Abstract:We prove that the constant terms of powers of a Laurent polynomial satisfy certain congruences modulo prime powers. As a corollary, the generating series of these numbers considered as a function of a p-adic variable satisfies a non-trivial analytic continuation property, similar to what B. Dwork showed for a class of hypergeometric series.

Abstract:This paper is a continuation of our Dwork crystals series. Here we exploit the Cartier operation to prove supercongruences for expansion coefficients of rational functions. In the process it appears that excellent Frobenius lifts are a driving force behind supercongruences. Originally introduced by Dwork, these excellent lifts have occurred rather infrequently in the literature, and only in the context of families of elliptic curves and abelian varieties. In the final sections of this paper we present a list of examples that occur in the case of families of Calabi-Yau varieties.

Abstract:In the present paper, we derive formulas of complex and $\ell$-adic multiple polylogarithms, which have two aspects: a duality in terms of indexes and a reflection in terms of variables. We provide an algebraic proof of these formulas by using algebraic relations between associators arising from the $S_3$-symmetry of the projective line minus three points.

Abstract:We prove that mod-$p$ congruences between polynomials in $\mathbb{Z}_p[X]$ are equivalent to deeper $p$-power congruences between power-sum functions of their roots. This result generalizes to torsion-free $\mathbb{Z}_{(p)}$-algebras modulo divided-power ideals. Our approach is combinatorial: we introduce a $p$-equivalence relation on partitions, and use it to prove that certain linear combinations of power-sum functions are $p$-integral. We also include a second proof, short and algebraic, suggested by an anonymous referee. As a corollary we obtain a refinement of the Brauer-Nesbitt theorem for a single linear operator, motivated by the study of Hecke modules of mod-$p$ modular forms.

Revisiting Dwork cohomology: Visibility and divisibility of Frobenius eigenvalues in rigid cohomology

Abstract:We study Frobenius eigenvalues of the compactly supported rigid cohomology of a variety defined over a finite field of $q$ elements via Dwork's method. A couple of arithmetic consequences will be drawn from this study. As the first application, we show that the zeta functions for finitely many related affine varieties are capable of witnessing all Frobenius eigenvalues of the rigid cohomology of the variety up to Tate twist. This result does not seem to be known for $\ell$-adic cohomology. As the second application, we prove several $q$-divisibility lower bounds for Frobenius eigenvalues of the rigid cohomology of the variety in terms of the multi-degrees of the defining equations. These divisibility bounds for rigid cohomology are generally better than what is suggested from the best known divisibility bounds in $\ell$-adic cohomology, both before and after the middle cohomological dimension.

Abstract:We study the class of polynomials whose Hessians evaluated at any point of a closed convex cone have Lorentzian signature. This class is a generalization to the remarkable class of Lorentzian polynomials. We prove that hyperbolic polynomials and conic stable polynomials belong to this class, and the set of polynomials with Lorentzian signature is closed. Finally, we develop a method for computing permanents of nonsingular matrices which belong to a class that includes nonsingular $k$-locally singular matrices via hyperbolic programming.

Abstract:We give a congruence for L-functions coming from affine additive exponential sums over a finite field. Precisely, we give a congruence for certain operators coming from Dwork's theory. This congruence is very similar to the congruence of Manin for the characteristic polynomial of the action of Frobenius on the Jacobian of a curve defined over a finite field.

Abstract:For every positive integer $n$, consider the linear operator $\U_{n}$ on polynomials of degree at most $d$ with integer coefficients defined as follows: if we write $\frac{h(t)}{(1 - t)^{d + 1}} = \sum_{m \geq 0} g(m) t^{m}$, for some polynomial $g(m)$ with rational coefficients, then $\frac{\U_{n}h(t)}{(1- t)^{d + 1}} = \sum_{m \geq 0} g(nm) t^{m}$. We show that there exists a positive integer $n_{d}$, depending only on $d$, such that if $h(t)$ is a polynomial of degree at most $d$ with nonnegative integer coefficients and $h(0) \geq 1$, then for $n \geq n_{d}$, $\U_{n}h(t)$ has simple, real, strictly negative roots and positive, strictly log concave and strictly unimodal coefficients. Applications are given to Ehrhart $\delta$-polynomials and unimodular triangulations of dilations of lattice polytopes, as well as Hilbert series of Veronese subrings of Cohen--MacCauley graded rings.

Abstract:After reconsidering the theorem of continuity of the roots of a polynomial in terms of its coefficients in the deformation framework, we study the stability of the greater common divisor of two polynomials compared to perturbations on their roots. We apply this results to the study of deformations of a linear operator in finite dimension and in particular to the roots study of deformed matrices.

Abstract:We consider arbitrary algebraic families of lower order deformations of nondegenerate toric exponential sums over a finite field. We construct a relative polytope with the aid of which we define a ring of coefficients consisting of p-adic analytic functions with polyhedral growth prescribed by the relative polytope. Using this we compute relative cohomology for such families and calculate sharp estimates for the relative Frobenius map. In applications one is interested in L-functions associated with linear algebra operations (symmetric powers, tensor powers, exterior powers and combinations thereof) applied to the relative Frobenius. Using methods pioneered by Ax, Katz and Bombieri we prove estimates for the degree and total degree of the associated L-function and p-divisibility of the reciprocal zeros and poles. Similar estimates are then established for affine families and pure Archimedean weight families (in the simplicial case).

Abstract:We show that the Wynn recurrence (the missing identity of Frobenius of the Padé approximation theory) can be incorporated into the theory of integrable systems as a reduction of the discrete Schwarzian Kadomtsev–Petviashvili equation. This allows, in particular, to present the geometric meaning of the recurrence as a construction of the appropriately constrained quadrangular set of points. The interpretation is valid for a projective line over arbitrary skew field what motivates to consider non-commutative Padé theory. We transfer the corresponding elements, including the Frobenius identities, to the non-commutative level using the quasideterminants. Using an example of the characteristic series of the Fibonacci language we present an application of the theory to the regular languages. We introduce the non-commutative version of the discrete-time Toda lattice equations together with their integrability structure. Finally, we discuss application of the Wynn recurrence in a different context of the geometric theory of discrete analytic functions.

Abstract:The relative Langlands program introduced by Ben-Zvi--Sakellaridis--Venkatesh posits a duality structure exchanging automorphic periods and L-functions, which can be encoded by pairs of dual Hamiltonian actions. In work of the author and Venkatesh, an extension of the definitions to certain singular spaces was made with the objective of restoring duality in some well-known automorphic integrals. In this companion article we apply these definitions to establish duality in the context of affine toric varieties, and study finer structures regarding regularization and stabilizers that are instructive for the general case.

Abstract:Under relatively mild and natural conditions, we establish an integral period relations for the (real or imaginary) quadratic base change of an elliptic cusp form. This answers a conjecture of Hida regarding the {\it congruence number} controlling the congruences between this base change and other eigenforms which are not base change. As a corollary, we establish the Bloch-Kato conjecture for adjoint modular Galois representations twisted by an even quadratic character. In the odd case, we formulate a conjecture linking the degree two topological period attached to the base change Bianchi modular form, the cotangent complex of the corresponding Hecke algebra and the archimedean regulator attached to some Beilinson-Flach element.

Abstract:Given a lattice polytope $P$ and a prime $p$, we define a function from the set of primitive symplectic $p$-adic lattices to the rationals that extracts the $\ell$th coefficient of the Ehrhart polynomial of $P$ relative to the given lattice. Inspired by work of Gunnells and Rodriguez-Villegas in type $\mathsf{A}$, we show that these functions are eigenfunctions of a suitably defined action of the spherical symplectic Hecke algebra. Although they depend significantly on the polytope $P$, their eigenvalues are independent of $P$ and expressed as polynomials in $p$. We define local zeta functions that enumerate the values of these Hecke eigenfunctions on the vertices of the affine Bruhat--Tits buildings associated with $p$-adic symplectic groups. We compute these zeta functions by enumerating $p$-adic lattices by their elementary divisors and, simultaneously, one Hermite parameter. We report on a general functional equation satisfied by these local zeta functions, confirming a conjecture of Vankov.

Geometric Combinatorics of Polynomials I: The Case of a Single Polynomial

Abstract:There are many different algebraic, geometric and combinatorial objects that one can attach to a complex polynomial with distinct roots. In this article we introduce a new object that encodes many of the existing objects that have previously appeared in the literature. Concretely, for every complex polynomial $p$ with $d$ distinct roots and degree at least 2, we produce a canonical compact planar 2-complex that is a compact metric version of a tiled phase diagram. It has a locally CAT(0) metric that is locally Euclidean away from a finite set of interior points indexed by the critical points of $p$, and each of its 2-cells is a metric rectangle. From this planar rectangular 2-complex one can use metric graphs known as metric cacti and metric banyans to read off several pieces of combinatorial data: a chain in the partition lattice, a cyclic factorization of a d-cycle, a real noncrossing partition (also known as a primitive d-major), and the monodromy permutations for the polynomial. This article is the first in a series.

Abstract:We begin with modular form periods, a focal point of several Yuri Manin's works. The similarity is discussed between the corresponding zeta-polynomials and superpolynomials of algebraic links, closely related to Khovanov-Rozansky polynomials. We focus on DAHA superpolynomials and motivic ones, defined via compactified Jacobians of plane curve singularities and their counterparts in arbitrary ranks; the non-unibranch construction is new. They conjecturally coincide with the corresponding generalizations of L-functions and satisfy the Riemann Hypothesis in some sectors of the parameters. Presumably, the motivic ones an be interpreted as certain partition functions of Landau-Ginzburg models associated with plane curve singularities; RH for them is remarkably similar to the Lee-Yang circle theorem for Ising models. A q,t-deformation of the Witten index is obtained as an application. General perspectives of the motivic theory of isolated curve and surface singularities are discussed, including possible implications in number theory. Also, we introduce super-analogs of $\rho_{ab}$-invariants and discuss super-deformations of the Riemann's zeta. Among other topics: Verlinde algebras, and the topological vertex.

Abstract:Abstract We compute the expansion of the cohomology class of the permutahedral variety in the basis of Schubert classes. The resulting structure constants $a_w$ are expressed as a sum of normalized mixed Eulerian numbers indexed naturally by reduced words of $w$. The description implies that the $a_w$ are positive for all permutations $w\in S_n$ of length $n-1$, thereby answering a question of Harada, Horiguchi, Masuda, and Park. We use the same expression to establish the invariance of $a_w$ under taking inverses and conjugation by the longest word and subsequently establish an intriguing cyclic sum rule for the numbers. We then move toward a deeper combinatorial understanding for the $a_w$ by exploiting in addition the relation to Postnikov’s divided symmetrization. Finally, we are able to give a combinatorial interpretation for $a_w$ when $w$ is vexillary, in terms of certain tableau descents. It is based in part on a relation between the $a_w$ and principal specializations of Schubert polynomials. Along the way, we prove results and raise questions of independent interest about the combinatorics of permutations, Schubert polynomials, and related objects. We also sketch how to extend our approach to other Lie types, highlighting an identity of Klyachko in particular.
