Abstract:A rack shadow is a set X with a rack action by a rack R, analogous to a vector space over a field. We use shadow colorings of classical link diagrams to define enhanced rack counting invariants and show that the enhanced invariants are stronger than unenhanced counting invariants.

Abstract:We introduce an associative algebra Z[X,S] associated to a birack shadow and define enhancements of the birack counting invariant for classical knots and links via representations of Z[X,S] known as shadow modules. We provide examples which demonstrate that the shadow module enhanced invariants are not determined by the Alexander polynomial or the unenhanced birack counting invariants.

Abstract:In this paper we study some algebraic properties of the rack structure as well as the representation theory of it, following the ideas given by M. Elhamdadi and E. M. Moutuou in \cite{Elhamdadi}. We establish a correspondence between the irreducible strong representations of a finite and connected rack with the irreducible representation of its finite enveloping group which allows to use techniques of the latter topic in the other setting.

Abstract:A rack is a set with a binary operation such that left multiplications are automorphisms of the set and a quandle is a rack satisfying a certain condition. Let $S$ be a subset of a finite group $G$ which is closed under the conjugation operation $a\triangleright b := aba^{-1}$. The set $S$ with the conjugation operation $\triangleright$ is a quandle. We call those objects \emph{conjugation racks}. The prime examples are \begin{itemize} \item the group rack $(G,\triangleright)$, \item the conjugacy class rack $(C,\triangleright)$, where $C$ is a conjugacy class in $G$, and \item the $p$-power rack $(G_p,\triangleright)$, where $p$ is a prime and $G_p$ is the set of all elements in $G$ whose order is a power of $p$. \end{itemize} The set of all subracks of a finite rack form a lattice under inclusion. In this paper we study the subrack lattices of the conjugation racks. In particular, we show that the subrack lattice can be associated with a subposet of a partition lattice as well as with a subposet of an integer partition lattice in a canonical way if the rack is connected. And, if the rack is not connected, the study of the homotopy properties of the subrack lattice can be reduced into the study of the homotopy properties of the subposet of parabolic subracks. We also prove that for a certain class of $p$-power racks the order of a Sylow $p$-subgroup divides the reduced Euler characteristic of the subrack lattice of the $p$-power rack. This statement can be considered as the rack analogue of a result by Brown in the field of subgroup complexes regarding the Euler characteristic of the poset of nontrivial $p$-subgroups of a group.

Abstract:We introduce and investigate a natural family of metrics on connected components of a rack. The metrics are closely related to certain bi-invariant metrics on the group of inner automorphisms of the rack. We also introduce a bounded cohomology of racks and quandles, relate them to the above metrics and prove a certain vanishing result for racks and quandles with amenable group of inner automorphisms.

The rack congruence condition and half congruences in racks

Abstract:Racks and quandles are algebraic structures with a single binary operation that is right self-distributive and right invertible, and additionally idempotent in the case of quandles. The invertibility condition is equivalent to the existence of a second binary operation that acts as a right inverse to the first, so that racks and quandles may also be viewed as algebraic structures with a pair of (dependent) binary operations. When forming a quotient rack or quandle it is necessary to take this two-operation view, and define a congruence as an equivalence relation on the rack or quandle that respects both operations. However, in defining a congruence some authors have omitted the condition on the inverse operation, and defined a congruence as an equivalence relation respecting the primary operation only. We show that while respecting the primary operation is sufficient in the case of finite racks and quandles, it is not in general sufficient in the infinite case. We do this by constructing explicit examples of "half congruences": equivalence relations that respect exactly one of the two operations. Our work also allows us to completely characterise congruences in connected Alexander quandles.

Biracks: a notational proposal and applications

Abstract:I propose a notation for biracks that includes from the begining the knowledege of the associated (or underlying, or derived) rack structure. Motivated by results of Rump in the involutive case, this notation allows to generalize some results from involutive case to the non necessarily involutive solutions, and also to view some twisting constructions and its relation to the underlying rack structure in a more transparent way. Two applications are given.

Abstract:A generalised Legendrian rack is a rack equipped with a Legendrian structure, which is a pair of maps encoding the information of Legendrian Reidemeister moves together with up and down cusps in the front diagram of an oriented Legendrian link. Employing a purely rack theoretic approach, we associate a generalised Legendrian rack (or a GL-rack) to an oriented Legendrian link, and prove that it is an invariant under Legendrian isotopy. As immediate applications, we prove that this invariant distinguishes infinitely many oriented Legendrian unknots and oriented Legendrian trefoils. To comprehend their algebraic structure, we prove that every GL-rack admits a homogeneous representation. Further, using the idea of trunks, we define modules over GL-racks, and prove the equivalence of the category of GL-rack modules and the category of Beck modules over a fixed GL-rack.

Abstract:A spatial surface is a compact surface embedded in the 3-sphere. In this paper, we provide several typical examples of spatial surfaces and construct a coloring invariant to distinguish them. The coloring is defined by using a multiple group rack, which is a rack version of a multiple conjugation quandle.

Abstract:The notion of stochastic shadowing property is introduced. Relations to stochastic stability and standard shadowing are studied. Using tent map as an example it is proved that, in contrast to what happens for standard shadowing, there are significantly non-uniformly hyperbolic systems that satisfy stochastic shadowing property.

Abstract:We study three notions of shadowing: classical shadowing, limit (or asymptotic) shadowing, and s-limit shadowing. We show that classical and s-limit shadowing coincide for tent maps and, more generally, for piecewise linear interval maps with constant slopes, and are further equivalent to the linking property introduced by Chen in 1991. We also construct a system which exhibits shadowing but not limit shadowing, and we study how shadowing properties transfer to maximal transitive subsystems and inverse limits (sometimes called natural extensions). Where practicable, we show that our results are best possible by means of examples.

Abstract:A spatial surface is a compact surface embedded in the $3$-sphere. We assume that each connected component has non-empty boundary. Spatial surfaces are represented by diagrams of spatial trivalent graphs. In this paper, we introduce the notion of a groupoid rack, which is an algebraic structure that can be used for colorings of diagrams of oriented spatial surfaces. Furthermore, we show that the groupoid rack has a universal property on colorings for diagrams of spatial surfaces.

Abstract:We provide an alternative view of some results in [1, 3, 11]. In particular, we prove that (1) if a continuous self-map of a compact metric space has the shadowing, then the union of the basins of terminal chain components is a dense $G_\delta$-subset of the space; and (2) if a continuous self-map of a locally connected compact metric space has the shadowing, and if the chain recurrent set is totally disconnected, then the map is almost chain continuous.

Abstract:This paper initiates the study of invariants of links associated to infinite-dimensional representations of $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ using graphical representation for quantum $6j$-symbols, the shadow world. We obtain formulae for $q3j$-symbols and $q6j$-symbols for Verma modules and study their properties. This hints at the structure of the possible target category for Reshetikhin-Turaev functor for such an invariant.

Periodicity shadows I: A new approach to combinatorics of periodic algebras

Abstract:This article is devoted to introduce a new notion of periodicity shadow, which appeared naturally in the study of combinatorics of tame symmetric algebras of period four, or more generally, algebras of generalized quaternion type. For any such an algebra $\La$, we consider its shadow $\bS_\La$, which is the (signed) adjacency matrix of the Gabriel quiver of $\La$. Studying properties of shadows $\bS_\La$ leads us to the definition of the periodicity shadow, which is basically, a skew-symmetric integer matrix satisfying certain set of conditions motivated by the properties of shadows $\bS_\La$. This turned out to be a very useful tool in describing the combinatorics of Gabriel quivers of algebras of generalized quaternion type, not only for algebras with small Gabriel quivers (i.e. up to $6$ vertices), which it was originally desined for. In this paper, we introduce and briefly discuss this notion and present one of its theoretical applications, which shows how significant it is. Namely, the main result of this paper describes the global shape of the Gabriel quivers of algebras of generalized quaternion type, as quivers obtained from some basic shadows by attaching $2$-cycles, and moreover, postion of the $2$-cycles is restricted by precise rules (see the Main Theorem). Computational aspects are reported in the second part.

Abstract:We look at the preservation of various notions of shadowing in discrete dynamical systems under inverse limits, products, factor maps and the induced maps for symmetric products and hyperspaces. The shadowing properties we consider are the following: shadowing, h-shadowing, eventual shadowing, orbital shadowing, strong orbital shadowing, the first and second weak shadowing properties, limit shadowing, s-limit shadowing, orbital limit shadowing and inverse shadowing.

Abstract:Shadows for bicategories, defined by Ponto, provide a useful framework that generalizes classical and topological Hochschild homology. In this paper, we define Hochschild-type invariants for monoids in a symmetric monoidal, simplicial model category $\mathsf V$, as well as for small $\mathsf V$-categories. We show that each of these constructions extends to a shadow on an appropriate bicategory, which implies in particular that they are Morita invariant. We also define a generalized theory of Hochschild homology twisted by an automorphism and show that it is Morita invariant. Hochschild homology of Green functors and $C_n$-twisted topological Hochschild homology fit into this framework, which allows us to conclude that these theories are Morita invariant. We also study linearization maps relating the topological and algebraic theories, proving that the linearization map for topological Hochschild homology arises as a lax shadow functor, and constructing a new linearization map relating topological restriction homology and algebraic restriction homology. Finally, we construct a twisted Dennis trace map from the fixed points of equivariant algebraic $K$-theory to twisted topological Hochschild homology.

Abstract:Let $f\colon X\to X$ be a continuous function on a compact metric space. We show that shadowing is equivalent to backwards shadowing and two-sided shadowing when the map $f$ is onto. Using this we go on to show that, for expansive surjective maps the properties shadowing, two-sided shadowing, s-limit shadowing and two-sided s-limit shadowing are equivalent. We show that $f$ is positively expansive and has shadowing if and only if it has unique shadowing (i.e.\ each pseudo-orbit is shadowed by a unique point), extending a result implicit in Walter's proof that positively expansive maps with shadowing are topologically stable. We use the aforementioned result on two-sided shadowing to find an equivalent characterisation of shadowing and expansivity and extend these results to the notion of $n$-expansivity due to Morales.

Abstract:We study families $\mathcal{F}\subseteq 2^{[n]}$ with restricted intersections and prove a conjecture of Snevily in a stronger form for large $n$. We also obtain stability results for Kleitman's isodiametric inequality and families with bounded set-wise differences. Our proofs introduce a new twist to the classical linear algebra method, harnessing the non-shadows of $\mathcal{F}$, which may be of independent interest.

Abstract:A natural oriented (2k+2)-chain in CP^{2k+1} with boundary twice RP^{2k+1}, its complex shade, is constructed. Via intersection numbers with the shade, a new invariant, the shade number of k-dimensional subvarieties with normal vector fields along their real part, is introduced. For an even-dimensional real variety, the shade number and the Euler number of the complement of the normal vector field in the real normal bundle of its real part agree. For an odd- dimensional orientable real variety, a linear combination of the shade number and the wrapping number (self-linking number) of its real part is independent of the normal vector field and equals the encomplexed writhe as defined by Viro. Shade numbers of varieties without real points and encomplexed writhes of odd- dimensional real varieties are, in a sense, Vassiliev invariants of degree 1. Complex shades of odd-dimensional spheres are constructed. Shade numbers of real subvarieties in spheres have properties analogous to those of their projective counterparts.
