of the partial quotients. In this paper we shall prove that, however, a correct analogue of Lagrange's theorem still exists in full generality: pre-periodicity of the {\it degrees} of the partial quotients always holds. Apparently, this fact was never noted before. This also yields a corresponding formula for the degrees of the convergents, for which we shall prove new bounds which are generally best possible (halving the known ones). We shall further study other aspects of the continued fraction, like the growth of the heights of partial quotients. Throughout, some striking phenomena appear, related to the geometry of (generalized) Hyperelliptic Jacobians. Another conclusion central in this paper concerns the poles of the convergents: there can be only finitely many rational ones which occur infinitely many times. (This is crucial for applications to a function field version of a question of McMullen.) Our methods rely, among other things, on linking Padé approximants and convergents with divisor relations in generalized Jacobians; this shall allow an application of a version for algebraic groups, proved in this paper, of the Skolem-Mahler-Lech theorem.

Abstract:In this paper we give a geometric interpretation of the renormalization algorithm and of the continued fraction map that we introduced in arxiv:0905.0871 to give a characterization of symbolic sequences for linear flows in the regular octagon. We interpret this algorithm as renormalization on the Teichmueller disk of the octagon and explain the relation with Teichmueller geodesic flow. This connection is analogous to the classical relation between Sturmian sequences, continued fractions and geodesic flow on the modular surface. We use this connection to construct the natural extension and the invariant measure for the continued fraction map. We also define an acceleration of the continued fraction map which has a finite invariant measure.
