Abstract:We present a reconstruction algorithm for recovering both "magnetic-hard" and "magnetic-soft" obstacles in a background domain with known isotropic medium from the boundary impedance map. We use in our algorithm complex geometric optics solutions constructed for Maxwell's equation.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the time-harmonic electromagnetic (EM) scattering problem in a general medium which may possess a nontrivial topological structure. We model this by an inhomogeneous and possibly anisotropic medium with embedded obstacles and the EM waves cannot penetrate inside the obstacles. Such a situation naturally arises in studying inverse EM scattering problems from complex mediums with partial boundary measurements, or inverse problems from EM mediums with metal inclusions. We develop a novel theoretical framework by showing that the embedded obstacles can be effectively approximated by a certain isotropic medium with a specific choice of material parameters. We derive sharp estimates to verify this effective approximation and also discuss the practical implications of our results to the inverse problems mentioned above, which are longstanding topics in inverse scattering theory.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the inverse problem of scattering of time-harmonic acoustic plane waves from a complex obstacle in the sense that a so-called generalized impedance boundary condition (GIBC) is satisfied on the boundary of the obstacle. The factorization method is established to reconstruct the complex obstacle from the far-field data at a fixed frequency. Numerical examples are also provided to illustrate the practicability of the inversion algorithm.

Abstract:Herein, we study an inverse problem for detecting unknown obstacles by the enclosure method using the Dirichlet--to--Neumann map for measurements. We justify the method for an penetrable obstacle case involving a biharmonic equation. We use complex geometrical optics solutions with a logarithmic phase to reconstruct some non--convex parts of the obstacle.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with analysis of electromagnetic wave scattering by an obstacle which is embedded in a two-layered lossy medium separated by an unbounded rough surface. Given a dipole point source, the direct problem is to determine the electromagnetic wave field for the given obstacle and unbounded rough surface; the inverse problem is to reconstruct simultaneously the obstacle and unbounded rough surface from the electromagnetic field measured on a plane surface above the obstacle. For the direct problem, a new boundary integral equation is proposed and its well-posedness is established. The analysis is based on the exponential decay of the dyadic Green function for Maxwell's equations in a lossy medium. For the inverse problem, the global uniqueness is proved and a local stability is discussed. A crucial step in the proof of the stability is to obtain the existence and characterization of the domain derivative of the electric field with respect to the shape of the obstacle and unbounded rough surface.

Abstract:In this paper, the reconstruction of perfectly electric conductor (PEC) scatterers with transverse electric (TE) wave illumination is investigated using the continuous-type subspace-based optimization method (SOM). The PEC scatterers can be of arbitrary locations, shapes and quantities and no prior information about the scatterers is required in the reconstructions. Compared with the transverse magnetic (TM) counterpart, the TE case is not only mathematically more complex, but also numerically more demanding in the sense that the triangular basis is used to represent induced electric current. Moreover, under better mesh strategy and more strict objective function, numerical simulations for arbitrary PEC scatterers generate satisfactory results and are well robust against noise. The algorithm is also examined under the experimental scattering data and still obtains good reconstruction results.

Abstract:In inverse scattering problems, a model that allows for the simultaneous recovery of both the domain shape and an impedance boundary condition covers a wide range of problems with impenetrable domains, including recovering the shape of sound-hard and sound-soft obstacles and obstacles with thin coatings. This work develops an optimization framework for recovering the shape and material parameters of a penetrable, dissipative obstacle in the multifrequency setting, using a constrained class of curvature-dependent impedance function models proposed by Antoine, Barucq, and Vernhet in "High-frequency asymptotic analysis of a dissipative transmission problem resulting in generalized impedance boundary conditions." Asymptotic Analysis, 26(3-4):257–283, (2001). We find that in certain regimes this constrained model improves the robustness of the recovery problem, compared to more general models, and provides meaningfully better obstacle recovery than simpler models. We explore the effectiveness of the model for varying levels of dissipation, for noise-corrupted data, and for limited aperture data in the numerical examples.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the reconstruction of electromagnetic inclusions in a three-dimensional bounded domain by boundary measurements. An accurate and stable reconstruction method is presented to solve the associated inverse problem. The approach consists of two main steps: (1) At low frequency, a multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm is used to obtain the locations of inclusions, which serve as an initial guess for reconstructions at higher frequencies. (2) A continuation method based on multiple frequency data is then applied to recover the shapes of inclusions accurately. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the approach.

Abstract:An effective source reconstruction method (SRM) to predict the noise coupling from an unknown electromagnetic interference (EMI) source inside a shielding enclosure is proposed in this work. On account of the difficulty and time-consuming in phase measurement of near-field, the magnitude-only near-field scanning is employed to obtain the near-field above EMI sources in free space, and the leakage near-field from the slots and/or holes of a shielding enclosure after the EMI source is inserted into the enclosure. The infinitesimal dipole is used as the equivalent source of the EMI source. The proposed method can generally be divided into three steps. First, the positions and initial moments of the equivalent dipoles of an unknown EMI source without any shielding enclosure are derived by using dynamic differential evolution (DDE) algorithm. Second, the obtained dipoles are thereafter placed into an arbitrarily shaped shielding enclosure, and the full-wave simulation is implemented to build the relationship between the dipoles and the measured leakage field from the slots/holes of the shielding enclosure. Third, the dipole moments are thereby optimized by using the DDE method again based on the magnitude-only leakage field. It is worth highlighting that only a relatively small region of near-field on the leakage plane is sufficient for obtaining an effective equivalent dipole model in the shielding enclosure. The results of numerical simulation and physical measurement have verified the effectiveness of the proposed SRM for modeling unknown EMI sources in a shielding enclosure.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider an inverse scattering problem for an obstacle D subset of R-3 with Robin boundary condition. A reconstruction procedure for identifying both the shape of the obstacle and the boundary impedance from the far-field pattern is proposed. Our method is to transform the far-field patterns into the near-field patterns, then construct an indicator function from which we can determine the boundary shape. Having known the shape of D, the boundary impedance is recovered by moment method for the known boundary.

Abstract:In this paper, a field reconstruction method based on plane wave spectrum is proposed. The electromagnetic field distribution below the shielding plane is derived by the electromagnetic field above the shielding plane. This method is validated by a simulation example. According to simulation result, the reconstructed field of proposed method is of high accuracy. This method is of great significance in electromagnetic interference diagnosis.

Abstract:Consider the inverse scattering problem of time-harmonic acoustic waves by a 3D bounded elastic obstacle which may contain embedded impenetrable obstacles inside. We propose a novel and simple technique to show that the elastic obstacle can be uniquely recovered by the acoustic far-field pattern at a fixed frequency, disregarding its contents. Our method is based on constructing a well-posed modified interior transmission problem on a small domain and makes use of an a priori estimate for both the acoustic and elastic wave fields in the usual H-1-norm. In the case when there is no obstacle embedded inside the elastic body, our method gives a much simpler proof for the uniqueness result obtained previously in the literature (Natroshvili et al 2000 Rend. Mat. Serie VII 20 57-92; Monk and Selgas 2009 Inverse Problems Imaging 3 173-98).

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the inverse problem of scattering of time-harmonic acoustic waves by an inhomogeneous penetrable obstacle with buried objects inside. We prove under certain conditions that the factorization method can be applied to reconstruct the penetrable obstacle from far-field data without knowing the buried objects inside. Numerical examples are also provided illustrating the inversion algorithm.

Abstract:A combined field integral equation (CFIE) with single operator, which is named equalized CFIE (ECFIE) is presented for solving the electromagnetic scatterings from conducting targets with cavities on which surface both the electrical and magnetic currents exist simultaneously. In ECFIE, the different integral operators imposed on unknown electric and magnetic currents are simplified to a single one by properly choosing the coefficients in conventional CFIE. As a result, the computation complexity is dramatically reduced comparing with EFIE, MFIE, and conventional CFIE. Combined with multilevel fast multipole algorithm (MLFMA) and connection scheme (CS), ECFIE is used to simulate the scattering from conducting objects with cavities. The numerical examples presented in this paper demonstrate the validity and high efficiency of this approach.

Abstract:This paper considers the inverse problem of scattering of time-harmonic acoustic and electromagnetic plane waves by a bounded, inhomogeneous, penetrable obstacle with embedded objects inside. A new method is proposed to prove that the inhomogeneous penetrable obstacle can be uniquely determined from the far-field pattern at a fixed frequency, disregarding its contents. Our method is based on constructing a well-posed interior transmission problem in a small domain associated with the Helmholtz or modified Helmholtz equation and the Maxwell or modified Maxwell equations. A key role is played by the smallness of the domain which ensures that the lowest transmission eigenvalue is large so that a given wave number k is not an eigenvalue of the interior transmission problem. Another ingredient in our proofs is a priori estimates of solutions to the transmission scattering problems with data in Lp (1<p<2), which are established in this paper by using the integral equation method. A main feature of the new method is that it can deal with the acoustic and electromagnetic cases in a unified way and can be easily applied to deal with inverse scattering by unbounded rough interfaces.
Determining conductivity and embedded obstacles from partial boundary measurements

Abstract: In this paper, we consider an inverse conductivity problem on a bounded domain $\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\geq2$, also known as Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT), for the case where unknown impenetrable obstacles are embedded into $\Omega$. We show that a piecewise-constant conductivity function and embedded obstacles can be simultaneously recovered in terms of the local Dirichlet-to-Neumann map defined on an arbitrary small open subset of the boundary of the domain $\Omega$. The method depends on the well-posedness of a coupled PDE-system constructed for the conductivity equations in the $H^1$-space and some elementary a priori estimates for Harmonic functions.
Stable Reconstruction of Anisotropic Objects from Near-Field Electromagnetic Data

Abstract:This paper addresses the electromagnetic inverse scattering problem of determining the location and shape of anisotropic objects from near-field data. We investigate both cases involving the Helmholtz equation and Maxwell's equations for this inverse problem. Our study focuses on developing efficient imaging functionals that enable a fast and stable recovery of the anisotropic object. The implementation of the imaging functionals is simple and avoids the need to solve an ill-posed problem. The resolution analysis of the imaging functionals is conducted using the Green representation formula. Furthermore, we establish stability estimates for these imaging functionals when noise is present in the data. To illustrate the effectiveness of the methods, we present numerical examples showcasing their performance.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the scattering problem of time-harmonic electromagnetic waves from an infinite cylinder having an open arc Gamma and a bounded domain D in R-2 as cross section. We focus on the inverse scattering problem, that is, to reconstruct the shape of Gamma and D from the far-field pattern by using the factorization method. Through establishing a mixed reciprocity relation, we prove that the scatters Gamma and D can be uniquely determined by the far-field pattern. Furthermore, the mathematical basis is given to explain that the factorization method is feasible to our problem. At the end of this paper, we give some numerical examples to show the efficaciousness of the algorithms.

Abstract:Reconstruction of obstacles embedded in a periodic waveguide with arbitrary geometry is considered in this paper. The measurement is on a line segment of the scattered field due to point sources inside the waveguide. A linear sampling type method is proposed to characterize the obstacles using the solutions of the near field ill-posed linear integral equations. Due to the fact that we consider waveguides with arbitrary geometry, to compute the background Green's function, we employ a method based on the limiting absorption principle and the recursive doubling technique. Furthermore, an algorithm is proposed to speed up the sampling procedure. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the performance of the proposed method.
