Abstract:We show that the family of smoothly non-isotopic Legendrian pretzel knots from the work of Cornwell-Ng-Sivek that all have the same Legendrian invariants as the standard unknot have front-spuns that are Legendrian isotopic to the front-spun of the unknot. Besides that, we construct the first examples of Lagrangian concordances between Legendrian knots that are not regular, and hence not decomposable. Finally, we show that the relation of Lagrangian concordance between Legendrian knots is not anti-symmetric, and hence does not define a partial order. The latter two results are based upon a new type of flexibility for Lagrangian concordances with stabilised Legendrian ends.

On Legendrian representatives of non-fibered knots

Abstract:We show that in $(S^3,\xi_{std})$ if $K$ is a non-trivial knot that realizes the three-dimensional Thurston-Bennequin bound (i.e. $K$ has a Legendrian representative $\Lambda$ with $tb(\Lambda)-rot(\Lambda)=2g(K)-1$), then $K$ has a Legendrian representative $L$ with $tb=0$. Moreover, this result can be easily generalized to contact manifolds that uniquely represent the associated contact invariants. This is the first result on Legendrian representatives of non-fibered knots in $3-$manifolds other than $S^3$. We also show that if $K$ is a nearly fibered knot in $S^3$ then $\tau(K)=g(K)$ implies that $K$ realizes the three-dimensional Thurston-Bennequin bound.

Abstract:We prove that loose Legendrian knots in a rational homology contact 3-sphere, satisfying some additional hypothesis, are Legendrian isotopic if and only if they have the same classical invariants. The proof requires a result of Dymara on loose Legendrian knots and Eliashberg's classification of overtwisted contact structures on 3-manifolds.

Abstract:We introduce and study strongly invertible Legendrian links in the standard contact three-dimensional space. We establish the equivariant analogs of basic results separately well-known for strongly invertible and Legendrian links, i.e. the existence of transvergent front diagrams, an equivariant Legendrian Reidemeister theorem, and an equivariant stabilization theorem à la Fuch-Tabachnikov. We also introduce a maximal equivariant Thurston-Bennequin number for strongly invertible links and we exhibit infinitely many such links for which the invariant coincides with the usual maximal Thurston-Bennequin number. We conjecture that such a coincidence does not hold general and that there exist strongly invertible knots having Legendrian representatives isotopic to their reversed Legendrian mirrors but not isotopic to any strongly invertible Legendrian knot.

Abstract:We present examples of Legendrian knots in $\mathbb{R}^3$ that have linearized Legendrian contact homology over $\mathbb{Z}$ containing torsion. As a consequence, we show that there exist augmentations of Legendrian knots over $\mathbb{Z}$ that are not induced by exact Lagrangian fillings, even though their mod $2$ reductions are.

Abstract:We prove that for any pair of Legendrian representatives of the Chekanov-Eliashberg twist knots with different LOSS invariants, any negative rational contact $r$-surgery with $r\neq -1$ always gives rise to different contact 3-manifolds distinguished by their contact invariants. This gives the first examples of pairs ofLegendrian knots with the same classical invariants but distinct contact $r$-surgeries for all negative rational number $r$. We also generalize the statement from the twist knots to a certain families of two bridge knots.

Abstract:This work applies the ideas of persistent homology to the problem of distinguishing Legendrian knots. We develop a persistent version of Legendrian contact homology by filtering the Chekanov-Eliashberg DGA using the action (height) functional. We present an algorithm for assigning heights to a Lagrangian diagram of a Legendrian knot, and we explain how each Legendrian Reidemeister move changes the height of generators of the DGA in a way that is predictable on the level of homology. More precisely, a Reidemeister move that changes an area patch of a Lagrangian diagram by {\delta} will induce a 2{\delta}-interleaving on the persistent Legendrian contact homology, computed before and after the Reidemeister move. Finally, we develop strong Morse inequalities for our persistent Legendrian contact homology.

Legendrian invariants and half Giroux torsion

Abstract:We collect some observations about Legendrian links with non-vanishing contact invariants, mostly concerning the non-loose realizations of links and the addition of boundary-parallel half Giroux torsion. In particular, we show that every null-homologous link with irreducible complement admits a non-loose Legendrian realization with non-zero (at least) invariant $\text{EH}$ in $\text{SFH}$, in some overtwisted contact structure (determined by its gradings); for many links these come from Gabai's work, for others the existence follows from the sutured interpretation of link Floer invariants. We reveal that separating half Giroux torsion does not necessary cause Legendrian invariants to vanish. Furthermore, we propose a conjectural characterization of links with non-vanishing $\widehat{\mathfrak L}$ in $\widehat{\text{HFL}}$ among links with non-zero $\mathfrak L$ in $c\text{HFL}^-$.

On the Legendrian realisation of parametric families of knots

Abstract:We study the natural inclusion of the space of Legendrian embeddings in $(\mathbb{S}^3,\xi_{\operatorname{std}})$ into the space of smooth embeddings from a homotopical viewpoint. T. Kálmán posed in [Kal] the open question of whether for every fixed knot type $\mathcal{K}$ and Legendrian representative $\mathcal{L}$, the homomorphism $\pi_1(\mathcal{L})\to\pi_1(\mathcal{K})$ is surjective. We positively answer this question for infinitely many knot types $\mathcal{K}$ in the three main families (hyperbolic, torus and satellites) and every stabilised Legendrian representative in $(\mathbb{S}^3,\xi_{\operatorname{std}})$. We then show that for every $n\geq 3$, the homomorphisms $\pi_n(\mathcal{L})\to\pi_n(\mathcal{K})$ and $\pi_n(\mathcal{FL})\to\pi_n(\mathcal{K})$ are never surjective for any knot type $\mathcal K$, Legendrian representative $\mathcal L$ or formal Legendrian representative $\mathcal{FL}$. This shows the existence of rigidity at every higher-homotopy level beyond $\pi_3$. For completeness, we also show that surjectivity at the $\pi_2$-level depends on the smooth knot type.

Legendrian non-isotopic unit conormal bundles in high dimensions

Abstract:For any compact connected submanifold $K$ of $\mathbb{R}^n$, let $\Lambda_K$ denote its unit conormal bundle, which is a Legendrian submanifold of the unit cotangent bundle of $\mathbb{R}^n$. In this paper, we give examples of pairs $(K_0,K_1)$ of compact connected submanifolds of $\mathbb{R}^n$ such that $\Lambda_{K_0}$ is not Legendrian isotopic to $\Lambda_{K_1}$, although they cannot be distinguished by classical invariants. Here, $K_1$ is the image of an embedding $\iota_f \colon K_0 \to \mathbb{R}^n$ which is regular homotopic to the inclusion map of $K_0$ and the codimension in $\mathbb{R}^n$ is greater than or equal to $4$. As non-classical invariants, we define the strip Legendrian contact homology and a coproduct on it under certain conditions on Legendrian submanifolds. Then, we give a purely topological description of these invariants for $\Lambda_K$ when the codimension of $K$ is greater than or equal to $4$. The main examples $\Lambda_{K_0}$ and $\Lambda_{K_1}$ are distinguished by the coproduct, which is computed by using an idea of string topology.

Abstract:Using contact-geometric techniques and sutured Floer homology, we present an alternate formulation of the minus and plus version of knot Floer homology. We further show how natural constructions in the realm of contact geometry give rise to much of the formal structure relating the various versions of Heegaard Floer homology. In addition, to a Legendrian or transverse knot K in a contact manifold (Y,\xi), we associate distinguished classes EHL(K) in the minus-version of knot floer homology and EHIL(K) in the plus version, which are each invariant under Legendrian or transverse isotopies of K. The distinguished class EHL is shown to agree with the Legendrian/transverse invariant defined by Lisca, Ozsvath, Stipsicz, and Szabo despite a strikingly dissimilar definition. While our definitions and constructions only involve sutured Floer homology and contact geometry, the identification of our invariants with known invariants uses bordered sutured Floer homology to make explicit computations of maps between sutured Floer homology groups.

Abstract:We classify Legendrian unknots in overtwisted contact structures on $S^3$. In particular, we show that up to contact isotopy for every pair $(n,\pm(n-1))$ with $n>0$ there are exactly two oriented non-loose Legendrian unknots in $S^3$ with Thurston-Bennequin invariant $n$ and rotation number $\pm(n-1)$. (Only one overtwisted contact structure on $S^3$ admits a non-loose unknot $K$ and the classical invariants have to be $\mathrm{tb}(K)=n$ and $\mathrm{rot}(K)=\pm(n-1)$ for $n>1$.) This can be used to prove two results attributed to Y.~Che\-kan\-ov: The first implies that the contact mapping class group of an overtwisted contact structure on $S^3$ depends on the contact structure. The second result is that the identity component of the contactomorphism group of an overtwisted contact structure on $S^3$ does not always act transitively on the set of boundaries of overtwisted discs.

Abstract:We prove that each overtwisted contact structure has knot types that are represented by infinitely many distinct transverse knots all with the same self-linking number. In some cases, we can even classify all such knots. We also show similar results for Legendrian knots and prove a "folk" result concerning loose transverse and Legendrian knots (that is knots with overtwisted complements) which says that such knots are determined by their classical invariants (up to contactomorphism). Finally we discuss how these results partially fill in our understanding of the "geography" and "botany"' problems for Legendrian knots in overtwisted contact structures, as well as many open questions regarding these problems.

Abstract:In this short note we discuss certain examples of Legendrian submanifolds, whose linearized Legendrian contact (co)homology groups over integers have non-vanishing algebraic torsion. More precisely, for a given arbitrary finitely generated abelian group $G$ and a positive integer $n\geq 3$, $n\neq 4$, we construct examples of Legendrian submanifolds of the standard contact vector space $\mathbb R^{2n+1}$, whose $n-1$-th linearized Legendrian contact (co)homology over $\mathbb Z$ computed with respect to a certain augmentation is isomorphic to $G$.

Abstract:In this note we show that $+1$-contact surgery on distinct Legendrian knots frequently produces contactomorphic manifolds. We also give examples where this happens for $-1$-contact surgery. As an amusing corollary we find overtwisted contact structures that contain a large number of distinct Legendrian knots with the same classical invariants and tight complements.

Abstract:Every null-homologous link in an oriented 3-manifold is isotopic to the boundary of a ribbon of a Legendrian graph for any overtwisted contact structure. However this is not the case if the boundary is required to be non-loose. Here, we define the `Tight Reattachment Property' for a Legendrian graph and show that it implies the boundary of its ribbon is non-loose. We also discuss the applicability of this property and examine examples and constructions of Legendrian graphs with this property.

Naturality of Legendrian LOSS invariant under positive contact surgery

Abstract:Ozsvath and Stipsicz showed that the LOSS invariant is natural under +1 contact surgery. We extend their result and prove the naturality of the LOSS invariant of a Legendrian L under any positive integer contact surgery along another Legendrian S . In addition, when S is rationally null-homologous, we also entirely characterize the Spin^c structure in the surgery cobordism that makes the naturality of contact invariant or LOSS invariant (without conjugation ambiguity). In particular this implies that contact invariant of the +n contact surgery along a rationally null-homologous Legendrian S depends only on the classical invariants of S. The additional generalityprovided by those results allows us to prove that if two Legendrian knots have different LOSS invariants then after adding the same positive twists to each in a suitable sense, the two new Legendrian knots will also have different LOSS invariants. This leads to new infinite families of examples of Legendrian (or transverse) non-simple knots that are distinguished by their LOSS invariants.

The homotopy cardinality of the representation category for a Legendrian knot

Abstract:Given a Legendrian knot in $(\mathbb{R}^3, \ker(dz-ydx))$ one can assign a combinatorial invariants called ruling polynomials. These invariants have been shown to recover not only a (normalized) count of augmentations but are also closely related to a categorical count of augmentations in the form of the homotopy cardinality of the augmentation category. In this article, we prove that that the homotopy cardinality of the $n$-dimensional representation category is a multiple of the $n$-colored ruling polynomial. Along the way, we establish that two $n$-dimensional representations are equivalent in the representation category if they are conjugate DGA homotopic. We also provide some applications to Lagrangian concordance.
