Abstract:We give two proofs of the identity $$\sqrt{\frac{\cos\frac{2\pi}{5}} {\cos\frac{\pi}{5}}}+\sqrt{\frac{\cos\frac{\pi}{5}} {\cos\frac{2\pi}{5}} }=\sqrt{5},$$ using and not using the gold ratio.

Abstract:We find an interesting relationship between the golden ratio, the Moebius function, the Euler totient function and the natural logarithm - central players in the theory of numbers. A number of identities involving the golden ratio and its reciprocal are proved, including an expression for the base of the natural logarithm. The theorem and corollaries highlight a connection between the golden ratio and the factorization of integers that is not obvious; and display a sort of inverse relationship between the Moebius function and Euler totient function.

Abstract:In a recent paper Vinay, Shweta, and Harshitha use Ramanujan's theta functions to prove several trigonometric equalities. Elementary proofs for some of these equalities were given by the author and Zeilberger, then for all but one by Berndt, Kim, and Zaharescu. The remaining equality was proved in the same paper of Berndt, Kim, and Zaharescu in a non-totally elementary way, in that it uses a result of Gauss in cyclotomy: here we give an elementary proof of the same equality. Also we show how to use automated tools to discover and prove some generalizations.

Abstract:The golden ratio is usually shrouded in mystique and mystery, however, showing its emergence from a familiar geometric setting makes it a more natural phenomenon. In this work, we present a new theorem connecting the Tangent Secant theorem to the golden ratio. Such a connection enhances the learning process of the theorem, and it demystifies the golden ratio in physics and other disciplines.

Abstract:In this paper we obtain a new curious identity involving trigonometric functions. Namely, for any positive odd integer $n$ we prove that $$\sum_{k=1}^n(-1)^k(\cot kx)\sin k(n-k)x=\frac{1-n}2,$$ which is equivalent to the identity $$\sum_{k=1}^n(-1)^kU_{n-k}(\cos kx)=-\frac{n+1}2,$$ where $U_m(z)$ stands for the $m$th Chebyshev polynomial of the second kind. As a consequence, for any positive odd integer $n$ and positive integer $m$ we obtain $$\sum_{k=1}^n(-1)^kk^{2m}B_{2m+1}\left(\frac{n-k}2\right)=0,$$ where $B_j(x)$ denotes the Bernoulli polynomial of degree $j$.

An Exact Connection between π and the Golden Ratio φ

Abstract:This article establishes a geometrical and mathematical bridge between the universal constant π  and the golden ratio φ  by interrelating the construction of the area of a circle using two approaches: one formed using the rotation of a regular unit pentagon and the other one from the rotation of its inverse ― the pentagram of side reference φ . The mathematical end result is a linear expression of π  as a function of φ . As an interesting side result, an expression for the area of a circle is derived based on the golden ratio φ  and a geometrically motivated coefficient. A scripted program for the verification of the derived expressions is provided.

Abstract:This note is about the observation that the various transition formulas between bases of trigonometric polynomials can be expressed in terms binomial coefficients. More specifically, we write the entries of the Chebyshev matrices $ T$ and $ U$ in terms of binomial coefficients. We remark that the inverses of certain submatrices of the Chebyshev matrix $ T$ correspond to classical power reduction formulas for trigonometric functions. Therefore the entries of $ T^{-1}$ are expressible in terms of binomial coefficients and powers of two. The inverses of certain submatrices of the Chebyshev matrix $ U$ appear in power reduction formulas involving the Catalan triangles. We could not spot them in the literature. As a corollary the Catalan triangles are interpreted as inverses of rather natural matrices of binomial coefficients. We explain the matrix inversions in terms of Riordan arrays. We solve the integral $ \int _{0}^{2\pi }\cos^{2m}( x)\sin^{2n}( x) dx$ and deduce a hypergeometric identity from the Fourier expansion of $\cos^{2m}(x)$ and $ \sin^{2n}( x)$. As a corollary we prove that super Catalan numbers are integers. We emphasize that from the point of view of these base changes between the trigonometric polynomials it is more natural to work with $2\cos(x)$ and $2\sin(x)$ instead of $\cos(x)$ and $\sin(x)$, since the transition matrices become invertible over the integers. We do a similar analysis for the spread polynomials. This enables us to make a conjecture of Goh and Wildberger more precise. In this exposition we give a mostly self-contained account of the matter, the prerequisites just being four semesters of calculus, linear algebra, elementary complex variables and the residue theorem.

Inequalities for trigonometric sums

Abstract:We present several new inequalities for trigonometric sums. Among others, we show that the inequality $$ \sum_{k=1}^n (n-k+1)(n-k+2)k\sin(kx) > \frac{2}{9} \sin(x) \bigl( 1+2\cos(x) \bigr)^2 $$ holds for all $n\geq 1$ and $x\in (0, 2\pi/3)$. The constant factor $2/9$ is sharp. This refines the classical Szegö-Schweitzer inequality which states that the sine sum is positive for all $n\geq 1$ and $x\in (0,2 \pi/3)$. Moreover, as an application of one of our results, we obtain a two-parameter class of absolutely monotonic functions.

Abstract:In this paper, we obtain some novel identities involving trigonometric functions. Let n be any positive odd integer. We mainly show that Sigma(n-1)(r=0) 1/1 + sin 2 pi x+r/n + cos 2 pi x+r/n = (-1)(n-1)/2n 1 + (-1)(n-1)/2 sin 2px + cos 2px for any complex number with x + 1/2, x + (-1)((n-1)/2)/4 is not an element of Z, and Sigma(n-1)(j,k=0) 1/sin 2 pi x+j/n + sin 2 pi y+k/n = (-1)((n-1)/2)n(2)/sin2 pi x + sin2 pi y for all complex numbers x and y with x+y, x- y- 1/2 is not an element of Z. We also determine the values of Pi((p-1)/2)(k=1)(1 + tan pi k(2)/p) and Pi((p-1)/2)(k=1) (1 + cot pi k(2)/p) for any odd prime p. In addition, we pose several conjectures on the values of Pi((p-1)/2)(k=1)(x- e(2 pi ik2)/p) with p an odd prime and x a root of unity.

Abstract:Although many series exist for $\pi$ and $\pi^2$, very few are known for $\pi^3$. In this article, we derive, using a trigonometric identity obtained by Euler, two representations of $\pi^3$ involving infinite sums and the golden ratio. The methodology can be generalized in order to obtain further series, relating by the way $\pi^3$ to other mathematical constants.

An Algebraic Approach to the Goldbach and Polignac Conjectures

Abstract:This paper will give both the necessary and sufficient conditions required to find a counter-example to the Goldbach Conjecture by using an algebraic approach where no knowledge of the gaps between prime numbers is needed. To eliminate ambiguity the set of natural numbers, $\mathbb{N}$, will include zero throughout this paper. It will be shown there exists a counter-example to the Goldbach Conjecture, given by $2a$ where $a \in \mathbb{N}_{> 3}$, if and only if for each prime $p_i < a$ there exists some unique $q_i, \alpha_i \in \mathbb{N}$ where $a < q_i < 2a$ and $2a = q_i + p_i$ along with the condition that $\prod_{i = 1}^{\pi(a)}q_i = \prod_{i = 1}^{\pi(a)}p_i^{\alpha_i}$. A substitution of $q_i = 2a - p_i$ for each $q_i$ from each sum gives the product relationship $\prod_{i = 1}^{\pi(a)}(2a - p_i) = \prod_{i = 1}^{\pi(a)}p_i^{\alpha_i}$. Therefore, if a counter-example exists to the Goldbach Conjecture, then there exists a mapping $\mathcal{G}_-:\mathbb{C} \to \mathbb{C}$ where $$\mathcal{G}_-(z) = \prod_{i = 1}^{\pi(a)}(z - p_i) - \prod_{i = 1}^{\pi(a)}p_i^{\alpha_i}$$ and $\mathcal{G}_-(2a) = 0$. A proof of the Goldbach Conjecture will be given utilizing Hensel's Lemma to show $2a$ must be of the form $2a = p_i^{\alpha_i} + p_i$ for all primes up to $a$ when $a > 3$. However, this leads to contradiction since $2a < a\#$ for all $a > 4$. A similar method will be employed to give the necessary and sufficient conditions when an even number is not the difference of two primes with one prime being less than that even number. These proofs will have implications for proving the Polignac Conjecture.

Abstract:In this paper, we present an explicit and analytic proof for still unproven Goldbach's strong conjecture. To derive this proof, we first define a heuristic model for representing even numbers called Semi-continuous Model for Even Numbers or briefly S.C.E Model, and then we employ this model along with using the inequality \begin{center} $\dfrac{x}{\ln x}\leq_{x\geq 17}\pi(x)\leq_{x>1}1.2251\dfrac{x}{\ln x}$, \end{center} where $\pi(x)$ denotes the number of all primes smaller than and equal to $x$, and is presented by Pierre Dusart in his paper [P. Dusart, \textit{Explicit estimates of some functions over primes}, Ramanujan J. \textbf{45} (2016), No. 1, 227--251]. On the one hand, this proof is given for all even numbers $E\geq22864$. On the other hand, since the assertion of Goldbach's strong conjecture is easy to verify for all even numbers $4\leq E<22864$, we turn this conjecture into a theorem.

A Curious Trigonometric Infinite Product in Context

Abstract:By treating the multiple argument identity of the logarithm of the Gamma function as a functional equation, we obtain a curious infinite product representation of the $sinc$ function in terms of the cotangent function. This result is believed to be new. It is then shown how to convert the infinite product to a finite product, which turns out to be a simple telescoping of the double angle $sin$ function. In general, this result unifies known infinite product identities involving various trigonometric functions when the product term index appears as an exponent. In one unusual case, what appears to be a straightforward limit, suggests a counterexample to Weierstrass' factor theorem. A resolution is offered. An Appendix presents the general solution to a simple functional equation. This work is motivated by its educational interest.

Abstract:We consider the well-known characterization of the Golden ratio as limit of the ratio of consecutive terms of the Fibonacci sequence, and we give an explanation of this property in the framework of the Difference Equations Theory. We show that the Golden ratio coincides with this limit not because it is the root with maximum modulus and multiplicity of the characteristic polynomial, but, from a more general point of view, because it is the root with maximum modulus and multiplicity of a restricted set of roots, which in this special case coincides with the two roots of the characteristic polynomial. This new perspective is the heart of the characterization of the limit of ratio of consecutive terms of all linear homogeneous recurrences with constant coefficients, without any assumption on the roots of the characteristic polynomial, which may be, in particular, also complex and not real.

Abstract:We derive interesting arctangent identities involving the golden ratio, Fibonacci numbers and Lucas numbers. Binary BBP-type formulas for the arctangents of certain odd powers of the golden ratio are also derived, for the first time in the literature. Finally we derive golden-ratio-base BBP-type formulas for some mathematical constants, including $\pi$, $\log 2$, $\log\phi$ and $\sqrt 2\,\arctan\sqrt 2$. The $\phi-$nary BBP-type formulas derived here are considerably simpler than similar results contained in earlier literature.
