Abstract:We show how to construct a non-2-colorable k-uniform hypergraph with (2^(1 + o(1)))^k edges. By the duality of hypergraphs and monotone k-CNF-formulas this gives an unsatisfiable monotone k-CNF with (2^(1 + o(1)))^k clauses

Abstract:Inspired by earlier results about proper and polychromatic coloring of hypergraphs, we investigate such colorings of directed hypergraphs, that is, hypergraphs in which the vertex set of each hyperedge is partitioned into two parts, a tail and a head. We present a conjecture of D. Pálvölgyi and the author, which states that directed hypergraphs with a certain restriction on their pairwise intersections can be properly colored with two colors. Besides other contributions, our main result is a proof of this conjecture for 3-uniform directed hypergraphs. This result can be phrased equivalently such that if a 3-uniform directed hypergraph avoids a certain directed hypergraph with two hyperedges, then it admits a proper 2-coloring. Previously, only extremal problems regarding the maximum number of edges of directed hypergraphs that avoid a certain hyperedge were studied.

Abstract:Gyárfás famously showed that in every r -coloring of the edges of the complete graph Kn , there is a monochromatic connected component with at least nr−1 vertices. A recent line of study by Conlon, Tyomkyn, and the second author addresses the analogous question about monochromatic connected components with many edges. In this paper, we study a generalization of these questions for k -uniform hypergraphs . Over a wide range of extensions of the definition of connectivity to higher uniformities, we provide both upper and lower bounds for the size of the largest monochromatic component that are tight up to a factor of 1+o(1) as the number of colors grows. We further generalize these questions to ask about counts of vertex s -sets contained within the edges of large monochromatic components. We conclude with more precise results in the particular case of two colors.

Abstract:<p>For fixed positive integers <math>r</math> and <math>k</math>, and a fixed <math>k</math>-uniform hypergraph <math>F</math>, we look for <math>n</math>-vertex hypergraphs that admit the maximum number of <math>r</math>-edge-colorings with the property that there is no copy of <math>F</math> for which all hyperedges are assigned different colors. We consider <math>F=Hℓ+1(k)</math>, the <math>k</math>-uniform expanded complete graph, and we prove that the Turán hypergraph <math>Tℓ(k)(n)</math>, the balanced <math>ℓ</math>-partite <math>k</math>-uniform hypergraph on <math>n</math> vertices, is the only extremal configuration for any <math>r≥r0(k,ℓ)</math> and large <math>n</math>.</p>

On two-coloring bipartite uniform hypergraphs

Abstract:Of a given bipartite graph $G = (V, E)$, it is elementary to construct a bipartition in time $O(|E|)$. For a given $k$-graph $H = H^{(k)}$ with $k \geq 3$ fixed, Lovász proved that deciding whether $H$ is bipartite is NP-complete. Let $\mathcal{B}_n$ denote the collection of all $[n]$-vertex bipartite $k$-graphs. We construct, of a given $H \in \mathcal{B}_n$, a bipartition in time averaging $O(n^k)$ over the class $\mathcal{B}_n$. (When $k=3$, our result expedites one of Person and Schacht.) We also consider an application to the class of all $[n]$-vertex 3-graphs $H$ forbidding the Fano plane as a subhypergraph.

Uniquely colorable hypergraphs

Abstract:An $r$-uniform hypergraph is uniquely $k$-colorable if there exists exactly one partition of its vertex set into $k$ parts such that every edge contains at most one vertex from each part. For integers $k \ge r \ge 2$, let $\Phi_{k,r}$ denote the minimum real number such that every $n$-vertex $k$-partite $r$-uniform hypergraph with positive codegree greater than $\Phi_{k,r} \cdot n$ and no isolated vertices is uniquely $k$-colorable. A classic result by of Bollobás\cite{Bol78} established that $\Phi_{k,2} = \frac{3k-5}{3k-2}$ for every $k \ge 2$. We consider the uniquely colorable problem for hypergraphs. Our main result determines the precise value of $\Phi_{k,r}$ for all $k \ge r \ge 3$. In particular, we show that $\Phi_{k,r}$ exhibits a phase transition at approximately $k = \frac{4r-2}{3}$, a phenomenon not seen in the graph case. As an application of the main result, combined with a classic theorem by Frankl--Füredi--Kalai, we derive general bounds for the analogous problem on minimum positive $i$-degrees for all $1\leq i<r$, which are tight for infinitely many cases.

On harmonious coloring of hypergraphs

Abstract:A harmonious coloring of a $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$ is a vertex coloring such that no two vertices in the same edge have the same color, and each $k$-element subset of colors appears on at most one edge. The harmonious number $h(H)$ is the least number of colors needed for such a coloring. The paper contains a new proof of the upper bound $h(H)=O(\sqrt[k]{k!m})$ on the harmonious number of hypergraphs of maximum degree $\Delta$ with $m$ edges. We use the local cut lemma of A. Bernshteyn.

Coloring hypergraphs that are the union of nearly disjoint cliques

Abstract:We consider the maximum chromatic number of hypergraphs consisting of cliques that have pairwise small intersections. Designs of the appropriate parameters produce optimal constructions, but these are known to exist only when the number of cliques is exponential in the clique size. We construct near designs where the number of cliques is polynomial in the clique size, and show that they have large chromatic number. The case when the cliques have pairwise intersections of size at most one seems particularly challenging. Here we give lower bounds by analyzing a random greedy hypergraph process. We also consider the related question of determining the maximum number of caps in a finite projective/affine plane and obtain nontrivial upper and lower bounds.

Abstract:Given a multi-hypergraph $G$ that is edge-colored into color classes $E_1, \ldots, E_n$, a full rainbow matching is a matching of $G$ that contains exactly one edge from each color class $E_i$. One way to guarantee the existence of a full rainbow matching is to have the size of each color class $E_i$ be sufficiently large compared to the maximum degree of $G$. In this paper, we apply a simple iterative method to construct edge-colored multi-hypergraphs with a given maximum degree, large color classes, and no full rainbow matchings. First, for every $r \ge 1$ and $\Delta \ge 2$, we construct edge-colored $r$-uniform multi-hypergraphs with maximum degree $\Delta$ such that each color class has size $|E_i| \ge r\Delta - 1$ and there is no full rainbow matching, which demonstrates that a theorem of Aharoni, Berger, and Meshulam (2005) is best possible. Second, we construct properly edge-colored multigraphs with no full rainbow matchings which disprove conjectures of Delcourt and Postle (2022). Finally, we apply results on full rainbow matchings to list edge-colorings and prove that a color degree generalization of Galvin's theorem (1995) does not hold.

Hypergraph saturation for the bow tie

Abstract:Erdős and Sós initiated the study of the maximum size of a $k$-uniform set system, for $k \geq 4$, with no singleton intersections $50$ years ago. In this work, we investigate the dual problem: finding the minimum size of a $k$-uniform hypergraph with no singleton intersections, such that adding any missing hyperedge forces a singleton intersection. These problems, known as saturation and semi-saturation, are typically challenging. Our focus is on an elementary-to-state case in the line of work by Erdős, Füredi and Tuza. We establish tight linear bounds for $k=4$, marking one of the first non-obvious cases with such a bound.

Abstract:We show that any proper coloring of a Kneser graph KGn,k with n−2k+2 colors contains a trivial color class (i.e., a color class consisting of sets that all contain a fixed element), provided n>(2+ε)k2 , where ε→0 as k→∞ . This bound is essentially tight. This is a consequence of a more general result on the minimum number of non-trivial color classes needed to properly color KGn,k .

Abstract:Let r be an integer with r >= 2 and G be a connected r-uniform hypergraph with m edges. By refining the broken cycle theorem for hypergraphs, we show that if k>m-1ln(1+2)approximate to 1.135(m-1), then the k-list assignment of G admitting the fewest colorings is the constant list assignment. This extends the previous results of Donner, Thomassen, and the current authors for graphs.

Abstract:A result of Gyárfás says that for every $3$-coloring of the edges of the complete graph $K_n$, there is a monochromatic component of order at least $\frac{n}{2}$, and this is best possible when $4$ divides $n$. Furthermore, for all $k\geq 3$ and every $(k+1)$-coloring of the edges of the complete $k$-uniform hypergraph $K_n^{k}$, there is a monochromatic component of order at least $\frac{kn}{k+1}$ and this is best possible for all $n$. Recently, Guggiari and Scott and independently Rahimi proved a strengthening of the graph case in the result above which says that the same conclusion holds if $K_n$ is replaced by any graph on $n$ vertices with minimum degree at least $\frac{5n}{6}-1$; furthermore, this bound on the minimum degree is best possible. We prove a strengthening of the $k\geq 3$ case in the result above which says that the same conclusion holds if $K_n^k$ is replaced by any $k$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices with minimum $(k-1)$-degree at least $\frac{kn}{k+1}-(k-1)$; furthermore, this bound on the $(k-1)$-degree is best possible.

Abstract:Constructing the graphs with some specific properties is an important and interesting problem in the field of graph theory. A graph G is uniquely k-colorable if the chromatic number of G is k and G has only one k-coloring up to permutation of the colors. In this paper, we give three methods for recursively constructing uniquely 3-colorable graphs. Moreover, we give a simple counterexample on 16 vertices to S J Xu's conjecture concerning uniquely 3-colorable graphs without triangles, and based on this graph we construct an infinite family of uniquely 3-colorable, 4-regular and triangle-free graphs by our construction methods.
List colorings of $k$-partite $k$-graphs

Abstract:A $k$-uniform hypergraph (or $k$-graph) $H = (V, E)$ is $k$-partite if $V$ can be partitioned into $k$ sets $V_1, \ldots, V_k$ such that each edge in $E$ contains precisely one vertex from each $V_i$. In this note, we consider list colorings for such hypergraphs. We show that for any $\epsilon > 0$ if each vertex $v \in V(H)$ is assigned a list of size $|L(v)| \geq \left((k-1+\epsilon)\Delta/\log \Delta\right)^{1/(k-1)}$, then $H$ admits a proper $L$-coloring, provided $\Delta$ is sufficiently large. Up to a constant factor, this matches the bound on the chromatic number of simple $k$-graphs shown by Frieze and Mubayi, and that on the list chromatic number of triangle free $k$-graphs shown by Li and Postle. Our results hold in the more general setting of "color-degree" as has been considered for graphs. Furthermore, we establish a number of asymmetric statements matching results of Alon, Cambie, and Kang for bipartite graphs.

Tight Hamilton cycles with high discrepancy

Abstract:In this paper, we initiate the study of discrepancy questions for spanning subgraphs of $k$-uniform hypergraphs. Our main result is that any $2$-colouring of the edges of a $k$-uniform $n$-vertex hypergraph $G$ with minimum $(k-1)$-degree $\delta(G) \ge (1/2+o(1))n$ contains a tight Hamilton cycle with high discrepancy, that is, with at least $n/2+\Omega(n)$ edges of one colour. The minimum degree condition is asymptotically best possible and our theorem also implies a corresponding result for perfect matchings. Our tools combine various structural techniques such as Turán-type problems and hypergraph shadows with probabilistic techniques such as random walks and the nibble method. We also propose several intriguing problems for future research.

Abstract:A hypergraph is "$d$-degenerate" if every subhypergraph has a vertex of degree at most $d$. A greedy algorithm colours every such hypergraph with at most $d+1$ colours. We show that this bound is tight, by constructing an $r$-uniform $d$-degenerate hypergraph with chromatic number $d+1$ for all $r\geq2$ and $d\geq1$. Moreover, the hypergraph is triangle-free, where a "triangle" in an $r$-uniform hypergraph consists of three edges whose union is a set of $r+1$ vertices.

Abstract:A $k$-uniform tight cycle is a $k$-graph with a cyclic order of its vertices such that every $k$ consecutive vertices from an edge. We show that for $k\geq 3$, every red-blue edge-coloured complete $k$-graph on $n$ vertices contains $k$ vertex-disjoint monochromatic tight cycles that together cover $n - o(n)$ vertices.

Abstract:Hypergraph expanders are hypergraphs with surprising, non-intuitive expansion properties. In a recent paper, the first author gave a simple construction, which can be randomized, of $3$-uniform hypergraph expanders with polylogarithmic degree. We generalize this construction, giving a simple construction of $r$-uniform hypergraph expanders for all $r \geq 3$.

Abstract:We exhibit a 5-uniform hypergraph that has no polychromatic 3-coloring, but all its restricted subhypergraphs with edges of size at least 3 are 2-colorable. This disproves a bold conjecture of Keszegh and the author, and can be considered as the first step to understand polychromatic colorings of hereditary hypergraph families better since the seminal work of Berge. We also show that our method cannot give hypergraphs of arbitrary high uniformity, and mention some connections to panchromatic colorings.
