Abstract:We present a simple, analytic model for pump-probe spectroscopy in dilute atomic gases. Our model treats multilevel atoms, takes several broadening mechanisms into account and, with no free parameters, shows excellent agreement with experimentally observed spectra.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper attempts to address the problem of developing a simple theoretical model based on rate equations to accurately predict Doppler broadening and sub-Doppler broadening spectra of multi-level atoms under different pump intensities in the pump-probe spectroscopy of rubidium atoms. The model considers various broadening mechanisms (such as natural broadening, Doppler broadening, transit-time broadening, etc.) and shows a high degree of agreement with experimental observations without including free parameters. The study particularly focuses on the optical pumping effect occurring in rubidium atoms during the pumping process, which can significantly influence the spectral characteristics even at low intensities.
