Abstract:We present a derivation that begins with the Navier-Stokes equation and ends with a prediction of multiple statistically stable states identical to those observed in a spanwise rotating plane Couette flow. This derivation is able to explain the presence of multiple states in fully developed turbulence and the selection of one state over another by differently sized computational domains and different initial conditions. According to the present derivation, two and only two statistically stable states are possible in an infinitely large plane Couette flow with spanwise rotation, and that multiple states are not possible at very slow or very rapid rotation speeds. We also show the existence of limit-cycle-like behaviours near statistically stable states.

Abstract:Thin viscous fluid threads falling onto a moving belt behave in a way reminiscent of a sewing machine, generating a rich variety of periodic stitch-like patterns including meanders, W-patterns, alternating loops, and translated coiling. These patterns form to accommodate the difference between the belt speed and the terminal velocity at which the falling thread strikes the belt. Using direct numerical simulations, we show that inertia is not required to produce the aforementioned patterns. We introduce a quasi-static geometrical model which captures the patterns, consisting of three coupled ODEs for the radial deflection, the orientation and the curvature of the path of the thread's contact point with the belt. The geometrical model reproduces well the observed patterns and the order in which they appear as a function of the fall height.

Abstract:We present a control-volume approach for deriving a simplified model for the gravity-driven flow of an axisymmetric liquid film along a vertical fiber. The model accounts for gravitational, viscous, inertial and surface tension effects and results in a pair of coupled one-dimensional nonlinear partial differential equations for the film profile and average downward velocity as functions of time and axial distance along the fiber. Two versions of the model are obtained, one assuming a plug-flow velocity profile and a constant thin boundary layer thickness to model the drag force on the fluid, the other approximating the drag using the fully-developed laminar velocity profile for a locally uniform film. A linear stability analysis shows both models to be unstable to long waves or short wavenumbers, with a specific wavenumber in that range having a maximal growth rate. Numerical simulations confirm this instability and lead to nonlinear periodic traveling wave solutions which can be thought of as chains of identical droplets falling down the fiber. Physical experiments are also carried out on such a system using safflower oil as the working liquid and a taut fishing line as the fiber. A machine learning scheme is used to find the best set of parameters in the laminar flow model to match the experimental results to the simulations. Good agreement is found between the two, with parameter values that are quite close to their original estimates based on the approximate values of the physical parameters.

Abstract:In this fluid dynamics video prepared for the APS-DFD Gallery of Fluid Motion we study the collision of two identical viscous jets at different jet speeds and collision eccentricities. The dynamics of the jet motion are slowed down by orders of magnitude using a synchronized strobe effect coupled with precise timing control of the perturbation frequency imposed on one of the jets. Our results show that different shapes and morphologies appear as we change the collision eccentricity. At low jet speeds ($We_j = 45$) viscous threads and filaments are formed as the jets begin to impinge on each other. As the propagation axis of one of the jets (jet A) is moved closer to the center of the other stream (jet B) they exert a torque on each other. Because of the resulting swirl, jet A rotates around the axis of jet B and finally breaks into droplets through the action of capillary forces; the pinch off of droplets is similar to a stream of balloons which are released in the air. At zero eccentricity the two jets unite into one jet at low speed and the unified jet breaks up after undergoing Rayleigh-Plateau instability. For higher jet velocities ($We_j=125$) different morphologies develop; at high eccentricities of impact (0.95), threads will appear; triangular sheets or webs form at eccentricities close to 0.9 and as one jet moves closer to the center of the other one first partial/incomplete fishbones appear and eventually periodically-dancing fishbones develop.

Pattern formation in coiling of falling viscous threads: Revisiting the geometric model

Abstract:The "Fluid Mechanic Sewing Machine" creates periodic patterns through the coiling nature of a viscous fluid falling onto a moving surface. At relatively moderate heights, the reported patterns are translating coiling, alternating loops, W pattern, and meander. A simplified theoretical model based on the geometry and local bending of the contact point can predict these patterns. We experimentally explore the patterns in this region by collecting new data to compare with the model. Our review of the model's bifurcation diagram reveals additional patterns beyond the ones reported, although current experiments have not shown their existence. The W pattern, previously omitted in a regime diagram because of its small region, is now shown explicitly. We report on the consistent appearance of a period-doubled version of the W pattern, as well as rare appearances of resonant patterns, both reported for the first time. Comparing the theoretical model to experimental data, we find that the predicted phase diagram and the meander variation deviate from observations. These deviations hint at an unaccounted dynamics that merits further study.

Abstract:In this work, the dynamics of bubble formation in a highly viscous liquid in a co-flowing microfluidic device is experimentally investigated. The evolution of gaseous thread in the co-flowing device is recorded using a high-speed camera. The bubble formation process can be divided into three stages: retraction stage, expansion stage, and collapse stage. According to an analysis of the forces acting on the gaseous thread, the bubble formation in the co-flowing device is a competitive result of the surface tension, pressure difference and shearing effects. The surface tension effect plays an important role in the retraction stage. In the expansion stage, the pressure difference effect dominates the bubble's growth. While in the collapse stage, the shearing effect leads to the interface breakup. Three empirical correlations are proposed according to the experimental data and can be used to predict bubble formation frequency, the diameter and length of the generated bubbles.

Abstract:This is a fluid dynamics video submitted to the Gallery of Fluid Motion of the 63rd Annual Meeting of the American Physical Society Division of Fluid Dynamics. We examine the Landau-Levich flow of a suspension of neutrally buoyant particles within a rotating glass cylinder. This differs from previously investigated systems in that we deal with macroscopic particles which immediately exceed the thickness of the deposited liquid film. Thus, the presence of particles on the liquid-coated wall creates excess surface area, leading to a capillary attraction between particles. In turn, this capillary attraction induces phase separation of the suspension coating into regions of either dense particle clustering or clear liquid.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the heat transfer in the fully developed flow of a viscoelastic fluid, a slag layer, down a vertical wall. A new constitutive relation for the stress tensor of this fluid is proposed, where the viscosity depends on the volume fraction, temperature, and shear rate. For the heat flux vector, we assume the Fourier's law of conduction with a constant thermal conductivity. The model is also capable of exhibiting normal stress effects. The governing equations are non‐dimensionalized and numerically solved to study the effects of various dimensionless parameters on the velocity, temperature, and volume fraction. The effect of the exponent in the Reynolds viscosity model is also discussed. The different cases of shear‐thinning and shear‐thickening, cooling and heating, are compared and discussed. The results indicate that the viscous dissipation and radiation (at the free surface) cause the temperature to be higher inside the flow domain. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:A thin thread of viscous fluid falling onto a moving belt generates a surprising variety of patterns depending on the belt speed, fall height, flow rate, and fluid properties. Here we simulate this experiment numerically using the Discrete Viscous Threads method that can predict the non-steady dynamics of thin viscous filaments, capturing the combined effects of inertia, stretching, bending and twisting. Our simulations successfully reproduce nine out of ten different patterns previously seen in the laboratory, and agree closely with the experimental phase diagram of Morris et al.\ (2008). We propose a new classification of the patterns based on the Fourier spectra of the longitudinal and transverse motion of the point of contact of the thread with the belt. These frequencies appear to be locked in most cases to simple ratios of the frequency $\Omega_c$ of steady coiling obtained in the limit of zero belt speed. In particular the intriguing `alternating loops' pattern is produced by combining the first five multiples of $\Omega_c/3$.

Abstract:In this fluid dynamics video we explore an array of different possible dynamics for a flexible filament sedimenting in a viscous fluid. The time-dependent shapes and trajectories of the filament are determined analytically and numerically by balancing viscous, elastic and gravitational forces in a slender-body theory for zero-Reynolds number flows. The dynamics are characterized by a single dimensionless elasto-gravitation number. The video shows the process of filament relaxation and reorientation, the formation of particle clouds, and finally a buckling instability.

Abstract:Many types of dense suspensions are complex materials exhibiting both solid-like and fluid-like behavior. These suspensions are usually considered to behave as non-Newtonian fluids and the rheological characteristics such as yield stress, thixotropy and shear-thinning/thickening can have significant impact on the flow and the engineering applications of these materials. Therefore, it is important to understand the rheological features of these fluids. In this paper, we study the flow of a nonlinear fluid which exhibits yield stress and shear-thinning effects. The geometries of interests are a straight channel, a channel with a crevice and a pipe with a contraction; we assume the fluid behaves as a Herschel-Bulkley fluid. The numerical simulations indicate that for flows with low Reynolds number and high Bingham number an unyielded plug may form in the center of the channel. In the case of a channel with a crevice, the fluid in the deep portion of the crevice is at an extremely high level of viscosity, forming a plug which is hard to yield. For the pipe with a contraction, near the pipe neck the unyielded region is smaller due to the enhanced flow disturbance.

Stability and breakup of liquid threads and annular layers in a corrugated tube

Abstract:We study the stability and breakup behavior of an axisymmetric liquid thread which is surrounded by another viscous fluid layer through a long wave approximation. The two fluids are immiscible and confined in a concentrically placed cylindrical tube. The effect of the tube wall corrugation is taken into account in the model, which allows the access of the interaction between the wall shape and the thread interfacial dynamics. The linearized system is studied by the Floquet theory due to the presence of non-constant coefficients in the equation and the spectrum is computed numerically via the Fourier-Floquet-Hill method. The resulting features agree qualitatively with those obtained based on a lubrication model in the thin annulus limit, where the short-wave disturbances that would be stabilizing owing to the capillarity in the absence of wall corrugation, can excite some unstable long waves. Those results from the linear theory are also confirmed numerically by the direct numerical simulation on the evolution equations. Meanwhile, a transition on the dominant modes from the one for a tube without corrugation to the one with wall shape included is found. Finally the drop formation is shown in the nonlinear regime when the pinch off of the core thread is obtained. The annular film drainage regime is also approached slowly along with pinching when the tube wall is close to the thread interface. In addition, our results demonstrate the possibility to suppress pinching, depending on the averaged annular layer thickness and the variation in tube radius.

Abstract:A cylindrical liquid thread readily destabilizes into a series of drops due to capillary instability, which is also responsible for undesirable bead-on-fibre structures observed when coating a thin fibre. In this experimental study, we show how a falling liquid thread can be stabilized by internally distorting the cross-sectional shape using two vertically hung fibres. Below a critical flow rate , the dual-fibre system deforms the falling thread into a smooth column with a non-circular cross-section, thereby suppressing instability. Above , the cylindrical thread is left undeformed by the fibres and destabilizes into beads connected by a stable, non-cylindrical film. An empirical stability threshold is identified showing that flow delays the onset of capillary instability when compared with a marginally stable quasi-static coating. When the flow is unstable , the bead velocity obeys a simple scaling law that is well supported by our experiments over a large parameter range. This suppression technique can be extended to other slender geometries, such as a ribbon, which shows similar qualitative results but exhibits a different stability threshold due to spontaneous dewetting about its short edge.

Abstract:We present evidence revealing that an object with specific properties can exhibit multiple stable falling postures at low Reynolds numbers. By scrutinizing the force equilibrium relationship of a fixed object at various attack angles and Reynolds numbers, we introduce a methodology that can obtain the stable falling postures of the object. This method saves computational resources and more intuitively presents the results in the full parameter domain. Our findings are substantiated by free-fall tests conducted through both physical experiments and numerical simulations, which validate the existence of multiple stable solutions in accordance with the interpolation results obtained with fixed objects. Additionally, we quantify the abundance and distribution patterns of stable falling postures for a diverse range of representative shapes. This discovery highlights the existence of multiple stable solutions that are universally present across objects of different shapes. The implications of this research extend to the design, stability control and trajectory prediction of all free and controlled flights in both air and water.

Viscous fingering in a yield stress fluid

Abstract:We study the Saffman-Taylor or viscous fingering instability in yield stress fluids. The theory for yield stress fluids shows that the dispersion equation of the instability is similar to that for Newtonian fluids; however, the capillary number governing the instability now contains the yield stress. Experiments using gels and foams reveal very branched fingers in the gel. The results are in excellent agreement with theory for the gel, with, in addition, a crossover from yield stress dominated to viscous behavior. The results for foams are very different due to the existence of wall slip.

Abstract:This fluid dynamics video presents experiments and simulations of gravity-driven particulate jets in viscous fluids at low Reynolds number. An initially straight jet is shown to develop varicose modulations of its diameter as it sediments under the action of gravity. While this instability is qualitatively reminiscent of the classical Rayleigh-Plateau instability for immiscible fluids, its mechanism has yet to be understood as neither inertia nor surface tension play a role in the case of a dilute suspension at Re=0.

Abstract:We study experimentally the dynamics of one and two ball-chains settling under gravity in a very viscous fluid at a Reynolds number much smaller than unity. We demonstrate that single ball-chains in most cases do not tend to be planar and often rotate, not keeping the ends at the same horizontal level. Shorter ball-chains usually form shapes resembling distorted U, and longer ones in the early stage of the evolution form a shape resembling distorted W, and later deform non-symmetrically and significantly out of plane. This behaviour is reproduced in our numerical simulations for a single very elastic filament, with the use of the bead model and multipole expansion of the Stokes equations, corrected for lubrication and implemented in the precise Hydromultipole numerical codes. In our experiments, two ball-chains, initially one above the other, later move away or approach each other, for a larger or smaller initial distance, respectively.
