Abstract:We study various aspects of the topological quantum computation scheme based on the non-Abelian anyons corresponding to fractional quantum hall effect states at filling fraction 5/2 using the Temperley-Lieb recoupling theory. Unitary braiding matrices are obtained by a normalization of the degenerate ground states of a system of anyons, which is equivalent to a modification of the definition of the 3-vertices in the Temperley-Lieb recoupling theory as proposed by Kauffman and Lomonaco. With the braid matrices available, we discuss the problems of encoding of qubit states and construction of quantum gates from the elementary braiding operation matrices for the Ising anyons model. In the encoding scheme where 2 qubits are represented by 8 Ising anyons, we give an alternative proof of the no-entanglement theorem given by Bravyi and compare it to the case of Fibonacci anyons model. In the encoding scheme where 2 qubits are represented by 6 Ising anyons, we construct a set of quantum gates which is equivalent to the construction of Georgiev.
Exploiting Geometric Degrees of Freedom in Topological Quantum Computing

Abstract:In a topological quantum computer, braids of non-Abelian anyons in a (2+1)-dimensional space time form quantum gates, whose fault tolerance relies on the topological, rather than geometric, properties of the braids. Here we propose to create and exploit redundant geometric degrees of freedom to improve the theoretical accuracy of topological single-and two-qubit quantum gates. We demonstrate the power of the idea using explicit constructions in the Fibonacci model. We compare its efficiency with that of the Solovay-Kitaev algorithm and explain its connection to the leakage errors reduction in an earlier construction [H. Xu and X. Wan, Phys. Rev. A 78, 042325 (2008)].

Abstract:We discuss how to significantly reduce leakage errors in topological quantum computation by introducing an irrelevant error in phase, using the construction of a CNOT gate in the Fibonacci anyon model as a concrete example. To be specific, we construct a functional braid in a six-anyon Hilbert space that exchanges two neighboring anyons while conserving the encoded quantum information. The leakage error is $\sim$$10^{-10}$ for a braid of $\sim$100 interchanges of anyons. Applying the braid greatly reduces the leakage error in the construction of generic controlled-rotation gates.

Abstract:The fusion basis of Fibonacci anyons supports unitary braid representations that can be utilized for universal quantum computation. We show a mapping between the fusion basis of three Fibonacci anyons, $\{|1\rangle, |\tau\rangle\}$, and the two length 4 Dyck paths via an isomorphism between the two dimensional braid group representations on the fusion basis and the braid group representation built on the standard $(2,2)$ Young diagrams using the Jones construction. This correspondence helps us construct the fusion basis of the Fibonacci anyons using Dyck paths as the number of standard $(N,N)$ Young tableaux is the Catalan number, $C_N$ . We then use the local Fredkin moves to construct a spin chain that contains precisely those Dyck paths that correspond to the Fibonacci fusion basis, as a degenerate set. We show that the system is gapped and examine its stability to random noise thereby establishing its usefulness as a platform for topological quantum computation. Finally, we show braidwords in this rotated space that efficiently enable the execution of any desired single-qubit operation, achieving the desired level of precision($\sim 10^{-3}$).

Abstract:We present a systematic numerical method to compute the elementary braiding operations for topological quantum computation (TQC). Braiding non-Abelian anyons is a crucial technique in TQC, offering a topologically protected implementation of quantum gates. However, obtaining matrix representations for braid generators can be challenging, especially for systems with numerous anyons or complex fusion patterns. Our proposed method addresses this challenge, allowing for the inclusion of an arbitrary number of anyons per qubit or qudit. This approach serves as a fundamental component in a general topological quantum circuit simulator, facilitating the exploration and analysis of intricate quantum circuits within the TQC framework. We have implemented and tested the method using algebraic conditions. Furthermore, we provide a proof of concept by successfully reproducing the CNOT gate.

Abstract:We study an efficient algorithm to hash any single-qubit gate into a braid of Fibonacci anyons represented by a product of icosahedral group elements. By representing the group elements by braid segments of different lengths, we introduce a series of pseudogroups. Joining these braid segments in a renormalization group fashion, we obtain a Gaussian unitary ensemble of random-matrix representations of braids. With braids of length O(log2(1/epsilon)), we can approximate all SU(2) matrices to an average error epsilon with a cost of O(log(1/epsilon)) in time. The algorithm is applicable to generic quantum compiling.
Universal quantum computation using Ising anyons from a non-semisimple Topological Quantum Field Theory

Abstract:We propose a framework for topological quantum computation using newly discovered non-semisimple analogs of topological quantum field theories in 2+1 dimensions. These enhanced theories offer more powerful models for quantum computation. The conventional theory of Ising anyons, which is believed to describe excitations in the $\nu = 5/2$ fractional quantum Hall state, is not universal for quantum computation via braiding of quasiparticles. However, we show that the non-semisimple theory introduces new anyon types that extend the Ising framework. By adding just one new anyon type, universal quantum computation can be achieved through braiding alone. This result opens new avenues for realizing fault-tolerant quantum computing in topologically ordered systems.

Abstract:Topological quantum computation has emerged as one of the most exciting approaches to constructing a fault-tolerant quantum computer. The proposal relies on the existence of topological states of matter whose quasiparticle excitations are neither bosons nor fermions, but are particles known as non-Abelian anyons, meaning that they obey non-Abelian braiding statistics. Quantum information is stored in states with multiple quasiparticles, which have a topological degeneracy. The unitary gate operations that are necessary for quantum computation are carried out by braiding quasiparticles and then measuring the multiquasiparticle states. The fault tolerance of a topological quantum computer arises from the nonlocal encoding of the quasiparticle states, which makes them immune to errors caused by local perturbations. To date, the only such topological states thought to have been found in nature are fractional quantum Hall states, most prominently the ν=5∕2 state, although several other prospective candidates have been proposed in systems as disparate as ultracold atoms in optical lattices and thin-film superconductors. In this review article, current research in this field is described, focusing on the general theoretical concepts of non-Abelian statistics as it relates to topological quantum computation, on understanding non-Abelian quantum Hall states, on proposed experiments to detect non-Abelian anyons, and on proposed architectures for a topological quantum computer. Both the mathematical underpinnings of topological quantum computation and the physics of the subject are addressed, using the ν=5∕2 fractional quantum Hall state as the archetype of a non-Abelian topological state enabling fault-tolerant quantum computation.

Abstract:We construct a braided analogue of the quantum permutation group and show that it is the universal braided compact quantum group acting on a finite space in the category of $\mathbb{Z}/N\mathbb{Z}$-$\textrm{C}^*$-algebras with a twisted monoidal structure. As an application, we prove the existence of braided quantum symmetries of finite, simple, undirected, circulant graphs, explicitly compute it for several examples, and obtain a generalization of a result of Banica in this direction. Finally, in an appendix, we briefly describe the irreducible representations of this braided analogue of the quantum permutation group and their fusion rules.

Abstract:Topological quantum computation may provide a robust approach for encoding and manipulating information utilizing the topological properties of anyonic quasiparticle excitations. We develop an efficient means to map between dense and sparse representations of quantum information (qubits) and a simple construction of multiqubit gates, for all anyon models from Chern-Simons-Witten SU(2)(k) theory that support universal quantum computation by braiding (k >= 3, k not equal 4). In the process, we show how the constructions of topological quantum memory and gates for k = 2,4 connect naturally to those for k >= 3, k not equal 4, unifying these concepts in a simple framework. Furthermore, we illustrate potential extensions of these ideas to other anyon models outside of Chern-Simons-Witten field theory.
Programmable lattices for non-Abelian topological photonics and braiding

Abstract:Non-Abelian physics, originating from noncommutative sequences of operations, unveils novel topological degrees of freedom for advancing band theory and quantum computation. In photonics, significant efforts have been devoted to developing reconfigurable non-Abelian platforms, serving both as classical testbeds for non-Abelian quantum phenomena and as programmable systems that harness topological complexities. Here we establish topological spinor lattices for non-Abelian programmable photonics. We design a building block for reconfigurable unitary coupling between pseudospin resonances, achieving a universal set of rotation gates through coupling along the unit cell boundary. The lattice assembly of our building blocks enables the emulation of the extended quantum Hall family across various eigenspinor bases. Particularly, we reveal the emergence of a non-Abelian interface even when the bulks are Abelian, which allows the topologically trivial engineering of topologically protected edge states. We also define the braid group for pseudospin observables, demonstrating non-Abelian braiding operations and the Yang-Baxter relations. Our results pave the way for realizing a reconfigurable testbed for a wide class of Abelian and non-Abelian topological phenomena and braiding operations.

Asymptotically Optimal Topological Quantum Compiling

Abstract:In a topological quantum computer, universality is achieved by braiding and quantum information is natively protected from small local errors. We address the problem of compiling single-qubit quantum operations into braid representations for non-abelian quasiparticles described by the Fibonacci anyon model. We develop a probabilistically polynomial algorithm that outputs a braid pattern to approximate a given single-qubit unitary to a desired precision. We also classify the single-qubit unitaries that can be implemented exactly by a Fibonacci anyon braid pattern and present an efficient algorithm to produce their braid patterns. Our techniques produce braid patterns that meet the uniform asymptotic lower bound on the compiled circuit depth and thus are depth-optimal asymptotically. Our compiled circuits are significantly shorter than those output by prior state-of-the-art methods, resulting in improvements in depth by factors ranging from 20 to 1000 for precisions ranging between $10^{-10}$ and $10^{-30}$.

Abstract:Anyons are quasiparticles occurring in two dimensions, whose topological properties are believed to be robust against local perturbations and may hold promise for fault tolerant quantum computing. Here we present an experiment of demonstrating the path independent nature of anyonic braiding statistics with a superconducting quantum circuit, which represents a 7-qubit version of the toric code model. We dynamically create the ground state of the model, achieving a state fidelity of 0.688 +/- 0.015 as verified by quantum state tomography. Anyonic excitations and braiding operations are subsequently implemented with single-qubit rotations. The braiding robustness is witnessed by looping an anyonic excitation around another one along two distinct, but topologically equivalent paths: Both reveal the nontrivial p-phase shift, the hallmark of Abelian 1/2 anyons, with a phase accuracy of similar to 99% in the Ramsey-type interference measurement.

Abstract:The synthesis of a quantum computer remains an ongoing challenge in modern physics. Whereas decoherence stymies most approaches, topological quantum computation schemes evade decoherence at the hardware level by storing quantum information non-locally. Here we establish that a key operation—braiding of non-Abelian anyons—can be implemented using one-dimensional semiconducting wires. Such wires can be driven into a topological phase supporting long-sought particles known as Majorana fermions that can encode topological qubits. We show that in wire networks, Majorana fermions can be meaningfully braided by simply adjusting gate voltages, and that they exhibit non-Abelian statistics like vortices in a p+ip superconductor. We propose experimental set-ups that enable probing of the Majorana fusion rules and the efficient exchange of arbitrary numbers of Majorana fermions. This work should open a new direction in topological quantum computation that benefits from physical transparency and experimental feasibility.

Topological Quantum Teleportation and Superdense Coding -- Without Braiding

Abstract:We present the teleportation and superdense coding protocols for a family of anyon theories coming from Tambara-Yamagami categories, of which the lowest rank theories describe Ising anyons. In contrast to the usual approach to anyonic computation, we relax the requirement that we should be able to braid anyons. This is motivated by the goal of designing basic protocols that require less control over quasiparticles, and which may therefore be amenable to realisation in near-term systems. Since these implementations are braid-free, they are also compatible with Majorana modes on a 1d quantum wire.

Abstract:Onsite gain-loss-induced topological braiding principle of non-Hermitian energy bands is theoretically formulated in multiband lattice models with Hermitian hopping amplitudes. Braid phase transition occurs when the gain-loss parameter is tuned across exceptional point degeneracy. Laboratory realizable effective-Hamiltonians are proposed to realize braid groups $\mathbb{B}_2$ and $\mathbb{B}_3$ of two and three bands, respectively. While $\mathbb{B}_2$ is trivially Abelian, the group $\mathbb{B}_3$ features non-Abelian braiding and energy permutation originating from the collective behavior of multiple exceptional points. Phase diagrams with respect to lattice parameters to realize braid group generators and their non-commutativity are shown. The proposed theory is conducive to synthesizing exceptional materials for applications in topological computation and information processing.

Abstract:We describe measurement-only topological quantum computation using both projective and interferometrical measurement of topological charge. We demonstrate how anyonic teleportation can be achieved using “forced measurement” protocols for both types of measurement. Using this, it is shown how topological charge measurements can be used to generate the braiding transformations used in topological quantum computation, and hence that the physical transportation of computational anyons is unnecessary. We give a detailed discussion of the anyonics for implementation of topological quantum computation (particularly, using the measurement-only approach) in fractional quantum Hall systems.

Versatile Braiding of Non-Hermitian Topological Edge States

Abstract:Among the most intriguing features of non-Hermitian (NH) systems is the ability of complex energies to form braids under parametric variation. Several braiding behaviors, including link and knot formation, have been observed in experiments on synthetic NH systems, such as looped optical fibers. The exact conditions for these phenomena remain unsettled, but existing demonstrations have involved long-range nonreciprocal hoppings, which are hard to implement on many experimental platforms. Here, we present a route to realizing complex energy braids using 1D NH Aubry-André-Harper lattices. Under purely local gain and loss modulation, the eigenstates exhibit a variety of braiding behaviors, including unknots, Hopf links, trefoil knots, Solomon links and catenanes. We show how these are created by the interplay between non-Hermiticity and the lattice's bulk states and topological edge states. The transitions between different braids are marked by changes in the global Berry phase of the NH lattice.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss algebraic, combinatorial and topological properties of singular virtual braids. On the algebraic side, we state the relations between classical and singular virtual objects, in addition we discuss a Birman-like conjecture for the virtual case. On the topological and combinatorial side, we prove that there is a bijection between singular abstract braids, singular horizontal Gauss diagrams up to a certain equivalence relation, and singular virtual braids, in particular using singular horizontal Gauss diagrams we obtain a presentation of the singular pure virtual braid monoid.

Abstract:We study the problem of universality in the anyon model described by the $SU(2)$ Witten-Chern-Simons theory at level $k$. A classic theorem of Freedman-Larsen-Wang states that for $k \geq 3, \ k \neq 4$, braiding of the anyons of topological charge $1/2$ is universal for topological quantum computing. For the case of one qubit, we prove a stronger result that double-braiding of such anyons alone is already universal.
