Abstract:Galaxies represent the visible fabric of the Universe and there has been considerable progress recently in both observational and theoretical studies. The underlying goal is to understand the present-day diversity of galaxy forms, masses and luminosities in the context of theories for the growth of structure. Popular models predict the bulk of the galaxy population assembled recently, in apparent agreement with optical and near-infrared observations. However, detailed conclusions rely crucially on the choice of the cosmological parameters. Although the star formation history has been sketched to early times, uncertainties remain, particularly in connecting to the underlying mass assembly rate. I discuss the expected progress in determining the cosmological parameters and address the question of which observations would most accurately check contemporary models for the origin of the Hubble sequence. The new generation of ground-based and future space-based large telescopes, equipped with instrumentation appropriate for studying the resolved properties of distant galaxies, offer the potential of substantial progress in this field.

A q-product tutorial for a q-series MAPLE package

Abstract:This is a tutorial for using a new q-series Maple package. The package includes facilities for conversion between q-series and q-products and finding algebraic relations between q-series. Andrews found an algorithm for converting a q-series into a product. We provide an implementation. As an application we are able to effectively find finite q-product factorisations when they exist thus answering a question of Andrews. We provide other applications involving factorisations into theta functions and eta products.

Abstract:We have made a lot of progress in the study of the MW. In spite of this, much of our Galaxy remains unknown, and amazing breakthroughs await to be made in the exploration of the far side of the Galaxy. Focussing on the Galactic extinction horizon problem with current surveys like the Two Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS) and the Vista Variables in the Via Lactea Survey (VVV) and its extension VVVX, the extinction horizon is a fundamental difficulty, and it is my intention here to reveal how profound is our ignorance, and also to try to suggest ways for improvement with future near-IR Galactic surveys.

Abstract:We review recent developments in theoretical studies of galaxy formation and evolution. In combination with new data from HST, Keck and other large telescopes, numerical and semi-analytic modelling is beginning to build up a coherent picture of galaxy formation. We summarize the current status of modelling of various galactic properties such as the structure of dark matter halos, the galaxy luminosity function, the Tully-Fisher relation, the colour-magnitude relation for ellipticals, the gross morphological properties of galaxies and the counts of faint galaxies as a function of magnitude, redshift and morphology. Many of these properties can be explained, at least at some level, within a broad class of CDM cosmologies, but a number of fundamental issues remain unresolved. We use our semi-analytic model of galaxy formation to interpret the evolutionary status of the Lyman-break galaxies at $z\simeq 3-3.5$ recently discovered by Steidel et al. The abundance and global properties of these objects are compatible with model predictions in a variety of CDM cosmologies, including the standard version. All these models predict mild evolution in the distribution of star formation rates which peaks at around $z\simeq 1$, but is never much larger than it is at present. The Steidel et al. Lyman-break galaxies are among the very first objects in which appreciable star formation is taking place; they thus signal the onset of galaxy formation. We present three example evolutionary histories of Lyman-break galaxies which illustrate that these objects are the precursors of present day, normal, bright ellipticals and spirals.

Abstract:A critical discourse is provided on the current status of the astrophysics of galaxies in view of open fundamental questions on the law of gravitation and the physics-driven variation of the galaxy-wide stellar initial mass function (GWIMF). The Einstein/Newtonian plus cold or warm dark-matter-based models face many significant but unresolved tensions (e.g. planes of satellites, the highly organised and symmetrical structure of the Local Group, the local Gpc-scale void). The accumulating nature of these indicates quite compellingly the need for a different theoretical framework. An example is the prediction, made in 1997, of the existence of satellite galaxies with near-exact properties to the Hercules dwarf spheroidal satellite galaxy discovered in 2007 if it is a tidal dwarf galaxy void of dark matter. Such results indicate that once the evidence is accepted that dark matter particles have no role in galaxies with gravitation being effectively Milgromian, then the resulting theoretical understanding of galaxies becomes much simpler and highly predictive with remarkable successes. Along with these scientific advancements, the recent observational data solidify the existence of one of the most important relations in star-formation theory, namely the mmax-Mecl relation. The data rule out stochastic star formation and confirm that the IMF becomes increasingly top-heavy with increasing star-formation rate density. Galaxies and their embedded-star-cluster building blocks are therefore self-regulated dynamical systems which are computationally accessible. Finding a theory for the formation of galaxies involves the development of a new cosmological model, which may differ substantially from the dark-matter based one. Very significant new opportunities have thus emerged for inquisitive and daring researchers which may appear risky now but almost certainly lead to major breakthroughs.

Abstract:Star clusters and their stellar populations play a significant role in the context of galaxy evolution, across space (from local to high redshift) and time (from currently forming to fossil remnants). We are now within reach of answering a number of fundamental questions that will have a significant impact on our understanding of key open issues in contemporary astrophysics, ranging from the formation, assembly and evolution of galaxies to the details of the star-formation process. Our improved understanding of the physics driving star cluster formation and evolution has led to the emergence of crucial new open questions that will most likely be tackled in a systematic way in the next decade.

Abstract:Galaxies, in particular disc galaxies, contain a number of structures and substructures with well defined morphological, photometric and kinematic properties. Considerable theoretical effort has been put into explaining their formation and evolution, both analytically and with numerical simulations. In some theories, structures form during the natural evolution of the galaxy, i.e. they are a result of nature. For others, it is the interaction with other galaxies, or with the intergalactic medium -- i.e. nurture -- that accounts for a structure. Either way, the existence and properties of these structures reveal important information on the underlying potential of the galaxy, i.e. on the amount and distribution of matter -- including the dark matter -- in it, and on the evolutionary history of the galaxy. Here, I will briefly review the various formation scenarios and the respective role of nature and nurture in the formation, evolution and properties of the main structures and substructures.

A nearby galaxy perspective on interstellar dust properties and their evolution

Abstract:Interstellar dust is a key physical ingredient of galaxies, obscuring star formation, regulating the heating and cooling of the gas, and building-up chemical complexity. In this manuscript, I give a wide review of interstellar dust properties and some of the modern techniques used to study it. I start with a general introduction presenting the main concepts, in molecular and solid-state physics, required to understand the contemporary literature on the subject. I then review the empirical evidence we currently use to constrain state-of-the-art dust models. Follows a long discussion about our current understanding of the grain properties of nearby galaxies, with an emphasis on the results from spectral energy distribution modeling. The following chapter presents dust evolution at all scales. I review the different microphysical evolution processes, and the way they are accounted for in cosmic dust evolution models. I give my take on the origin of interstellar dust in galaxies of different metallicities. The last chapter focusses on methodology. I give an introduction to the Bayesian method and compare it to frequentist techniques. I discuss the epistemological consequences of the two approaches, and show why the field of interstellar dust requires a probabilistic viewpoint. I end the manuscript with a summary of the major breakthroughs achieved in the past decade, and delineate a few prospectives for the next decade.

Abstract:Due to the inherently nonlinear nature of gravity cosmological N-body simulations have become an invaluable tool when the growth of structure is being studied and modelled closer to the present epoch. Large simulations with high dynamical range have made it possible to model the formation and growth of cosmic structure with unprecedented accuracy. Moreover, galaxies, the basic building blocks of the Universe, can also be modelled in cosmological context. However, despite all the simulations and successes in recent decades, there are still many unanswered questions in the field of galaxy formation and evolution. One of the longest standing issue being the significance of the formation place and thus initial conditions to a galaxy's evolution in respect to environment, often formulated simply as "nature versus nurture" like in human development and psychology. Unfortunately, our understanding of galaxy evolution in different environments is still limited, albeit, for example, the morphology-density relation has shown that the density of the galaxy's local environment can affect its properties. Consequently, the environment should play a role in galaxy evolution, however despite the efforts, the exact role of the galaxy's local environment to its evolution remains open. This thesis introduction discusses briefly the background cosmology, cosmological N-body simulations and semi-analytical models. The second part is reserved for groups of galaxies, whether they are gravitationally bound, and what this may imply for galaxy evolution. The third part of the thesis concentrates on describing results of a case study of isolated field elliptical galaxies. The final chapter discusses another case study of luminous infra-red galaxies.

Abstract:A general overview of the understanding of our Galaxy is presented following the lines of its main structures: halo, disc, bulge/bar. This review is emphasising some "Time Domain Astronomy" contributions. On the one hand the distance and tangential motion of the stars are essential to this understanding and are obtained through multi-epoch surveys, on the other hand the chemistry of the stars, and their radial velocity are also key elements to map Galactic (sub-)structures and unravel their history and evolution. Contemporary surveys are revolutionising our view of the Milky Way and galaxies in general. Among these, the Gaia mission excels by its precision astrometry of 1.3 billion stars stretching through the Milky Way and beyond, providing the first 3D view of a major part of the Milky Way.

Abstract:Abstract Increasingly good statistical data on the galaxy population at high and low redshift enable the development of new phenomenological approaches to galaxy evolution based on application of the simplest continuity equations. This has given new insights into the different ways in which star-formation in galaxies is quenched, the role of merging in the population, and in to the control of star-formation in star-forming galaxies and the links with chemical evolution. The continuity approach provides a self-consistent view of the evolving population and exposes linkages between different aspects of galaxy evolution.

Abstract:In recent years it became clear that a population of galaxies radiating most of their power in the far-infrared contribute an important part of the whole star formation activity in the universe. These galaxies emit up to 99% of their energy output in the infrared by dust. The optical properties of dust in galaxies are thus very important to understand this population. Mayo Greenberg who has brought many of the ideas underlying our understanding of the physics of interstellar dust has been a pioneer in predicting the important role of organic solid material formed on dust grains in molecular clouds and of potential importance of transient heating of very small particles. It appeared with the ISO data on galaxies and even more today with the first Spitzer data that these mechanisms are important globally for the observations of infrared galaxies at significant redshifts. The understanding of their evolution is one of the keys to the understanding of galaxy built up and evolution.

Abstract:Cosmic structures at large scales represent the earliest and most extended form of matter condensation. In this lecture we review the application of the methods and concepts of modern statistical physics to these structures. This leads to a new perspective in the field which can be tested by the many new data which are appearing in the near future. In particular, galaxy structures show fractal correlation up to the present observational limits. The cosmic microwave background radiation, which should trace the initial conditions from which these structures have emerged through gravitational dynamics, is instead extremely smooth. Understanding the relation between the complex galaxy structures and the smooth microwave background radiation represents an extremely challenging problem in the field of structure formation.

Abstract:The limitations of current technology do not allow one to foresee the expansion of the humankind beyond our planet for at least a few decades. Furthermore, the laws of physics, as for as they are known, preclude any form of traveling beyond the speed of light, as well as any viable and stable space-time shortcuts (wormholes, warp-drives, etc) that would facilitate cosmic traveling. Given the vastness of the Universe these are insurmountable obstacles for any {\it in situ} exploration of the cosmos beyond our most immediate cosmic neighbourhood. Nevertheless, the Universe is transparent and contains countless sources of visible light. Actually, in the last decades, technological developments have made possible to observe the cosmos throughout most of the electromagnetic spectrum as well as to perform dynamical studies that allow perceiving the presence of invisible components such as black holes, dark matter and dark energy. In this respect, humankind has then been given the opportunity to unravel the inner workings of the cosmos and through this process be part of the cosmic habitat. In this contribution various forms of cosmological thinking will be discussed, from some myths of creation till some of the latest scientific discoveries.

Scaling Laws in the Distribution of Galaxies

Abstract:Research done during the previous century established our Standard Cosmological Model. There are many details still to be filled in, but few would seriously doubt the basic premise. Past surveys have revealed that the large-scale distribution of galaxies in the Universe is far from random: it is highly structured over a vast range of scales. To describe cosmic structures, we need to build mathematically quantifiable descriptions of structure. Identifying where scaling laws apply and the nature of those scaling laws is an important part of understanding which physical mechanisms have been responsible for the organization of clusters, superclusters of galaxies and the voids between them. Finding where these scaling laws are broken is equally important since this indicates the transition to different underlying physics. In describing scaling laws we are helped by making analogies with fractals: mathematical constructs that can possess a wide variety of scaling properties. We must beware, however, of saying that the Universe is a fractal on some range of scales: it merely exhibits a specific kind of fractal-like behavior on those scales. We exploit the richness of fractal scaling behavior merely as an important supplement to the usual battery of statistical descriptors. We review the history of how we have learned about the structure of the Universe and present the data and methodologies that are relevant to the question of discovering and understanding any scaling properties that structure may have. The ultimate goal is to have a complete understanding of how that structure emerged. We are getting close!

A Simple Continuity Approach to Galaxy Evolution

Abstract:We describe the outlines of a new phenomenological approach to the evolving galaxy population. This is based on identifying the underlying simplicities, or symmetries, that are exhibited by the galaxy population over a wide range of epochs, and then exploring the consequences of these analytically, via the continuity equations, to both reproduce the key features of the evolving galaxy population and to identify the empirical characteristics of the dominant physical processes. This approach is very successful, e.g. in reproducing the SDSS mass function(s) of galaxies. Merging enters into the picture in a number of ways, and our approach gives new constraints and insights into (a) the increase of stelar mass of passive galaxies after they are quenched, (b) the destruction of galaxies as they merge into others, (c) the possible role of merging as a quenching channel, and (d) the likelihood of widespread merging at very early epochs.

Abstract:Over the past century, rooted in the theory of general relativity, cosmology has developed a very successful physical model of the universe: the {\em big-bang model}. Its construction followed different stages to incorporate nuclear processes, the understanding of the matter present in the universe, a description of the early universe and of the large scale structure. This model has been confronted to a variety of observations that allow one to reconstruct its expansion history, its thermal history and the structuration of matter. Hence, what we refer to as the big-bang model today is radically different from what one may have had in mind a century ago. This construction changed our vision of the universe, both on observable scales and for the universe as a whole. It offers in particular physical models for the origins of the atomic nuclei, of matter and of the large scale structure. This text summarizes the main steps of the construction of the model, linking its main predictions to the observations that back them up. It also discusses its weaknesses, the open questions and problems, among which the need for a dark sector including dark matter and dark energy.

Abstract:(Abridged) Fundamental tensions between observations and dark-matter based cosmological models have emerged. This updated review has two purposes: to explore new tensions that have arisen in recent years, compounding the unresolved tensions from previous studies, and to use the shortcomings of the current theory to guide the development of a successful model. Tensions arise in view of the profusion of thin disk galaxies, the pronounced symmetrical structure of the Local Group of Galaxies, the common occurrence of planes of satellite systems, the El Gordo and Bullet galaxy clusters, significant matter inhomogeneities on scales much larger than 100 Mpc, and the observed rapid formation of galaxies and super-massive black holes at redshifts larger than 7. Given the nature of the tensions, the real Universe needs to be described by a model in which gravitation is effectively stronger than Einsteinian/Newtonian gravitation at accelerations below Milgrom's acceleration scale. The promising nuHDM model, anchored on Milgromian dynamics but keeping the standard expansion history with dark energy, solves many of the above tensions. However galaxy formation appears to occur too late in this model, model galaxy clusters reach too large masses, and the mass function of model galaxy clusters is too flat and thus top-heavy in comparison to the observed mass function. Classes of models that reassess inflation, dark energy and the role of the CMB should be explored.
