Abstract:In this essay we give an overview on the problem of rogue or freak wave formation in the ocean. The matter of the phenomenon is a sporadic occurrence of unexpectedly high waves on the sea surface. These waves cause serious danger for sailing and sea use. A number of huge wave accidents, resulting in damages, ship losses and people injuries and deaths, are known. Now marine researchers do believe that these waves belong to a specific kind of sea wave, not taken into account by conventional models for sea wind waves. This paper addresses the nature of the rogue wave problem from a general viewpoint based on wave process ideas. We start by introducing some primitive elements of sea wave physics with the purpose of paving the way for further discussion. We discuss linear physical mechanisms which are responsible for high wave formation, at first. Then, we proceed with a description of different sea conditions, starting from the open deep sea, and approaching the sea coast. Nonlinear effects which are able to cause rogue waves are emphasised. In conclusion we briefly discuss the generality of the physical mechanisms suggested for the rogue wave explanation; they are valid for rogue wave phenomena in other media such as solid matters, superconductors, plasmas and nonlinear optics.

Spontaneous emergence of rogue waves in partially coherent waves: A quantitative experimental comparison between hydrodynamics and optics

Abstract:Rogue waves are extreme and rare fluctuations of the wave field that have been discussed in many physical systems. Their presence substantially influences the statistical properties of a partially coherent wave field, i.e., a wave field characterized by a finite band spectrum with random Fourier phases. Their understanding is fundamental for the design of ships and offshore platforms. In many meteorological conditions waves in the ocean are characterized by the so-called Joint North Sea Wave Project (JONSWAP) spectrum. Here we compare two unique experimental results: the first one has been performed in a 270 m wave tank and the other in optical fibers. In both cases, waves characterized by a JONSWAP spectrum and random Fourier phases have been launched at the input of the experimental device. The quantitative comparison, based on an appropriate scaling of the two experiments, shows a very good agreement between the statistics in hydrodynamics and optics. Spontaneous emergence of heavy tails in the probability density function of the wave amplitude is observed in both systems. The results demonstrate the universal features of rogue waves and provide a fundamental and explicit bridge between two important fields of research. Numerical simulations are also compared with experimental results.

Abstract:There are many examples in physics of systems showing rogue wave behaviour, the generation of high amplitude events at low probability. Although initially studied in oceanography, rogue waves have now been seen in many other domains, with particular recent interest in optics. Although most studies in optics have focussed on how nonlinearity can drive rogue wave emergence, purely linear effects have also been shown to induce extreme wave amplitudes. In this paper, we report a detailed experimental study of linear rogue waves in an optical system, using a spatial light modulator to impose random phase structure on a coherent optical field. After free space propagation, different random intensity patterns are generated, including partially-developed speckle, a broadband caustic network, and an intermediate pattern with characteristics of both speckle and caustic structures. Intensity peaks satisfying statistical criteria for rogue waves are seen especially in the case of the caustic network, and are associated with broader spatial spectra. In addition, the electric field statistics of the intermediate pattern shows properties of an optical sea with near-Gaussian statistics in elevation amplitude, and trough-to-crest statistics that are near-Rayleigh distributed but with an extended tail where a number of rogue wave events are observed.

Abstract:We review the study of rogue waves and related instabilities in optical and oceanic environments, with particular focus on recent experimental developments. In optics, we emphasize results arising from the use of real-time measurement techniques, whilst in oceanography we consider insights obtained from analysis of real-world ocean wave data and controlled experiments in wave tanks. Although significant progress in understanding rogue waves has been made based on an analogy between wave dynamics in optics and hydrodynamics, these comparisons have predominantly focused on one-dimensional nonlinear propagation scenarios. As a result, there remains significant debate about the dominant physical mechanisms driving the generation of ocean rogue waves in the complex environment of the open sea. Here, we review state-of-the-art of rogue wave studies in optics and hydrodynamics, aiming to clearly identify similarities and differences between the results obtained in the two fields. In hydrodynamics, we take care to review results that support both nonlinear and linear interpretations of ocean rogue wave formation, and in optics, we also summarise results from an emerging area of research applying the measurement techniques developed for the study of rogue waves to dissipative soliton systems. We conclude with a discussion of important future research directions.

Abstract:Significance Quantifying the departure from Gaussianity of the wave-height distribution in the seas and thereby estimating the likelihood of appearance of rogue waves is a long-standing problem with important practical implications for boats and naval structures. Here, a procedure is introduced to identify ocean states that are precursors to rogue waves, which could permit their early detection. Our findings indicate that rogue waves obey a large deviation principle—i.e., they are dominated by single realizations—which our method calculates by solving an optimization problem. The method generalizes to estimate the probability of extreme events in other deterministic dynamical systems with random initial data and/or parameters, by using prior information about the nature of their statistics.
Rogue events in spatio-temporal numerical simulations of unidirectional waves in basins of different depth

Abstract:The evolution of unidirectional nonlinear sea surface waves is calculated numerically by means of solutions of the Euler equations. The wave dynamics corresponds to quasi-equilibrium states characterized by JONSWAP spectra. The spatio-temporal data are collected and processed providing information about the wave height probability and typical appearance of abnormally high waves (rogue waves). The waves are considered at different water depths ranging from deep to relatively shallow cases ($k_p h > 0.8$, where $k_p$ is the peak wavenumber, and $h$ is the local depth). The asymmetry between front and rear rogue wave slopes is identified; it becomes apparent for sufficiently high waves in rough sea states at all considered depths. The lifetimes of rogue events may reach up to 30-60 wave periods depending on the water depth. The maximum observed wave has height of about 3 significant wave heights. A few randomly chosen in-situ time series from the Baltic Sea are in agreement with the general picture of the numerical simulations.

Nonlinear internal gravity waves in the atmosphere: Rogue waves, breathers and dark solitons

Abstract:We study nonlinear internal gravity waves (IGWs) in the atmosphere. The reductive perturbation method is used to derive a system of two-dimensional nonlinear equations for the envelope of velocity stream function and the mean flow. In the one-dimensional case, we obtain a nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation corresponding to both horizontal and vertical propagation of IGWs. Depending on the characteristic wavelengths, the NLS equation is focusing or defocusing. In the focusing case, non-stationary solutions in the form of the Peregrine soliton, the Akhmediev breather and the Kuznetsov-Ma breather are considered as potential candidates for the modeling of rogue waves in the atmosphere. In the defocusing case, stationary nonlinear IGWs are considered in the form of nonlinear periodic waves and dark solitons.

Abstract:Ocean rogue waves are large and suddenly appearing surface gravity waves, which may cause severe damage to ships and other maritime structures. Despite years of research, the exact origin of rogue waves is still disputed. Linear interference of waves with random phase has often been cited as one possible explanation, but apparently does not satisfactorily explain the probability of extreme events in the ocean. Other explanations therefore suggested a decisive role of a nonlinearity in the system. Here we show that linear interference of a finite and variable number of waves may very well explain the heavy tail in the wave height distribution. Our model can explain all prototypical ocean rogue waves reported so far, including the "three sisters" as well as rogue holes. We further suggest nonlinear time series analysis for estimation of the characteristic number of interfering waves for a given sea state. If ocean dynamics is ruled by interference of less than ten waves, rogue waves cannot appear as a matter of principle. In contrast, for larger numbers, their appearance is much more likely than predicted by parameterless models or longterm observation. The pronounced threshold behavior of our model enables effective forecasting of extreme ocean waves.

Abstract:We propose a new conceptual framework for the prediction of rogue waves and third-order space-time extremes of wind seas that relies on the Tayfun (1980) and Janssen (2009) models coupled with Adler-Taylor (2009) theory on the Euler characteristics of random fields. Extreme statistics of the Andrea rogue wave event are examined capitalizing on European Reanalysis (ERA)-interim data. A refinement of Janssen's (2003) theory suggests that in realistic oceanic seas characterized by short-crested multidirectional waves, homogeneous and Gaussian initial conditions become irrelevant as the wave field adjusts to a non-Gaussian state dominated by bound nonlinearities over time scales $t\gg t_{c}\approx0.13T_{0}/\nu\sigma_{\theta}$, where $T_{0}$, $\nu$ and $\sigma_{\theta}$ denote mean wave period, spectral bandwidth and angular spreading of dominant waves. For the Andrea storm, ERA-interim predictions yield $t_{c}/T_{0}\sim O(1)$ indicating that quasi-resonant interactions are negligible. Further, the mean maximum sea surface height expected over the Ekofisk platform's area is higher than that expected at a fixed point. However, both of these statistics underestimate the actual crest height $h_{obs}\sim1.63H_s$ observed at a point near the Ekofisk site, where $H_s$ is the significant wave height. To explain the nature of such extreme, we account for both skewness and kurtosis effects and consider the threshold $h_{q}$ exceeded with probability $q$ by the maximum surface height of a sea state over an area in time. We find that $h_{obs}$ nearly coincides with the threshold $h_{1/1000}\sim1.62H_s$ estimated at a point for a typical $3$-hour sea state, suggesting that the Andrea rogue wave is likely to be a rare occurrence in quasi-Gaussian seas.

Abstract:Rogue waves are associated with various ocean processes, both at the coast and in the open ocean. In either zone, inhomogeneities in the wave field caused by shoaling, crossing seas or current interactions disturb wave statistics, increasing rogue wave probability and magnitude. Such amplification of the frequency of rogue waves and their intensity, i.e. the maximum normalized height, have been attested in numerical simulations and laboratory studies, in particular for wave-current interactions. In this study, we investigate the effect of the current intensity and direction on rogue wave probability, by analyzing long-term observations from the southern North Sea. We observe that the amplification is similar for opposing and following currents. Despite the sea states being dominantly broad-banded and featuring a large directional spread, anomalous statistics are of the same order of magnitude as those observed in unidirectional laboratory experiments for stationary currents.

Abstract:In this paper, we numerically show and discuss the existence and characteristics of rogue heat and diffusion waves. More specifically, we use two different nonlinear heat (diffusion) models and show that modulation instability leads to the generation of unexpected and large fluctuations in the frame of these models. These fluctuations can be named as rogue heat (diffusion) waves. We discuss the properties and statistics of such rogue waves. Our results can find many important applications in many branches such as the nonlinear heat transfer, turbulence, financial mathematics, chemical or biological diffusion, nuclear reactions, subsurface water infiltration, and pore water pressure diffusion modeled in the frame of nonlinear Terzaghi consolidation models, just to name a few.

Abstract:We investigate experimentally the statistical properties of a wind-generated wave field and the spontaneous formation of rogue waves in an annular flume. Unlike many experiments on rogue waves, where waves are mechanically generated, here the wave field is forced naturally by wind as it is in the ocean. What is unique about the present experiment is that the annular geometry of the tank makes waves propagating circularly in an {\it unlimited-fetch} condition. Within this peculiar framework, we discuss the temporal evolution of the statistical properties of the surface elevation. We show that rogue waves and heavy-tail statistics may develop naturally during the growth of the waves just before the wave height reaches a stationary condition. Our results shed new light on the formation of rogue waves in a natural environment.

Abstract:We report direct observations of surface waves from a stereo camera system along with concurrent measurements of wind speed during an expedition across the Southern Ocean in the austral winter aboard South African icebreaker S.A.~Agulhas~II. Records include water surface elevation across a range of wave conditions, spanning from early stages of wave growth to full development. We give experimental evidence of rogue seas, i.e., sea states characterizided by heavy tails of the probability density function well beyond the expectation based on bound mode theory. These conditions emerge during wave growth, where strong wind forcing and high nonlinearity drive wave dynamics. Quasi-resonance wave-wave interactions, which are known to sustain the generation of large amplitude rogue waves, capture this behaviour. Wave statistics return to normality as the wind forcing ceases and waves switch to a full developed condition.

Abstract:General rogue waves in the Davey-Stewartson-I equation are derived by the bilinear method. It is shown that the simplest (fundamental) rogue waves are line rogue waves which arise from the constant background with a line profile and then disappear into the constant background again. It is also shown that multi-rogue waves describe the interaction of several fundamental rogue waves. These multi-rogue waves also arise from the constant background and then decay back to it, but in the intermediate times, interesting curvy wave patterns appear. However, higher-order rogue waves are found to show more interesting features. Specifically, only part of the wave structure in the higher-order rogue waves rises from the constant background and then retreats back to it, and this transient wave exhibits novel patterns such as parabolas. But the other part of the wave structure comes from the far distance as a localized lump, which decelerates to the near field and interacts with the transient rogue wave, and is then reflected back and accelerates to the large distance again. These rogue-wave solutions have interesting implications for two-dimensional surface water waves in the ocean.

Abstract:We report the first observation of extreme wave events (rogue waves) in parametrically driven capillary waves. Rogue waves are observed above a certain threshold in forcing. Above this threshold, frequency spectra broaden and develop exponential tails. For the first time we present evidence of strong four-wave coupling in non-linear waves (high tricoherence), which points to modulation instability as the main mechanism in rogue waves. The generation of rogue waves is identified as the onset of a distinct tail in the probability density function of the wave heights. Their probability is higher than expected from the measured wave background.

Abstract:A prototypical example of a rogue wave structure in a two-dimensional model is presented in the context of the Davey-Stewartson II (DS II) equation arising in water waves. The analytical methodology involves a Taylor expansion of an eigenfunctionof the model's Lax pair which is used to form a hierarchy of infinitely many new eigenfunctions. These are used for the construction of two-dimensional (2D) rogue waves (RWs) of the DS II equation by the even-fold Darboux transformation (DT). The obtained 2D RWs, which are localized in both space and time, can be viewed as a 2D analogue of the Peregrine soliton and are thus natural candidates to describe oceanic RW phenomena,as well as ones in 2D fluid systems and water tanks.

Abstract:Rogue wave is a kind of wave that possesses concentrated energy, strong nonlinear and enormous devastating. When it interacts with the deep-sea structures, the structure will suffer a serious threat, and it may even cause significant harm to the offshore staff and property Studies on the mechanism of rogue wave are of great significance to the platform design and security. It is also one of the hot issues on the waves of hydrodynamic studies. Some breather-type solutions of NLS equation have been considered as prototypes of rogue waves in ocean. They can appear from smooth initial condition only with a certain disturb given by the exact solution of NLS. In this paper, we have numerically studied rogue waves based on fourth order nonlinear Schrodinger equation. We show that the peaks of the largest amplitude of the resulting waves can be described in terms of the Peregrine breather-type solution as the solution of NLS equation.
